With this warning from his grandfather, Kurush, the summer of 1218 in Samarkand begins for young Jalair. He has always been told that Mongols slew his father, Darien--the greatest hawker of the empire--and robbed him of a spectacular breed of hunting bird that Darien had perfected. Since then the Mongols have searched relentlessly for the son of the slain hawker. A broken promise and mysterious circumstances cause Jalair to risk the journey eastward to recapture the Golden Hawks. Striving at all costs to conceal his identity, the boy arrives at Karakorum, the city of Genghis Khan. There he finds not only the Golden Hawks but also a deepening of the mystery surrounding them and his father. Affectionately adopted into a Mongol family, Jalair continues to seek the answers he needs until finally, after treachery on a faraway caravan trail and a desperate struggle to save the last of the Golden Hawks, he finds the truth--in the presence of Genghis Khan himself.

    good story
My teenage daughter was asking for this book. Her teacher read it aloud to the class in school, and she loved it. The old books seem pretty rare, and this reprint is quite expensive (almost $30). So we didn't buy it right away. When her grandma asked what she wanted for Christmas, I suggested this. I enjoyed the story, too.
    Favorte Book
This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I checked it out many many times from the library. I was so happy to finally find a copy. I read it to my kids, they loved the story too.

Richard Sharpe, asked to help an old friend, meets, at last, the greatest enemy.
Five years after the Battle of Waterloo, Sharpe's peaceful retirement in Normandy is shattered. An old friend, Don Blas Vivar, is missing in Chile, reported dead at rebel hands--a report his wife refuses to believe. She appeals to Sharpe to find out the truth.

Soldier, hero, rogue--Sharpe is the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles, whose green jacket he proudly wears.

"Sharpe and his creator are national treasures." (Sunday Telegraph)

"Cornwell's narration is quite masterly and supremely well-researched." (Observer)
"The best battle scenes of any writer I've ever read, past or present. Cornwell really makes history come alive." (George R.R. Martin)

What clever story & a fitting end to Sharpe
Brilliant & clever to again entwine real history with the story of Sharpe. Reading all the books in the right order was a great pleasure & I am looking forward to listen to more of the Bernard Cornwell books. Again the narrator Rupert Farley made the characters come to life with his understanding of the personalities & the clever accents. Fabulous last story & a fitting end for Sharpe, but I will miss him & Harper.
    Cochrane isn't pronounced "Kokrain" Aaaaargh!
Usual Cornwell ripping yarn, good story. Did no one listen to this before publishing though? Elements of the "Scottish" pronounciation are painful.
sharpe 's devil - a devilishly good book
The final story here is good. The voices from the reader are also good but after a whole series the Scottish accent is the same for Scottmen in the series. and if that's my biggest complaint - well that's got to speak for the enjoyment from this and all the sharpe series.

Another great volume in the series
    Any additional comments?
I'm so glad I stumbled across this series. The story is so rich I feel like I'm right there experiencing it along with the characters.
    Great Robin Hood Series
Would you consider the audio edition of The Wolf and the Raven to be better than the print version?
I really like whisper-sync....I can switch between audio and reading with ease. I think this is a personal preference. For me, I loved it.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Obviously Robin was great. I think the character development was great.
What about Nick Ellsworths performance did you like?
I think he did a great narration job.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Most deffinetly
    Any additional comments?
I loved this series. It is no romantic version of Robin Hood, it is bloody and brutal and yet maintains reality. There is great character development and plenty of action scenes. If you like medieval action this is the book for you. If you like historical fiction with action....look no further. Incidentally, I also purchased the Audible edition as well. The narrator did a great job, I listened on my daily commute.
What I really liked was that each book in the series is a complete and independent story. There are hints of more to follow in the sequels, but Steven wraps each book up nicely so that you feel you have finished a great story.
Written so well it makes you mad...
Would you listen to The Wolf and the Raven again? Why?
The author has written this book and series so well that it makes you hate the antagonist and love the protagonist. The way it was written allows you to dive into the story and makes you want to be a part of it as if you are there. When they are running through the trees and are winded, I feel as though I am winded as well. That is great writing and great reading. I love being able to dive into a book like this. The story is fantastic. It has twists and turns and show's what the writer knows and envisions for every character. He truly knows that story, the layout of England where this takes place, the practices that were in place back then and what they did during those times.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Friar Tuck in this one is my favorite. He always uses his head and gives great advice. He is a noble man and is always trying to make others around him better.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When they duel at the end and Robin hears the great news from Friar Tuck and that changes everything that he is fighting for.
Who was the most memorable character of The Wolf and the Raven and why?
    Friar Tuck.

What if you knew the seven most powerful ideas in the world?
For a thousand years rumors spread among the desert peoples that mysterious scrolls containing fantastic secrets had fashioned the Abdali-ud-din into the richest, most powerful trading dynasty in the world. Men would kill for such knowledge. Indeed, they had killed. And then suddenly, the scrolls simply disappeared.
This is the story of the last holder of the scrolls, an old chief named Zafir. Worried that his life was nearly spent, Zafir chose young Bassam to be his heir to the scrolls. Was Bassam ready? To prove the young man Zafir took him on a caravan trek with the intent of teaching him the scrolls. And then, partway into the trip, a startling surprise changed everything.
The scrolls are timeless. Those who come to understand them discover how these simple messages enrich a meaningful life, and disclose the secrets for lasting prosperity.
    Critic Reviews:
Audible Hidden Gem August 2015 (Audible.com)
"Paul Skousen could be described as the Ayn Rand of the desert. He weaves a surprising message into a tapestry of unexpected threads, placing his protagonist in a very different environment than might be anticipated for a story of individual liberty and self-determination. Read it for yourself, give it to your (older) children, better still, give it to your liberal friends; everyone might learn something useful in addition to enjoying a rollicking good story." (Stefan Bartelski, Host of the
    Patriot Come Lately Radio Show)
"Paul Skousen shows us he has the gifts of descriptive metaphors and modifiers of all kinds. He makes Bassam and the Seven Secret Scrolls so interesting, so down to earth, that a book one may never have considered reading becomes one which changes one's soul." (Michael J. Thompson - AML)

I couldn't get out of my car
What made the experience of listening to Bassam and the Seven Secret Scrolls the most enjoyable?
I listen to audiobooks while I drive to and from work. I started listening to this book because the description intrigued me although I am unfamiliar with the authors work in general. My commute is 30 min, one way. After I drove into the parking structure and had to go into work, I couldn't get out. I kept telling myself 5 more minutes, or one more chapter. I stalled for probably 20 minutes. This book was beautiful. It has action, adventure, a love story, beautiful lessons but not in a preachy fashion. It is family friendly and you will not find one part of this book that you would be ashamed to have your children listen in the car with you while you drive around running errands. I will be recommending this to my brother though because I think he and his 9 year old daughter and 8 year old son would love this story. I certainly did!
What did you like best about this story?
The pictures that the authors words paint in my mind. From what i understand, the print edition has illustrations. I will be purchasing that book.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The end. The kite. I won't say anymore as to not ruin the story for anyone. It was beautiful though.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The kite scene. But I would also have to say some of the beginning dialogue between Bassam and Rasha. It is painfully humorous and I really felt for both of them.
    Any additional comments?
These is a book of the old style of books.

    Sharpe at its best
Great story, really well narrated. Can't wait to read the next book by Bernard Cornwell.
    Shape fights for his soldiers.
Sharpe puts his career on the line for his men, and nearly looses everything, but still gets the girl.
    Good book
Remember watching these series as a kid and have subsequently read all the books several times. I love the audio format offered here, definitely adds a depth to the stories and a great way to overcome long stints sitting in traffic!
    Meanwhile, back in England...
If you could sum up Sharpe's Regiment: The Invasion of France, June to November 1813 in three words, what would they be?
    Treacherous, thrilling, triumphant
What did you like best about this story?
A change of scene from Sharpe's adventures in India and Spain, only his second return home in the series if memory serves, which sees Sharpe placed in the unfamiliar territory of Britain's class system and high society (which he experiences from numerous perspectives...)
Have you listened to any of Rupert Farleys other performances? How does this one compare?
Much like his other readings of Sharpe - Farley is excellent. His Sharpe sounds just like Sean Bean, his Harper is cracking, and he has a wide range of other voices which are both convincing in the characters they evoke and consistently deployed across each book - so there is a sense of continuity with characters like Harper, Hagman, Lawford, Nairn, etc..
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was always on Sharpe's side - egging him on to his inevitable victory!
    Any additional comments?
A great book - but best listened to as part of the series. Sharpe always triumphs too, which might not be appealing to everyone - no nadir like that which Jack Aubrey experiences in Patrick O'Brian's novels, but I do not think that detracts from the rip-roaring historical romp (which also gives a real sense of place and time) that is Sharpe's Regiment.
    dull
definitely without doubt the most boring dull book of the Sharpe series
    skip a few chapters

Young Adult Entry Marketed for Adults
I started out really pleased with this book. I usually love hearing about complicated culture clash situations. Then at about the 5 hour point I started to feel really bored and increasingly tired of the flat, mono dynamic and lackluster storytelling. It had become very repetitive and teenager in focus with little to no insight. I mean--after all the main character--the voice of the story is a college student--not in middle schooler.
I thought that maybe I had gotten the genre mixed up--that this was a book from the Juvenile or Young Adult book collection. I checked other reviews over on Amazon. What I found were the tons of 5 star reviews--the same reviews that prompted me to choose the book dominating the review area. When I dug deeper I found many other less favorable reviews that echoed my feelings and concerns.
This book--to me is much more suited to the Young Adult reader. There are so many missed opportunities for character and location development. The whole thing felt superficial and stereotypical. Boring and disappointing. Can't recommend.
    Usually love author read books
Unfortunately, this is a book I think I would have better enjoyed by reading. The author's voice did not match the character I imagined. Still, a very good story!
YA book. Fine for teens but lacking for adults.
YA book. Fine for teens but lacking for adults. Narrator's tone felt much better at 1.25 speed.
    A time filler
I liked the story in part because of the narrator. Some interesting moments of growth in the main character. The story is written from the main characters perspective only. There is no development of other characters.
Some very astute comparisons between the USA and India.
I'm glad I listened to it, glad this was a discount purchase, but in the end I was still waiting for the story to tech a climax.
    Brilliant
A great work of a young learning to love his roots. Stunning descriptions. I felt that I was in India. Highly recommend this book

    Captivating story
If you love period dramas that transport you to another place and time this is definitely a great summer read. Be warned though, not a lot of action or plot happens in the first half of the book however I thoroughly enjoyed the authors depiction of the time and place as well as the exploration of the characters. The characters start out as stereotypes but as we learn more about them they are revealed to have great depth and it was interesting to explore their motivations.
    A good one
I only wish some of the swallowing and saliva gathering of this fabulous reader had been properly edited out. She was wonderful but the sounds were distracting at times.
    Too much noise
It seems the narrator is sucking on lozenges - very distracting. The story is interesting but the noise takes away from it. Best to read this one.
    Overall it was ok.
The narrator has a lovley voice and is a great but I was distracted by constantly hearing her swallow and smack her mouth. I assume this is an editing issue. The story was decent. Between chapters though, there are random descriptions of paitings, I imagine these are in the book....BUT random for an audiobook. I LOVE and appreciate art but this was out of nowhere and for me, disrupts the flow of the book/story.
    Long book!
I did indeed struggle to finish the book. It was somewhat wordy. The narrator however, does a wonderful job of making the book come alive. Unfortunately, the book does ramble a bit and many times I found myself falling asleep on the story.

    It was... OK
    Pros:
The story was compelling. Teenage girl coming of age in an Italian village occupied by the Nazis as WWII draws to its conclusion and she is forced to live with, cook for and take care of Nazis who occupy her home. Her father runs away to join the resistance. She must fend off rapine and crazy Nazis and take care of her younger siblings and, oh yes, she falls in love!
The setting was well drawn. The people of the village were trapped in a situation not of their making with Monte Casino so close by and a major battle of WWII about to unfold.
    Cons:
The narration: Lots of scenery chewing marked by over-the-top breathlessness and refusal to use contractions. And young Dominic sounds like a 45-year-old smoker.
Lots of convenient coincidences: This is OK in moderation, but this novel milks the coincidence to death.
    All in all:
I am not returning it, but I can't recommend this. It's only an OK novel and the audible version leaves a fair amount to be desired.
    Amazing
This was a great story, that touches the heart. Reader does a great job portraying the German soldiers & Italian civilians. We all should go through these stories once n a while, to appreciate what we have & what others went through. Great read!
Great Story of Brave Girl in Italy During WWII
I love historical fiction, and this is the first one for me set in Italy during the second World War. Based on true events, when the Germans invaded Italy and took over the homes of ordinary Italian families, this story of Benedetta, a girl who is caring for her father and younger siblings following the death of her mother, is a tale of horror, devotion, bravery and love.
Very entertaining and informative. A glimpse into
Very entertaining and informative glimpse into the horrors and hardships endured by Italians during World War II through the eyes of a young girl coming of age.
    Bravo!!!
A wonderful and inspiring story! I'll never forget it. As an American of Italian descent and the daughter of a World War II American soldier, I was enthralled by the bravery of Benedetta and her determination to persevere through such perilous times.

    Publisher's Summary:
Dissolution:the first book in the best-selling Shardlake series. It is 1537, a time of revolution that sees the greatest changes in England since 1066.
Henry VIII has proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the Church. The country is waking up to savage new laws, rigged trials and the greatest network of informers ever seen. And under the orders of Thomas Cromwell, a team of commissioners is sent throughout the country to investigate the monasteries.
There can only be one outcome: dissolution. But on the Sussex coast, at the monastery of Scarnsea, events have spiralled out of control. Cromwell's Commissioner, Robin Singleton, has been found dead, his head severed from his body. His horrific murder is accompanied by equally sinister acts of sacrilege.
Matthew Shardlake, lawyer and long-time supporter of Reform, has been sent by Cromwell to uncover the truth behind the dark happenings at Scarnsea. But investigation soon forces Shardlake to question everything that he hears, and everything that he intrinsically believes....

    Time Travellers Beware.....
What made the experience of listening to Dissolution the most enjoyable?
This novel is so well written that you are immediately sucked into the turbulent world of Tudor England and the dissolution of the monasteries. Prior to this I had not read much historical fiction set within this period - preferring true history to fiction - however through the use of Shardlake's role as lawyer and his outsider status derived from his hunch back Sansom is able to present the whole scale of Tudor society rather than focusing solely on the highest classes. Real insight is therefore given into the lives of ordinary people and new perspectives on the upper classes than those shown in the non-fiction I have read.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Shardlake himself I think - despite a tendency to appraise all women as either 'pretty' or 'not-pretty' he is a very human character. His sympathies may sometimes seem a little out of sync with the historical time in which he lives but, by suspending ones disbelief, this only serves to make his character more endearing.
Which character as performed by Steven Crossley was your favourite?
Although yet to appear until later in the series; Barrack (not sure that's spelt correctly - one problem with audio reading) was performed so well by Steven Crossley. Although, speaking of the entire series, I did notice that the narrator changes his style completely by book 4 - so much so I was convinced the novels were no longer being performed by Steven Crossley. I cannot understand why this was done as it interrupted the flow of the series somewhat while I tried to get used to the new character voices.
    Excellent historical & mystery drama
I enjoyed this immensely. The historical background is well drawn and the issues and ideas at stake are dealt with clearly and with suitable accuracy. The writing has just enough idiom from the time to make the narrative convincing, and the performance exploits this to the full. I am no a great fan of Shardlake!
    A compelling story
What did you like most about Dissolution?
I enjoyed the balance of period writing and whodunnit story.
