Bad Narration

I tried this book but could not get into it as the narration voices killed it.

It was OK, not a total waste of time, but not something I want to repeat. Not necessarily going to look for more by this author.

Has Love by Design turned you off from other books in this genre?

Nope. There's always a clinker in the bunch.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Awful accent for male lead--sometimes Italian, sometimes Irish, sometimes British, occasionally approximates Australian (but not often). Every time Russ speaks, I cringe. She did an OK job with the other characters, although it was a bit difficult to distinguish between female characters.

Could you see Love by Design being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No.

Where is the quality control for narrators? Some are excellent at accents, but some, like this one, are an embarrassment. I almost felt like I was listening to Robin Williams, with how often the accent changed.

What did you like best about Here I Go Again? What did you like least?

Maybe it is a good story, maybe not... unless I buy the print version I will never really know as I couldn't listen to you Jen.

Maybe it is because the narrator of your other books was good, maybe it was you were only bad in comparison.

Hey, I have always liked your writing in the past. Maybe just spend the bucks and get a good narrator.

Probably. I love Jen Lancaster's spunk and I always get a kick out of how her snarky commentary comes through her characters.

Her non-fiction and personal stories are way better. They're much more snappy and often make me laugh aloud when listening to them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was a silly, lighthearted plot that was fun to listen to when I had an entire floor to tile. It was easy to follow, and I enjoyed myself. I would read this again on a rainy day for sure.

Think of this book like a made-for-tv movie: don't watch an ABC Family movie if you're looking for an A-List epic. It's got that teenage John Hughes / It's a Wonderful Life thing going on which is great if, like me, you love those random movies on the Disney Channel.

So Disappointed

What would have made Here I Go Again better?

I love Jen Lancaster and have enjoyed all her books until this one. The story line isn't exciting and nothing happens to keep your attention. I was so looking forward to this book coming out so I am really disappointed that I didn't enjoy it. I hope Jen goes back to writing books based on her life because those were great!

Audio is strange

I enjoyed the book but the audio quality is odd. Her voice sounds deeper and slower than it should and speeding it up didn't help.

What would have made Here I Go Again better?

Something went wrong with the file. I love the story and I think the narrator did a great job, but the voice had been electronically slowed without modulating so it got artificially deep and warped. I tried playing with the playback speed but it didn't fix the problem.

Hard to say. I suspect she did a great job as she did with Jeneration X, but some technical problem screwed it up.

Comedic spy story with female James Bond gadgets

Really cute & funny story. Total farce. Jane develops weapons for female spies: tracking tampons, mini missiles that look like vibrators, truth serum perfume, etc. Her best friend goes missing while "wearing" one of the tracking tampons. Best friend's brother comes looking for her. Grandma is a retired spy. Evil villain developing a new mind control method who tests it out by making the locals wear yellow dresses and Hawaiian shirts. Jane and company track the missing friend and end up using all the silly weapons to rescue her. Fun, with lots of laugh out loud moments. And, of course, a happy ever after ending!

I really enjoyed this light hearted girl-inspector gadget book. I found myself in a good mood when listening to and found that I couldn't wait to hear more each time I could listen to the book. A REAL FUN BOOK TO LISTEN TO

I had so much enjoyment and fun with this book. I found myself eager to catch up on the next installment each morning.

It was so funny in places and took me on a tour of NYC with surprises around many corners.

English Scarlett's best friend is "out there" Oscar, Sean the boring boyfriend back in the UK, and Jamie is the handsome new "friend" - yes its quite typical chick-lit but it does have some great twists and turns.

With all the various movie and TV references, movie stars, NY landmarks and shops, you feel very familiar with the book.

Cant say much more - dont want to even hint on the big twist but I highly recommend this story, especially if you are planning a trip to NY.

The many different twists, at first I was not sure about this book but once Scarlett and Oscar arrived in NYC I did not want it to end.

This was a good easy listen nothing too deep but I really enjoyed it. Real chick lit, if this is the genre you enjoy this is for you.

"Everything happens for a reason."

I fell in love with Scarlett O'Brien in From Notting Hill with Love... Actually. She so easily made me laugh, and I adored her love of all things movie related. I was excited to see that there was going to be a sequel, even though we had to wait quite a long time between book one and two.

This story picks up shortly after book one. We find Scarlett and Sean settled into the routine of normal life. You get the impression that things are just that, normal. When a book ends and the characters get their happily ever after, you don't think about how their life is going to now carry on the same way your life does. Work, cooking dinner, taking out the garbage, etc... I wouldn't say Scarlett and Sean are tired of each other or want to move on, it's nothing like that. It's just that you get the idea that Scarlett is a bit.. bored. So Sean suggests that she go to New York to visit her father.

I will be honest to say that at first, I was nervous when Scarlett meets Jamie in New York. I did NOT want this to turn into a love triangle.

Don't you just hate it when you listen to a sample and all is great and then when you're about 1/4 of the way through you up the speed because it's starting to drag?

I don't think it was the story, although it was rather slow at times, but the narrator had a pretty grating voice after a while.

It was a pretty good story, and although it felt at times that nothing was happening, an awful lot had happened by the end. It was enjoyable enough and did have its funny moments, and when the pace picked up at the end I found myself enjoying it a lot more.

Very enjoyable story and good narration.It made me chuckle a few times all about family and friends and good will at Christmas.

A Unique Read

If you look at the picture on the cover of this book, you think that you are in for something out of a teen magazine. You would be absolutely wrong. The story starts off in typical fashion, girl loves boy who we all know is only using her, her job is threatened, so she goes off on a mission. And then we have the transition to an excellent story. Rarely do we read a light-hearted romance with this much seriousness placed solidly within the plot.

Sydney is so real. You recognize her character immediately with her "Alaska Boots," faux cashmere, long wool coat as she steps ashore in the middle of a wild life refuge on a small island full of walruses and mud off the coast of Alaska. She is so typically big city, all elegance, and so naive and uninvolved.

But in addition to all the classic styling of a good romance, we get a special helping of insight into the hard work of environmental scientists as they struggle with minimal resources to understand our ecosystem. We leave the story with a much better appreciation of the hardships, the stultifying monotony of data collection, and the incredible value and importance of the work of scientists around the world. It is so immersed in the romance story line this story can't have one without the other.

To that, this highly skilled author gives very real insight into the personalities of these characters. Jill becomes incredibly real with her son being an oh so typical child within such a strange environment - playing make-believe Star Wars on wooden walkways instead of solid ground, drinking chocolate milk, playing on a computer powered by a solar battery and taking it all as normal.

Sydney's transition back to someone with a social conscience is developed with all the finesse one could hope for. And while we love Sydney, we know we hate Mr. Movie Star.

Ethan on the other hand is an extremely complex character for a light-hearted romance. We can't love Ethan, but we finally understand that he has many emotional hang-ups with good reason, and when his compassion shines through, we realize he is human. The cabin scene is one of the best. As is the quiet solution Ethan presents. The book is worth reading for that portion alone. (Can't say more.)

In the end I was beginning to be uncertain which of the two males Sydney was going to end up with. I truly was not sure which way the plot was going to twist.

I hate to say it, but...

...I have to agree with conservative reader's review. The book wasn't bad. Just, well, like the others said, predictable. At least most of it. When Allie caught Brad, uh, well read it and see, I have to admit I was surprised by that. I shouldn't have been because it had actually been hinted at early on. That's why I'm rating it as high as I am. The one likable female (in my opinion) got very little mention.

On a different note, Ms. Orsoff, I have to ask; are you an ABC soaps fan? If you are, you'll know what clued me in. I have to admit, that part of the story was really amusing because I recognized certain things.

I'm not giving up on Ms. Orsoff just yet. I still have two other books. I just hope they had a little more intrigue.

Barely Okay

This is my first book by this author and I think it will be my last. I was hoping to find a new fun, witty, thoughtful, "chick lit" writer, Beth Orsoff is not it. This book just seems so one dimensional from the characters to the plot. I realize that there are very few original plot lines. Stories are basically just based on a few story lines but that what makes a good writer, seeing what they can do with those stories. DisEngaged is just so basic. The main character's best friend in New York describes her as being crazy but I the good way. I did not see any of that crazy, quirky personality. I actually didn't think she had a personality at all.

The most insulting part of this book is the "magic wand" approach the author uses to resolve conflict, it feels like the author is being lazy or just uncreative to figure out interesting resolutions. Reading this book made me really appreciate the time and effort it takes writers to make multidimensional characters and plot lines even for chick lit, light beach reads and romance novels.

Most Enjoyable

I liked Allie a lot, her mom was a good representation of her generation. Loved her friend Clair,with her loyalty and support, also her ideas for spicing up a relationship. Brad the fiancé wasn't likeable of course, his mother the typical rich, judgmental snob. I think Jax was a sweetie and tho there were a couple of issues I think things turned out perfectly.

I loved this book. I disagree with the reviewers who didn't think the book had much of a plot. I liked the plot because a lot of unexpected things happened and I had to keep reading to see what would go on with Allie next.

Another Fluffy, Fun Read

While Nicole Colburn isn't the best narrator, she did grow on me. The story is cute, and formulaic. However, the journey was fun. The ugly, strait-laced, dowdy accountant becomes a beautiful, sexy, hot woman that the boss couldn't keep his eyes (hands) off of. Great book to listen to while doing chores or walking. I really enjoyed it.

What did you love best about Nobody's Cinderella?

Another very enjoyable book by Joan Reeves! Joan has a way of making the characters in her books seem as if they could be your neighbor.

As an avid audiobook listener, I enjoy it when a narrator makes the characters really come to life. It is what I look for in the audio samples... before I buy. I sincerely think the narrator does a good job and don't understand how anyone could say that this one is monotone. Anything, but!!! I would definitely buy another book narrated by Nicole Colburn.

In any case, Joan Reeves does another fine job with this story, Darcy and Janet rock... can't wait for the next one. Two thumbs up!!!

Waste of time

I live in Australia and would find it very expensive to telephone to swap a book, but if I was going to exchange a book for another title, this would certainly be one of them.

I did quite enjoy Joan Reeves other title - Old Enough to Know Better (the first of her books I had heard). It was light, but entertaining.

Unfortunately, I found this book silly, unrealistic - to the extreme with a very poor story line.

Sorry, I don't usually put an author down, but I really don't think this particular title is really worth the effort.

It is a shame, but it has turned me off trying any of her other titles.

Good Book..... BAD Narrator!

Pretty good book but BAD BAD BAD narrator, ruined the whole book for me, nearly stopped reading about 5 times, needs a narrator like Becca Patoe (I think thats her last name, off fifty shades) someone with a bit of enthusiasm and not one mono tone voice throughout the WHOLE book.

This book was a brilliant "listen" it was entertaining and heart felt. The narrator did a brilliant job of keeping is fresh and I wish there was a follow on book as I really enjoyed the two sisters dynamic and wanted to hear more about their future lives. Well written and a must read or "listen"

Didn't want the story to end. Felt like I was there with them through thick and thin

Nice story. But what was with the accents?!

They don't speak like that in Hampshire! Felt a bit like an accent bingo. Not sure it was necessary.

Best Lucy Diamond story!

This is my favorite of all Lucy Diamond's stories. The characters were brilliant and I found I couldn't stop listening. The narrator brought the story to life and her different accents and voices for the children were exceptional. My fave audible in a long while!

A story were we might find ourselves in at some stage in our lives where we lose touch with the truly important things in life !! Makes you evaluate your own life a bit !

Sophie Kinsella - but not as you know her

Having discovered the Sophie Kinsella books by accident during a rainy holiday, I quickly went through the titles published under her own name. This left me in a position where I would either have to wait for her next effort, or try the earlier books published by the same author under the name Madeleine Wickham. Not being a great fan of "girly" books, I'd hoped that I'd enjoyed them as much as I'd had Sophie's Shopaholic series, but although I found "The Wedding Girl" a reasonably good book, with an occasional hint of what was to come once Sophie Kinsella found her unique writing style, it is much more what you'd expect of the "girly book" genre. I'd rate it a fair effort by an author writing to the standard formula for the genre, but it lacks the wit, imagination and humour which are the hallmark of the Sophie Kinsella books and which make, for example, the Shopaholic series so readable. If you like books by authors like Katie Fford, you'll probably enjoy "The Wedding Girl" as well, but if Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series and books like "Twenties Girl" is your cup of tea, you may find that "The Wedding Girl" falls slightly short of your expectations.

Nice chic lit.

I bought this because I like the narrator and she didn't disappoint. Story was good. Deals with homosexuality and marriage break up.
