Boring

I have listened to quite a few books from this author and enjoyed them. This title however has to be one of the most boring books I have ever listened to. Gave up on it half way through as I was finding it a chore to carry on. Boring, boring, boring.

The Sherlock Holmes comic book

This book is a joke! The dumbest thing I ever ordered. No mention was made that it was a comic book! And the story IS NOT the story by Sir Arthur Conon Doyle....not even a believable substitute! I would give a minus 1000 if that rating was an option!!!

This ingenious, intriguing mystery at the creepy Stoke Moran with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is a real winner ...

The streets outside 221B Baker Street were dark as Helen Stoner approached and pounded on the door of the home of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. They thought the chill of the night air made her tremble, but rather she said, "It is terror." Naturally Holmes knew a lot about her even before she opened her mouth as he was an excellent detective who could tell a lot from very simple clues other people might overlook. Helen quickly caught them up on why she had come for their help. She, her twin sister, Julia, her mother and stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, had once lived in India, but the only two survivors in the family were she and her stepfather. What concerned her was the unusual death of her sister and the strange goings on at Stoke Moran.

Dr. Roylott, who had once murdered a man, was now an eccentric recluse. He rarely spoke and when he did it was with a band of gypsies camped out near the house. He also owned a cheetah and a baboon that roamed the grounds. Holmes's interest was piqued and he urged her to tell him every little detail she could remember surrounding the mysterious death of her sister, Julia. Helen carefully told him about the fateful night that her sister had died of fright. There was that terrified scream, a "low whistle," and a "clanging metal sound." As Julia was in the throes of death she had pointed to her stepfather's room and said, "Oh, Save me, Helen! It was the speckled band!" What was she talking about?

Helen was frightened because recently, in the dead of night, she "heard that same whistle." "Fweet!" She somehow knew that death awaited her too. A motive needed to be found and Stoke Moran needed to be explored, but before they could approach the home, Dr. Grimesby Roylott came to threaten them. It was going to be dangerous and Dr. Watson would be carrying a gun.

The story that follows has been interpreted as an examination of the duality of human nature, the assertion that good and evil exists in all, and that the failure to accept this shadow side results in the evil being projected onto others.

Classic

I read this because it's a classic, and I really love reading classics. This story is very short. I think it took me about an hour to read. I knew the basic premise of the story, but beyond that, the entire plot was new to me.

I won't describe the plot because I don't want to spoil anything. However, I love the writing style, and I really like that the story is told by a third party who is friends with Dr. Jekyll.

Overall, I give it four stars because I wish it had been a little longer. It felt a little rushed at the end, but maybe I was just reading too fast because I wanted to know what would happen. I would definitely recommend this book. It's an interesting story especially when Dr. Jekyll explains his reasoning. It's a lot of food for thought.

Strange, but Great!

Well that was odd.

When you start reading a Classic, any Classic, you have to remember that it won't written like the books of today. I don't just mean that the wording will be more difficult, or even the sentence structure, I mean the viewpoint that the story is told from. I had expected this to be told from the point of view of the protagonist, Dr. Jekyll. Instead, it was told from the viewpoint of one of his friends, Mr. Utterson. I liked how it was told that way, you were able to see the other characters' reactions to Dr. Jekyll's strange behavior, and the curiosity to what may have caused it. You also are able to see their feelings toward Mr. Hyde, and how they completely disagree with Jekyll's decision to trust Hyde.

The majority of the story is told this way. Hyde is a hated man, one who people despise at first glance, thought they can never place just why that is. Jekyll is respected and loved, but has begun to act strangely, with a lot of fear and distress. Nobody can quite figure out why this is, or why he spend time with Mr.Hyde, especially after Hyde murders an important man. Gleefully, he murdered him gleefully.

The last two chapters change a bit.

Sherlock with a Big Twist..

I didn't even notice this was Sherlock the "V" or 4th until I read it and realized this was a descendant of Sherlock Holmes who lives in Miami on South Beach. It's quite a different re-imagination of the whole concept of Sherlock. I especially like the idea of the irascible unseen cook, Chef Hilario, who never leaves the kitchen at Fleming House. It would be fun to see a TV series like this. Current up to date Sherlock. I liked it very much, Will buy more just to revisit the crazy cast!

A very will written novella

A very will written novella with interesting well developed characters, a fast moving story line, and a successful conclusion. I would recommend this novella and series too anyone who is looking for a quick read. Enjoy reading

Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes team up once again to find out who really murdered Charles McCarthy ...

Dr. Watson was no longer living with his friend Sherlock Holmes on 221B Baker Street, but his interest in helping him solve another case was piqued when he received an interesting telegram. Apparently Holmes was looking into the Boscombe Valley tragedy and wanted to know if Watson was interested. It appeared to be one of those simple cut and dried cases with an obvious solution. James McCarthy had murdered his own father, was no doubt the culprit, and that was that. Guilty as charged, but Holmes smelled a rat and wanted to know if Watson would assist in the case. Mrs. Watson urged him to head to Ross and help Holmes crack the case. When the two men met up to go over the case Holmes, true to form, said "I will take nothing for granted until I've looked into things personally."

James McCarthy had been seen heading to the Boscombe Pool, gun in hand, and was actually seen arguing with his father. Patricia Moran watched as the argument turned to blows and then fled the scene. A shot while later a bloodstained James ran for help shouting that his father was dead. When Charles McCarthy's body was examined at the scene it was discovered that his "head had been struck by a blunt weapon." Oddly enough, the gun James had been carrying was clean. When James went to trial he refused to disclose what the argument was about. He muttered something about a mysterious missing cloak and someone using a special Australian call to summon him in the same way his father had once done. "Cooee!"

James kept rambling on in the courtroom and when he was asked about his father's last words he sounded positively insane. When James said, "No, he seemed delirious, mumbling something about a rat. But it made no sense at all to me," the case became even more mysterious. Not much was making sense to anyone and only Alice Turner believed he was innocent. Dr.

Thrilling Holmes Adventure

What did you love best about Sherlock Holmes: The Baron's Revenge?

The twist in having Holmes tell the story rather than Watson.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Shinwell Johnson, the thief who ends up saving the Holmes & Watson.

Have you listened to any of George Kuchs other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I listened to his Sherlock Holmes - Secret of the Dead. His narration of Holmes stories is truly wonderful and fun.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The ending with the final confrontation was highly emotional and did move me deeply.

Any additional comments?

Will happily listen to any future George Kuch narrations.
