A hardly thrilling or conclusive end to the Runesword series

"The Stone of Time" is the sixth and thankfully final book in the Young Adult fantasy series, Runesword. The story is continued by two previous authors, Rose Estes (known for her early D&D Endless Quest and Greyhawk novels) and Tom Wham (board game designer). Different authors for each book seem to have been the theme for this series in efforts to quickly crank out more stories. While the authors may be different, the characters pretty much remain the same. Cal the warrior, Bith the sorceress, Hathor the troll and Endril the elf are all back together again on their sixth adventure. The Norse God Vili (Brother of Odin) once again tasks them in finding and destroying another Runesword in attempts to reclaim more of his divine power. In a last ditch attempt to halt the Dark Lord's advancing army and wall of mist, the adventurers must find and journey to the fabled city of Abaton where the legendary Stone of Time is kept. By obtaining and learning to use the stone Bith hopes that she can alter the past so that the Dark Lord's forces never exist. Here are my thoughts on The Stone of Time;

Pros

+ Quick and easy read.

+ Cover by Larry Elmore.

Cons

- Story jumps around too much and never really focuses enough on one thing. A common occurrence in this series.

- Cover art never actually occurs in the story. The characters do meet such creatures but are never actually attacked by or fight them.

- Hathor's mother is named Gething in one chapter then Gethring in the next. Where was the editor?

- The "Dark Lord" is remained almost completely faceless and not really a character, just a name.

- Bith and Cal's squabbling is still persistent and annoying. Quite possibly two of the most annoying characters I've ever read about in a fantasy series.

- Extremely abrupt and cliché ending. I never saw an army defeated so quickly and easily. Everything was way too convenient.

- At the end of the book it's revealed the Runesword was a fake and the group was tricked by Loki. Then Gunnar Greybeard shows up on behalf of Vili and requests the group to search for another Runesword. What? How exactly is this a conclusion? To me it seems the series was just cancelled after the sixth book was finished.

- No world map.

The cover of the book boasts "The Thrilling Conclusion to the Epic Adventure Series." Now if you've read the entire series you can't help but laugh at such a statement. The Stone of Time was pretty much on par with the previous books in the series. The story is loosely connected and the authors do make mention of the Outcasts previous adventures. My main issue with this series is believing the group of four characters stays together. Sure they're united at the beginning of each book by the god Vili to recover another Runesword, but beyond that it's sometimes difficult to see them adventuring together. Regardless, the books are short, easy reads so I continued the series to see what the other authors could contribute.

A Greater Madness.

Magic had at last returned to Caithe - though hardly in the form that the princess Athaya Trelane had imagined. The Sage, the wizard leader of the ice-bound island of Sare, was poised on Caithe's shores. No longer would wizards be persecuted by Church and State. No longer would the Tribunal dare root out and exterminate them. And those Caithans who were struck with the madness of untrained magic would no longer need to flock to Athaya's secret schools to learn control. The promises he made to Caithe's wizards were grand.... But there was a darker side to the Sage's plan. The Sage was determined to claim the kingdom for his own. His wizards would rule all lesser, common men. The Trelane king would be ousted from power. And as for Athaya herself... She was an adept, like the Sage; and an ancient prophecy spoke of a powerful woman who would aid a great wizard king.... His was a madness of a different sort - and to stop his schemes would be the greatest challenge of Athaya's life.

I loved all the books

Julie, if you're out there, you should pick up writing again with how easy it is to self publish. I loved the entire series, and I feel it did not get the recognition it deserved. Athaya is one of my teenage heros. Love her to death and the honest to goodness personality you gave her. I always wanted to see more of the world you created. I hope some how you return to writing. You were truly magnificent

Title: Dawn

Subtitle: The Birth of Evil

Author: William McKiddy

Narrator: Gary L. Willprecht

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 57 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-19-13

Publisher: William J. McKiddy, Jr.

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic

Publisher's Summary:

This audiobook is a fantasy in the form of a creation myth. It explores a plausible origin for evil from a story rather than a philosophical perspective. Haylel and his cohorts fear that the creator of the universe is mentally unstable. How were they to cope with an irrational all powerful creator, that they fear may destroy them altogether in favor of his newest creation?

Members Reviews:

Story puts you into the Creation

For anyone reading the story of Creation from Genesis, we learn how God created everything around us. There was an order to the Creation and the creatures. However, some of the created were not satisfied with their role in the Creation. They wanted more. The story provides a fictional dialog of that dissatisfaction among some of the created members. Their plot to change their role and importance in the kingdom.

I enjoyed the book because it was not a replacement for the Genesis account, but rather acted like a supplement to the story. It allowed me to broaden my visualization of God's act of creating our universe.

Sound biblical writing and very imaginative

Mr. McKiddy has added understanding of the biblical principles of the creation, Adam and Eve's fall and the beginning of God's plan for salvation for all mankind, made necessary by their fall. Some of the writing about the created beings in Heaven (Day and Night in the book) added to understanding and some of it could get a bit tedious and did not add to the story. I was expecting an ending which would deal with Satan and his angels being cast out of Heaven, so that was disappointing. This is a book which causes thoughtfulness by the reader. It is a very creative writing on a subject has caused much discussion.

scary

Members Reviews:

Great Fantasy!

I've read this book twice. It's beautifully-written epic fantasy.

Thomas, the young King of Havilah, discovers seven figs, fruit from the long forgotten Eden, in a forest beyond his lands. Meanwhile, in the land of Cush, Princess Lilya hopes to escape her father's cruel rule that causes her both mental and physical suffering. One day she meets King Thomas who invites her to come to his lands. But after she agrees, Lilya notices that the figs Thomas eats change him within, and not in a good way. Soon Lilya realizes her life is in danger as the evil consumes Thomas' soul, and turns him into a real monster.

The book is full of action scenes, and some of them may not be for the faint-hearted. I recommend Eden Legacy to all epic fantasy readers. Excellent read!

Outstanding read

Mr. Toney moves a bit slowly, however, the description he provides a necessary backdrop and brings the story to life. Excellent biblical references that are not overwhelming to non-believers. Intriguing characters whose internal struggles and successes are beleivable.

EDEN Legacy

A wonderful story, well written. It pulled me in from the first page, and would not let me go until I finished it! Leaves me wishing to have an Alexander of my own.

L. Mac Neney

Enjoyable from start to end

I was looking for more uplifting fantasy reads and found this in my freebie list. Mr Toney has written one fantastic Christian fantasy book! The pain of falling far from where/ who you were and the subtle ways you get there was totally relatable.

Wonderful fantasy story, albeit a bit bloody. Enjoyed it!

Wonderful fantasy. I recommend it to those who enjoy fantasy. I especially liked the Dragon and the surprise ending! Enjoy!
