    Narrator: Professor Andrew Newberg
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 12 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-08-13
    Publisher: The Great Courses

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Does God exist? Do we have a soul? Is it possible to make contact with a spiritual realm? How should we respond to the divine? Will life continue beyond death? Most people, whether deeply religious or outright doubters of any spiritual power, have probably pondered these questions for themselves. In fact, the religious impulse is so powerfully pervasive that neuroscience has posed a provocative question: Are our brains wired to worship?
Now, in a series of 24 riveting lectures from an award-winning scholar and practicing neuroscientist, you can explore the exciting field of neurotheology - the new discipline aimed at understanding the connections between our brains and different kinds of religious phenomena. Using an academic, experimental approach into what he calls "objective measures of spirituality," Professor Newberg attempts to explain what others have previously only guessed at: the neuroscientific basis for why religion and spirituality have played such a prominent role in human life.
In these captivating lectures, you'll learn how religious experiences originate, their meaning, and the reasons why religion plays such a huge role in human experience - peering directly into the seat of all human thought and action as you delve into the relationship between brain function and spirituality.
A leading researcher in neurotheology, Professor Newberg offers you innovative approaches to ancient beliefs and practices. Using brain imaging and other cutting-edge physiological studies, he helps you to better understand how the brain controls or responds to religious and spiritual beliefs and behavior.

    Engaging
When a topic like Science and Religious Experience is the focus I have a little caution. Depending on the authors bias and preconceptions the results can be more of a soap box for personal opinion than an objective study.
I did not find this to be the case with this. Through the whole listen I didn't feel any bias was present but rather a thorough study of religious experience and true scientific analysis of possible explanations.
When a solid scientific explanation for something could not be called upon to describe something there is no attempt to try and use that as some sort of proof that it must have a divine source. Nor is a divine source ruled out. It is left as a question.
There is a great deal of information packed into these lectures and I believe it is a great listen to anyone religious to shed light on some of the experiences that can be brought into question and by non-religious to help understand better what religious experience is to a person who has one.
This is by far the best source I have found for the latest research and information on this subject.
    A WARNING...
There are two groups of people who are going to be apt to preemptively judge this "book by its cover:" religious people and atheists. This is NOT a book about religion. Newberg does personally have a religious bent (neurological tendency?), but those seeking a scientific proof of God are going to have to go elsewhere. This is NOT a promotion of religion. So do not come at this book and have a knee-jerk negative reaction because of two words in the title.

Title: Philosophy of Mind: Brains, Consciousness, and Thinking Machines
    Author: The Great Courses

Length: 12 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-08-13
    Publisher: The Great Courses
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 553 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The quest to understand the mind has motivated some of history's most profound thinkers. But only in our own time are we beginning to see the true complexity of this quest, as today's philosophers draw on the latest evidence from neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, and other fields to probe deeply into the inner workings of the mind.
These 24 stimulating lectures from an award-winning teacher and honored scholar present a clear, systematic, and compelling introduction to the philosophy of mind, exploring all of the major theories, including: Dualism, which holds that body and mind are separate substances; Behaviorism and Functionalism, which stress behavior and interactions with the world as clues to the mind's inner workings;. Idealism, the view that the physical world is an illusion and that only the mental realm exists; and the "antitheories" of mind, which posit that subjective mental experiences are fundamentally inexplicable and will always remain a mystery.
Examining the most intriguing questions and influential theories in what can often be a complex and often controversial intellectual terrain, Professor Grim sorts out the different approaches to give you the pros and cons of each.

    Stellar Course!
Patrick Grim lays out the groundwork for the major theories of mind and what it means to "be a being" with consciousness, thought and self-awareness. The course is in depth and very intelligent, but presented in such a way as the layman will readily understand if proper attention is paid to the lectures. Another Great Courses lecture series on this same topic by John Searle will also be quite helpful. Once these courses are completed, I recommend moving on to books like Brian Christian's The Most Human Human (artificial intelligence) V. Ramachandran's The Tell-Tale Brain (neurology and pathology) and Sebastian Seung's Connectome (neurology, consciousness and self-awareness). Grim and Searle's lectures are a wonderful place to start on the pathway to learning about the philosophy, physiology and psychology of who you are and why there is a "who you are."
Not much meat to this course
The narrator was good and I enjoyed listening to him. But at the end I did not feel I got much out of the course. It really just seemed to be a series of comparisons between various theories with much time spent on theories that have been for the most part thrown out. I was hoping that the course would spend most of its time delving into the most current theories and really explaining what the state of the art is on thinking, mind, and consciousness. But if that is what you area looking for, you will be disappointed.
    Brilliant book for A.I.

Title: The Passions: Philosophy and the Intelligence of Emotions
    Author: The Great Courses
    Narrator: Professor Robert C. Solomon

Length: 12 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-08-13
    Publisher: The Great Courses

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Conventional wisdom suggests there is a sharp distinction between emotion and reason. Emotions are seen as inferior, disruptive, primitive, and even bestial forces. These 24 remarkable lectures suggest otherwise-that emotions have intelligence and provide personal strategies that are vitally important to our everyday lives of perceiving, evaluating, appraising, understanding, and acting in the world.
Take a tour of Professor Solomon's more than three-decade-long intellectual struggle to reach an understanding of emotions, which he argues are, "the key to the meaning of life." A distinguished philosopher himself, Professor Solomon's lectures unfold as a rich dialogue with other philosophers, including Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Adam Smith, Nietzsche, William James, Freud, Heidegger, and Sartre.
In your exploration, you'll address such questions as: how do we distinguish emotions from feelings, such as heartache? What is the meaning of our emotions, and how do they serve to enrich and guide our lives? Are there a determinable number of basic emotions that serve as building blocks for the range of emotions we experience? Is an emotion such as jealousy a genetic trait shared by all humans - or is it something learned? As you listen to these lectures, prepare to think: Think about your own emotions; think about what you observe in others; think about the enormous body of research and conjecture on this fascinating topic as Professor Solomon takes you on a challenging and stimulating journey. The more we puzzle over the nature of emotions, the deeper the mystery becomes. It is a mystery that is by no means solved, but one that repays in careful, philosophical analysis.

Meditation on emotions - Slow to start but worth the experience
This course is broken into three main section. The first seems to be long and somewhat tedious- however it is a good setup for the other two sections. Overall a good meditation on the topic of emotions.
    The impeccable Robert Solomon
I've been a fan of Robert C. Solomon's work for a long time, he was first introduced to me in Richard Linkletter's film Waking Life, where the director actually crashed one of the professor's classes and filmed it and then later interviewed him in the same movie. I also had the privilege of reading his textbook introducing philosophy for my philosophy 101 while I was an undergrad. This collection of lectures on human emotions and the philosophical views with neuroscience were very enlightening and Robert has a way of delivering his lectures in an entertaining way as a storyteller.
    Interesting... in parts
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The presenter does have some interesting insights to contribute, but the lectures are uneven. He appears to be largely unaided by written text, and it shows. Space-fillers, such as "sort of" and "kind of" abound, creating the impression of lacking precision and ad-libbing. The ideas are often not well-supported to empirical research, and even attempts are made to adopt a social constructionist approach (although the latter happens without much conviction).

    Publisher's Summary:
Neuroscience, Psychology, and Religion is the second title published in the new Templeton Science and Religion Series. In this volume, Malcolm Jeeves and Warren S. Brown provide an overview of the relationship between neuroscience, psychology, and religion that is academically sophisticated, yet accessible to the general listener.
The authors introduce key terms; thoroughly chart the histories of both neuroscience and psychology, with a particular focus on how these disciplines have interfaced religion through the ages; and explore contemporary approaches to both fields, reviewing how current science/religion controversies are playing out today. Throughout, they cover issues like consciousness, morality, concepts of the soul, and theories of mind. Their examination of topics like brain imaging research, evolutionary psychology, and primate studies show how recent advances in these areas can blend harmoniously with religious belief, since they offer much to our understanding of humanity's place in the world. Jeeves and Brown conclude their comprehensive and inclusive survey by providing an interdisciplinary model for shaping the ongoing dialogue.
Sure to be of interest to both academics and curious intellectuals, Neuroscience, Psychology, and Religion addresses important age-old questions and demonstrates how modern scientific techniques can provide a much more nuanced range of potential answers to those questions.
    Critic Reviews:
The authors successfully weave together empirical research findings with philosophical and theological discussions to provide a clear and lucid account of this developing area of study. . . . Overall, this is an excellent book. I would fully recommend it to psychologists and psychiatrists and anyone with an interest in this area. (

More of her personal story than a learning tool
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I'm somewhat neutral, although it has been a bit boring and not straight to any point(s).- I'm about halfway through and the author is quite tiring with her personal stories and quotes and opinions. There doesn't seem to be much useful astrological information in terms of the basics. She hasn't left any good, definite understanding about anything she's writing about thus far. I really want to like this book because I love astrology and truly believe it is an ancient science of sorts. The north and south node dynamic hasn't been a very clear one for me to grasp in my overall understanding, nor has it seemed particularly significant- and I wish the author would do a better idea of defining it's purpose and useful ways to understand their influence in our charts.
What was one of the most memorable moments of North Node Astrology?
None... actually her story about her divorce and then dating her husband kind of annoyed me. I almost feel like instead of really understanding astrology and objectively applying it when sure about the effects, her theories are much more malleable and subjective and the way she understands things are only in terms of her own life- if at all. Like she explains away her life circumstances with astrological transits and aspects which another astrologer may not necessarily see as having a significant effect, if any (noticeable) at all.
How could the performance have been better?
It was incredibly nasal and robotic sounding.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Not at all. It would basically be the author's life played out in a movie.... not enough astrological info to be intriguing.
    Any additional comments?
    I'm going to return it.
    Loved This Book!
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a better understanding of Astrology. It's a wonderful book, and I'm grateful to have stumbled upon it.
It will open the door to your true purpose in life. Now that the door is opened, it's time to live life to your full potential.
Thanks for sharing this book with the world. I'll be forever thankful.

Two such means in which behavior can occur is through both social and environmental influences. Environmental influences can include reaching for an umbrella on a rainy day, and social influences may include playing sports because other peers are engaging in such activity.
These social and environmental influences are not concrete, so too is behavior unpredictable. The unpredictability of behavior in itself may be enough reason to investigate the social and environmental influences on behavior.

    Publisher's Summary:
Provocative and timely: A pioneering neurocriminologist introduces the latest biological research into the causes of - and potential cures for - criminal behavior.
A leading criminologist who specializes in the neuroscience behind criminal behavior, Adrian Raine introduces a wide range of new scientific research into the origins and nature of violence and criminal behavior. He explains how impairments to areas of the brain that control our ability to experience fear, make decisions, and feel empathy can make us more likely to engage in criminal behavior. He applies this new understanding of the criminal mind to some of the most well-known criminals in history. And he clearly delineates the pressing considerations this research demands: What are its implications for our criminal justice system? Should we condemn and punish individuals who have little no control over their behavior? Should we act preemptively with people who exhibit strong biological predispositions to becoming dangerous criminals? These are among the thorny issues we can no longer ignore as our understanding of criminal behavior grows.
    Critic Reviews:
"Violence comes in many varieties. Poverty and political persecution are good examples of violence, but so are mass killings and rape. Adrian Raine has spent decades investigating the latter variety. His book is an exhaustive, unvarnished survey of what is known about the neurobiological correlates of physical violence. It is deeply informative and it makes for disquieting reading. It wisely refrains from claiming a single cause for the problem or advocating a single solution. It is an indispensable reference." (Antonio Damasio, David Dornsife Professor of Neuroscience, and Director, Brain and Creativity Institute, University of Southern California, Author of Descartes' Error and Self Comes to Mind)
    Members Reviews:
Interesting Book the Roots of Abnormal Behavior
Please bear with me as I first talk about what drew me to this book, that requires a lot of explanation about James Fallon, who is a neuroscientist but who did not write this book.
I recently heard a TED Radio Hour segment by James Fallon, a neuroscientist at the University of California-Irvine, who has been working with psychopaths, trying to physically differentiate the brain of a killer from that of a nonkiller. He was clued in by his mother that his father's family might have some members who were worth studying. He discovered that there was "a whole lineage of violent people-killers" including a connection of Lizzie Borden, who let it be said was acquitted of killing her parents in a court of law, but who has certainly been convicted in the court of public opinion. In a study he had done on Alzheimer's, he had talked family members into taking a PET scan and contributing a DNA sample, now he began to analyze these for signs of abnormality.
In reviewing the PET scan and genotypes of his close family members including his mother, wife and children, they were perfectly normal. But his own PET scan showed a lack of activity in his orbital cortex, a sign that many neuroscientists would regard as significant in that the orbital cortex is supposed to help to control another part of the brain called the amygdala that is associated with aggression. He also looked at the MAO-A gene in his DNA.
