    Publisher's Summary:
At the age of 14, György Köves is plucked from his home in a Jewish section of Budapest and, without any particular malice, placed on a train to Auschwitz. He does not understand the reason for his fate. He doesn't particularly think of himself as Jewish. And his fellow prisoners, who decry his lack of Yiddish, keep telling him, "You are no Jew." In the lowest circle of the Holocaust, György remains an outsider.
The genius of Imre Kertész's unblinking novel lies in its refusal to mitigate the strangeness of its events - not least of which is György's dogmatic insistence on making sense of what he witnesses, or pretending that what he witnesses makes sense. Haunting, evocative, and all the more horrifying for its rigorous avoidance of sentiment, Fatelessness is a masterpiece in the traditions of Primo Levi, Elie Wiesel, and Tadeusz Borowski.

    One step at a time
After György Köves goes through intake processing at Auschwitz, as a prelude to being sent along to Buchenwald, he records the disparate treatments meted out to the two groups into which all arriving Hungarian Jews had been segregated immediately after their release from the railroad cars. Those who were physically fit, like himself, had been sent from the station to the baths, where they had been told to place their clothes on a numbered hook and to remember the number (leading them to believe they would reclaim those clothes after the showers) and where every third prisoner was handed a piece of soap with instructions to share it with two others. Meanwhile, those who were judged unfit for work, including many women and small children, went through much the same procedure: "They too had proceeded from the station to the baths. They too had been informed about the hooks, the numbers, and the washing procedure, just the same as us. * * * Then they too had entered the bathroom itself, with the same pipes and showerheads, so I heard, only out of these came, not water, but gas."
That's one aspect of FATELESSNESS: a prosaic yet detailed and memorable account of the operations of the Nazi concentration/extermination camps, told from the perspective of fourteen-year-old György, who was rounded up during a dragnet conducted in Budapest in the spring of 1944. Another aspect of FATELESSNESS is György's speculations, or reflections, on the perpetrators, the choreographers of the concentration camps. For example, as regards the baths:
"After all, people would have had to meet to discuss this, put their heads together so to say, even if they were not exactly students but mature adults, quite possibly--indeed, in all likelihood--gentlemen in imposing suits, decorations on their chests, cigars in their mouths, presumably all in high command * * *. One of them comes up with the gas, another immediately follows with the bathhouse, a third with the soap, * * * and so on. Some of the ideas may have provoked more prolonged discussion and amendment, whereas others would have been immediately hailed with delight * * *."
Yet a third aspect of the novel concerns the effect of it all on the survivors of the concentration camps. György's thoughts on this subject are somewhat unorthodox, maybe even heretical.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of Brothers and China in Ten Words: this celebrated contemporary classic of Chinese literature was also adapted for film by Zhang Yimou.
This searing novel, originally banned in China but later named one of that nation's most influential books, portrays one man's transformation from the spoiled son of a landlord to a kindhearted peasant. After squandering his family's fortune in gambling dens and brothels, the young, deeply penitent Fugui settles down to do the honest work of a farmer. Forced by the Nationalist Army to leave behind his family, he witnesses the horrors and privations of the Civil War, only to return years later to face a string of hardships brought on by the ravages of the Cultural Revolution. Left with an ox as the companion of his final years, Fugui stands as a model of gritty authenticity, buoyed by his appreciation for life in this narrative of humbling power.
    Critic Reviews:
"This engaging story is one that readers won't soon forget." (Library Journal)

GREAT BOOK! I do not like to read novels
GREAT BOOK! I do not like to read novels, especially when I have to read one novel every 3 days for a class, but To Live was very easy to read and I sacrificed sleep to keep reading it. Wonderfully written with comedic reliefs throughout. Loved the little jabs at communism throughout
One man's hard yet resilient life
Almost unbelievable job of taking the reader into the life of a common man in China when the country was undergoing drastic change. Fugui begins life as a privileged son but his life evolves into one of hardship and sorrow interspersed with tiny drops of hope and joy. The ability of the author to depict the everyday life of the Chinese peasant in the countryside is extraordinary. Despite a different time period, there is some similarity to "The Good Earth" by Pearl Buck, but with Fugui as the narrator the story becomes even more personal.
I must admit I had a bit of trouble getting into the book and felt the wording or phrasing seemed awkward in places. The format of Fugui telling his life story to a man collecting popular folk songs seemed strained. Once into Fugui's story, I was totally immersed into his life. Only once or twice does the listener (the folk song collector) interfere and then it seems so appropriate allowing the reader to see Fugui as another would see him: "the old man's dark face smiling in the sunlight was quite moving. The wrinkles on his face moved about happily." The happiness on Fugui's face tells so much after the reader has heard his life story. In short, this is a look at a man who accepts the life that was handed him; there is no whining, no second guessing, none of our Western world's internal angst and second guessing. It's a good book and one that should be read.
    Worth reading
This book gives a realistic portrayal of life during the establishment of the People's Republic of China, 1950's famine, and the Cultural Revolution. lt shows the unfairness of life for many people during this time. The book shows one man's determination to continue to live in spite of the devastating events that occur to him and his family. Although it is fiction, it is based on facts.

Lost Fortune - a historical western romance.
"What do you do when the world as you know it is ripped from under you, and everything you believed to be true, no longer makes sense?"
Rilla travels across the pond to Boston, the place of her birth. After eight years away, she discovers her very existence has been a lie. The people she thought she knew, and those she loved, had kept secrets and lies that could bring scandal and shame if they are discovered. Everything she holds dear could be taken from her. Making matters worse, she is being hunted by a stranger whose sole purpose is to separate her from her inheritance, leaving her in ruin.
Left with no other choice, Rilla must flee for her very life.
Calvin Dalton has been sent by the Pinkerton Agency to recover a lost fortune. A chance meeting with a beautiful woman on the train into town left him breathless, and unable to get the exotic beauty out of his mind. He is delighted to discover they are staying at the same boardinghouse, even though he knows he has no time to become sweet on the girl. He'd been sent there to do a job, so he'd have to fall in love on his own time. However, when he agreed to take on the job, he had no idea where this journey would lead him, or the lives he'd ruin with his investigation. Calvin's heart and his job were on a collision course of disaster.
What will happen when the mysterious woman he'd met on the train becomes his prime suspect? It appears his heart wasn't the only thing she'd stolen.
Lost Fortune is the first book in Sandra E. Sinclair's unbridled, historical, western romance series - where the females are all strong, capable, and sassy, but most of all - unbridled. If you like escaping into bygone days when the west was wild and women wore big dresses, you will love the Unbridled series.

    Good writing and Good story.
A historical romance in case the cover left any doubts.
Book #1 in The Unbridled Series.
This book has no steam what-so-ever. Its more Good Chemistry. For those of you out there that dont like the sexy stuff but still want to read a romance, this is the book for you. Personally I would of like at least a heated embrace and/or kiss or two. Despite being on the chaste side, it was still a good story.
The story opens with our heroine, Rilla Staab, pondering the parents she barely knows. They sent her to a boarding school in France at the age of 10 and she hasnt seen them since. It is now 8 years later and the only communication she has had with them has been through letters. They were supposed to meet her at the train station, but that never happens. Her parents have met their untimely ends in a carriage accident and their lawyer fills her in on all the things her parents have been keeping secret.
Rillas world is turned upside down, and to add insult to injury, her inheritance comes with stipulations that are made difficult to accomplish because of the secrets her parents kept from her.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Secret Societies, Dramatic Rituals & Mysterious History.
People have been speculating about the Rosicrucians for more than 400 years. Are they a shadowy secret society that controls governments? Do they really possess arcane and powerful knowledge passed down from medieval alchemists? Or from the Ancient Egyptians? Or extra-terrestrials? Or supernatural entities? Find out.
It is fairly well known that there are links between Rosicrucian groups and astrology, the occult, and extra-sensory perception. What is less well known is that there are also links between Rosicrucian groups and black magic, murder, suicide, and even the Nazis.
There are also suggestions that, in addition to known Rosicrucian groups, there are secret Rosicrucian societies, some of which may have existed for many hundreds of years, which have secretly influenced world affairs.
Even now, it is claimed that some books and movies contain hidden Rosicrucian symbols and ideas - Walt Disney, for example, was a Rosicrucian and some people have claimed that Disney films contain such concealed images.
Let's see if we can cut through the myth, misinformation, and outright fabrication to decide just what Rosicrucians are and whether they really are as powerful as is sometimes claimed.
Here is a preview of what's inside:

Excellent book on the history and activities of the Rosicrucians!
An excellent book on the history and activities of the Rosicrucians. The author has done extensive research to bring to light information about this secret society and presents it in a very readable and interesting book. Writing is tight with excellent grammar. A must read for those who study secret societies and very understandable for those new to secret societies or just looking for something new and interesting to read. I did receive a free ARC pdf of this book in exchange for a fair review. Have added to my own Kindle collection.
    Five Stars
    Very informative
    Rosicrucians just crazy!
Underground and secret societies really intrigue me, I've read so many books about different ones but hadn't seen this one which was good. Content was very knowledgeable and well written. Found some things about The Rosicrucians just crazy, how do people do these things? Interesting read.
    Three Stars
It was okay, if you're into that short of thing
Rosicrucians are not an evil society
I found this book to be insightful and not written from a "conspiracy" theory angle which was refreshing given the subject matter.

Amei e adorei . Recomendo muito.

    Publisher's Summary:
A perfect debut novel is like a perfect dress - it's a "must have", and when you "try it on" it fits perfectly. In this richly patterned story of sisterhood, ambition, and reinvention, Sofia Grant has created a story just right for fans of Vintage and The Dress Shop of Dreams.
World War II has ended, and American women are shedding their old clothes for the gorgeous new styles. Voluminous layers of taffeta and tulle, wasp waists, and beautiful color - all so welcome after years of sensible styles and strict rationing.
Jeanne Brink and her sister, Peggy, both had to weather every tragedy the war had to offer - Peggy now a widowed mother, Jeanne without the fiancé she'd counted on, both living with Peggy's mother-in-law in a grim mill town. But despite their gray pasts, they long for a bright future - Jeanne by creating stunning dresses for her clients with the help of her sister Peggy's brilliant sketches.
Together they combine forces to create amazing fashions and a more prosperous life than they'd ever dreamed of before the war. But sisterly love can sometimes turn into sibling jealousy. Always playing second fiddle to her sister, Peggy yearns to make her own mark. But as they soon discover, the future is never without its surprises, ones that have the potential to make - or break - their dreams.

Absolutely recommend it to anyone into sewing
This story, set in the late 40s just after WWII, narrates how many aspects of society changed due to the end of the war. We get the perspective from three different women: Jeanne, her sister Peggy, and Thelma, Peggys mother-in-law. The situation affected them in very different ways. Jeanne lost her fiancee, while Peggy lost her husband, leaving her with a child. Thelma gave them both refuge, since goods are scarce, but the three of them all suffer the consequences of the war. Jeanne works as a seamstress, while Peggy makes the designs on paper. Together they are a good team, but not good enough for the times they lived in.
Something that motivated me to listen to this book is that there is much sewing related. One of my passions is sewing, and I especially like the styles in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. In this book we read about how the clothes industry changed with the war and after it: with fabric rationing came narrower skirts of not more than thirty inches in length, lack of pockets and cuffs and lots of mending. Some years after the war the industry started to slowly pick up and tendencies changed. Christian Diors full and long skirts became popular, and America answered back in its own way, revolutionizing the industry and making it accessible to the public with quality RTW and the use of new fabrics.
This is an engaging story, but I am fully aware that those interested in the fashion industry or just home sewing will be the ones who most rejoice at this one. There are quite some technical words sewing and fabric related, and the beginning of each chapter is dedicated to a specific type of fabric, describing its qualities, uses, and even giving advice to work with it.
Now about the plot. I was quickly absorbed by the story of these three women, which imperfections brought them to life. They felt like real people, with their problems, insecurities, and also successes. Something that bothered me a bit was the constant lack of solidarity among women, the critiques, the envy, the will to destroy each other.

They called themselves the Bombay Buccaneers - and under that flamboyant name they blazed a trail of daring and adventure from the Gulf of Oman to the waters of Macao. For courage, loyalty, and renown few of the Buccaneers could match their Captain, Percival Merewether, a brilliant seaman who was already the hero of a score of fabled sea-faring campaigns. Newly in command of the 36-gun frigate Pitt, Merewether is about to set sail again - this time on a voyage that would plunge him and his crew into new and ever more hazardous trials: a mutiny, a fierce-fought sea battle with the French, and a stormy encounter with the most ferocious pirate ever to hoist a flag: Madame Chin, scourge of the China Seas.

    Riveting
This is the last book in the trilogy. Our protagonist, Captain Percival Mereweather of the British East India Companys Bombay Marine, takes command of the companys ship Pitt. Mereweather quells a mutiny and has to deal with an overbearing first lieutenant. The story covers the Gulf of Aden, Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea. There are, of course, a great variety of pirates such as Arabian, Malay and Chinese along with the French Navys ships to deal with. There is lots of sea action with storms and sea battles.
The book is well written and the plot twists and turns. Meacham has good prose and interesting characters. It is most unfortunate the author died before completing this series. Meacham is a great story teller. I love stories of sailing ships and the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic era.
The book is almost fifteen hours long. Steven Crossley does an excellent job narrating the book. Crossley is an actor and award-winning audiobook narrator.

    Publisher's Summary:
Matthew Bartholomew jumps at the chance to travel to Ely with Brother Michael, as it will give him a unique opportunity to study in the richly stocked library of the Benedictine priory.
Michael has been summoned to the city by his bishop, but it isn't until they arrive that they discover the reason - the bishop has been accused of murder. The charge seems ludicrous, but Michael takes the investigation seriously and energetically sets about his task. Almost immediately he discovers that there appears to have been a series of unexplained deaths in the area.
At the same time, Bartholomew comes across an underground movement of rebellion against the church and the tithes they demand from the laity, and the two men also learn that there has been a spate of burglaries which are being blamed on a band of travellers.
Then a fellow of the priory is murdered almost under their noses. Can this death be connected to the others? Are all the killings linked to the burgeoning rebellion in the city?
Once again Susanna Gregory has created a superbly crafted mystery narrated with wit and style against a perfectly realised period background.
    Members Reviews:
A good listen with nice historical detail
If you could sum up A Summer of Discontent in three words, what would they be?
    Historical + detective = interesting
What did you like best about this story?
The mystery, although slightly predictable, was nevertheless interesting, in some places amusing and the interplay between the two main characters had depth. I feel as if the author has finally got into her stride and, having already listened to the newly published books, this is the first book I can say I thoroughly enjoyed all the way through.
What about David Thorpes performance did you like?
Thorpe does a pretty good job of Bartholomew but has a strange interpretation of some of the other characters, especially female voices and one of the monks who is small in the previous book. Nevertheless, in A Summer of Discontent this is one of Thorpe's better performances.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not a comedy but there were moments between Bartholomew and Michael that did make me laugh, other than that it was an interesting read/listen.
    Any additional comments?
If you have found the earlier books hard to get through then start with this one as both the books and the narrator get significantly better from here on in.
best of the series so far
I really like this series and while admittedly they can be a bit long winded they are well written. some are not as good as others but that is so very subjective but what is undeniable is that the narrator is brilliant so much so i have brought other books simply because he is narrating. would definitely advice reading in order.
    Another medieval murder mystery
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Easy listen, frequent summaries of the plot makes it easy to keep track of what's happening if you get distracted.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I guessed the ending, so many people get killed it isn't too hard to work out.
    Any additional comments?
The Matthew Bartholomew Chronicles are pretty formulaic. Someone gets killed, Matthew and Michael investigate, more people get killed and then Matthew eventually works out who did it.

When Harold Godwinson is crowned king of England in 1066, William of Normandy contests his right to be king because of an oath Harold had earlier sworn to support William's own acquisition of the throne. Henty's treatment of this critical time in history of the English people is even-handed, and his portrayal of Harold Godwinson - a king much neglected in our day - is a sympathetic one. Wulf of Steyning, a young Saxon thane in the service of Earl Harold, accompanies him on his fateful trip to Normandy and takes part in the Welsh wars, the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and the Battle of Hastings. Growing to manhood in such tumultuous times, Wulf's fidelity and honor earn him the respect of all he serves.
