    Publisher: Penguin Audio

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Charlie Lovett first delighted listeners with his New York Times best-selling debut, The Bookman's Tale. Now, Lovett weaves another brilliantly imagined mystery, this time featuring one of English literature's most popular and beloved authors: Jane Austen.
Book lover and Austen enthusiast Sophie Collingwood has recently taken a job at an antiquarian bookshop in London when two different customers request a copy of the same obscure book: the second edition of Little Book of Allegories by Richard Mansfield. Their queries draw Sophie into a mystery that will cast doubt on the true authorship of Pride and Prejudice - and ultimately threaten Sophie's life.
In a dual narrative that alternates between Sophie's quest to uncover the truth - while choosing between two suitors - and a young Jane Austen's touching friendship with the aging cleric Richard Mansfield, Lovett weaves a romantic, suspenseful, and utterly compelling novel about love in all its forms and the joys of a life lived in books.

    A booklovers book
Translation of my title: if you love everything about reading about people who love books, physically and mentally, you will love this book. If you love Jane Austin you will not be able to put it down.
One story thread is much better than the other
I have mixed feelings about this book. I've enjoyed Charlie Lovett's books before, and his specialty is dual-narrative literary mysteries, so I figured another one would be a good bet.
The older narrative involves Jane Austen and imagines a story about her inspiration to write Pride & Prejudiceor, as it was originally titled, First Impressions. The contemporary story features a young woman named Sophie, a bibliophile with a particular interest in Jane Austen.
Sophie's love of books came about through her relationship with her favorite uncle, Bertram, who lives in London's Maida Vale in a flat filled with his book treasures, most hunted down in old book shops, but a precious shelf coming from an annual choice out of his family's ancestral home.
As a result of a series of shocking events, Sophie pursues an investigation into the history of Pride & Prejudice and its possible relationship with a book written by a clergymana book that two mysterious men have commissioned her to find. In her investigation, she also hopes to involve mysteries involving Uncle Bertram and his library.
As in other Lovett novels, the contemporary story includes a romance element. Those familiar with Jane Austen will note certain resemblances between Sophie's love life and some Austen romances. This is not necessarily a positive for a mystery, since it makes it only too obvious how that plot will play out. Another problem with the contemporary plot thread is that Lovett has Sophie make some stunningly dumb decisions that needlessly put her in danger. I hate it when writers do that.
The Jane Austen plot is more appealing, though it's not very lively if that's what a reader is interested in.
Jayne Entwistle chooses a too-cute voice for the tone of the novel. I've heard her normal speaking voice, which would have been better. Instead, she goes up into a more soprano level and puts an overdone laughing tone into her reading. It isn't terrible, but it is a little bit grating.
well written wonderfully narrated but . .

    Amazing and inspiring true story
I loved this book so much I cannot bring myself to begin another book because nothing else will measure up. I was drawn in from page one and was inspired and entertained to the very end. I have to admit that stories of pioneers heading west are my favorite, especially ifntheybare based on a true story, which this one is. It's a story of true friendship and courage

    Not up to Par
What did you like best about Ramage's Challenge? What did you like least?
This book was full of pointless conversations, and repetitive review of previous events from other books. It was like Pope was simply trying to fill space to complete a books. When reading a series there are always some events and relationships that must be mentioned, but in this book it was over done, with some previous events mentioned two or three times. Also, the conversations between Ramage and his officers and seamen was full of joking, that really lacked the dignity of his position. Overall I have enjoyed this series, but this book was the poorest offering yet.
What about Steven Crossleys performance did you like?
Crossley's performance continued to shine. He cannot be blamed for the lack of substance in the story and plot.

From Paris in the1920s to London after the Blitz, two women find that a secret from their past reverberates through years of joy and sorrow.
As recovery from World War II begins, expatriate American NoraTours travels from her home in southern France to London in search of her missing 16-year-old daughter. There she unexpectedly meets up with an oldacquaintance, famous model-turned-photographer Lee Miller. Neither has emergedfrom the war unscathed. Nora is racked with the fear that her efforts tosurvive under the Vichy regime may have cost her daughter's life. Lee suffersfrom what she witnessed as a war correspondent photographing the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps.
Nora and Lee knew each other in the heady days of late 1920s Paris, when Nora was giddy with love for her childhood sweetheart, Lee became the celebrated mistress of the artist Man Ray, and Lee's magnetic beauty drew them all into the glamorous lives of famous artists and their wealthy patrons.
But Lee fails to realize that her friendship with Nora is even older, that it goes back to their days as children in Poughkeepsie, New York, when a devastating trauma marked Lee forever. Will Nora's reunion with Lee give them achance to forgive past betrayals and break years of silence to forge a meaningful connection as women who have shared the best and the worst that life can offer?
A novel of freedom and frailty, desire and daring, The Beautiful American portrays the extraordinary relationship between two passionate, unconventional women.
    Members Reviews:
    Two Friends
Nora and Lee were once friends while they lived in Poughkeepsie, New York. They both met up again in Paris where there were parties, fun and lots of men. Nora came with her boyfriend, Jamie. but Lee took him away and Nora left Paris. Pablo Picasso found her a home in France, where Nora would find a safe haven to have her baby and raise her. However, at the age of 16, while Nora had to find a way to get herself out of trouble, which took a couple of days, her daughter wasn't at home when she returned.
The book was good but took too long to get to the theme of the story. I was about to quit listening quite often but once I was about three-quarters into the book, I continued to listen until the end. The narrator gave me a problem from the beginning. Kate Reading, the narrator, had what I would call a breathy voice. She kept ending the sentences with that irritating sound that made me want to quit. I think that with a better narrator, the book may have been a better listen.
    Simply wonderful
The Beautiful American was simply wonderful - a great story, well developed characters, masterful narration. I felt like the book had so many themes relevant to all: universal human imperfection, true love and friendship, war and betrayal, kindness and brutality. The story feels authentic, honest, believable, with a very satisfying ending. This one stands out. I was thoroughly engaged, and will be looking for more by Jeanne Mackin.
Felt like I was on the path to nowhere
    Any additional comments?
Since all other reviews are 4 -5 stars I'm guessing maybe reading versus listening is what I did not like about this book. I believe the summation of The Beautiful American is a gross misrepresentation of the plot. I did listen to the entire book with the hope that the story of Nora Tours would go somewhere interesting.

If you could sum up The Temporary Gentleman in three words, what would they be?
    Heartbreaking love story.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Temporary Gentleman?
There are so many memorable moments. The author does such a wonderful job in painting pictures of the characters and Gerard Doyle narration brings them to life so vividly.I would say probably a couple of the most memorable moments would be when Jack first meets his future in-laws.Another would be the scene immediately following the wedding.I believe the one that affected me most though, as the daughter of an alcoholic mother would be when he returned home to find his wife and young daughter outside in the snow.I don't want to say much as I don't want to spoil the story for anyone.
What does Gerard Doyle bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Great Series by the Author of "Ramage"
When reading the Ramage series I came on this offering and had to have them. For folks who only know what TV provides on the origin of the buccaneers of the Caribbean, these books are a super enjoyable learning tool! Be sure to get them in order!
    Excellent Read
A great story very well done.
    Great book!
A truly great read and worth every penny! I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys naval and historical fiction!
good but not as gripping as the lord ramage novels
interesting book but not up to the standards of the lord ramage novels. had a difficult time forcing myself to finish this book. took me almost a week to finish reading unlike my usual 1 day.
    Really bad
Stock characters, stock villains, stilted dialog. The only saving grace is the seminar on the history of Jamaica -- though it is offset by the totally out of place essay on amber-working -- For anyone other than Dudley Pope I would have tossed it aside. Two stars... because Pope has written good stuff.

Having anxiously waited for what seems to be forever, finally more of the House of Niccolo!
Audible, please make the Spring of th Ram (Book 2) and Scales of Gold (Book 4) available as quickly as possible! These books should be savored in the order they were written and as I have read them in the "old-fashioned" way atleast once a year since they were originally released in print.
It is so wonderful to have the books currently available read by such an accomplished narrator. Beautiful inflexion; realistic and measured pace just as I would have imagined Ms. Dunnett to have meant.
So very pleased!! I will keep these books in "My Library" for always!
    brace for hokey accents
I have read these books in print many times, so I already know I love the story. Dunnett wrote rich, complex stories, packed with history and beautifully drawn characters.
It pains me deeply to listen to Christopher Kay, though, and I am very disappointed to see he narrates volumes 5-7 as well. If you don't mind that all but a couple characters have a phony Italian or French accent, you'll probably think it is fine.
Personally, I cringe every time a character opens its mouth. I really want all 8 of these books in audio format, but I'm not sure I can stand 3 more books worth of Kay's narration.
    detestable accents
Would you try another book from Dorothy Dunnett and/or Christopher Kay?
I may not make it through this one, although the story is great. The accents that the narrator affects are so irritating that it is almost unbearable. It's just silly for everyone but Nicolas to have an accent. Never again will I choose a book read by Christopher Kay!
How could the performance have been better?
    No ridiculous accents!
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    yes
Ruined by the reader's ridiculous accents
Thomas is English but the reader gives him a French accent. Nicholas and Primaflora have the same background and mother tongue, but the reader has Nicholas unaccented while she speaks with a French accent. Nicholas, Katelina and Gelis all spent a large portion of their childhoods in Bruges, but Nicholas is again unaccented while they have accents when they all speak Flemish. The accents are inconsistent. They separate us from nuanced inflections and GET IN THE WAY. Who chose this reader? Who produced this sad excuse for an interpretation of a book filled with skilled polyglots? LOSE THE ACCENTS. REPLACE THIS PRODUCTION. What a disappointment.
    NARRATOR CHANGE, FML
UGH. They changed narrators. This voice actor insists on attempting all the accents.

The future of Britain is at stake. In the turbulent times of the Dark Ages, the despotic Uther Pendragon, High King of Celtic Britain, is nearing death, and his kingdom is being torn apart by the squabbling of minor kings. But only one man can bring the Celts together as a nation and restore peace - King Arthur. Artorex (Arthur) doesn't yet seem like the great man he will grow into. We meet him as a shy, subservient twelve-year-old living in the foster home of Lord Ector, who took in Artorex as a babe to protect him from murderous kin. Life has been unremarkable for the lad within the bosom of Ector's family. That is, until the arrival of three influential men who arrange for Arthur to be taught the martial skills of the warrior: blade and shield, horse and fire, pain and bravery. Little does Artorex know that these three men - one of whom is Merlin - secretly hope that one day he will take Uther's crown and restore peace to Britain. As the years pass, Artorex becomes a war chieftain, wins many battles, and starts a family with a beautiful, strong woman. But if he is to fulfill his destiny and become the High King of the Britons, Artorex must find the dying king's hidden crown and sword. Will Artorex be able to leave his family, find the precious weapons, lead the attack against the Saxons, and ultimately prove himself worthy of Uther's crown?

A Dry, Dull Tale, Marred in "Realism"
Boy, I really mis-judged the synopsis on this. So this drastically different re-telling of the King Arthur legend is much like the 2003 Movie "Arthur" with Clive Owen. It takes a very historic approach to the legend. This method never made much sense to me. King Arthur and the legend, we all know many times over never exists. So applying a historically accurate wrapper on it, creates a very dry, dull novel that uses vague names of the characters that we know. Arthur is Artirex, Kay is Kayus, Merlin is Myrddion Merlinus apparently. These names given to the characters come off as a very false and artificial way of applying a more "historic" and Roman theme to the story.
The author really tries to add the history of Rome and Brittany to the story, involving the earlier tribes of Brits, celts, jutes etc... While I appreciate the effort, and it's a good idea, I wish it would have been introduced much later. The story itself just comes off as brash, abrasively raw, and it seems like it's trying **too** hard to be accurate.
Following this theme of realism, characters are given more human flaws, including things like pedophila, rape, and torture.
In the Once and Future King, Arthur's first quest involves stealing into Morgan's candy lair, and slaying a Griffon.
(I'm going to refer to The Once and Future King as TOAFK from here on out)
In this dystopian re-imagining, Arthur's first "quest" involves stealing into a secret torture chamber set up to capture and rape little boys, while others are forced to watch.
    See the difference here?
The book itself is written with mediocrity. No characters I really even care for. I think I can attribute this to the stark differences from the original Arthurian legends. Arterex is wed to someone early on, Kayus is a wife beater, and a masochist...

An underappreciated entry to the series
Over the many times that I have read this series, this particular entry has never really stayed with me, or honestly, seemed all that interesting. This book focuses on Lymond and his time in Russia. There is very little of his family here. I think that's why I always felt that the series could have gone without it.
However, now, having listened to it, narrated perfectly by Andrew Napier, I feel differently. This story is crucial in the development of the man Lymond is to become. As always, he tends to extremes, and nearly destroys himself in the process - a man burning so brightly in his talents that he nearly incinerates himself. But the progression is fascinating, from his confidence in his abilities, and his choice to ignore the weaknesses.
Also, in this book, Philippa grows and develops into an amazing character. Her time at the English Court of Queen Mary, and the people she meets and the things she learns make her into a formidable character.
This book may seem quiet, and a placeholder, but it is important in the development of the characters, and although many of the supporting characters play no role here, the story is rich and as much of a banquet for the reader as the others. And as always, the humor is there, and the rollicking scene in the revels with all the 'Ls', is the best yet. "Gentleman, please!" Lymond is at his best here.
Don't skip this book or think of it as unimportant. It's as rich as the others, and although a placeholder to allow time to move on and the characters to grow up, it's as rewarding as all of the others.
The use of language, to spin a tail is amazing!
love these stories so much, I find TV so insulting to the mind these days, Dorothy ' ability to tell these stories keeps them on my mind though my day, with the story telling from my phone where ever I go!

Tale of historical murder and unexpected love
This story gives us a different view of what might have taken place in Canterbury when Thomas Becket was murdered. Sir Benedict Palmer is a mercenary who is trying to raise himself out of the poverty he has always lived in. He goes on a mission that will indeed give him a great purse with which to give him the life he thinks he wants. The mission is with 4 other knights and concerns the arrest of Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket. King Henry has had a disagreement with him and many in England consider Becket a traitor because of it. The arrest turns into murder and is witnessed by Theodisia, a young nun. She is then kidnaped by the knights. As it turns out though there is much more to her than Palmer thinks and she was not accidentally taken. She is not just a nun. It quickly becomes apparent that once they get to the castle of one of the four knights she will most likely not survive. Palmer is her only hope.
Her faith is all she has known since she was very young and she struggles with being out in the world as she had expected never to do so. She was to be the Anchoress of Canterbury. Palmer carries her on his horse for the journey to the castle and they begin to develop a relationship along the way. Since she never expected to be with a man as other women are she is unprepared for the feelings she is beginning to have. A real struggle rages inside of her. Their feelings for each other develop slowly but are handled very well. There are several twists and turns and of course some ups and downs. The Fifth Knight is not who you think it is. That really did surprise me but fit just perfectly into the storyline.
James Langton did a really good job or narrating the book. His voices were a very good mixture and easy to identify the characters. The women's voices were well done also. I felt like he had a real feeling for the characters and was not just reading them like some do. I will look for more from him.
The book is 11 1/2 hours but so worth your time. Don't hesitate to buy this one.
I wanted to kill the heroine myself
It has been along time since I have encountered such an annoying, self righteous, prig of a heroine as Theodosia. I don't care if she is a nun/anchoress. If I had been Sir Palmer, I would have left her to the bad guys to steam alive. I am half way through and don't know if I can finish. I might throw my Kindle against the wall soon.
    entertaining
I look forward to reading the sequel. The.
