Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Is this really how I want to live my life?
Each one of us at some point asks this question. The tragedy is not that life is short, but that we often see only in hindsight what really matters.
In what was her first book on life and living, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross joined with David Kessler to guide listeners through the practical and spiritual lessons we need to learn so that we can live life to its fullest in every moment. Many years of working with the dying showed the authors that certain lessons come up over and over again. Some of these lessons are enormously difficult to master but even the attempts to understand them can be deeply rewarding. Here, in 14 accessible chapters, from the "Lesson of Love" to the "Lesson of Happiness", the authors reveal the truth about our fears, our hopes, our relationships, and above all, about the grandness of who we really are.

    I tried . . . but . . .
What disappointed you about Life Lessons?
Okay, this is my second attempt to get through a Kubler-Ross book, I thought with a co-author the book might have a different angle other that the ultimate orientation to Christianity. I got through more than half the book but I used one of the messages in the book and said, "life is too short to waste my time with something I'm not enjoying" so I stopped listening to it. I have no objection to the messages the authors are attempting to convey but its done in such a narrow veil of God and religion that I feel tricked. Plus, whilst the performance is going on, there are no references to back up claims made in the book. I believe that this book and other books like it are valuable to a specific audience and should be labeled as religious books! Audible, you're on notice. . . !
Has Life Lessons turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, this is my field of study.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I don't usually 'love' books actually.
    Any additional comments?
    I'll be returning this one.
    disappointed
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
    I can't even imagine.
Would you ever listen to anything by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and David Kessler again?
I have no problem with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and Gabrielle de Cuir did a fantastic job reading her work. David, however, should not read or write on the subject. His words are littered with cliches and platitudes. Worse, he uses "absolutes" constantly. I had to fast forward to the small sections when Gabrielle was reading Elisabeth's words to find some enjoyment of this work.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I felt like David was preaching at me the entire time - not in a good way.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Frustration and extreme disappointment. I found myself yelling at the car radio as I was driving and listening. David should step outside of his small circle and study some good writers and learn more about how the brain works.
So happy with this choice and have been passing it on
This book along with another book co-authored by David Kessler and Louise Hay, came my way at a time of heart break, pain and grief.

    Publisher's Summary:
Were not supposed to trust others. Look at the headlines. Read the blogs. Study the survey data. It seems that everyone is wary, that everyone is just looking out for themselves. But a sense of social trust and togetherness can be restored.
In The Leap, bestselling author Ulrich Boser shows how the emerging research on trust can improve our lives, rebuild our economy, and strengthen society. As part of this engaging and deeply reported narrative, Boser visits a radio soap opera in Rwanda that aims to restore the countrys broken trust, profiles the man who brought honesty to one of the most corrupt cities in Latin America, and explains how a college dropout managed to con his way into American high society. Boser even goes skydiving to see if the experience will increase his levels of oxytocin, the so-called "trust hormone."
A powerful mix of hard science and compelling storytelling, The Leap explores how we trust, why we trust, and what we can all do to deepen social trust. The audiobook includes insightful policy recommendations along with surprising new data on the state of social trust in America today.

    Title: How We Learn
Subtitle: The Surprising Truth About When, Where, and Why It Happens
    Author: Benedict Carey
    Narrator: Steve Kramer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-09-14
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 482 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of The Power of Habit and Thinking, Fast and Slow comes a practical, playful, and endlessly fascinating guide to what we really know about learning and memory today - and how we can apply it to our own lives.
From an early age, it is drilled into our heads: Restlessness, distraction, and ignorance are the enemies of success. Were told that learning is all self-discipline, that we must confine ourselves to designated study areas, turn off the music, and maintain a strict ritual if we want to ace that test, memorize that presentation, or nail that piano recital.
But what if almost everything we were told about learning is wrong? And what if there was a way to achieve more with less effort?
In How We Learn, award-winning science reporter Benedict Carey sifts through decades of education research and landmark studies to uncover the truth about how our brains absorb and retain information. What he discovers is that, from the moment we are born, we are all learning quickly, efficiently, and automatically; but in our zeal to systematize the process we have ignored valuable, naturally enjoyable learning tools like forgetting, sleeping, and daydreaming. Is a dedicated desk in a quiet room really the best way to study? Can altering your routine improve your recall? Are there times when distraction is good? Is repetition necessary? Carey's search for answers to these questions yields a wealth of strategies that make learning more a part of our everyday lives - and less of a chore. In How We Learn, Benedict Carey shows us how to exploit its quirks to our advantage.
    Members Reviews:
Mostly how we "remember", not how we "learn"
This was a fascinating book. Nicely laid out with complex cognitive systems described clearly. My only issue was that the book is slightly mischaracterized to be about "learning" when most of it is on memory and recall. The author does touch on deeper levels of learning- application, synthesis and making connections. I would have liked more here. Still a really great listen.
really well documented and powerful book!
Would you listen to How We Learn again? Why?
No, because it's informative, I did take notes though! great studying tips!
What other book might you compare How We Learn to and why?
There a lot of books talking about how the brain works... this one FOCUS on studying and remembering and quotes/explains a lot of past experiments
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes, although it got kind of tedious for some moments
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
nop, but it did surprise me some points!
    Any additional comments?
    EXCELLENT RESEARCH
    Interesting & Evidence Supported Perspectives
Benedict Carey offers some interesting insights of the learning process in some non-traditional but evidence supported methods. Even though I have studied learning and educational psychology some, I was not familiar with some of the research Carey offered. Some of the insights helped me to understand a few of the observations I had made in my professional degree program students over the years. Indeed, some of this content will be woven into recommendations for future courses. I rated everything as a 4-star for this book because of tending to be stingy with 5s. If available, 4.5s would have been perfect.

    Publisher's Summary:
God is great-for your mental, physical, and spiritual health. Based on new evidence culled from brain-scan studies and a wide-reaching survey of people's religious and spiritual experiences, neuroscientist Andrew Newberg, MD, and therapist Mark Robert Waldman offer the following breakthrough discoveries: Not only do prayer and spiritual practice reduce stress, but just 12 minutes of meditation per day may slow down the aging process. Contemplating a loving God rather than a punitive God reduces anxiety and depression and increases feelings of security, compassion, and love. Intense prayer and meditation permanently change numerous structures and functions in the brain, altering your values and the way you perceive reality. Both a revelatory work of modern science and a practical guide for listeners to enhance their physical and emotional health, How God Changes Your Brain is a first-of-a-kind book about faith that is as credible as it is inspiring.
    Members Reviews:
    Clear writing and brilliant narration
it makes a complicated topic very accessable and understandable, and it is narrated extremely well
    Very misleading title
This audio book had nothing to do with God. It's only about meditation. The books by dr. Caroline leaf have much more information on how God changes your brain with the new plasticity science mumbo jumbo.
    First half is fascinating
The first 8 chapters are fascinating and bring up some interesting concepts. I give those chapters full 5 stars.
The last half of the book delves into meditation as communication practices. Helpful if you are looking for that but is really a whole different book.
    Mindblown
This book offers a view into the inner workings of your own belief, your own faith, your own relationship with God and your spiritual quest - a view you never could have got if you did not have someone show you the way. If you are aware of the story of the Thread of Ariadne, it is as if the Authors have quietly led you to its end and asked you to pick it up and pull. When you pull, something inside you unravels and you are able to follow that thread to the Center of your belief and then back again. You realize how the whole maze is made, and by whom, and how to enter and exit by your will. This book has led me on quite an interesting path of realizations and education - and I have been doing this whole spiritual quest for seven years now or so. But this book has been a big one. A game changer. "Know Thyself," is the injunction for ages now. You cannot say you do until you confront some of the information in this book. This information may be found in other ways than in this book - you don't have to read it - but I am saying this book presents this information in a way that resounds at the proper place to create Realization. I highly recommend this book to those of you who are ready to Destroy the Temple brick by brick, so that you can rebuild it with your own hands.
Great overview on neuroscience and god
Ch 8 (techniques for a healthy mind) and 11 (compassionate communication) were my favorites ch 1-6 are all research/evidence chapters. If you like the science/evidence part of meditation I suggest Dr Joe Dispenzas books!

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
What really drives success and failure?
Can I trust you? It's the question that strikes at the heart of human existence. Whether we're talking about business partnerships, romantic relationships, child-parent bonds, or the brave new world of virtual interaction, trust, when correctly placed, is what makes our world spin and lives flourish.
Renowned psychologist David DeSteno brings together the latest research from diverse fields, including psychology, economics, biology, and robotics, to create a compelling narrative about the forces that have shaped the human mind's propensities to trust. He shows us how trust influences us at every level, from how we learn, to how we love, to how we spend, to how we take care of our own health and well-being. Using cutting-edge research from his own lab, he also unlocks, for the first time, the cues that allow us to read the trustworthiness of others accurately.
Appealing to fans of Dan Ariely, Dan Gilbert, and David Eaglemen, The Truth About Trust offers a new paradigm that will change not only how you think about trust, but also how you understand, communicate, and make decisions in every area of your life.
    Critic Reviews:
"Smart, fun, and informative, The Truth About Trust describes the most frightening, most wonderful, and most human thing we do: putting our fates in someone else's hands. This one's worth listening to. Trust me." (Daniel Gilbert, Edgar Pierce Professor of Psychology at Harvard and best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness)

A Fairly Good Book On Trust...
for someone who has read nothing on the topic. For anyone familiar with work on trust and morality by writers like Pinker, Wright, and Trivers, you are going to find a lot of familiar road: the Prisoner's Dilemma, computer simulations of moral behavior, the Tit for Tat model of moral behavior. With this book, as with those by the neo-Darwinians, one does get a little tired of the "evolutionary" idea that morality is always on shifting sands, depending on the moment, and that people are always subconsciously, or consciously gauging what they can get away with and only acting morally when there is a chance of getting caught--discounting the very idea that someone could have hard-held moral principles outside of the wager on whether or not he would ever be found out.

An ode to science by making you feel the science
A series of essays that read like an ode to science. Good poetry makes you feel your way to understanding, and these essays let you understand by feeling and just gives enough to whet you curiosity on the topic and give you further ideas for further listening.
This book would make a great first science book for the listener since it covers wide areas of science by making the listener feel the topic but not enough to fully understand or assimilate. As for me, the book makes a great last book in science to listen to because it summarizes superbly the 100 or so science books I've listened to (and reviewed) over the last 3 years. Now, I finally realize it's time for me to move on to other kinds of books to discover about our place in the universe.
One of the narrators of this book, Peter Berkrot, read "Confessions of a Crap Artist". You know it's a great narrator when your mind goes back to something he had read (over six months ago) and you give the narrator that personality he had from the other book. That character in "Crap Artist" makes the truly bizarre the normal, and his reading of the strange in science by making it normal made the listening experience all the more enjoyable.
Great premise, but book really does not deliver
I thought the premise of the book was excellent - ask various luminaries of the academic world about the scientific theory they find to be most beautiful or elegant
    The trouble is
1 ) About 1/3 of the responses are about Darwin's theory of evolution (making it repetitive)
2 ) I found it a bit lacking in genuine insight. Its like asking a load of guitarists what their favourite guitar solo is.... they will all have one, but might not be able to articulate why it affects them so deeply, or where its beauty lies - even thought they know it well. .Thats what I find in this book
Overall it was OK, but fell far short of my expectations!
    Great and full of ideas
This was a great book but Peter Berkrot is not a good narrator for non fiction. He has a snarky Catcher in the Rye type of voice. Emotion and deprecation detracts from discussions of quarks and black holes
At the edge of physics but not biology
Very similar to Brockman's The Universe (one of my favorites). Once again, Brockman gathers all the greats and puts their ideas into one book. There were ~150 essays.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Sane Society is a continuation and extension of the brilliant psychiatric concepts Erich Fromm first formulated in Escape from Freedom; it is also, in many ways, an answer to Freuds Civilization and its Discontents. Fromm examines mans escape into over conformity and the danger of robotism in contemporary industrial society: Modern humanity has, he maintains, been alienated from the world of their own creation. Here Fromm offers a complete and systematic exploration of his humanistic psychoanalysis. In so doing, he counters the profound pessimism for our future that Freud expressed and sets forth the goals of a society in which the emphasis is on each person and on the social measures designed to further function as a responsible individual.

    Stimulating and insightful
A stimulating read which seems more relevant today than in its time. A brilliant analysis of the human experience in modern society. Can't help but wonder what Fromm would think of our post-modern, selfish culture.

    Publisher: Macmillan Audio

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
A groundbreaking argument that perversions are more common than we think, from everyones favorite provocateur.
In his eye-opening new book, Perv, the award-winning columnist and psychologist Jesse Bering argues that we are all sexual deviants on one level or another. As Bering takes us into the lives of a woman who falls madly in love with the Eiffel Tower, a young man addicted to seductive sneezes, and a pair of deeply affectionate identical twins, among others, he challenges us to move beyond our judgments and attitudes toward "deviant" sex and consider the alternative: What would happen if we rise above our fears and revulsions and accepted our true natures?
With his signature wit and irreverent style, Bering pulls back the curtains on the history of perversions, the biological reasons behind our distaste for unusual sexual proclivities, and the latest research on desire. Armed with reason, science, and an insatiable appetite for knowledge, he humanizes deviants while asking some very provocative questions about the nature of hypocrisy, prejudice, and when sexual desire can lead to harm.
A groundbreaking look at our complex relationship with our carnal urges and the ways in which we disguise, deny, and shame the sexual deviant in all of us, Perv brings our hidden desires into the light.

Fun. But, the only tool is a hammer and every problem is a nail
Fun, witty, and a book worth listening to.
The only problem is with some of the science. He's a psychologist and he approaches every idea from that point of view exclusively. No multi-disciplinary approach.
He talks about the human body sexual adaptations. But, leaves out the anthropological differences between how an agrarian culture and a nomadic culture behaves.
He talks about the psychological theories of the nature of trans people. But, he completely leaves out the ton of anatomical medical imaging studies and genetic studies strongly pointing to a physiological/neurological/genetic cause of the condition.
You just can't approach these subjects without acknowledging and actively using other relevant fields of research.
Worth a read. Take with a grain of salt.
Entertaining, cadence a bit tough and very good
Would you consider the audio edition of Perv to be better than the print version?
Probably not. It is read by the author. He is a scientist and rushes through many concepts. It is dense in some sections and light in others. I think it is probably better read than heard.
What other book might you compare Perv to and why?
Not sure there is a comparison. It's is pretty unique.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Generally yes. There were places it felt too quick.
Whats the most interesting tidbit youve picked up from this book?
I found the fact that women's arousal and sexual functioning aren't connected in order to protect their internal organs fascinating. He lays out a variety of paraphelias that I'd never heard of and why we need to be more tolerant of them.

But that's okay, because our delusions keep us sane.
Expanding on this premise, McRaney provides eye-opening analyses of 15 more ways we fool ourselves every day.
