LIVING SPACE

THE LATE SHIFT

These stories are very professionally done. The music and sound effects are perfect. I might mention that there are a few pregnant pauses, which made me wonder if it had stopped. The list of stories is almost correct. Instead of A Heated Premonition, the story is Living Space by the same author, M.J. Elliot. I don't know about the story that was listed, but Living Space was a very good story. I liked all the stories. None of them are very scary. Most of them end in a twist. Since I knew they were going to end in a twist, I guessed most of them before they happened.

A FUNGUS AMONG US

My favorite was the first story The Late Shift, I would give it an A-. A Fungus Among Us, Wolf, and Living Space I would give B+'s. Reincarnate a B- and A Good Head On His Shoulders a C.

I feel that these stories are entertaining and the price is right.

Terrific! If you like horror, you want these!

These are simply great. Fangoria has given us lean and mean horror that gives you everything you want in intensity, curious twists, and spine-tingles. The performance is first rate and the stories range from classic feels with contemporary edges to unique and fresh ideas. I would eagerly buy ten more volumes at twice the price.

Hit and miss with the stories but still good.

The stories aren't all winners. Some are cheesy or downright lame although its still entertaining.

Good read, despite, not because of sci fi twist

I never fully settled into this book because I was looking forward to a 'cold crime mystery' read, not a detour into the twilight zone. That said, the writer is clearly talented and while the sci fi angle never quite gelled for me, I was entertained and would try another of the authors efforts.

Too much work.

This was a very convoluted book which may have been easier to follow in print.

Through NO fault of the narrator--he was excellent--it was often difficult for me to understand immediately in which time period the story was taking place. There were flashbacks and changes in POV and time travel and an evil cat. There were different versions of the same character. Alternate universes.

Those with weak stomachs be aware that several descrptions of bodily functions were a bit too graphic and detailed.

Disappointing Zombie Fare

The best thing about this book was the narrator's valiant attempt to turn this dry material into something emotional. It was a good performance of average material.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story is way too short and if you come to this after reading Max Brooks' World War Z, you'll be disappointed by the lack of differing perspectives on the zombie crisis.

Pass this one by. I bought it because the author had a good interview on the Monster Talk podcast, but his description of the book was more interesting than the reality of it.

Great book, mediocre performance

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This is one of my favorite books. Every time I read it, and I've read it at least half a dozen times, I find something new to admire. So maybe you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that Mystery had been made into an Audible book. What you won't be able to imagine is my disappointment with the reader. Except for a single sentence at the end, he lacked all modulation, all nuance. What he had in abundance, regrettably, was zeal, and this he brought to bear on each page, each paragraph, each sentence (except one). What a disappointment.

Straub Does It Again

Another good mystery by Peter Straub. There are some interesting social/economical conflicts played out in the story as well as the unraveling of some family secrets including murder.

Too bored to finish this book, I could care less about a boy and his criminal investigator mentor. Progresses very slowly too, and the author fails to create any emotional attachment to the main character. Narrator is also a bit too zealous for my listening preference.

Excellent Book!

I had read this book years ago and remember liking it, but I had forgotten so much of the story it was like reading it for the first time. 25 years on, it is an amazing read. Compelling from the first page and full of great characters. I especially liked the second act which takes place at an exclusive lake resort in Wisconsin. The conclusion wraps up every character arc neatly and is very satisfying.

Throw the plot out the window, this is all about the action. It is non stop. If you just want to hear about gross, gory stuff and not complicate it with a plot, than this is your book.

When the nurse was cornered in the closet with the children trying to keep the draculas from getting in and turning anymore of the children...

Nurse Jenny was my favorite.

If you could take any character from Draculas out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would have to say nurse Jenny because even though Dr. Lance was an ass she still maintained a gentle and lovable character.

The book was outstanding! I was not bored at any point! LOVED IT!!

Exactly what I expected

This one included every cliche known to horror/apocalytic novels and lots of gore but it was kind of a guilty pleasure for me. The narrator was excellent..some of his 'woman voices' made me want to grit my teeth for just a moment but he captured the over the top cowboy cop and the lumberjack characters really well and showed great talent in keeping the story moving. I just wish he'd done a few less 'squeeeak, squeeeak, squeeeeaks' in some places..kind of painful when you're wearing earbuds!

Could have been so much better.

Let me start by saying that this book was NOT a waste of my time. It entertained me and kept my attention on a long drive, and sometimes that's as much as you can ask from a book. It's action-packed from the start, with some fun new twists on the vampire legend.

Some stories are great others not so much.

The stories in this collection are all quite different in nature. As a consequence, some will appeal more than others depending on one's taste. Whilst I would have given 4-5 stars to the stories by Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe, some of the others I found quite boring and unengaging, hence an overall score of 3. The narrators all do a great job.

A really nice mix of gothic and ghosts

Would you consider the audio edition of Great Classic Ghost Stories to be better than the print version?

I'm fairly certain that I enjoyed this more as an audiobook than I would have as a print experience.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Great Classic Ghost Stories?

This is hard to answer without ruining the suspense for other listeners. Sufficeth to say, I really enjoyed an elderly aunt drafting her nephew to escort her to a reputedly-haunted house.

What does John Lee and Bronson Pinchot bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

They both imbue the tales with tremendous atmosphere. Even though the stories are in prose considered elevated by contemporary standards the narrators give a radio play sense of dynamism.

While on topic of narrators, it bears mentioning that the woman (Jennifer James-Something) also does a very fine job. Instead of "various narrators" the cover art for this volume should list the cast. I didn't know what great talent was on board until I started to listen.

Who was the most memorable character of Great Classic Ghost Stories and why?

Again, I don't want to produce spoilers. I will remember George and his dreams, though.

Any additional comments?

It's a bit misleading to title this a volume of ghost stories. There are ghosts but also gothic tales and a bit of fantasia, or modern fairy tale, as well. Had I known that I might have bought it sooner.

Theres nothing to replace the old fashioned ghost story is there?

Well there really nothing that will ever replace a well told ghost story from the last century and this book though short has them all. Some of the best writers in their field with some old favourites such as The Signalman with some I hadnt heard before and all perfectly well told.

Excellent, but.....

A very well written story for someone new to this zombie genre it is perfect. To the seasoned Zombie reader you will find the pace a bit slow and drawn out. Is it worth the credit , sure but you've been warned :)

Very shallow - feels like reading a video game

I was very disappointed, and about 2/3 of the way through decided it wasn't worth my time to finish it...better things out there to listen to. There is just no depth to the story. Also, I was expecting an interesting weather-disaster story up front, but there is barely a mention of the 5 hurricanes and none of the action even takes place in Houston. The story starts with some zombies fighting a cop in front of a house in San Antonio and goes downhill from there. This very much felt like reading a zombie video game.

Ok but I've listened to better.

Would you try another book from Joe McKinney and/or Michael Kramer?

This was an ok zombie novel. I kind of nodded off in a couple of spots. It had its great thriller spots and then started going off in to left field for a moment or two.

I have had quite a few cop friends and you could tell this was written by a police officer. Everyone is out to get the main character or he thought that was the case. Granted during this time of crisis you would only try to trust a select few but to me in an end of times scenerio I would want some one watching my back.

I'm going to listen to Apocalypse of the Dead (the next novel) and give this author another shot. Hopefully he will earn another star or two from me.

The reader was terrible and the story wa borig. Hard to do with a zombie story. This book never connected with me on any level. Sorry to say it was a waste of time.

Good readWith the zombie craze in full swing I found this book entertaining but a little redundant. It was a bit slow to start and then seemed to switch gears and even seemed like a different author had written the last half of the book, but it a good way, both halves were good. The ending took me by surprise it seemed to just end and I feel a little more time could have been taken in it, but it would have had to be considerably longer to continue at the pace he was going. All in all I was satisfied

GREAT story, HORRIBLE music!

IMPORTANT-- This would be 4.5 stars IF it didn't have the HORRIBLE, LOUD, STARTLING music every 15 minutes, interrupting the story. The narrator is good enough. The story is VERY cool, especially for how old it is. But, seriously, the music will come out of nowhere and scare the CRAP out of you!!

Starts strong but goes downhill

Would you try another book from Howard Phillip Lovecraft and/or Felbrigg Napoleon Herriot?

Possibly. This is the second Lovecraft book I've tried and while the stories show great promise with their ideas, the actual telling of them makes them fall short of the mark. Lovecraft uses seven words, when two will do. This makes for an extremely frustrating listen as I wanted him to do was get to the damned point and go on with the story. The look started out strong. The plot moved forward at a nice pace and had me glued. However when Dyer and Danforth start their exploration of the lost city, the pace grinds to a crawl as Lovecraft tells us the history of the Elder Ones and the Shoggoths. While this information is welcome and necessary, it goes on for ages. The whole second third of the book focuses on this and there are whole chapters that consist of Dyer musing on these facts as he and Danforth move from room to room. By the time the book approached the end, I just wanted it to be over.

What was one of the most memorable moments of At the Mountains of Madness?

The discovery of the Elder Ones and the mystery surrounding them. I particularly enjoyed the sense of foreshadowing they gave as the dogs couldn't stand to be near them. You knew something was going t go terribly wrong.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Felbrigg Napoleon Herriot?

Maybe. I found Herriot to be very underwhelming. Perhaps this is due to the way the book was written. But there was hardly any emotion to his performance.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Most definitely. Guillermo del Toro has been trying to make this movie for over a decade. I firmly believe that it would be far more entertaining as a movie, and if del Toro made it, you could be assured of brilliant creature design and effects. He also knows how to create that sense of the weird and disturbing.

Any additional comments?

I would have liked to hear more of the monstrous beings in the higher mountain range that even the Elder Ones were afraid of. The mystery surrounding these hardly-mentioned horrors intrigued me greatly.

This is the genisis of all those stories like The Thing, Alien vs Preditor. There is nothing like discovering where all the great sc-fi horror has come from.
