    Author: Roger Schank
    Narrator: Steven A. Berner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-06-13

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
From grade school to graduate school, from the poorest public institutions to the most affluent private ones, our educational system is failing students. In his provocative new book, cognitive scientist and best-selling author Roger Schank argues that class size, lack of parental involvement, and other commonly cited factors have nothing to do with why students are not learning. The culprit is a system of subject-based instruction and the solution is cognitive-based learning. This groundbreaking book defines what it would mean to teach thinking. The time is now for schools to start teaching minds!
    Critic Reviews:
''Professor Roger Schank has long been one of the world's most innovative thinkers about education. This book is the culmination of his lifetime of thinking about teaching and learning. Although I've known Roger for over 20 years, I've learned a lot from this book and I know that you will too.'' (Ray Bareiss, Professor and Director of Educational Programs, Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley)
''Finally, some fresh thinking about teaching and learning. You will come away understanding what's wrong with how we teach today and what an effective pedagogy looks like. If you care about education, you will love love love this book!'' (Elliot Soloway, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, University of Michigan)
"Roger's insights tend to be a decade or two ahead of the insights of others. You can find his insights in current machine translation technologies, recommender systems, game-based learning environments, and even intelligence-gathering systems. The insights in this book are likely to be equally prescient and enduring." (Janet L. Kolodner, Regents' Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology)

    Mixed bag
The 12 cognitive processes introduced in this book were very interesting and may be truly impactful to the way one would/could teach. However I found this book difficult to follow for two major reasons.
First the narration was inconsistent. Most of the time the narrator had great meter. That combined with his vocal qualities made the book an easy listen. However routinely the narrator reverted to reading the text rather than narrating. The effect was the feeling of being read a speech by a student that had not memorized their material. It was only distracting at worst.
Second, and more important, I felt that the author was trying to write two books. The first one being on the 12 cognitive processes - the one I wanted to read, and the second on his opinion of the dominant education processes in the world. Switching between the two lines of thought was a much more jarring process than I would have liked, not added by the inconsistent narration.
I will actually listen to this book again to try to extract the information on the 12 individual processes - because they do seem very valuable. However I do not look forward to winnowing that from the opinion.
    Great Information / Poor Delivery
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this audiobook for teachers who want to improve their teaching and reach more students. The content is relevant at any stage and makes you think about your approach to your students.

    Title: On Looking
Subtitle: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes
    Author: Alexandra Horowitz
    Narrator: Alexandra Horowitz
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-08-13
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 102 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of the number-one New York Times mega-best seller Inside of a Dog comes an equally smart, delightful, and startling exploration of how we perceive and discover our world.
Alexandra Horowitzs brilliant On Looking: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes shows us how to see the spectacle of the ordinary - to practice, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle put it, "the observation of trifles". On Looking is structured around a series of eleven walks the author takes, mostly in her Manhattan neighborhood, with experts on a diverse range of subjects, including an urban sociologist, the well-known artist Maira Kalman, a geologist, a physician, and a sound designer. She also walks with a child and a dog to see the world as they perceive it. What they see, how they see it, and why most of us do not see the same things reveal the startling power of human attention and the cognitive aspects of what it means to be an expert observer.
As the million-plus readers of Inside of a Dog have discovered, Alexandra Horowitz is charmingly adept at explaining the mysteries of human perception. Trained as a cognitive scientist, she discovers a feast of fascinating detail, all explained with her generous humor and self-deprecating tone. On Looking presents the same engaging combination, this time in service to understanding how human beings encounter their daily worlds and one another.
Page by page, Horowitz shows how much more there is to see - if only we would really look. On Looking is nutrition for the considered life, serving as a provocative response to our relentlessly virtual consciousness. So turn off the phone and other electronic devices and be in the real world - where strangers communicate by geometry as they walk toward one another, where sounds reveal shadows, where posture can display humility, and the underside of a leaf unveils a Lilliputian universe - where, indeed, there are worlds within worlds within worlds.
Alexandra Horowitzs On Looking confirms her place as one of todays most illuminating observers of our infinitely complex world.

    Any additional comments?
As a trauma nurse out in Afghanistan, I experienced the death of a friend firsthand. He had passed away on route to our location and so all we could do was prepare his body for his journey home. After this moment, in time, I came to reject all my adolescent views on reality in search of objective truths. Those ideas shared between both science and religion, in order to see how others view the world.
I typed in "looking" on the Audible search engine and found this book. How lucky was I.
There is something about the "ding" moments in life where we put the puzzle pieces together. Only our puzzle is filled with thousands upon thousands of separate bits of information and often looking in the strangest places will reveal this puzzle we call reality. This book shows how others see the world and helps us get into the mind of interesting individuals.
For myself, a much deeper meaning emerges from her words.
There are so many fights between the sciences and religion. While I subscribe more to the former, this book shows how ignorant we are to the majority of the events around us.

    Title: Antifragile
Subtitle: Things That Gain from Disorder
    Author: Nassim Nicholas Taleb
    Narrator: Joe Ochman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-27-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2833 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
From the best-selling author of The Black Swan and one of the foremost thinkers of our time, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a book on how some things actually benefit from disorder.
In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish.
Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner. The antifragile is immune to prediction errors. Why is the city-state better than the nation-state, why is debt bad for you, and why is everything that is both modern and complicated bound to fail? The audiobook spans innovation by trial and error, health, biology, medicine, life decisions, politics, foreign policy, urban planning, war, personal finance, and economic systems. And throughout, in addition to the street wisdom of Fat Tony of Brooklyn, the voices and recipes of ancient wisdom, from Roman, Greek, Semitic, and medieval sources, are heard loud and clear.
Extremely ambitious and multidisciplinary, Antifragile provides a blueprint for how to behave - and thrive - in a world we don't understand, and which is too uncertain for us to even try to understand and predict. Erudite and witty, Talebs message is revolutionary: What is not antifragile will surely perish.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio.
    Critic Reviews:
"[This] is the lesson of Taleb...and also the lesson of our volatile times. There is more courage and heroism in defying the human impulse, in taking the purposeful and painful steps to prepare for the unimaginable." (Malcolm Gladwell, author of
    The Tipping Point)
"[Taleb writes] in a style that owes as much to Stephen Colbert as it does to Michel de Montaigne." (
    The Wall Street Journal)
"The most prophetic voice of all.... [Taleb is] a genuinely significant philosopher...someone who is able to change the way we view the structure of the world through the strength, originality and veracity of his ideas alone." (
    GQ)

big fan but what is up with the bleeps?
    Any additional comments?
Taleb and his "abrasive personality" as another reviewer aptly noted is slightly obnoxious but mostly brilliant...long time fan here. But does anyone know why the book is censored with those horrible bleeps? What does Audible have to say about it? There is really no excuse for it.
Some good ideas, smart guy, not smart as HE thinks
As a longtime reader of Taleb, I find him at best mostly bracing, sometimes head-turning with new twists of ideas, sometimes charmingly abrasive. He can be like a bright, independent-thinking pal to spend a walk with (and I walk with books mostly). This book is worth it on that level. There are important ideas here which the herd misses, probably to its ultimate regret.

    Publisher's Summary:
The eagerly anticipated new book from the author of the best-selling The 48 Laws of Power
What did Charles Darwin, middling schoolboy and underachieving second son, do to become one of the earliest and greatest naturalists the world has known? What were the similar choices made by Mozart and by Caesar Rodriguez, the U.S. Air Force's last ace fighter pilot? In Mastery, Robert Greene's fifth book, he mines the biographies of great historical figures for clues about gaining control over our own lives and destinies. Picking up where The 48 Laws of Power left off, Greene culls years of research and original interviews to blend historical anecdote and psychological insight, distilling the universal ingredients of the world's masters.
Temple Grandin, Martha Graham, Henry Ford, Buckminster Fuller - all have lessons to offer about how the love for doing one thing exceptionally well can lead to mastery. Yet the secret, Greene maintains, is already in our heads. Debunking long-held cultural myths, he demonstrates just how we, as humans, are hardwired for achievement and supremacy. Fans of Greene's earlier work and Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers will eagerly devour this canny and erudite explanation of just what it takes to be great.
    Members Reviews:
    Classic Robert Greene
I haven't listened to or read another author that tries to teach life lessons that are relevant today through historic stories from the past. Is he always successfull? No, not always. Is it entertaining and will you learn some cool stories about great masters of the past (think Mozart, Da Vinci)? Yes!
This book may or may not change your life. The lessons are great and the stories are interesting, however, as with all these self help types of books, you will only see change if you apply it. Fred Sanders does a great job narrating this book (one of the better Narrations I've listed to on a Robert Greene book).
Focus on passion=Less stress and more success
If you could sum up Mastery in three words, what would they be?
    Clarity of purpose
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Being great at something and to truly arrive at being great takes 10,000 hours or more. This is a message that is not being presented in today's age. Students think that they can cheat their way to greatness or be distracted by their phones and think that they can delve deep enough into a subject matter to earn a great job. Shortcuts are preached by many in education and politics. We are not meant to multi-task. Success is not a quick-fix away.
What about Fred Sanderss performance did you like?
Fred Sanders is the best narrator of a Robert Greene book. He tells the stories well and with just enough passion to keep the listener engaged. I wish that the other books were also available unabridged and read by the same performer. The reader of the abridged Power and Seduction books was too smarmy and took away the credibility of the text.
If you could give Mastery a new subtitle, what would it be?
Master your passion, or be mastered by others.
    Any additional comments?
This is a great book and I will read it again. I also purchased the print copy. It is easy to become sidetracked by the media and all of the various forms of entertainment and news that is "so important." Even at work, it is easy to major in the minor things and fall prey to the tyranny of the urgent. This book encourages a person to focus on one thing.

  • The Temperamental Thread: How Genes, Culture, Time and Luck Make Us Who We Are Audiobook by Jerome Kagan

Title: The Temperamental Thread: How Genes, Culture, Time and Luck Make Us Who We Are

    Narrator: Michael Scherer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-18-12
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Temperament is the single most pervasive aspect of us and our fellow human beings. We notice it; we gossip about it; we make judgments based on it; we unconsciously shape our lives around it.
In The Temperamental Thread, developmental psychologist Jerome Kagan draws on decades of research to describe the nature of temperament - the in-born traits that underlie our responses to experience. Along the way he answers such questions as, How does the temperament we are born with affect the rest of our lives? Are we set at birth on an irrevocable path of optimism or pessimism? Must a fussy baby always become an anxious adult?
Kagan paints a picture of temperament as a thread that, when woven with those of life experiences, forms the whole cloth of an individual's personality. He presents solid evidence to show how genes, gender, culture, and chance interact with temperament and influence a mature personality. He explains how temperament sets the stage for the many personality variations that we see all around us.
Research into temperament, powered by the new tools of neuroscience and psychological science, is enriching our understanding of others in every context, from our closest relationships to those in workplaces, schools, and even casual encounters. Jerome Kagan shows us how.
The book is published by DANA Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"In this marvelous book, one of the world's most distinguished psychologists synthesizes cutting-edge research to illuminate how biology and environment jointly shape human psychology. The book reveals deep erudition, yet is written in an engaging and accessible style. Anyone keen to learn what science has revealed about human nature will be captivated." (Richard J. McNally, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, Harvard University, author of
Panic Disorder: A Critical Analysis and
    Remembering Trauma)
"Jerome Kagan, with his usual brilliance, separates the biology and psychology of temperament to unravel the complexity of why we act and react the way we do. If you want to understand why you or your child is anxious, easy-going, a worrier, compulsive, feels guilty or entitled and more, you must read Kagan's discoveries about the brain's role and the factors that influence it." (Susan Newman, Ph.D., Social Psychologist, and author of
Parenting an Only Child: The Joys and Challenges of Raising Your One and Only)
"An excellent read - highly informative and accessible. Jerome Kagan provides a broad overview of the importance of individual differences early in life in the formation of adult personality. The book encompasses the worlds of psychology, genetics, and neuroscience - in a manner that is readily understood to readers of varied backgrounds. In addition, Professor Kagan provides in-depth discussion of the influence of temperament on achievement and psychopathology." (Professor Nathan A. Fox, University of Maryland-College Park)

This book has contributed significantly to my understanding of what makes us who we are.
    disappointing, in the end
I was led to this book I think from a brief review in The New Scientist. I thought more evidence would be presented regarding how specific behaviors found in infants would persist into adulthood, demonstrating the basic thesis that temperament is inborn and cannot be changed.

Title: Psychotherapy Without the Self: A Buddhist Perspective
    Author: Mark Epstein

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-04-12
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 20 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Immersed in Buddhist psychology prior to studying Western psychiatry, Dr. Mark Epstein first viewed Western therapeutic approaches through the lens of the East. This posed something of a challenge. Although both systems promise liberation through self-awareness, the central tenet of Buddha's wisdom is the notion of no-self, while the central focus of Western psychotherapy is the self. This book, which includes writings from the past 25 years, wrestles with the complex relationship between Buddhism and psychotherapy and offers nuanced reflections on therapy, meditation, and psychological and spiritual development.
A best-selling author and popular speaker, Epstein has long been at the forefront of the effort to introduce Buddhist psychology to the West. His unique background enables him to serve as a bridge between the two traditions, which he has found to be more compatible than at first thought. Engaging with the teachings of the Buddha as well as those of Freud and Winnicott, he offers a compelling look at desire, anger, and insight and helps reinterpret the Buddha's Four Noble Truths and central concepts such as egolessness and emptiness in the psychoanalytic language of our time.
The book is published by Yale University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"Required reading for anyone interested in understanding concepts like narcissism, integration, unintegration, and liberation. . . . Highly recommended." (Choice)
"One of the most rewarding books I have read in some time." (The Bloomsbury Review)
"Psychotherapy without the Self has the odd effect of lightness: Burdens long carried seem to drop away as you read." (Los Angeles Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Challenging and Enlightening
True, this is not light listening. Often intellectually dense, it's a collection of articles and essays written over several years, arranged chronologically, and unfortunately the earliest pieces, right at the beginning of the book, are the ones with the most technical language, written for an academic audience before Epstein's writing style had gotten past the doctoral dissertation stage. ***But hang in there!*** As the book progresses, the style lightens up and the concepts get easier to understand.
And what concepts! Epstein is the point man in the investigation of the intersection of Freudian psychotherapy and Buddhist meditative practice. There's just no one else who has thought about the subject so deeply and personally explored it so extensively. And he does it with a deep respect for both perspectives, knocking down many of the myths about both that prevent people from taking advantage of them.
    Some highlights:
Freud recommended a specific listening method for therapists, "evenly suspended attention" essentially the same wide-open, non-judging, non-interpreting approach as mindfulness meditation.

    Publisher's Summary:
Why cant our political leaders work together as threats loom and problems mount? Why do people so readily assume the worst about the motives of their fellow citizens?
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong.
Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right. He blends his own research findings with those of anthropologists, historians, and other psychologists to draw a map of the moral domain, and he explains why conservatives can navigate that map more skillfully than can liberals. He then examines the origins of morality, overturning the view that evolution made us fundamentally selfish creatures.
But rather than arguing that we are innately altruistic, he makes a more subtle claim - that we are fundamentally groupish. It is our groupishness, he explains, that leads to our greatest joys, our religious divisions, and our political affiliations. In a stunning final chapter on ideology and civility, Haidt shows what each side is right about, and why we need the insights of liberals, conservatives, and libertarians to flourish as a nation.
    Critic Reviews:
"Haidt is looking for more than victory. He's looking for wisdom. That's what makes The Righteous Mind well worth reading. a landmark contribution to humanitys understanding of itself. (The New York Times Book Review)

    Publisher's Summary:
Jacques Lacan was one of the most important psychoanalysts ever to have lived. Building upon the work of Sigmund Freud, he sought to refine Freudian insights with the use of linguistics and mathematics, arguing that "the structure of unconscious is like a language." He is widely misunderstood and often unfairly dismissed as impenetrable. In this clear, wide-ranging primer, Lionel Bailly demonstrates how Lacans ideas are still vitally relevant to contemporary issues of mental health treatment. Including coverage of developments in Lacanian psychoanalysis since his death, this is the perfect introduction to the great modern theorist.
    Editorial Reviews:
Presented in two four-hour sections, this audiobook presents theorist Lacan to beginners. Diedre Rubenstein narrates in a sharp, clear voice, reminiscent of a favorite college professor, the one who could keep you on the edge of your chair on a Monday morning.
Often misunderstood, Lacan remains one of the more difficult theorists for people to understand. But rather than read his primary texts, many of which focus on reevaluating the work of Freud, why not listen to Lionel Bailly's accessible interpretation of Lacan's work? This audio is perfect for those without formal training in psychoanalysis, but who wish to get a sense of Lacan's complex and brilliant work.
