Classic

The classic story of Chingachgook and Uncas, Last of the Mohicans brings the story alive, with great narrative, character development and insights - though culturally and time limited - into the relationships between First Nations and the British and French at the time of the French and Indian War. My 9 year old couldn't stop reading. We did a lot of research trying to get a copy that was going to be worthwhile and this exceeded our expectations.

Nice edition for young readers.

Very fine edition for young readers. Very well illustrated in hardbound. No dust jacket but a kid would probably just tear it anyway. All in all a very good way to introduce young readers to this classic.

Classic read

Cooper's tale of 1757 is not only a classic it is also a great description of that period of American history which defined the course of the nation.

I last read "Last of the Mohicans" when I was six years old. I loved it then, and I got to love it again. It is window into a segment of US history that helped define our nation, minus the spin.

This was fascinating to listen to.Set in the early 1900's,Anne Hancock does a fine narration.betsy is an orphan taken in by Aunts.They live in the city.When her aunt becomes ill Betsy ends up on a farm with another family.She experiences new things everyday.I was provided this book free by the author,narrator or publisher.

Like a picnic on a warm spring day

I really enjoyed this book. The descriptions of the countryside and the people who decorated it were warm and fuzzy - in a good way. Yes, it might have been a little predictable and pollyannish but those aren't always bad things. I watch my comfort movies over and over and know they aren't going to change and that's what I like about them. Sometimes I need a little sunshine and 'sometimes things do turn out alright' in my life and this fit the bill. I would say it 'was a simpler time' but I don't know that and suspect every time has its challenges and beauty. It was without cell phones, computers and sports cars and it appealed to my inner tween.

I was gifted this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This was a delightful story. It's a must read for Laura Ingall fans. The author creates such a wonderful setting. Ms. Hancock captures the essence of the setting and characters perfectly. It truly was an enjoyable listening experience.

A wonderful book about an overly protected young girl, that was sent to live with relatives that expected her to be self sufficient. Quite a story for kids to adults, as each age group will find their own meaning.

Nice and clean cut

I absolutely love the voice of the reader. She does a great job interpreting the emotions and the personalities of the characters. The overall story had some great unexpected twists. However, the ending was a little flat. If you want a clean story with early American culture and charm, this is the book for you!

Enchanted describes this read to a "T"

Only Grace Livingston Hill can make a story come to life, in a way that has a kind, gentle way. She always has the Lord Jesus Christ woven within the story. The ending has Christ and His love for all involved as the story concluded that can be applied to everyday life. I do enjoy Ms. Hill's books. You will to especially if you know the Lord Jesus Christ!

'Thou Wast Not Bold! Thou Wast Not True!'

This faithful audio version of Hawthorne's timeless classic is by far the best available; Kate Petrie is an excellent narrator and does admirable justice to the novel's gorgeously wrought prose, somber tone and yet hopeful spirit. My only qualms in recommending it as a 5-star performance across the board are minor quibbles with the production (why does the three-minute introduction come at the END of the book?) and the editing (on at least one occasion, Petrie reads the same line twice), although I must admit these to be very minor flaws indeed in a recording so otherwise seamless as to give the impression that the narrator never ceased reading for one moment to draw a deep breath, much less ever stopped for several minutes together to drink a glass of water or stretch her legs.

The English teacher in me must give one final word of warning to the educated, word-loving listener: Just know in advance that there will be a few mispronunciations of individual words, so you won't be unduly startled and dismayed when you hear them. Some may be British pronunciations, but most are clearly actual errors, often of the sort where a syllable is added or deleted. These errors include "GREE-vee-us"/grievous; "con-TIDJ-you-us"/contiguous; "INK-witty"/iniquity; "Er-RUDE-it"/erudite; "uh-TRIB-yutes"/attributes (as in, the attributes of the wearer of the scarlet letter); "ig-NOM-uh-nee"/ignominy; "miss-CHEE-vee-us"/mischievous; "scorge"/scourge; "PURR-pert"/purport; and, perhaps most dismaying, "DIM-mizz-dale"/Dimmesdale.

But don't let that stop you from using a credit on this gorgeous page-turner.

It also uses the real names of Kerouac's friends instead of the fictional names he later invented for them. A Classic Brought to Life

This edition is as authentic as it gets. The text is exactly what Kerouac first wrote on the legendary single spaced typed scroll. The presentation is excellent, making it easy to follow the story and insights of the author. The clean, straight forward narration style served the content well. Great audio book.

I would compare it to the published version of OTR. I found it very interesting to hear the parts which were edited out and the actual names of the characters.

He did a great job with every character and captured the excitement and momentum of the story. You can tell he loves Kerouac.

What about John Ventimiglias performance did you like?

John Ventimiglia must have listened to the recordings of Kerouac, because he captured Kerouac's voice really well. Kerouac had a funny way of pronouncing words with a double o sound, (doom, gloom) and John nailed it.

Steinbeck always touches the heart, makes you feel

I am at a complete loss trying to explain John Steinbeck to people; trying to explain why exactly I LOVE him so much! His books are astoundingly beautiful pieces of work written with a quiet simplicity that confuses me. I do know one reason -- and maybe that is the whole of it -- that I love his books. He writes about people who are real, and he writes about them with so much detail and reverence. He gives you the hardest aspects of life, settings that are quiet, storylines that are slow and rich, and people who you know. He tells their stories, which are OUR stories. He loves people and allows them to be angry, to grieve, to love. He allows them to be flawed, and to delve into the things that make them unlikable at times. John Steinbeck takes the worst in people and makes you love them for it. So what is it that he does better than almost anyone else? He makes you feel all the feels.

I saw another reviewer say that he had a "heart-seeking missile" and that phrase blew me away because I feel exactly the same.

This book a bit different than some of his better known works, and yet it is also the same. It doesn't really have much of a beginning or an ending. It is a story of the journey, and not the journey on the bus, but the journey of life.

One other thought I have: Often the books that best tell the tale of the journey of life with all its messiness are sweeping, epic tales, which follow the characters throughout life and sometimes follow generations of characters throughout their lives. But Steinbeck accomplishes the same in stories that often occur in tiny moments of time. This book occurs in a day.

Beautifully written

A past era brought to life, narrated excellently... Loved it and I will recommend it.

A Steinbeck masterpiece below the radar

We are always encouraged to read more popular Steinbeck works. The Wayward Bus is an absolute masterpiece. John Steinbeck was brilliant in his telling of the intertwining human struggles. I felt like I was in the cafe and on the bus. Richard Poe is a narrator with very few peers.

Incredibly enjoyable!

A tale of our pains and what's done about it

This is the first I've read Steinbeck. It's a masterfully intricate tale of people, what they feel, and how little they are connected to why they feel it. The characters here represent us well- going about their lives, justifying their actions, and mostly distracting themselves. They wander, starving for genuine belonging, connectedness. But it's they who starve themselves for all their self-defenses, and are unwilling to go through the pain in order to come out on the other side: being healed and whole. They'd rather masquerade that everything is working out just fine than be known, even by themselves.

Weird Cadence

Couldn't get beyond the first chapter. Narrator's voice was great but the cadence of his reading style was very strange and unnatural. Did not sound like he was telling the story so much as just mechanically reading it.

pre-cell phone day kids, gasp!

This was on a list of books my friend challenged me to read. I have been meaning to read Twain for years so this was the kick in the butt I needed. It's a historical classic. I might have enjoyed it more if I had read it instead of listened to it because I couldn't tell if the narrator made the story slower than it needed to be or if it's actually that slow. Either way it is funny to read about kids' adventures in a non-digital era.

awful narrator

this book is required for school, and i was looking for an audiobook because i'm a slow reader with a deadline. but this narrator is horrible. i can't stand the frequent pauses that mean absolutely nothing. they don't emphasize anything and they just take up time. he's hard to understand as well. i am going to keep using this one because i don't want to buy another, but i'm very unhappy with it. i'm glad it was only $0.73.

Alan Munro's reading is absolutely horrible. He puts emphasis on the wrong words, pauses for no reason, couldn't follow the story. Just a waste of money.

I l9ved this BOOK! It reflects all the dreams and limits of the Women Who Stay when perhaps...they should go...

Good story, great reading.

Chopin is classic literature. Her messages still ring true, and this book is a fantastic addition to the canon. I read a short story of hers, "Story of an Hour," but this novel does a much more thorough job exploring those themes. It's also an easy read.

Better than expected

I was surprised given how cheap this is that this seems to be the best recording of this story. In fact, the narrator does quite a good job, a couple of random unusually pronounced words notwithstanding.

I finally read this because it's on all those lists of the top 100 novels. It certainly wouldn't be on my list, but I ultimately came to see why it's so loved, even if I thought the first half was pretty dull.

Amazing reading and writing.

Beautifully read, thoughtfully descriptive story of a domesticated dog that goes on to become powerful husky pack leader. His extremely different lifestyles, from one owner to the next.

Dog lovers....this is IT !!!

As a tame but powerful dog...Buck....adapts to the harsh life of the Alaska gold rush, he learns survival lessons that eclipse the civilized life he led before being dog-napped and sold into dog slavery. He learns that life is a Darwinian struggle in the frozen north, and that it takes both strength and cunning to survive.

If you love dogs, you will love this excellent tale of a dog who adapts, survives, and wins the struggle of life in the harsh, frozen, and heartless frozen North....a dog who eventually wins the love of and the love for a man.

The law of club and fang

My girlfriend lives on Third St. in SF close to where Jack London was born. And recently I've taken a big Bay area interest. This audio book was my introduction to Heinold's Saloon's honored apparition. And if if Buck could choose only one narrator to read his story, my money is on this performance.
