    Title: Heaven's Net Is Wide
    Subtitle: Tales of the Otori
    Author: Lian Hearn
    Narrator: Jamie Glover
    Format: Abridged
Length: 4 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-04-07
    Publisher: Pan Macmillan Publishers Ltd.
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
    Publisher's Summary:
These were the years when the warlord Iida Sadayoshi and his son, Sadamu, engaged in unifying the East of the Three Countries, compelled all to submit to the triple oak of the Tohan clan, and looked westwards to expand.
The prosperous Middle Country, coveted by its neighbours, was ruled by the weak Lord Shigemori, head of the Otori clan, who had two sons, Shigeru and Takeshi, and two discontented and ambitious half-brothers, Shoichi and Masahiro, looking for any opportunity to seize power themselves. Where there is weakness powerful men will impose...and retribution will soon follow.
Meanwhile, on a remote mountainside, Kikuta Isamu discovers that the Tribe, a clan of supernatural assassins who sell their skills to the highest bidder, will let none escape that betray the family, even if they are of the family. But they are unaware of Isamu's son, born to his wife and a member of the Hidden, who follows the teaching that it is forbidden to take life and is gifted with his father's magical talents. Every deed provokes, every mistake must sooner or later be paid for. Indeed, "Heaven's net is wide but its mesh is fine".
Thus does fate align itself to bring about the momentous clash of the Tohan and Otori at Yaegahara in a stunning tale of betrayal, revenge, warfare, and love played out in the mythical world of the Otori, which transcends genres, genders, and generations.

I started reading this thinking it was the first in the series, not realizing it was a prequel. Its still good. Like a Japanese tale but its written by a Westerner. Its pretty accurate to true Japanese myth. Jizo really is the guardian god of miscarried and stillborn babies. One thing bugged me. It mentioned the "long nosed goblins that live in the mountains" that were swordmasters. These "goblins" are properly called tengu, not goblins.
    Very hard to put down.
In my opinion this book should have been first, but with this being said I believe that the author gave you characters whom you felt something for does what they call the "Origin Story" to find out why the father of the main character and his in all ways his wife too. Plus we now know why they turned him into a god after his death and why everyone else felt that it was their duty to place their loyalty to him and his wife. But with everything I could never understand why the main characters became so scared at the very end of the story. Yet I could not put it down, and reading the origin of the characters makes me want to reread the pryor books. Plus it is so well put together. It's very hard to put down. Especially if you enjoy Samurai stories. Yet the words Samurai, Ninjas, Dyamo or Katanas are mentioned in these stories. But you can pretty much determine whose who.
Beautifully brings the series full circle
The Tales of the Otori were recommended to me by a friend, but I'm wary of enthusiastic recommendations and at first only bought the first two books, Across the Nightingale Floor and Grass for his Pillow. Half-way into the first book, I was totally hooked and immediately ordered the last three of the series so as not to have to wait once I was done with the second.
This work was supposed to be a trilogy, became a tetralogy, then a pentalogy.

Your first step down a very long and winding road.
The Eye of the World kicks off Robert Jordan's epic fantasy series and it is a step that should not be taken lightly. This first book is excellent and will likely have you listening to the next book in the journey before you know it. This is a long series (13+ books) and each book so far is between 23-41 hours of listening in unabridged format.
Some things you should know before you start:
    1) Robert Jordan did not live long enough to finish the story, but he did pass along his vision for the conclusion to Brandon Sanderson who is writing the final books. Brandon Sanderson is an awesome Fantasy writer so the conclusion of the series is in good hands.
    2) Robert Jordan can tend to be wordy at times and some of the books along the way feel a little bloated, but each one does advance the story.
    3) The narration is done by 2 excellent narrators: Michael Kramer and Kate Reading. Each chapter will be read by one or the other depending on the chapter's main character. If the main character is female then Kate will read the entire chapter including the male voices. Michael will handle the chapter's where the main character is male and he will do the female voices. This means that you must get accustomed to 2 voices for each character. This put me off at first but I quickly became accustomed to it and now I really enjoy the format.
    4) After a few books the narrators change the way they pronounce certain character names and this can throw you off until you realize that it is just a pronunciation change and not a different character. Just be prepared for it.
I am glad I started this long journey and I feel that audio is one of the best ways to experience Jordan's work. I had read The Eye of the World years ago but it didn't inspire me to keep going forward in the series, where the audiobook left me wanting more!
    This Series Rocks
I am writing this review on the first of this series because as you consider beginning a multibook series you'll be wondering if the commitment is worth it. After having listened to all of the books now available on Audible (10 or 11 and the story is still not over) I am telling you to GO FOR IT. It took a several chapters to get my bearings with the material, but after that I was hooked in a terribly engrossing world of fantasy that I would never have thought would interest me. Some other reviewers have panned the narrators, and maybe with the first book they hadn't yet found their bearing either, but throughout the series they are outstanding in my opinion. I couldn't get enough of this story. I'm thankful that I came to it late, when there were already more than 10 books to enjoy.

    Wow.
I had a very hard time turning this one off... I'd find extra house-work to do or look for traffic jams on the way to work just so I could keep listening.
The narrator, Roy Dotrice, is fantastic.
The characters in this book are amazing... We see the bad parts of the good guys, and the good parts of the bad. We get an understanding of what motivates both, and it's not always what we think. And, just as in the first two, G.R.R.M. has no problems setting people up with opportunities to win or escape or get out of whatever mess they're in...sometimes they get out, sometimes they die - no matter how important a character they've been...
This is not a kids book. This is not the usual "you are special and need to save the world" drivel with hollywood happy endings we usually feed on... This one is more...real.
The story keeps moving, plenty of action, laugh-out-loud funny parts, hardship, and surprises.
Anyone who says G.R.R.M. was only trying to make the book long, probaby wasn't paying attention.
    Wow... Another EPIC novel
As I sat and listened to the book I found myself once again at the edge of my seat almost. The book seemed to be moving too slowly and yet too fast as I read it. Too slow in that you get impatient wondering what is going to happen next yet everything seemed so relevant and then too fast in terms of when you do reach the end you are left pining for more.
George R. R. Martin did a superlative job with every character in the book. This particular book has one of the most startling twists yet, one of those twists that make you think "What the?!?!" I remember listening what happened and for a VERY VERY long time wondering "Did that really happen?". He spares no one in these books I find and I have now come to expect the unexpected.
Roy Dotrice.... What can I say? There is little I can say about his performance except this... just plain exceptional.
Chapter and part breaks are incorrect
The story and narration are excellent, but is it too much to ask for the audio book to be constructed properly? The chapter breaks do not align with the actual chapters and the parts will end in the middle of a paragraph. Very sloppy and unprofessional. For a $50 audiobook I would expect more.
    Thrilling fantastic literary works.
Now I know there have been so many reviews that I hesitate to add one. I just wish to say I enjoyed these books tremendously. This one is the third of the series "A Song of Ice and Fire", whose title takes more and more ominous tones as the story unfolds.

    Critic Reviews:
"A truly epic fantasy....The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax....[Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly)
"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal)
"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile)
"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

    I'm hooked, but narration...
Would you listen to A Clash of Kings again? Why?
No. I seldom listen to books more than once.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Tyrion Lannister. Obvious underdog, bullied his whole life. He's coming up in the world and doing big things. Will he stay humble? It seems like a question Tyrion would ask himeself.
That's why I like the character so much.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Roy Dotrice?
Roy does 2 or 3 voices voices very well.
But! his females all sound like toothless old crones in pirate movies. Even the young beautiful ones.
The remainder of male characters sound like grumpy Leprechauns. I'm not joking. They really do. It's getting quite old and it's very disappointing.
That said Roy has the perfect amount of drama. His voice is excellent for reading the back story. You find yourself lost in the story till it comes time to narrate a female part. Then he snaps you out of it like being awakened from a sleep by a power saw in your bedroom.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    37 hours N/A.
    Any additional comments?
Just finishing up book 2. Already bought book 3.
I'm excited about the series and will be more than ready to move on after book 3.
Regardless of how it leaves me hanging.
Problematic, but good on the whole.
What did you like best about A Clash of Kings? What did you like least?
Martin's series is grand and ambitious in its scope, and that is simultaneously its blessing and its curse. The writing is strong, but the pace of the story is at once somehow quick, drawing the ear to the next page, and painfully slow. His use of different perspectives to tell the story is refreshing, but there are certain characters that it seems should be added to that list who remain absent, while some characters can grow simply tiresome at times. Nonetheless, if you're here for more of what you got in "A Game of Thrones", you'll find plenty.
That being said, Dotrice's narration is, to say the least, a mixed bag. Some characters, mainly the older male characters, are given excellent voices.

    Review of First 5 Books
I understand that there are to be 7 books in this series, but as of this writing there are only 5. I listened to them all, one right after the other, so it is difficult for me to review them separately. Besides, I think anyone new to the series should know what they're getting into right up front. However, there are no spoilers here.
I'm going to use the word "read" instead of "listen" because it's all the same to me and "read" is shorter.
My sons, both of them "men grown," have been nagging me for at least two years to read these books. Recently, they both accosted me about it from different parts of the country on my birthday, so I grudgingly agreed to try the first book. I have now read them all, as I said. My sons have been disinherited several times during the reading process. They had better hope that the last two books come out before I die.
I have read a number of reviews comparing Martin to Tolkien. This might be true if Tolkien had been a warped, sadistic bastard who enjoyed tormenting his readers. During the course of reading these books, I have called Martin everything but a good guy. Lucifer, Beelzebub, and Spawn of Satan top the list, along with accompanying adjectives. But I read all the books and am biting my nails waiting for the next one. True to his nature, however, Martin is making no promises about when that will be. Judging from the spacing of these first 5 books, I may have no fingers left by the time book 6 hits the presses. (This would help me relate better to some of his characters, I guess.)
So, for those of you who have not yet begun this series: If you are very squeamish, you'd better not start. There is a lot of torture, violence, explicit sex, and explicit violent sex. Even worse, there's some really bad language.
It is set in a world that seems to be based on Medieval England, but is not England nor any other place on this earth.

So much left unfinished, needs a sequel at best
I was a little disappointed with this novel, though I loved the three originals. The author rushed it... The most interesting parts were glossed over. SPOILERS SPOILERS I was bored with Takeo and highly disappointed by Kaede. I wish the author had instead focused the chapters on the daughters' abilities, increased the romance between the eldest daughter and the senior retainer, and spent a LOT more time focusing on the son and his ghost master ability, by leaving Kenji alive or something to teach him, or having Kenji's ghost teach him? There was just SO much potential and so many loose ends. Super disappointing. It had all the teasing elements to be an amazing story, I don't know what happened -- it just rushed to the end. Hearn's editor really failed her.
Almost like something a narrator would do to speed things along
The book needed a reference to keep up with all of the characters, it was a bloated read full of build up and then the end was too abrupt. I actually flipped back over pages to see if I'd somehow skipped over a chapter. It was if she realized she'd gone over her word allotment and had to cut things short and so she just 'told' us what happened instead of 'showing' us in the story. Almost like something a narrator would do to speed things along. The ending was a huge disappointment and certainly not a happy finish.
    Best Otorio Book
All four of the series were terrific but this last one was the best. It was thrilling to see how the end was reached. It would make a great movie.
Loved the story, didn't like the ending.
This shouldn't have been the last book in the series. The ending was rushed. There was so much left of the story to tell.
I wasn't ready for it to be over.
Over all it was a good story, just wish there was more.
... have read all 4 and this one is as good as the rest
I have read all 4 and this one is as good as the rest. excellent series. I admire the depth of research involved in a good period novel
