"Told with impressive scholarship and panache. The result is a narrative that is clear, balanced, and builds to its denouement with a sense of pace and tension worthy of a John le Carré novel." (Sunday Telegraph)

What was "The Gunpowder Plot" all about?
What disappointed you about The Gunpowder Plot?
A long winded and in places confusingly told, story of a foiled attempt to blow-up Parliament House in London in 16 ?? Already forgotten the date.
What was most disappointing about Antonia Frasers story?
Just far to much detail ploddingly read and totally unable to engage me.
Would you be willing to try another one of Robert Powells performances?
    Possibly
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Yes, I found out, finally after listening to the story twice, about the Gun Powder Plot.
    Any additional comments?
This book is not a patch on later books by Antonia Fraser, and to be fair, was written years before the more recent ones that I have listened to and thoroughly enjoyed. Maybe Ms Fraser received some advice from an editor over the tears.
    A Roller Coaster
I had never read or listened to Antonia Fraser before this and I am now a convert. Truly gripping narrative well told, well balanced yet pacy narrative - a masterpiece
    concise coverage of the plot
I thought this was just the right level of detail. The background detail is key to events and it was nice to have several myths busted
    Excellent content and story.
Brilliant factual content, written in a way that tells a story and keeps you gripped. Narrated beautifully and with meaning. Loved it!
    a very dull tome
the naration was the best part the narrative aver dull time I would not recommend this to any one

    Publisher's Summary:
Ackroyd portrays London from the time of the druids to the beginning of the twenty-first century, noting magnificence in both epochs, but this is not a simple chronological record. It is a comprehensive account, animated by Ackroyd's concern for the close relationship between the present and the past as well as by what he describes as the peculiar "echoic" quality of London whereby its texture and history actively affect the lives and personalities of its citizens. London is perhaps the most important study of the city ever written, and confirms Ackroyd's status as what one critic has called "our age's greatest London imagination". Trade and Enterprise explores London as a center for international trade, finance, and culture. Integral topics covered include the river, banking, science, and architecture.

    Publisher's Summary:
During the dreadful Battle at Verdun, the French command urged the British to ease the pressure and launch their planned offensive on the Somme. The battle started on July 1st 1916, and in September the British used tanks for the first time. By November, the battlefields were turned into a quagmire, and the offensive was called off. The Allies had advanced six miles, at a cost of 420,000 British and Dominion casualties, and over 200,000 Frenchmen. Throughout the dreadful winter and the spring of '17, relentless fighting continued, exacting a heavy toll of lives. Some of the battle names have come down in history: Vimy Ridge, Arras, Messines, and Menin Road. The summer of 1917 was the wettest for years, and on the 31st July the third battle of Ypres started. Fought in a man-made swamp, there were, altogether some quarter of a million casualities. By now all the participating forces were locked in deadly combat on land, sea and in the air.

Great book. My only criticism would be a lack ...
Great book. My only criticism would be a lack of clarity about the campaigns (and lack of maps). It is a book if you already know about WWI and want to read about the historic events from the point of view of the soldiers on the ground.
I'd give it ten stars if I could!
Perfect for writers, researchers, or just World War 1 aficionados. A selection of first hand accounts of the Great War.
A Great Read & Excellent History
Max Arthur's new book covering the Great War is quite unique in that its content is nearly all first-hand accounts from people who experienced the horror of the Great War. The author has utilized a number of tape recorded interviews conducted by the Imperial War Museum in 1972. Many of the tapes from the Imperial War Museum Sound Archive had been forgotten and left unheard for years.
Now Max Arthur has put together many of these unheard voices from the Great War to produce this spellbinding and captivating book. I must admit that I was reluctant to buy this book as I was worried that a book full of short accounts would be too disjointed and really not detailed enough to satisfy my interest. I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed reading this book.
Each chapter of the book was a year of the Great War and was commenced by an introduction by the author offering a brief run down on the major events of that year. Then we heard from the men and women who participated in these events, from both sides of no-man's land. The author has concentrated mainly on the Western Front and Gallipoli and has tried to run the oral segments in chronological order.
I was really taken by these segments and I found it hard to stop reading. The accounts from these soldiers and civilians alike were at times humorous, strikingly direct, horrifying and on many occasions quite sad. I was really taken in by these accounts and I don't think that any World War One library would be complete without this title sitting on the shelf. I can honestly say that I learnt quite a few things from this book and I would place it along side such works offered by Lyn MacDonald. Well done to the author and the Imperial War Museum for allowing these veterans, many now long dead, the last word on their experiences in the Great War.

    Publisher's Summary:
The first British major success of World War II was when the Royal Navy forced the preying pocket battleship, Graf Spee, to scuttle at sea. Hitler had ordered a blockade of the British Isles and for some months German U-boats and warships caused havoc among allied merchant shipping carrying vital supplies. In 1941, the one sided battle of the Atlantic became more even when the Royal Navy started moving ships in convoy with escorts using radar and information from British scientists who had cracked the Kreigsmarine version of the Enigma Code captured by the Royal Navy. The perils of the Atlantic were only equalled by the convoys on the run to northern Russia. Sub-zero temperatures, pack ice and appalling weather conditions plus the menacing Luftwaffe and the German Navy based in Norway, made it one of the most hazardous actions of the entire war. Meanwhile, in the air, bomber planes of the RAF and U.S. air force were incessantly bombarding German industries and cities. Casualties on the ground were devastating and the life expectancy of the aircrew was alarmingly short.

Would you consider the audio edition of War at Sea and in the Air to be better than the print version?
Yes, hearing the descriptive word lets you feel you were there...
What other book might you compare War at Sea and in the Air to and why?
    Band of Brothers
Have you listened to any of Timothy Wests other performances before? How does this one compare?
    no
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    no
    Any additional comments?

    Inconsistant
A great book but inconsistent volume spoils this production. Roughly 20 minutes of it is very quiet for no apparent reason.

    Publisher's Summary:
World domination is a vision most kings, queens, and emperors can only dream of, and is a path less visited for good reason. It is one that requires above all, patience, as well as skill, tenacity, and an impenetrable plan of action. The only one to ever come close to this impossible level of prestige is none other than the legendary British Empire.
It was under the reign of King Henry VII of England that this ambitious idea of global expansion was first planted. In March of 1496, the king granted an exploratory charter to John Cabot, who would pilot a successful voyage that resulted in the occupation of an uninhabited island in Newfoundland. Though Cabot's second voyage ended in disaster, the courage and will he displayed during these endeavors inspired English explorers to organize more ventures and take to the seas themselves, as they hoped to see just how far they could push the envelope.
The British Empire: The History and Legacy of the Rise and Fall of the Modern World's Most Famous Empire examines the history and legacy of one of the most important eras in modern history.

History needs more than a breezy style
This book is written in an informal, sometimes slangy way that may be intended to appeal to the younger set but just comes off as inappropriate for the subject. It's full of annoying little errors (Churchill said "This /was/ their finest hour," the British name spellings are Encyclopaedia and Endeavour, it took Washington about six weeks to ride back from the Ohio Valley to Virginia, not overnight--that woud have been some horse!). The references at the end are uniformly to websites, not even a single book, all accessed within about four days--and it shows. Not up to CRE's usual standard of brief but reliable coverage.
    Three Stars
Brief synthesis of a long story
A Great Historic Account of the Empire Where the Sun Never Set!!!
This book explains, in an exceotional manner, the record of the most remarkable empire in human history. From its rather shaky birth on a battlefield in Hastings, England by the birth, 1922 Great Britain was unquestionably the wealthiest, most multifaceted, and expertly connected counttry in existence. By the early 20th century, the empire's 57 colonies spanned about a quarter of the world's entire land mass. By than, over 458,000,000 people were under the empire's jurisdiction, and at that point in time, it was the largest empire to have ever reigned. At that point in tine, the sun, in fact, never sat on the Brutish Empire! After centurys of imperialistic and colonial growth, by the turn of the 19th Century the Empire had grown to most of its full extent. During the rest of the century the empire was able to bask in the glory of 100 years of relative peace called the "Pax Britiania". However the dawning of the 20th Century saw their accomanying policy of "Splendid Isolationship", not geting intangaled in other European powers affairs, come crashing down on their head! Though the empire had hoped to prolong the period of âsplendid isolation,â it could not ignore the rising power that was determined to knock it off its pedestal â Germany. Even more evident, Britain's grudging entry into the First World War showed that the overwhelming empire was a case of having bitten off more than it could chew, it was overextended.

For the rich war life didn't involve coupons
I expected this book to be filled with amusing stories of goings on both up stairs and down stairs during the war. It wasn't that at all. Each chapter had a main character with a story to tell of war life that involved either Claridges, The Dorchester, The Ritz or The Savoy.
Once I got over my disappointment that I wasn't going to be spending the time being amused I actually really enjoyed the interesting stories being told of the communist storming of the Dorchester and the post war strikes at the Savoy or the gay bar in the basement of the Ritz.
Through it all the duchesses continued to stay in their suites often even during the air raids and ate very well in the dining rooms - purchased food wasn't on coupons and was dependant on availability so pheasant and quail and woodcock continued to be roasted and eaten by the rich.
An interesting book with some humour but most of it was exhibiting the typical stiff upper lip stuff that went on during the war.
Exceptional book.Matthew Sweet excellent as always
Stunning. An absolutely INDISPENSABLE work, written so beautifully and read with elan and charm. 10/10

Length: 6 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-09-06
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
Blenheim was a major turning point in European history. Charles Spencer's narrative is drawn from original sources and moves seamlessly from the deliberations of kings and princes to the frontline soldiers. This is the battle that creates the enduring reputation of the British redcoat and shatters the image of the "Sun King" and his mighty army.
    Members Reviews:
A fascinating bit of history, succinctly told
If you could sum up Blenheim in three words, what would they be?
    Gripping, convoluted, magnificent.
What did you like best about this story?
The complexities of a Europe divided between two ruling families - Habsburgs and Bourbons - were clearly explained.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narrative is delivered by Princess Diana's brother in a clipped, pukka English accent, adding to the 'feel' of the story. It helped immerse the listener in this period of high stakes monarchical face-off.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Ultimately, it is a story that sounds strange to the modern ear: Men willing to face the carnage of 18th Century combat to further the ambitions of remote rulers. And yet it produced remarkable men like Marlborough and Prince Eugene, the military geniuses of their day.
    Any additional comments?
For those not familiar with this period, or why English (later British) troops were marching around central Europe, this is an excellent introduction.
    Excellent
Very clear and interesting description of the historical background and the battle itself, in a perhaps under discussed period in history. Very clear narration, which always helps,
Good book but leave narration to a professional
Really interesting book but the author doing the narration as well was not a good idea.
