    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of Three Souls comes a vividly imagined and haunting new novel set in early 20th-century Shanghai - a story of friendship, heartbreak, and history that follows a young Eurasian orphan's search for her long-lost mother.
That night I dreamed that I had wandered out to Dragon Springs Road all on my own, when a dreadful knowledge seized me that my mother had gone away, never to return.
Jialing is only seven years old in 1908, when she is abandoned in the courtyard of a once-lavish estate near Shanghai. Jialing is zazhong - Eurasian - and faces a lifetime of contempt from both Chinese and Europeans. Without her mother's protection, she can survive only if the estate's new owners, the Yang family, agree to take her in.
Jialing finds allies in Anjuin, the eldest Yang daughter; and Fox, an animal spirit who has lived in the haunted courtyard for centuries. But Jialing's life as the Yangs' bondservant changes unexpectedly when she befriends a young English girl who then mysteriously vanishes.
Always hopeful of finding her long-lost mother, Jialing grows into womanhood during the tumultuous early years of the Chinese republic, guided by Fox and by her own strength of spirit away from the shadows of her past. But she finds herself drawn into a murder at the periphery of political intrigue, a relationship that jeopardizes her friendship with Anjuin, and a forbidden affair that brings danger to the man she loves.

    Amazing narration
What made the experience of listening to Dragon Springs Road the most enjoyable?
The narration was spot on, and spectacular. I was so enthralled with it I couldn't stop listening to the book even though I'd already read it and knew what was going to happen, but the talent with which it was narrated provided me with different feelings throughout the wonderful storytelling from the author.
    Any additional comments?
Full disclosure - I purchased this audiobook after previously reading the novel purely to support the author. However, the narration that Emily Woo Zeller provided took me deep into the story again, in a different way.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Financier is the first volume of the Trilogy of Desire, which details the early life of Frank Cowperwood, the son of a low-level banker, who realizes his skill at finances and business.
Set in 18th century Philadelphia, the book follows Frank as he amasses a large fortune through stock speculation and purchases of shares in the growing street railway industry. He marries an older woman and has two children and uses his new found wealth to become socially prominent. Things however take a turn for the worst when he has an affair with Aileen Butler, the daughter of a politically prominent Irish industrialist.
It is also discovered that Frank engaged in some legally questionable acts during the period after the great Chicago fire and is abandoned by his political allies. He is further put on trial for larceny and is convicted and serves 13 months in prison before being pardoned. From this low point, he sets about to recoup his lost wealth. Will he be fortunate once more? Or will his fate take him on a different course?

    An American Type
Like Sinclair Lewis, Dreiser was a keen student of American archetypes. In this case, the protagonist is a man whose single-minded pursuit of wealth ends up threatening everything he loves--his friends, his family, and, ironically, the very wealth he has accumulated. The book is also a finely drawn portrait of how corruption operates in the world of politics at the local and state level. In that way, it belongs in the pantheon of great American novels, illustrating the Gilded Age the way Dickens exposed the underbelly of Victorian England.
    Too long
Would not recommend if you are reading for pleasure because it was to drawn out and too much character development that felt like sloughing through mud. And insofar as the financial aspect, it was way to drawn out and confusing to retain your interest. I didn't appreciate Dreisers writing style.
Cuthroat 19th century economics, Dreiser tells all
if you want an indepth story of cuthroat 19th century economics this is a very good read. Very detailed on some of the ecoomic
maneuvers and a decent story parallel. Dreiser is somewhat overlooked as a writer beyond American Tragedy but this work is
very worth reading as some of the tactics in use then seem to be re-emerging today
    Great Read
Rare. Never read a book like this before/ Holds your interest to the very end.
Dreiser, the best of the best.
Dreiser the master writer. Such understanding and empathy of the human character and condition. The writing flows like a river.

    Title: Miss Jane
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Brad Watson

    Language: English
    Release date: 09-26-16
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 53 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Astonishing prose brings to life a forgotten woman and a lost world in a strange and bittersweet Southern pastoral. Since his award-winning debut collection of stories, Last Days of the Dog-Men, Brad Watson has been expanding the literary traditions of the South, in work as melancholy, witty, strange, and lovely as any in America.
Now, drawing on the story of his own great-aunt, Watson explores the life of Miss Jane Chisolm, born in rural, early-20th-century Mississippi with a genital birth defect that would stand in the way of the central "uses" for a woman in that time and place: sex and marriage. From the highly erotic world of nature around her to the hard tactile labor of farm life, from the country doctor who befriends her to the boy who loved but was forced to leave her, Miss Jane Chisolm and her world are anything but barren. The potency and implacable cruelty of nature, as well as its beauty, is a trademark of Watson's fiction.
In Miss Jane, the author brings to life a hard, unromantic past that is tinged with the sadness of unattainable loves, yet shot through with a transcendent beauty. Jane Chisolm's irrepressible vitality and generous spirit give her the strength to live her life as she pleases in spite of the limitations that others, and her own body, would place on her. Free to satisfy only herself, she mesmerizes those around her, exerting an unearthly fascination that lives beyond her still.

    A Love Bird, Simply Superb
"A little girl, I believe," Dr. Thompson pronounced. Brad Watson set the mood perfectly by showing rather than telling about this 1915 baby delivery in a small farmhouse in rural Mississippi. The midwife's "narrowed eyes" as she washed the baby, while the father waited outside with "his long face in half shadow," and mom viewed the baby like she was "some kind of potentially dangerous creature."
The condition of the baby, "Jane" but called "Janie," was medically defined as urogenital sinus anomaly and persistent cloaca. The doctor explained it to her when she was old enough to inquire of him about sex (and her developing crush on a cute young lad), "Everything is kind of tucked up inside you....And one thing you do not have is the little muscle that allows you to control yourself." She and the doctor form a special kind of father-daughter bond throughout the novel.
More than half the book is about Janie growing up on her family's farm in the 1920s into the early 1930s and the Great Depression, with an alcoholic dad and a bitter mother, both parents being "disposed to darkness of spirit," and a sister Grace who starts smoking at 11 and leaves home at 16. Despite nature and nurture dealing her bad hands, she is a sweet girl, always curious about plants and animals and their mating rituals:
"She was fascinated by the mushrooms and their dry or slimy tops and delicate stems and gills beneath their caps. She liked to pop her toes against the ones that burst into orange dust that bloomed in the breezeless air. But it was the quiet, modest ones that were most interesting. If they didn't want you to see them, you would not.

    snowflakes in the wind
I really enjoyed listening to this story. it was a really good story leaving you wanting to hear more of the story to see what happens next.
The queen of historical story telling does it again
Very interesting story I was particularly touched by the parts of the tale set in the Far East. Although I have read lots of books in this era I must admit I haven't read many that explore the role of the Japanese in the Second World War. Informative, shocking yet portrayed in the way that only Rita Bradshaw can, including factual information that is shocking yet compelling. A must listen!
The narration wonderful Janine Birkett is now definitely on my favourite lists, to me the way in which she performs accents, different ages was impeccable I found myself totally wrapped up in the story. First class, amazing 5'stars you won't be disappointed

    Publisher's Summary:
The first book in a new series by the creator of Inspector McLevy.
New Year's Day - and through the misty streets of Victorian Edinburgh, an elegant female figure walks the cobblestones with a certain vengeful purpose. Jean Brash, the mistress of the Just Land, brings her cool intelligence to solving a murder, a murder that took place in her own bawdy house (the best in Edinburgh and her pride and joy). A prominent judge, strangled and left dangling, could bring her whole life to ruin, and she didn't haul herself off the streets, up through low, dirty houses of pleasure and violent vicious men, to let that come to pass.
The search for the killers will take Jean back into her own dark past as she uncovers a web of political and sexual corruption in the high reaches of the Edinburgh establishment. A young boy's death long ago is demanding justice, but as the body count increases, she has little time before a certain Inspector James McLevy comes sniffing round like a wolf on the prowl. Jean may be on the side of natural justice, but is she on the side of the law? Or will the law bring her down?

David Ashton: Great author, bad narrator
I do really love the way David Ashton writes. Excellent descriptions to really get the imagination where it needs to be to see the places and people in the books. I'm usually not one to get hung up on a narrator's quirks but I just couldn't ignore them this time.
Luckily most of the story is read by Siobhan, who is Jean Brash in this book and the McLevy Collection Seris.
After enjoying the McLevy Collection I needed more of my favorite characters.
I just couldn't hear him half the time because he kept whispering. He's great with dialogue but when it comes to reading the action in between I just was so disappointed. Mostly because I know there are more McLevy books and David Ashton reads them!
Well, you can enjoy this book however. Well worth it if your into mystery or Scotland or historical fiction
Jean Brash is a fantastic character!
SIOBHAN REDMOND BRINGS JEAN BRASH TO LIFE!
What made the experience of listening to Mistress of the Just Land the most enjoyable?
There were three reasons why this audio adaptation was so enjoyable. First of all was the performance of Siobhan Redmond (the voice on "Jean Brash" in the BBC Radio 4 series of MCLEVY); as a narrator, she really brings Jean Brash's humor and ferocity of determination to life ... but then she's had many years and twelve series to hone her craft! Secondly, while I might have loved to hear Brian Cox ("McLevy" himself") narrate the parts where McLevy (a supporting character this time) appears, David Ashton narrates it in a way that makes me feel that "Lieutenant Roach" (his role in the series) is telling the story.

    Enjoying
I am really enjoying all the books that I have selected. To hear the audio version is fascinating. They do a good job. I will continue to do all my books this way if I can.
    Great Story!
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fantastic story, and the narration was amazing. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys journeying back in time, learning about what life was like not only for women, but for all in the early 1900's. Great read!
    A 5 Star beautiful book...wish it hadn't ended..
I smiled, I loved & hated characters, I loved the narrators performance..brilliant! I cried many times to the point I stayed up all night to finish this great book! I just wished and wished the last chapter had gone onto another 5 chapters..it was as if this wonderful author..since I am reading & listening to all of the series...didn't want to go into another story line. I can understand it was a long book, but I've listened and read book up to 20 hours for just one book? I am onto number 3 of the series, I wish it was on audible, but overall wonderful, Indian, Scottish, beautiful, love story...please make the last one into listening as well?
    Excellent read.
    Any additional comments?
I listened to all three books in this triology consecutively and they didn't disappoint. I loved the characters and felt I was really engaged with them. The storyline holds its own until the end and certainly doesn't disappoint. I also enjoyed the historical aspect of the story, learning much about India and Indian nations during British occupation. All together, stories that flow well, are totally believable and are character driven.
    really good
Loved everything about this whole experience. don't have much time to read so listened to this driving to work and back. I found the narration very nice to listen to, and became really immersed in the story

    Publisher's Summary:
1862 was the year that the US Civil War underwent a major ramping up. People on both sides of the fight were confused, angry, and hesitant. Most believed the 'war' would have already been over. Very few people realized to what extent the citizenry was being manipulated to participate in the country's most dividing event in its history.
In Longshot in Missouri, we meet Rob Finn - an Irish immigrant farmer living in Wisconsin - and follow him through his introduction to the grueling realities of war within a nation. Rob's unusual talents with a rifle have earned him the nickname of Longshot, together with assignments that take him to various places around the western theatre of the war. It is a physically taxing, emotional journey, on which he is sometimes surprised by the truths he learns while doing his job as a soldier and a spy.
We also meet Allan Pinkerton, thus gaining a little insight into what the beginnings of military intelligence for the United States government was like in its infancy.
Historical characters interact with our fictional hero; actual events are intertwined with the daily lives and conversations of people in those rapidly changing times. Join with Rob as he works to serve and save the things he believes to be of utmost importance, and struggles to sort out those beliefs - the true from the false - in a baffling environment.

    Historical and Appealing
Would you consider the audio edition of Longshot in Missouri to be better than the print version?
I have the Kindle version but haven't yet read the ebook. After this listen I will soon though.
What other book might you compare Longshot in Missouri to and why?
In my strange mind, the movie WITNESS with Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis. A man of the world of violence finds a brief respite in a (in this case, Shaker) simpler, peaceful community. Some readers may not see it, but... there it is.
    Which scene was your favorite?
There are several. The opening sequence where Finn is stalking a Confederate artillery officer to assassinate. The historical interplay between Finn and Allan Pinkerton (a figure I've always be drawn to learn more about). And the historical period of the U.S. Civil War as a backdrop.
If you could rename Longshot in Missouri, what would you call it?
Wish I could come up with something, sorry.
    Any additional comments?
Mention of narrator A.W. Miller is needed . Great job with Irish Scottish accents. There are parts in the audio book going from straight narration to dialogue of various characters that are very well done. He added to the story with his performance.
Thank you for the enjoyable listen.

    Finally a great western!
This book is an example of a nice western that seems to be a long lost art form today. Follow along with the guy they call Longshot as he discovers the horrors of the civil war. The narration was very good and the plot was also equally good.
