    Publisher's Summary:
How do you deal with those that break the law? If their aim is to evade you, how do you identify them? If their aim is to lie, how do you interview them? If they don't see their actions are wrong, how do you help them to successfully reform?
Criminal psychology is the discipline which tackles these challenges head on. From the signals which give away when were lying to the psychological profiling of violent offenders, this exhaustive guide, written by the UKs top experts, is the perfect introduction.
    Editorial Reviews:
Pop culture is obsessed with criminal psychology - film, television, and literature is replete with examples of heroes and heroines attempting to get into the mind of a criminal. But criminal psychology is more complicated than that, and this volume, composed by a slate of experts, attempts to explain this fascinating science to the layperson, with an intrepid, character-filled narration from Richard Aspel making for a compelling listen. Taking listeners from investigative skills like profiling and policing, to courtroom issues like eyewitness testimony, and even stepping into a criminal's shoes to discuss the experience of imprisonment, this diverse collection provides a well-rounded and totally engrossing overview of criminal psychology.

Excellent Balance to Criminal Profile Titles
What did you love best about Criminal Psychology: Bolinda Beginner Guides?
This is an excellent source for learning about the specifics of criminal behavior. For example, I now understand why an instructor from a homicide investigation class repeatedly used the phrase "we covet what we see." It's related to the term "distance decay" and explains why offenders commit crimes near their homes.
The book also adds balance against the nonfiction books written by, and about, professional criminal profilers. Come to think of it, if profilers are so successful, why are there still so many unsolved crimes?
The point is, there is no perfect solution, formula or science for neutralizing criminal conduct. However, this book is an excellent tool for those who want to understand why we do what we do.
What other book might you compare Criminal Psychology: Bolinda Beginner Guides to and why?
More info once I finish the book.
    Criminal Psychology and Terrorist Leadership
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Criminal Psychology is one of the few technical audio books that I truly enjoyed; however, now that Ive listened to it, Ill have to get the hard copy version so I can make notes and use it as a reference. The variety and range of examples made the concepts relatively easy to understand. It was also nice to contrast this work with my research on terrorist organizational behavior (ISBN-13: 978-0615687391). There are many possible correlations between the psychology of criminals (or forensic psychology of terrorist leaders) and the profiling of terrorist organizations. I recommend this book to those interested in the behaviors of individuals, as well as groups, particularly as an alternate reference when researching terrorism.
    Good but too superficial
    Any additional comments?
I did like it, but I found there wasn't as much depth of content that I was after.

  • Quiet Audiobook by Susan Cain

    Title: Quiet
Subtitle: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking
    Author: Susan Cain
    Narrator: Kathe Mazur
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-24-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 11372 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Goghs sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.
Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegies birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the 20th century and explores its far-reaching effects. She talks to Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked. And she draws on cutting-edge research in psychology and neuroscience to reveal the surprising differences between extroverts and introverts.
Perhaps most inspiring, she introduces us to successful introverts--from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Finally, she offers invaluable advice on everything from how to better negotiate differences in introvert-extrovert relationships to how to empower an introverted child to when it makes sense to be a "pretend extrovert."
This extraordinary book has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how introverts see themselves.
    Critic Reviews:
"An intriguing and potentially life-altering examination of the human psyche that is sure to benefit both introverts and extroverts alike." (Kirkus)
"Cain gives excellent portraits of a number of introverts and shatters misconceptions. Cain consistently holds the readers interest by presenting individual profiles, looking at places dominated by extroverts (Harvard Business School) and introverts (a West Coast retreat center), and reporting on the latest studies. Her diligence, research, and passion for this important topic has richly paid off.-" (Publishers Weekly)
"An intelligent and often surprising look at what makes us who we are." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Thought provoking and Uplifting.... A++++++++!!!!!
Every since I learnt what an introvert was I knew I was one but used to wonder how I thrived as well as I did in social situations at times. Susan Cain not only shed light on this concept but on so many things in this title. With an excellent combination of thought provoking narrative, uplifting message and downright honest truth I would suggest "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" by Susan Cain to anyone.
I almost gave Kathe Mazur 4 stars for her narration instead of 5 stars but in true introvert fashion, I sat down and reanalyzed her performance in my mind and in the end found myself giving her 5 stars.

  • Out of Our Minds Audiobook by Ken Robinson

    Title: Out of Our Minds
    Subtitle: Learning to Be Creative
    Author: Ken Robinson
    Narrator: John Lee
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 265 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
There is a paradox. As children, most of us think we are highly creative; as adults many of us think we are not. What changes as children grow up? Organizations across the globe are competing in a world that is changing faster than ever. They say they need people who can think creatively, who are flexible and quick to adapt. Too often they can't find them. Why not? In this provocative and inspiring book, Ken Robinson addresses three vital questions:
In this extensively revised and updated version of his best-selling classic, Ken Robinson offers a groundbreaking approach to understanding creativity in education and in business. He argues that people and organizations everywhere are dealing with problems that originate in schools and universities and that many people leave education with no idea at all of their real creative abilities. Out of Our Minds is a passionate and powerful call for radically different approaches to leadership, teaching and professional development to help us all to meet the extraordinary challenges of living and working in the 21st century.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ken Robinson writes brilliantly about the different ways in which creativity is undervalued and ignored . . . especially in our educational systems." (John Cleese)

    Needs a different narrator
    Any additional comments?
Am on my second listen and am still struggling to get through this. Sir Ken Robinson's work is fascinating as usual, but I am totally put off by the narrator. The narration is flat and clinical. I find my mind wandering when I listen to this narrator. He reads with all the feeling of the electronic voice in the Atlanta airport trains. I am sure this book has much to offer, but the narration makes it seem more like a text book ... and we all know how fascinating those are. In light of the narration, I would recommend the print edition.
    Draaaaaaaag
I don't write many reviews and I enjoyed watching Ken Robinson's discussion with Eckhart Tolle. His presence was wonderful. This book was mentioned and I decided to download the Audible version. I am into chapter 3 and the ceaseless story of numbers, how powerful computers are and will be, along with the population growth is WAY OVER THE TOP!!!
OK, enough with this nonsense! If it continues much longer I will change my review to ZERO stars and request a refund.
    What was his editor thinking?!
    Not as creative as expected
I already knew that schools and other institutions discourage creativity. I bought this audiobook to get a better understanding of how this phenomenum works.
His definition of creativiy is not original, and his points can all be found in other books with better explanations to them.
It's OK to listen to this if you have nothing else. He does provide a few jokes and interesting stories.
Oh, and I should mention that I've stopped listening to it an hour from the end.
    Terrible narration.

  • Now You See It Audiobook by Cathy N. Davidson

    Title: Now You See It
Subtitle: How the Brain Science of Attention Will Transform the Way We Live, Work, and Learn
    Author: Cathy N. Davidson
    Narrator: Laural Merlington
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-18-11
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 95 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
When Duke University gave free iPods to the freshman class in 2003, critics said they were wasting their money. Yet when the students in practically every discipline invented academic uses for the music players, suddenly the idea could be seen in a new light - as an innovative way to turn learning on its head.
Using cutting-edge research on the brain, Cathy N. Davidson show how attention blindness has produced one of our society's greatest challenges: while we acknowledge the great changes of the digital age, most of us still toil in schools and workplaces designed for the last century.
Now You See It introduces us to visionaries and groundbreaking ideas from schools with curriculums built around video games to companies that train workers using virtual environments. A refreshingly optimistic argument and a bold embrace of our connected, collaborative future.
    Members Reviews:
    3 Reasons to Read
1 - The Academic Connection: Davidson is the Duke professor/administrator behind the original iPod program. Back in 2004, Davidson and her colleagues cooked up a plan to give each freshman an iPod, and then an iPod to every member of any class that came up with an academic experiment around the technology. We might not remember just how controversial this experiment was, or the degree to which Duke was criticized for wasting money and getting away from the core educational mission of a university. Turns out, the iPod experiment succeeded on numerous fronts, including launching student driven podcasting, class recording and sharing, learning object creation, and innovative science and language applications. Davidson recounts the iPod experiment in the book, as well as other experiments that she has been involved in as an administrator and in her own courses. She is a risk taker, an attribute often in short supply amongst our academic leaders.
2 - Brain Science and The Big Picture: One of Davidson's big points in Now You See It is that we continue to run our institutions, our schools and workplaces, as if we still lived in the industrial economy in which they were originally built to serve. We continue to act as if information was scarce, and that work had to regulated, monitored, and packaged around the needs of production. Digital tools, mobile devices, and ubiquitous web based communication give us new tools to accomplish our (increasingly collaborative and brain based) work. Research consistently demonstrates that we perform better when we are creatively engaged in tasks in which we are intrinsically motivated. Yet we continue to insist on end-of-term grades (postsecondary), end-of-year high stakes tests (secondary/primary - No Child Left Behind), cubicles and 9-to-5 face time.
3 - An Antidote to the Anti-Digital: Davidson has zero time for the "dumbest generation" or the "Internet is making us stupid" arguments. She references cognitive and brain science research to demonstrate the plasticity of our brains to cope with and thrive in our digitally stimulated environments. She talks about educational institutions that have harnessed game-based principles to create immersive (and highly successful) learning environments.

    Fascinating look at human desires
Highly recommend. Candid insight into (mostly) taboo topics. Will create some ahah moments and help make sense of many personal experiences.
    Thorough explanation of "why?"
This book is a must read for everyone curious to understand "why" men and women act the way they do in regards to sex and romance. This book is a fascinating exploration in to many different subjects that are foreign to most. Even chapters that don't relate to ones own personal experiences are captivating. You get to understand the thought process behind being male, female, straight, gay, and why you/they look at the sexual content you/they do. Exceptional book. Listened to twice.
    A Great Idea, Humanely Executed
Using Internet search histories and industry practices to explore and explain human sexuality is a great idea, and this book is a fun tour through the diverse and curious forest of human sexuality and thought. I learned a lot about general tastes and things in the world that have often surprised me, helping me to notice things in the world I had not noticed before, such as the way women will slip into and out of desire, how many men are into feet and what the deal is with straight porn showing so many "chicks with dicks" and hentai.
A slightly simplified but ultimately kind look at the diversity of human desire, with some speculation on how and why it is that way. A good read to understand more of oneself and to look with mercy on the weird tastes of our fellow, two and three-legged pervert: A fun romp.
    My-Oh-My!
    Any additional comments?
I don't know if all the theories presented in this book are true but the ride getting to them was sure interesting! Packed full of information about things that have perplexed me for years. And I liked that the authors paid as much attention to information concerning "normal" pornography as well as "abnormal" tastes. Well rounded. If the explosion of internet porn has ever perplexed you or you have asked yourself, "Why would anyone want to look at that?" this is the book for you.
    Pseudoscience at its worst
Men are simpleminded creatures who just want to "aim and fire" at a anything that moves, and women are always analyzing things with their inner detective, craving romance and real commitment. I have now spared you a credit much better spend somewhere else. From analyzing a whole lot of porn, Internet searches, and picking and choosing research, these blokes decided that they are actually capable of making up nonsense theories based on crack pot ideas of how it might have been to be a caveman. Go back and study some actual biological anthropology, then talk to some actual scientists about how science works, then rewrite it please. The idea is really good. But it's a little like putting on green glasses, and then proclaiming the world green.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4471 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The Psychopath Test is a fascinating journey through the minds of madness. Jon Ronson's exploration of a potential hoax being played on the world's top neurologists takes him, unexpectedly, into the heart of the madness industry. An influential psychologist who is convinced that many important CEOs and politicians are, in fact, psychopaths, teaches Ronson how to spot these high-flying individuals by looking out for little telltale verbal and nonverbal clues. And so Ronson, armed with his new psychopath-spotting abilities, enters the corridors of power.
He spends time with a death-squad leader institutionalized for mortgage fraud in Coxsackie, New York; a legendary CEO whose psychopathy has been speculated about in the press; and a patient in an asylum for the criminally insane who insists he's sane and certainly not a psychopath. Ronson not only solves the mystery of the hoax but also discovers, disturbingly, that sometimes the personalities at the helm of the madness industry are, with their drives and obsessions, as mad in their own way as those they study. And that relatively ordinary people are, more and more, defined by their maddest edges.
    Critic Reviews:
"Engrossing.... This book brings droll wit to buoy this fascinating journey through 'the madness business.'" (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Quirky, intriguing and educational.
The Psychopath Test was my first introduction to Jon Ronson, both as an author and as a narrator. And such is the nature of both his idiosyncratic writing style and vocal delivery, that it took me a while to realize that I quite liked it.
This isn't exactly what I was looking for. Again, not being previously familiar with the author (I'm a little more familiar now), I expected a more serious tone. Ronson treats his material seriously, but there is often a tongue-in-cheek aspect to his writing, leaving the reader wondering if the author means EXACTLY what he's saying. Once I got used to the style, I found it enjoyable.
Although this book is full of information about psychopaths, it will leave you even less sure about their nature--if it can even be said that psychopaths have a nature. TPT isn't what I'd call scholarly journalism, but it's an eye-opener nonetheless.
    Interesting but wandering
The book is constructed like a travelogue of a journey. The author arrives in one spot and then pursues each thing that catches his interest without any clear plan. This makes for an interesting path through the "madness industry": we meet new people, hear new things, and get quite a bit of the author's own thinking about these people and these things (perhaps too much of the author's thinking) and then the journey is over. Like travel done in this way one is left richer in stories and perspective but there has been no comprehensive survey, no particular goal has been achieved, and all one's evidence is anecdotal.
If you are looking for a critique of, state of, or even definition of "The Madness Industry" you will come away disappointed.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 22 mins

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 195 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In Life after Life, Raymond Moody investigates more than 100 case studies of people who experienced "clinical death" and were subsequently revived. First published in 1975, this classic exploration of life after death started a revolution in popular attitudes about the afterlife and established Dr. Moody as the world's leading authority in the field of near-death experiences.
Life after Life sold millions of copies and forever changed the way we understand both death and life. The extraordinary stories presented here provide evidence that there is life after physical death, as Moody recounts the testimonies of those who have been to the "other side" and back, all bearing striking similarities. These moving and inspiring accounts give us a glimpse of the peace and unconditional love that await us all.
    Members Reviews:
Good for it's time, but better books currently out
This was a wonderful book considering that it was published in 1975. Raymond Moody is to be commended for his wonderful efforts in this field. A true pioneer. However, I much preferred the newer "Evidence of the Afterlife" (Dr. Jeffrey Long and Paul Perry) I pretty much felt this book was a waste of my credits. Nothing new, and not enough.
Interesting book on the Near Death Experience
    Any additional comments?
Having read "Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences,"by Jeffrey Long and Paul Perry, before "Life After Life," at first I thought Dr. Moody's book was like reading something I had already read before. Not bad, but not anything new. I was pleasantly surprised, however, when it went off in a few unexpected directions.
"Life After Life," like "Evidence of the Afterlife," attempts to put together some rudimentary statistics and find common elements of NDEs (Near Death Experiences). I say rudimentary, because Dr. Moody says the number of cases he compiled is not high enough for deep statistical analysis. This is in contrast to "Evidence of the Afterlife," which compiled a large number of cases from all over the world through use of the Internet.
It should be noted that with "Life After Life" being published long before "Evidence of the Afterlife," the cases compiled by the Near Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF) are almost identical, making the two books very complimentary to each other.
Where "Life After Life," shined, however, was a section on comparing modern NDEs to some ancient texts. Among those texts were, The Bible, selected writings of Plato, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, and Emanuel Swedenborg, a Swedish philosopher and scientist from the late 1600s who also wrote about the subject of the afterlife.
Of those texts mentioned, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, in my opinion, read so much like an NDE that one could attribute parts of it to someone that had nearly died during a car wreck in 1992, and it would hardly raise an eyebrow among those familiar with NDE experiences. Once again, showing that the ancients had a higher degree of knowledge and wisdom than we care to give them credit for.
A few other topics were also discussed that were not included in "Evidence of the Afterlife." One was on hallucinatory drugs, such as peyote.
