Disappointing

Based on Robin Sloan's review I had great expectations.

Characters are poorly developed, writing poor quality, and plot fairly absurd.

Show, don't tell.

And give characters consistent personality traits.

I found myself rolling my eyes at the protagonist's actions.

Interesting info about the artist Duchamp was the only thing that kept me listening.

You're going to hear great things about this book

You're going to hear great things about this book...and they'll be mostly true. It's a great debut novel, that suitably weaved fiction with fact and perhaps a little fantasy too. This story includes robbery, murder, kidnapping, art, drugs, more murder, romance, and did I say murder? It was an enjoyable read. I would have given it 5 stars had the ending been more to the point. There was a moment when the dialogue suggested the big reveal, but it was only partial...only to continue to read on, for another big reveal with a different character.

The Readymade Thief

This novel is original. It is sectioned off into different "books" which makes sense since there seems to be several smaller stories inside the larger story. The art / science undertones lost me at some points as the author weaves an intricate story about a secret society tied to an artist's work. The characters are believable and the narrator does an excellent job of portraying each of them. It's a long, detailed mystery but worth the listen.

Long-winded but art historical

It took me a while to get through this book.

What does Greg Wagland and Stephanie Racine bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

The performances of both speakers was excellent. They really helped encapsulate the world of the posh and wealthy.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The internal struggle of Martin and his need to fit in, to be part of this wealthy lifestyle and ultimately to be loved by the man he had worshiped since school is really moving.

Any additional comments?

A great listen, Elizabeth Day is a is fantastic writer. The book is dark, witty and exciting.

Some of the laziest writing I've ever read

This shamelessly derivative, cliched story had nothing - repetitive and boring, the plot was too illogically planned out to make for a believable climax and every character was completely one-dimensional in really stereotyped, unrealistically exaggerated caricatures.

A depressing read

Good grief, what a depressing read. I selected this book to listen while nursing a particularly bad head cold. Having listened to and enjoyed the softness of Eventide, I hoped the book would be in a similar vein - what a disappointment. Gloomy, glum, black. I gave up - it was making my head cold even worse

A rather juvenile romp

As the title suggests, Elif Batuman's novel explores linguistics and Russian literature through the eyes of a young Harvard undergraduate, Selin. The character falls in love with an older, neurotic Hungarian mathematics student, and travels to his country to be near him. It is occasionally humorous, and describes a rite of passage - but no more than that. Unfortunately, at times it is rather banal and tedious.

While Batuman's writing is to be desired, the content fell short as the narrative varies between sharp and rambling. The naivety of Selin also appears slightly unbelievable, and would probably be better geared at a younger audience.

Falls flat

The narration is a bit dry making it hard to know if things are meant to be funny or not. I downloaded it as it was the "editors pick" and it turned out to be a struggle to finish.

An incredible journey

An incredible journey. I agree so much with the comment I read before purchasing, of this story being one of a 'warm hug'. Just gorgeous, I found myself completely invested. The only downfall of the book was it coming to an end... I wish it could have kept the same detail and not finished so quickly!

A fabulous depiction of shame and despair captured in a modern mythological drama, Salman Rushdie teases, captures, and satisfies his readers interest. The combination of history, metaphysics, and prose uniquely elevate the quality of literature Rushdie can produce and this is but one example of that. Also recommended to read, "Midnights Children".

Out of the Comfort Zone

There are many terrific writers like Melanie Finn but too few get the attention they deserve or find their audience. Two Dollar Radio, with the tagline Books too loud to Ignore, published The Gloaming, a small mystery with a big heart and an intimate glimpse of both insiders and outsiders from Switzerland to Africa. The oddly and appropriately named Pilgrim Jones has been abandoned by her husband for another woman, while traveling in Switzerland. To add insult to injury, she is subsequently involved in the death of three children, but she has no recollection of the accident nor does she fully comprehend the consequences. In despair over her own life, her unborn children and the victims, everything seems more oppressive, more furtive and mysterious, and in this, Finn is especially good at evoking the scene. She writes frequently about the play of light and dark, and the similarly conflict between people, slowly establishing a powerful sense of place as well as the flaws, and flightiness, of humans outside their comfort zones. Pilgrim takes off impulsively, and remains, in a small town in Tanzania, where she becomes embroiled in all sorts of personal mysteries, until she disappears, and the people in her midst take up the story. With subtle but steadily increasing tension, the narrative shifts time and place and voice, but the story remains cohesive, if you read carefully, and make sure to read every word, as this Kenyan-born American writer is one to watch [this is only her second novel]. Even when she slips into the abstract, or especially then, her descriptive language is a delight for the literary reader.

Riveting

It's been a while since I read a book I couldn't put down. I'm not always a fan of books that jump back and forth from one place and character to another. But this one clicked. Finn's portrait of Tanzania and its people seemed quite authentic; it was obvious she had spent time there. The plot kept you interested, and the characters were all damaged, some more than others. Finn managed to portray nearly all sympathetically and the major ones all managed to redeem themselves. The main problem I had was with the ending, which, while I won't spoil it, was abrupt and left you wanting. As the one character puts it, "it doesn't have a good ending."

Extraordinary ability with language. Mysterious and beautiful.

What a gorgeous writer Melanie Finn is, what an extraordinary ability with language she has. Rarely do I give a book 5 stars (I've been accused on here of being a 'tough grader,' and I am) but this writing deserves every star. Finn is elegant, attuned, graceful, clinically harsh when she needs to be. Descriptions do not spare an extra word; they are perfect in their simplicity, sometimes deeply painful, hugely evocative.

European Writing at its Finest

There are enough well written reviews here to convince readers of the late Sebald's beauty, lyricism, and dream-like lure as a writer. Austerlitz is in my opinion his most beautiful and profound book, though I've yet to read Vertigo. Simply stated, it's his labour of love, and you will come away from the book an altogether different reader and observer. If you're a diarist or a writer of any sort, I promise you will close this book and return to page one and begin again. His long, beautiful sentences will remind readers of Europeans' old-world sensibility; their sense of history and time and of those who have come before us.

Disappointment.

As a person who will read anything within my reach, I find it shocking to find myself unable to get through a book. Austerlitz is stagnant, pedantic, and relentlessly dull; the entire work seems to be without affect. I cannot imagine that those who gave it such high regard actually read it. They probably just assume that anything too inaccessible to actually read and enjoy holds literary value. The book meanders aimlessly throughout the years and the cities, touching on what should be some of the most profoundly affecting issues of the human condition -- genocide, identity, family, abandonment-- and manages to make them all gray and emotionless.
