Absolutely the best story!

This story was so incredibly well written. I was hooked...didn't want to stop to sleep. No vulgarities, no crude phrases...just a poignant, well told story. (Hate putting the word 'just' there.)

Even-keeled yet poignant and engaging

It's a book about self-discovery, friendships, romance and motherhood. I loved it. Holly Jacobs is a gifted writer weaving letters and flashbacks into the chapters that culminated into an HEA and yet open-ended enough that the reader could ponder about a next book. Christina's performance complemented the tone of the story. It is not your run of the mill romance novel, worth my time and credit.

Beautifully written

A poignant story about how one birth mother handled her feelings about giving up her child. As an adoptive mom, I was deeply touched by this book and though saddened at the expressions of loss, was relieved to find such a hopeful ending. I used a lot of tissues to get through it but I can highly recommend this story as a wonderfully cathartic experience.

I really LOVED this book. I loved that it followed a group of friends through the good, bad and ugly times. There is so much heart, honesty and truth in the pages of this novel. This is a coming a age story that focuses on a group of friends as time ebbs and flows. I love that there are no loose ends upon finishing the novel and that the novel highlights the ups and downs of family, love, friendship. The story made me both ache for the times of high school and college while simultaneously making me happy those times are long gone. I laughed, cried and felt connected to the characters. I felt a deep sense of wanting things to work out while watching them all make mistakes...both little and big. In the end I felt satisfied that they were all going to be ok...that things would work out. My heart is both a little broken and happy at the same time...but isn't that life?

Brilliant and enthralling

I was absolutely captivated by this novel and did not want it to end. The twists and turns of the plot and the wonderfully drawn characters make for an absolutely enthralling story. Even now, I am still thinking about some of the characters and how their lives intertwined. Kate Atkinson's writing is truly wonderful, her humour, her turns of phrase, all magical. There is nothing better than a novel that stays with you and this one is very firmly in my head. As ever, beautifully read by Susan Jameson.

Great Family Story

A family saga, through the eyes of one child. The story spans the Great War, WWII, the 50's, the 60's and back again. Adultery, broken marriages, and all the rest. It's the story of one family from great Grand Mother to great grand child. The choices we make and their consequences, the mistakes we make and their unexpected outcomes. At times you'll laugh and marvel at the authors power of description and wonderful characters. A good listen very well narrated.

A wonderful evocation of life in the fifties and sixties. Very well read the best I've heard.

Entrancing and compulsive

Love all of her books and this one needed a second reading to get to the bottom of the intricately woven family story with a happy ending! Could not stop listening all night.

A lovely story

Having been born in York in the mid fifty's I felt a real connection with this book, I know the streets and the sights so well - it is poignant and evokes such memories for me. I could listen to it again and again. Beautifully narrated.

Fresh storyline

The writers style is so descriptive that the reader can envision oneself as a participant in the small town saga.

I listened to the audio version which the narrator did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life.

A strange adventure

This book is NOT like the author's usual wild HOT TAKES from his journalism blogging, but the short fiction still has a fine premise with an interesting arc. Like a retelling of "Batteries Not Included," the story concerns a man who fins a mysterious little UFO in his yard. The short little jaunt takes the two through some nifty twists, though it falters a little in an underwhelming ending. Intermittent parts are dragged out a bit by needless description where the author details every distinct moment of an otherwise meaningless sequence. But otherwise there are some nice thoughts and feelings in the story, though it's difficult to peg what exactly the piece is striving to achieve between the silly humor and the somber sadness of its various parts. But part of its enjoyable experience is navigating through those disparate emotions.

Fun read

This was a good story from Drew Magary. I wish it was a full fledged novel. Of course for 99 cents it definitely fit the price.

Looking forward to the next one.

Hmmm, I Wonder What It Was?

Hmmm, I wonder what it was? That was the first question out of my mouth after reading Drew Magary's THE ROVER. An hour later it was the first sentence out of my wife's.

The Rover is a nice easy read. Quick and fast paced. I found it more about emotional connections and relationships and less about aliens and men in black. Great water cooler talk if you have a buddy or significant other who read it too.

What's next?

It was a very odd, nice, and short story. The ending left me wondering "what next?". So, for me, the story was not really finished....if that makes sense. Otherwise, it was a very good story.

Very interesting

Not sure what to make of the ending but it intrigued me throughout . A nice literary ride that I enjoyed a lot.

Fair. Not a repeat for me but first read was good as eve doloreslove it used

Descriptively delicious

The quality of Aston's writing is worth twice the Kindle price. At least The author's descriptive prose reads like butter, especially when her subject is the English countryside. The class thing mystifies me, especially her thankfully rare snob-swipes aimed at Americans; fair enough but still gratuitous even from a mid-20th century perspective. Characters sometimes feel underdeveloped and plot lines a bit forced to me, but maybe that's an American thing.:-)

Good Enough

Last of the series, and while not as good as the previous ones it was definitely worth reading to tie up some loose ends. Although one cannot help but wonder why nobody could figure out how to put the obnoxious brothers out on the street and throw their clothes out after them. And the charm of Elizabeth Aston/Edmondson's writing covers up any plot shortcoming. She will be missed.

This series definitely went downhill.

The last book deals with a poltergeist and there annoying brothers. I wouldn't have bothered with it, but I had purchase the entire series.

I am still wondering over the "English Comedy" indication in all the titles. These books are not funny and only occasionally mildly humorous. I love the British comic sensibility, but it certainly isn't obvious in these books. The author should have stopped after the first four books.

Mountjoys kept me smiling

Loved all the Mountjoy series - quirky humor and fun plot twists, a general acceptance of the foibles and failures of the human race which manifests as a kind of forgiveness. There is enough retribution to satisfy the need for justice as well. I believe I will now read the Darcy series and hopefully spend some more enjoyable and sometimes "laugh out loud" hours.

FANTASTIC

Matthew has done it again! What a fast paced book I was not expecting what the story was about (no spoilers) I love Sean Mangan's narration of his books he does them so well.

What a roller coaster of a ride and a new heroine to boot.

WOW!!!!!!!!

This is the first book I have read from this author, it will not be the last. There is action from go to whoa, I just had to keep listening. From page one I was hooked, and listened far into the night. the action is wild and the timing well done, at times I found myself holding my breath. I noticed that This Narrator is used for all Mathew Reilly's books, which can only make them better, if that is possible. So if you like action and suspense, this is going to be the book to read,.I have since downloaded two more of his books, which I will review when I read them, so go onto the site and start downloading folks.

Too level headed.

The narrator gave such an even keeled performance throughout this book that I think I missed most of the action scenes! I usually really enjoy Matthew Reilly, and I this time I may have to read the paper edition myself to give the book the emphasis it deserves.

Tiresome repetition of "suddenly," "just as"

What disappointed you about The Great Zoo of China?

Apart from the blatant lifting of story lines from Crichton's novels, I found the never-ending cliffhangers very tiresome. Reilly used the overly dramatic transitions too liberally. The overall effect was to make me feel exhausted just listening to it. In addition, this novel - minus the odd "motherf***er" and descriptive violence - was more suited to a younger audience.

What was most disappointing about Matthew Reillys story?

The lack of originality and over-dependence on cliffhangers made Zoo less memorable for me. I've enjoyed all of his other work.

Which character as performed by Sean Mangan was your favorite?

Mangan has a beautiful reading style, but even he couldn't bring life to the trite characterizations.

Obsession does happen to many, but most wake up much younger than this, and at my age Iâm simply annoyed by it. Hoffman writes beautifully of course but Iâm finished with this protagonist.

Even though the main topic is taboo, I was drawn into this story. A. Hoffman always has "magic" in her stories and I think that's why the topic is not as disturbing as it should be. AH never disappoints me.

Return to Home Place

If you've never met the Cazalets, let this be your introduction. And if you have, you'll love returning to Home Place to see them all again. The casting is perfect: every performance was distinctive, powerful, and absolutely top class. It was enjoyable to hear the ever-ladylike Penelope Wilton's narration throughout. It is a bit of a soap opera, of course, and rather melodramatic in parts. (I would have liked deeper characterization in several places). But what a story! It has everything: war, peace, love, desire, denial, regret...all of human life. You won't forget these characters, nor "Home Place" the estate that is, if you will, a character in itself. Highly recommended to those who love a sweeping family saga, and to all who enjoy hearing BBC Radio at its very best.

Better than everyone said it would be

Would you consider the audio edition of Landline to be better than the print version?

I disliked the American voice, just because I think the accent is whiny and irritating when telling a story (sorry!), so that's why I would say the print was better. But on the other hand, the audio gives you the emotions etc.

What other book might you compare Landline to, and why?

A Sophie Kinsella novel.

What about Rebecca Lowmans performance did you like?

As I said, her ability to portray the emotions.

There's a line that Neal said when he was proposing that particularly moved me.

I didn't like the ending - it was all way too left open for my liking. Can we have a sequel please, perhaps focusing on Seth? But it was a really sweet story , not what I was expecting after reading other bad reviews.

finished it in two days although i have an exam tomorrow i just couldn't put this book down! it was so intriguing and it just kept me wanting to listen more. The narration is beautifully done.
