    Full of Hope
I have been suffering with PTSD for a life time. I have gone to several therapists seeking healing. While they were nice people, I found they did not educate me in the way I needed or provide a roadmap and specific tools for healing. Dr. Crosbys approach is specific and explicit and full of hope and encouragement. I finally feel understood; I feel more understanding of myself, and hope for a future of forward movement. This is excellent information and I recommend to anyone who suffers from trauma or loves someone who does.
I felt as if, this book was written just for me.
I felt as if, Dr Crosby wrote this book just for me. I really connected with this book, and appreciate how he recognizes, PTSD can impact anyone's life after a traumatic experience. PTSD doesn't discriminate, and I felt validated by his findings. Most people still believe this disorder is a military or first responder condition. I am just a regular person, whose life was devastated, after being in an accident with a semi. I felt even more ashamed by the judgement of others, due to the lack of information on PTSD. I became very isolated. Thank you Dr. Crosby
    I am understood...
I felt validated listening to this. I have been through it one time, and will listen again and again. I have been in therapy for PTSD for over three years. I am better, but not "whole" yet. Getting there one deep breath at a time :-)
    HOPE
At last I found HOPE in my life & a reason to keep on keeping on. Thank you Doctor. Even without knowing me you've saved my life.

to audio was greatly appreciated. WELL DONE
what I love about the audio was that it was like having a conversation with the author. I listen again and again to this work. Again, well done
A must have if you want a better quality of life!
This book is a wealth of information on how to manage thoughts, feelings, and self. It provides tools and stories to help us understand how our brain works and how we can control it. I'm buying the hard copy and I am listening to this again!
    Fascinating science in brain biology
I loved this book. I've already recommended this book to several people and shared my own personal insights gained with my family. While it certainly will help you address and understand why we hold ourselves back from all we can be, it also opens the door to compassion for others. Instead of judging others for making destructive choices, understanding the powerful biology that often hides the solutions behind the mental trigger of fear, I can offer empathy to those who simply don't realize how to not let fear rule their lives.
There is a lot of medical terminology, referencing parts of the brain, but the author simplifies as much as possible so you can keep your focus on the overall subject matter and the profound understanding we now have for how the brain reacts.

    Great book for beginner clairvoyants!
What did you love best about Clairvoyance for Beginners?
I really enjoyed the flow and content. It really brought across all of the important details for being able to unlock your hidden potential as a clairvoyant. Also if you are unsure what it means to be a clairvoyant this is a really good book to get your hands on.
I really enjoyed the fact that it's hands free though you should know that there are a lot of hands on activities and tasks that you'll want to participate in. If you take the instructions and perform each item at an pace you're comfortable with you'll be able to accomplish a lot and really enjoy yourself while building some amazing and useful life long skills. Something I really didn't catch on to very quickly in my own energy work is that learning to be a psychic in any way takes patience and time. That is something that Alexandra really emphasizes.
A really nice part is that she covers all of the things that a new clairvoyant would never consider. Such as being careful about what you say and do. It's really nice how the reader/listener is able to learn from her personal experiences. I really wish there was more room for her to tell more of them.
What about Elizabeth Cooks performance did you like?
She has an excellent voice. It never grates on your ears and is definitely the kind that helps you get lost into the story.
    Highly Recommended!
Would you listen to Clairvoyance for Beginners again? Why?
Yes! It's got a lot of content, and it's not possible to understand it all with just one listening.
What did you like best about this story?
Lots of great content, and it's easy to understand.
What about Elizabeth Cooks performance did you like?
She's written a really great book for the beginner and the advanced, and the book is narrated in a very soothing voice.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I really enjoy the personal experiences and testimonies the author shares, and it allows the listener to relate to the book more.
    Any additional comments?
Firs things first - This book is AMAZING.
Im only a little bit into the book right now, but I Can already see how amazing it is, and what kind of content lies ahead.

  • Consciousness and the Social Brain Audiobook by Michael S. A. Graziano

Title: Consciousness and the Social Brain
    Author: Michael S. A. Graziano
    Narrator: Sean Runnette
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-21-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 190 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
What is consciousness and how can a brain, a mere collection of neurons, create it? In Consciousness and the Social Brain, Princeton neuroscientist Michael Graziano lays out an audacious new theory to account for the deepest mystery of them all. The human brain has evolved a complex circuitry that allows it to be socially intelligent. This social machinery has only just begun to be studied in detail. One function of this circuitry is to attribute awareness to others: to compute that person Y is aware of thing X.
In Graziano's theory, the machinery that attributes awareness to others also attributes it to oneself. Damage that machinery and you disrupt your own awareness. Graziano discusses the science, the evidence, the philosophy, and the surprising implications of this new theory.
    Members Reviews:
    Cutting edge...
I have encountered Graziano's "Attention Schema" theory of consciousness before in other books, but this volume explains it thoroughly and decisively. While it comes somewhat short of the Holy Grail of the FINAL EXPLANATION of what makes us conscious--one questions if such a thing is ever at last possible, any more than the fish explaining how its bowl was made, ultimately unable to escape its confines--Attention Theory is about the best psychological and neurological theory that we have at present. It is a definite step forward over all former theories. A book well worth reading.
    Good idea but poor narration.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Consciousness and the Social Brain?
The last chapters discussing the nature of spirituality and possibility of machine consciousness were intriguing and refreshingly different from most other accounts.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator spoke with very little voice inflection and what was there was annoying. Every sentence ended with a lowered pitch making it sound like each one was the last one in the paragraph or chapter. It became more and more distracting until it was only possible to listen in small doses. However, the content was compelling enough to finish.
    Any additional comments?
The author has an unusual hypothesis about the relationship of awareness and attention, and even though his exposition was repetitive, the concept is exciting and compelling.
    Gonna make you think hard
If you could sum up Consciousness and the Social Brain in three words, what would they be?
    thought provoking stuff.
What did you like best about this story?
How he weaves personal anecdotes with complex scientific theories and facts to make the book much more readable.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Sean Runnette?
Did not care for his inflection. I think just personal preference.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    the chapter on spirituality.
    Any additional comments?
I have listened to this book three times now. This is brilliant stuff, and has made me rethink some of my long held beliefs.
    Questions Answered
Thoroughly explained within a strictly scientific view as well as personal viewpoints on what consciousness is and what it isn't. Enlightening to say the least.
    Plain English
I liked this book because you don't have to be a scientist to understand it. I could follow it all the way through!

    Title: Suspicious Minds

Length: 9 hrs and 50 mins

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 90 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Combining extraordinary true stories with the latest research, Joel and Ian Gold take us on a wild journey through the delusional brain to explore the intersection of neuroscience, biology, and culture.
Mr. A. was admitted to Dr. Joel Golds inpatient unit at Bellevue Hospital in 2002. He was, he said, being filmed constantly, and his life was being broadcast around the world "like The Truman Show" - the 1998 film depicting a man who is unknowingly living out his life as the star of a popular soap opera. Over the next few years, Gold saw a number of patients suffering from what he and his brother, Dr. Ian Gold, began calling the "Truman Show Delusion," launching them on a quest to understand the nature of this particular phenomenon, of delusions more generally, and the nature of madness itself.
The current view of delusions is that they are the result of biology gone awry, of neurons in the brain misfiring. In contrast, the Golds argue, delusions are in fact the result of the interaction between the brain and the social world. By exploring the major categories of delusion via fascinating case studies and marshaling the latest research in schizophrenia, the brothers reveal the role of culture and the social world in the development of psychosis, notably delusions. The result is a groundbreaking new direction for thinking about the interaction of the brain and the world around us.
Sure to appeal to those who admire the work of Oliver Sacks, Steven Pinker, and Antonio Damasio, Suspicious Minds presents a fascinating study about just how dramatically our surroundings can influence our brains.

    Intriguing
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This is a very interesting book in many parts, but I am not sure everyone will appreciate the detailed accounts of medical case histories. For me the latter was the book's weakness. However, if you fast-forward the case histories and cut to the chase, the theories of persecution, the evolutionary approach, the connections with modern (urban) life all these elements make for insightful listening. I am going through it a second time around and discovering many things that I missed. I recommend this book.
    Meh
The personal stories were interesting, but this read like a textbook of current research into what causes suspicion and stuff in the brain. Interesting information, but very very dry. And the reader was super dull. They should have hired a voice actor.
    Very interesting
I was not sure what to expect as I selected this book randomly, but it was very intriguing and leaves me with questions and something fun to research.
    Interesting, even for the layman
the golds work toes the line between that of the psychological world and that of an ordinary, curious reader. concepts are explained in a myriad of interesting ways to help get the point across, followed by examples directly from a person's story.
I learned a lot about brain function, psychology, mental illness, and how external forces influence all of the above in an engaging, fascinating way.
    just ok
While the subject matter is fascinating, I was not as captivated as I was by other books on the brain and related mental issues. I would like to have read an entire book on the suspicious mind by Oliver Sacks.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Starting where resiliency studies leave off, two psychologists explore the science of remarkable accomplishment in the wake of trauma, revealing the surprising principles that allow people to transform their lives and achieve extraordinary things.
Over four billion people worldwide will survive a trauma during their lives. Some will experience severe post-traumatic stress. Most will eventually recover and return to life as normal. But sometimes, survivors do more than bounce back. Sometimes they bounce forward.
These are the Supersurvivors - individuals who not only rebuild their lives, but also thrive and grow in ways never previously imagined. Beginning where resilience ends, David B. Feldman and Lee Daniel Kravetz look beyond the tenets of traditional psychology for a deeper understanding of the strength of the human spirit. What they have found flies in the face of conventional wisdom - that positive thinking may hinder more than help; that perceived support can be just as good as the real thing; and that realistic expectations may be a key to great success.
They introduce the humble but powerful notion of grounded hope as the foundation for overcoming trauma. The authors interviewed dozens of men and women whose stories serve as the counterpoint to the latest scientific research. Feldman and Kravetz then brilliantly weave these extraordinary narratives with new science, creating an emotionally compelling and thought-provoking look at what is possible in the face of human tragedy. Supersurvivors will reset our thinking about how we deal with challenges, no matter how big or small.

    Encouraging
I liked the multiple stories of successful trauma survivors. Many times you only hear of the disastrous results of pain. In this book there is a path of hope created and sustained for the survivors that brings encouragement to people of all walks of life.
    new favorite!
Loved the book! Highly recommended! I found myself very inspired and realistic at the same time!
    Thought provoking
Great read! Everyone of us is a super survivor. Thought provoking insight into what makes a person a super survivor and the reason they feel they are not. Loved it!!!
    Worst performance I've ever heard
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I think the content is very good, but Joel Richards narration is so annoying i can't focus on the information. Joel reads with very little inflection and an odd cadence. This narration sounds like it is being done by a first grader learning to read out loud
How could the performance have been better?
    Have anyone else do it
    Mostly Pros
Within are some great tear inducing stories that showcase how amazing humans can be with a smattering of what appears to be a slightly political point of view. Also the disjointed style of leaving a story and returning to it later makes it difficult for a audio book listener to follow at times. While I would not agree with all the authors conclusion it was a good investment of time.

    Publisher's Summary:
More than four hundred abandoned suitcases filled with patients belongings were found when Willard Psychiatric Center closed in 1995 after 125 years of operation. They are skillfully examined here and compared to the written record to create a movingand devastatinggroup portrait of twentieth-century American psychiatric care.
    Critic Reviews:
The Lives They Left Behind is a deeply moving testament to the human side of mental illness, and of the narrow margin which so often separates the sane from the mad. It is a remarkable portrait, too, of the life of a psychiatric asylum--the sort of community in which, for better and for worse, hundreds of thousands of people lived out their lives. Darby Penney and Peter Stastny's careful historical (almost archaeological) and biographical reconstructions give us unique insight into these lives which would otherwise be lost and, indeed, unimaginable to the rest of us. (Oliver Sacks, M.D., Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry, Columbia University Medical Center, Columbia University Artist, and author of Musicophilia)
    Members Reviews:
excellent voice - like the Dragnet detective
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Since I was truly curious about the subject of the history of mental health institutionsI found the listen to be time well spent. The authors were documenting many facts and, for most of the book, leaving the listener to sift through what they heard and draw their own conclusions. The narrator stayed even and true to the text. The detective style of narration interjected an ominous truth to the book. (sometimes the lists of what was found in a suitcase mayhave become tedious to listen to, but the point was well made, and with Mr. Paul's voice would send a shiver).
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Being non-fiction, this book was not a "story" per se. The facts were eerie. The points made by the writing of this book revealed the intense need for changes in the mental health care systems, and the fact that not enough changes have yet occurred remain.
What about Alex Pauls performance did you like?
I liked Mr. Paul's narration. Serious, consistent.- not getting in the way of the text revealing what the authors were wanting to reveal.
    Eaten, still digesting.
I was interested in the topic, and was left feeling saddened that this treatment mirrors patients' experiences to this day. I was propelled forward through the stories of individuals and the common reaction I had, was that of anger.
Not really the book I expected
I am currently doing some work at the site of the former Willard Asylum and during a Google search found this book. I expected a book of stories about the people and their lives here. About half or less of the book seems to be about the people. All the rest seemed like a social justice crusade against the past and current mental health system.

    Publisher's Summary:
The amazing story of a very smart Border collie who is redefining animal intelligence.
Chaser has a way with words. She knows over a thousand of themmore than any other animal of any species except humans. In addition to common nouns like house, ball, and tree, she has memorized the names of more than one thousand toys and can retrieve any of them on command. Based on that learning, she and her owner and trainer, retired psychologist John Pilley, have moved on to further impressive feats, demonstrating her ability to understand sentences with multiple elements of grammar and to learn new behaviors by imitation.
Johns ingenuity and tenacity as a researcher are as impressive as Chasers accomplishments. His groundbreaking approach has opened the door to a new understanding of animal intelligence, one that requires us to reconsider what actually goes on in a dogs mind. Chasers achievements reveal her use of deductive reasoning and complex problem-solving skills to address novel challenges.Yet astonishingly, Chaser isnt unique. Johns training methods can be adopted by any dog lover. Through the poignant story of how he trained Chaser, raised her as a member of the Pilley family, and proved her abilities to the scientific community, he reveals the positive impact of incorporating learning into play and more effectively channeling a dogs natural drives.

    Great book!
I love dogs and enjoy playing with mine quite a bit. A little while ago, I had a discussion with a dog trainer who insisted that dogs cannot recognize words, only sounds. To me this did not make sense. For words are sounds, and I have observed my own dog, a yellow lab, learn to distinguish her toys by name, for example. So, when I came across this book, I bought it in an instant. It not only confirmed my observations -that dogs can learn words- but also gave me insights into cognitive processes and tips for dog training through play! Besides, it's a really well told and fun story to read/hear!
The fantastic Chaser and how he got there
Takes a lot of time and dedication to work this much with a dog. Helps to have a few graduate students around. The end results is a story that will entertain and fascinate you. Even if you can't spend as much time training your dog, it will make you renew your efforts. It will also provide a lot of ideas for you and your dog.
    An Inspiring Way to Retire!
The information provided on Chaser and his ability to learn was very interesting to me personally. However, I found the positive influence this project had on the author, Johm Pilley, equally fascinating. Pilley did his extensive work with Chaser in his late 70s, and it is still continuing into his mid-80s.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
What if you had to take an art class in which you were only taught how to paint a fence? What if you were never shown the paintings of van Gogh and Picasso, weren't even told they existed? Alas, this is how math is taught, and so for most of us it becomes the intellectual equivalent of watching paint dry.
In Love and Math, renowned mathematician Edward Frenkel reveals a side of math we've never seen, suffused with all the beauty and elegance of a work of art. In this heartfelt and passionate audiobook, Frenkel shows that mathematics, far from occupying a specialist niche, goes to the heart of all matter, uniting us across cultures, time, and space.
Love and Math tells two intertwined stories: of the wonders of mathematics and of one young man's journey learning and living it. Having braved a discriminatory educational system to become one of the twenty-first century's leading mathematicians, Frenkel now works on one of the biggest ideas to come out of math in the last 50 years: the Langlands Program.
Considered by many to be a Grand Unified Theory of mathematics, the Langlands Program enables researchers to translate findings from one field to another so that they can solve problems, such as Fermat's last theorem, that had seemed intractable before. At its core, Love and Math is a story about accessing a new way of thinking, which can enrich our lives and empower us to better understand the world and our place in it. It is an invitation to discover the magic hidden universe of mathematics.
