    Title: The Ego Tunnel
Subtitle: The Science of the Mind and the Myth of the Self
    Author: Thomas Metzinger
    Narrator: Kevin Pariseau
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-03-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 180 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
But if the self is not "real," why and how did it evolve? How does the brain construct it? Do we still have souls, free will, personal autonomy, or moral accountability?
In a time when the science of cognition is becoming as controversial as evolution, The Ego Tunnel provides a stunningly original take on the mystery of the mind.
    Critic Reviews:
"Metzinger's intended audience is the lay reader, and he does a superb job of presenting his theory and introducing philosophical issues related to consciousness." (Library Journal)
"Groundbreaking. This sophisticated understanding of the brain as an ego machine accounts remarkably well for the lived experience of being someone, a someone who transforms a bombardment of stimuli into a seamless present while still engaging in off-line planning for the future and reflection on the past." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    non-specialist literature at its best
An intelligent, thought-provoking book from a philosopher who likes to conduct experiments. Written in a very understandable style, without shying away from difficult words: non-specialist literature at its best.
The narration is excellent: interesting, varied, with a good sense of distinction between main sentence and subordinate clauses and no hesitation before uncommon words. One of those audio books that makes me long for my commute.
explorations on the margins of self
Strongly recommend this excellent work which brings modern neurobiological research and its philosophical implications.Reflections on broad spectrum which ranges From the formation of concsiousness to the rise of sense of self, future of sense of self and how this would play out in technology, economy and culture in near and distant future. This book is full of new ideas or new angles of looking at age old problems i,e consciousness, self, will and so on and so forth.
The Beginning of a Moral Storm
Lots of folks would be really angry if the scientific community said human beings were no more than very exotic machines. Yet as philosophers team up with neuro-scientists they are explaining the formerly unexplainable (perhaps spiritual) with measurable physical processes. To equate feelings with a chemical reaction in the brain is hard for some of us to believe. Yet what many humans believe about reality is also hard to believe. And so I found this book reached out to meet some of my own beliefs by treating philosophy and science less like oil and water.
It's hard to envision that all your reality is going on in your brain/mind based on a model you have evolved there from the many, many stimuli you've accumulated since birth. I can't share in your model but it's there in a tangible form of chemical and molecular configurations. But in very, very, very tiny ways neurobiologists are beginning to be able to read your mind/brain.
The Ego Tunnel reminds us that we are really living inside our heads because the flow of sights, sounds, feelings, etc. all end up in our brains where we manage it all into some sense (a model) of who we are, what is all about us and how we relate to it and them.
At this point in the book it's pretty easy to say, "So what." and switch to a murder mystery to listen to.

    Title: The Science of Fear
Subtitle: Why We Fear the Things We Should Not - and Put Ourselves in Great Danger
    Author: Daniel Gardner
    Narrator: Scott Peterson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-29-09
    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 883 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The Science of Fear is a disarmingly cheerful roundtrip shuttle to the new brain science, dissecting the fears that misguide and manipulate us every day. As award-winning journalist Daniel Gardner demonstrates, irrational fear springs from how humans miscalculate risks. Our hunter-gatherer brains evolved during the old Stone Age and struggle to make sense of a world utterly unlike the one that made them. Numbers, for instance, confuse us. Our "gut" tells us that even if there aren't "50,000 predators...on the Internet prowling for children," as a recent U.S. Attorney General claimed, then there must be an awful lot. And even if our "head" discovers that the number is baseless and no one actually knows the truth - there could be 100,000 or 500,000 - we are still more fearful simply because we heard the big number. And it is not only politicians and the media that traffic in fearmongering. Corporations fatten their bottom lines with fear. Interest groups expand their influence with fear. Officials boost their budgets with fear. With more information, warnings and scary stories coming at us every day from every direction, we are more prone than ever to needlessly worry.
    Critic Reviews:
"Excellent.... analyses everything from the media's predilection for irrational scare stories to the cynical use of fear by politicians pushing a particular agenda....What could easily have been a catalogue of misgovernance and stupidity instead becomes a cheery corrective to modern paranoia." (The Economist)

  • On Killing Audiobook by Dave Grossman

    Title: On Killing
Subtitle: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society
    Author: Dave Grossman
    Narrator: Dave Grossman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-22-09
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1559 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The psychological cost for soldiers, as witnessed by the increase in post-traumatic stress, is devastating. The psychological cost for the rest of us is even more so: contemporary civilian society, particularly the media, replicates the army's conditioning techniques and, according to Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's thesis, is responsible for our rising rate of murder among the young.
Upon its first publication, On Killing was hailed as a landmark study of the techniques the military uses to overcome the powerful reluctance to kill, of how killing affects the soldier, and of the societal implications of escalating violence.
Now, Grossman has updated this classic work to include information on 21st-century military conflicts, recent crime rates, suicide bombings, school shootings, and much more. The result is a work that is sure to be relevant and important for decades to come.
    Critic Reviews:
"This important book deserves a wide readership." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
More to it than I knew.
I always thought I had a solid combat mindset and I still think so, however this book revealed to me how little thought I had given it. I now see clearly combat mindset is not so simple as knowing you will press the trigger when you need to. This book also gave me some insights into other generations.
    Adam G
As a new platoon leader getting ready to lead 50 Soldiers into Iraq, I wanted to read something to get me prepared for a world which I know little about, the world of killing.
LTC Grossman presents a myriad of reasons soldiers will or will not kill in the vital moment. Although at this point I may not agree on the strengths to which each has, they all made sense. His section on PTSD, the mindset of the soldier after killing, and methods of overcoming both were extremely useful.
Although others may not like this book due to its lack of in depth psychological analysis, I highly recommend this book to anybody looking for an easy to understand look at the human reaction to killing.
    Deadly Accurate
Col. Grossman is a dynamic speaker in person. He reads the book in a conversational tone. This book is packed with information on the psychology of making the decision to use or not to use deadly force, as well as the emotional response to the aftermath. He is the foremost expert on the psychology of killing. I read the book several years ago and was not dissapointed by the audio.
Deep insight into the psychology of killing
As a Soldier in the US Army, I was intrigued and hesitant about reading this. I assumed that the book would be biased and uninformed, but I listened anyways. LTC Grossman provides a deep study of the human condition and the effects that the mind goes though, before, during, and after the kill. Not only does LTC Grossman explore the psyche of the killer, he touches on the use of modified operant conditioning by modern militaries to train its Soldiers to kill. Then to top it off, he talks about how this type of conditioning is being implemented in our society today, and the potential effects that it has on everyone, including children, who are a prime candidate for conditioning.

Amazing what the Mind can do
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I don't know if I would necessarily recommend this audiobook, however the performance of the book by Derren (and of course written by him) means you get a unique perspective on the story. Whilst he doesn't go though how to perform Hypnosis, he does go though the basics of how and why it works the way it does.
    Any additional comments?
I think if you're either a Derren Brown fan, or interested in Hypnosis, this audiobook is for you. It certainly gives an interesting insight into how Derren, an actual stage performer uses hypnotism. If you're looking for a quick way and verbatim script on how to hypnotise someone, this audiobook isn't really for you, but having said that, Derren does lay down some basics, but doesn't give you a blow by blow on how to Hypnotise a person (or people).
An Introduction into how 2 b as cool as Jesus 1
If you're looking for an Audio book for ?Tricks of the Mind?, then sadly this isn't it. Although there are many E-Books (& similar) claiming to provide short-cuts to Derren Brown's secrets, most are sadly not the genuine article & the best way of discovering his techniques is through reading it.
What this is (in its own words) is 'Crumbs from the Table of the Master'; it is a taster of some of the best bits of the book in order to whet your appetite for the real thing.
This particular section covers Hypnosis. This is better covered in the book (e.g. the Dormitory Elephant), but the glimpse here is revealing into how to create & build a hypnotic 'trance'. Although he is brief, the material here can be used effectively to become an amateur hypnotist since all the technique requires is confidence.
(As an important aside for motorists (such as myself): this section doesn't use any actual hypnotic techniques, so it is alright to use in the car.)
So, this audio clip is not a complete work-through of ?Tricks of the Mind? but is more a glimpse at its contents in order to draw you further into the mystery of his magic.
If you, like me, enjoy audio material that is moderately stretching but not as cerebrally painful as Charles Dickens, then this is surprisingly enjoyable.
If however you are after finding out his secrets (so that you can fool Clod-pates, Halfwits & Harlequins AND Charlie-sat-before-you), then you should get the book instead.
Either way (to use one of the NLP techniques from another section), it is difficult to avoid the allure of the mysterious...
    Simply Hypnotic
Derren Brown has received a lot of attention with his Channel 4 TV shows demonstrating the amazing ability to influence people using hypnosis and other psychological techniques. This book gives an excellent overview of the ideas and concepts of hypnosis and how he uses them. He is very careful to describe the difference between theraputic hypnosis and stage hypnosis and the ethics associated with using these techniques. I don't think a beginner could learn hypnosis from scratch using this book alone. He provides a few excellent examples, but does not describe in sufficient detail the process of putting someone into a hypnotic state.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 149 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
One of the great, but often unmentioned, causes of both happiness and misery is the quality of our environment: the kinds of chairs, walls, buildings, and streets that surround us. And yet, a concern for architecture is too often described as frivolous, even self-indulgent. Alain de Botton starts from the idea that where we are heavily influences who we can be, and argues that it is architecture's task to stand as an eloquent reminder of our full potential.
    Critic Reviews:
"De Botton has a marvelous knack for coming at weighty subjects from entertainingly eccentric angles." (Seattle Times)
"With originality, verve, and wit, de Botton explains how we find reflections of our own values in the edifices we make....Altogether satisfying." (San Francisco Chronicle)
"Entertaining and stimulating....The strength of his book is that it encourages us to open our eyes and really look at the buildings in which we live and work." (Publishers Weekly)

    LOVED it!
If you could sum up The Architecture of Happiness in three words, what would they be?
Verbalizes the difficult to articulate feelings that one experiences when experiencing a man-made place.
What did you like best about this story?
It's an unusual and difficult to tackle area. Nebulous. But the author has gotten the lightning into the bottle, as they say.
What does Simon Vance bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Vance brings to the material the character of a like-able and effusive aesthete and bon-vivant. The perfect voice for the elevated and of the moment ideas in the book.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The impossible book to capture on film has been made.
    Wonderful book
Alian de Botton is a great writer and this work demonstrates that beautifully. If you're at all interested in this book or aesthetic philosophy it is a must have for you. Also be sure to check out Alian's YouTube channel "The School of Life)
    Valuable Book
Beautiful writing that offers thoughtful commentary on the biases and aspirations that shape our built environment.
    Interesting but not satisfying
The narrator was good. The book was observations with little thesis. The observations were interesting, but clinical. I was searching for a perspective, but there was none. Perhaps the author should have narrowed his subject matter to one city or architectural style.

    Editorial Reviews:
In the nonfiction audiobook The Authoritarians, psychologist Bob Altemeyer shares his research on the aggressive and hostile nature of the authoritarian personality and the rise of the Right-Wing Authoritarian personality in the United States. He wrote the book in 2006, during George W. Bushs second term as president. In a clear and direct voice, Altemeyer performs his own fascinating work. He details how authoritarianism is destroying traditional conservatism and what this means for the future of American politics and democracy.
    Members Reviews:
    Settle Down Authoritarian Readers.
If you misinterpret the message of this book, you will find that it appears to be some professor trashing what appears to be single political groups. He isn't. The book does draw parallels between his theories on human behavior and current political issues, but if, upon reading this book, you find that he is getting too political, you are missing the message. These are observations, not opinions (for the most part).
    Muddle Headed Followers.
This turned out to be one of my favorite Audible books so far along with The Drunkards Walk. How Randomness Rules our Lives. I think it's actually an important book that's been flying below the radar because it wasn't commercially published. At least not at first, it may be now. Liberals, moderates, and conservatives alike, really need to read it. When you've finished you'll better understand not just Nazi Germany, but the IRA in Ireland, the Cultural Revolution under Mao, the war in Yugoslavia under Karadzic and even Pat Robertson. Explaining Pat Robertson is no small accomplishment but the authors index is the best explanation yet of radical Muslims as well. Have you ever wondered why there seems to be an endless supply of people willing to blow themselves up? Well that's because there is an endless supply and this book explains why that is. It all revolves around a way of thinking called the RWA index. RWA stands for Right Wing Authoritarian. An unfortunate title since it doesn't help his credibility with conservatives and conservatives need to read this as much as anyone. He chose this title I assume because in the US and Canada these people tend to gravitate to the political right more than the left but they're found on the left as well. A better title might have been the Muddle Headed Followers index. The index itself is politically neutral. Everyone knows a few of these of people. They're the ones in the office who don't reason from fact to opinion. Instead, they choose an opinion that fits the way they want the world to be, then select facts that support them. I personally know so many of these people I've begun to think that reasoning from fact to opinion must be something rare and difficult and maybe should be taught as a mandatory part of a civics class. It doesn't seem to come naturally in my area. But then look at where I'm from.
    Very good
This is a good choice for your next audio book. It's about the psychology of politics, why certain people are so angry when they discuss politics. There is a certain mindset and it is explained here. Very very interesting and read by the author very well.
    A must-read for...

One of the best Mental Power books I have read
By reading this book you'll learn one of the best things we can learn in life: Breathing! None of us breath properly; fear and stress make us hold our breath, and that's the way we learn to breath for the rest of our lives. By breathing properly we get healthier, we get clarity of mind, we relax, as we have the most powerful stress relief, our own breathing! We do not pay attention to it, because we are so used to it, But breathing is the biggest gift we got! without that, there is nothing! If it were just about that, it would be more than enough to buy it and to have it in our nightstand table, because every time something comes out, there you go, there is the help you need to get your mind calm, so you can find the best solutions for whatever comes to you. Every time you read it you learn more and more, this is not a book to read and forget about it. This is a book to read and to keep forever! You will never get tired of it. As you realize that every time you hear it, or read it, you will learn something new, as you'll understand it better and better, every time!

    Driving Towards Traffic
"Traffic" freaked me out. I knew that 40,000 people died each year on our roads. And I knew that a car accident was the most likely way that trauma would encroach into my world. Vanderbilt gives me lots more things to worry about (like Dr's have the 2nd highest accident rate, pick-up trucks are dangerous to everyone else, new cars have higher accident rates then older cars, and intersections are bad news for bikers, runners, and drivers.
This is a book I'd like my girls to read as a prerequisite to getting their license (and I'll install the driver cam that Vanderbilt writes about being effective in teaching young drivers defensive skills).
Read the book. Slow down on the roads.
Thumbs up. May not be for everyone.
You know, I'd have to disagree with the first member review.
I purchased this audio book to take a break from science fiction and I blazed through this book while... listening to traffic. Yes, the author does present a lot of various studies and data, but he manages to put everything into a sort of context that progresses smoothly. Heck - he's even able to make a joke every once in a while.
He presents different aspects of traffic: psychology, sociology, traffic engineering, safety devices, etc. All these various topics seem to merge together in the final conclusion, no pun intended. So, I think in the end, you have to be able to tolerate through a lot of numbers, so to speak, otherwise I'm sure you might get kind of lost in the presentation of the material. If you don't care about understanding the various mechanisms in traffic, you're not going to get anything out of this book.
I did really enjoy this book - a lot of the topics I found personally interesting and I walked away with a slightly different perspective of the world around me.
    Interesting Content, Well Narrated
While this book may not have all of the answers, it is far more thoughtful and thorough than some of the reviewers let on. I read/listen to mostly science books and biographies, but I got this book on a whim and was pleasantly surprised.
The author is philosophical and witty, and is rarely patronizing or redundant. The content flows nicely and the narration is spot on - making it well suited for the audio format. If you are looking for a good audiobook that is a change of pace from your typical genre, give this book a try.
    Interesting Read
This book does have a lot of statistics but it organizes them around certain themes to make them more comprehensible. I found it very interesting. It made me look at driving differently. Hopefully it made me a better driver. Certainty a better educated one.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
When it comes to making decisions in our lives, we think we're in control. We think we're making smart, rational choices. But are we? In a series of illuminating, often surprising experiments, MIT behavioral economist Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. Blending everyday experience with groundbreaking research, Ariely explains how expectations, emotions, social norms, and other invisible, seemingly illogical forces skew our reasoning abilities.
Not only do we make astonishingly simple mistakes every day, but we make the same types of mistakes, Ariely discovers. We consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. We fail to understand the profound effects of our emotions on what we want, and we overvalue what we already own. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predictable - making us predictably irrational.
From drinking coffee to losing weight, from buying a car to choosing a romantic partner, Ariely explains how to break through these systematic patterns of thought to make better decisions. Predictably Irrational will change the way we interact with the world - one small decision at a time.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio.

Well researched, well written, & well read
"Behavioral economics" - what this book is about - is the missing link between economic theory and how real consumers behave. More than a fascinating glimpse into our irrational decision-making processes, marketers and entrepreneurs will learn a lot about their customers.
Bonus points go to the author for actually conducting most of the research in the book (along with his MIT colleagues). Readers win because, in addition to well documented findings, we are treated to insightful and often funny stories about the studies themselves. By adding context to the research, the findings are much more memorable than dry statistics and analysis.
The narrator is thoroughly engaging and does a fabulous job telling the numerous stories and preserving the author's wit. My mind didn't wander as much, so I remembered more and rewound less.
Finally, BRAVO to the publisher and Audible for including a downloadable supplement that includes the graphs and illustrations from the print edition. THIS PRACTICE SHOULD BE STANDARD. I've listened to many non-fiction books, only to later see the print edition and discover how much visual content I missed. THANK YOU for truly delivering on the promise of audio non-fiction: spoken word text that preserves the unspoken, visual content of the author's work.
An Examination of Our Irrational Decisions
What a fascinating book about our choices and the reasons we make the decisions we do. If you have ever wondered why you buy things you hadn't intended on-- this is a book for you. I am hoping that just being aware of the things I do that I can see are irrational will stop because I now have more insight. We will see.
    An interesting and entertaining listen.
    Extremely good book
This book deserves the 4-5 stars that many, many, people have given.
I almost did not purchase this title solely because another reviewer said "I read this book already, it was called Blink . . . .
