This Diet did not work for me. Keto does.
What did you love best about The Chemistry of Calm?
I''m not one for writing reviews, but if this helps so much as one person half as much as it's helped me it will be worth it.
I absolutely LOVE this book. With one MAJOR exception. The diet.
I was on a "healthy" high carbohydrate diet for years leading to the culmination of general anxiety and panic disorder.
I followed a strict "healthy" diet similar to this book...centered on whole grains, legumes and complex carbohydrates. I ate very little sugar, very low amounts of "unhealthy saturated fats" zero trans fats, and almost zero processed foods. I ate six small meals a day and exercised 4-5 days a week.
Following this ideal diet, I was gassy, carried an amount of unattractive body fat and would experience "hanger" and serious energy lulls when I would miss a meal. I stuck to this diet though because it's what many experts consider to be optimal.
I now understand that at least for me, I do not function well on a high carbohydrate diet. I had all the symptoms of leaky gut syndrome which explains that even though I ate plenty of "serotonin" producing carbs....my stomach was probably not producing serotonin.
I now understand that regardless of whether or not a carbohydrate is whole or complex, it is converted into a large amount of blood glucose and thus a large insulin spike and crash. Also, many whole grains are loaded with harsh byproducts that can destroy the gut flora leading to a host of problems.
Only when I switched to a WELL FORMULATED ketogenic diet with bouts of intermittent fasting did my anxiety finally subside.
Listen, everybody is different and I'm well aware there is no perfect diet for everyone. I happen to be carb intolerant and very sensitive to grains as are many people I know. The diet in this book is indeed a large improvement over the standard american diet. Cutting out high fructose corn syrup and eating a wide variety of colorful vegetables and cruciferous vegetables is tremendous advice
If the diet in this book does not work for you, I highly recommend looking into a WELL FORMULATED ketogenic diet. I say WELL FORMULATED specifically because keto must be done carefully. It is not so simple as cutting out all carbs and it is NOT, I repeat NOT!! a high protein diet. In fact, the protein requirements are nearly identical to this book. You must measure your blood ketones and experiment with food sensitivities such as dairy, eggs, nuts and fish.
I now experience the most energy of my life, nearly zero anxiety, and an effortlessly lean body.I NEVER experience "hanger" because my body runs on ketones produced from stored body fat instead of glucose that needs to be replenished every 2-3 hours.
Think about this for a second.

    Title: Persephone Rising
    Subtitle: Awakening the Heroine Within
    Author: Carol S. Pearson
    Narrator: Callie Beaulieu
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-13-15
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Our era of professional and familial pressures, constant connection, and a renewed debate on "having it all" presents unprecedented challenges to contemporary women. In Persephone Rising, celebrated scholar of depth psychology and archetypes Carol S. Pearson brings a fresh vision for meeting those challenges and rising above them, as only she can.
Drawing on her profound understanding of myth's enduring power to catalyze transformations, Pearson guides listeners on a journey of self-discovery, teaching us how to activate and apply the archetypes of Demeter and Persephone, as well as Zeus and Dionysus, in our own lives. Illuminating ancient wisdom for a modern audience, Persephone Rising offers meaningful and effective strategies to answer the call to heroism in our own lives. Just as Demeter and Persephone discovered, in the midst of great difficulty, their own powers, gifts, and abilities for creating a better path not only for themselves but the world, Persephone Rising teaches that each one of us has more options than choosing whether to lean in or out; we have the power to change ourselves and thus our world.
    Critic Reviews:
"Carol Pearson's rich revisioning focuses on Persephone's rising, on her return to the upper world as emblematic of the power inherent in all of us to move beyond failure and conflict to lives filled with joy, fearlessness and abundance." (Christine Downing, author of The Long Journey Home)
    Members Reviews:
    Fascinating book, terrible, robotic narratior
Would you try another book from Carol S. Pearson and/or Callie Beaulieu?
I found the text itself -- as written by Carol S. Pearson -- to be very interesting, illuminating, and unusual. I was so drawn to much of what she said that I will purchase this book as a book so that I can enjoy it on the page.
The narration by Callie Beaulieu was absolutely bizarre. It had all of the qualities of a hurried robot, such that I had to go back and check that there actually was a human involved in the reading. I gave a quick listen to a couple of other audible titles with which she was involved, and she sounded perfectly lovely -- so why on earth she did her darndest to sound like a computer on double speed with this subtle, nuanced work is beyond me. I had to stop listening partway through because I could not bear the terrible narration. It is that bad.
Do you think Persephone Rising needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
The idea that we are acting within large, powerful archetypal energies is not original to Carol Pearson, but what she does with it is really unique. I'd love to see her continue to apply her ideas.
    Any additional comments?
This is a wonderful book and it deserved careful, attentive narration. Instead it received one of the strangest readings I have ever heard -- truly, I absolutely believed (until I went back to check) that Audible had foregone a human reader and used a computer prototype that just wasn't working well.

    Title: Nonsense
Subtitle: The Power of Not Knowing
    Author: Jamie Holmes
    Narrator: Jamie Holmes
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-13-15
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 113 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
An illuminating look at the surprising upside of ambiguity - and how, properly harnessed, it can inspire learning, creativity, even empathy.
Life today feels more overwhelming and chaotic than ever. Whether it's a confounding work problem or a faltering relationship or an unclear medical diagnosis, we face constant uncertainty. And we're continually bombarded with information, much of it contradictory.
Managing ambiguity - in our jobs, our relationships, and daily lives - is quickly becoming an essential skill. Yet most of us don't know where to begin.
As Jamie Holmes shows in Nonsense, being confused is unpleasant, so we tend to shutter our minds as we grasp for meaning and stability, especially in stressful circumstances. We're hard-wired to resolve contradictions quickly and extinguish anomalies. This can be useful, of course. When a tiger is chasing you, you can't be indecisive. But as Nonsense reveals, our need for closure has its own dangers. It makes us stick to our first answer, which is not always the best, and it makes us search for meaning in the wrong places. When we latch on to fast and easy truths, we lose a vital opportunity to learn something new, solve a hard problem, or see the world from another perspective.
In other words confusion - that uncomfortable mental place - has a hidden upside. We just need to know how to use it. This lively and original audiobook points the way.
Over the last few years, new insights from social psychology and cognitive science have deepened our understanding of the role of ambiguity in our lives, and Holmes brings this research together for the first time, showing how we can use uncertainty to our advantage. Filled with illuminating stories - from spy games and doomsday cults to Absolut Vodka's ad campaign and the creation of Mad Libs - Nonsense promises to transform the way we conduct business, educate our children, and make decisions.
In an increasingly unpredictable, complex world, it turns out that what matters most isn't IQ, willpower, or confidence in what we know. It's how we deal with what we don't understand.
    Critic Reviews:
"Holmes...debuts with a provocative analysis of the roots of uncertainty.... The author's bright anecdotes and wide-ranging research stories are certain to please many readers." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Uncomfortable with ambiguity? Maybe you shouldn't be. In this energetic, tale-filled, fascinating tour of a broad horizon, Jamie Holmes shows that people often prosper when and because they are uncertain. A persuasive argument, but one thing is clear: You'll learn a lot from this book." (Cass R. Sunstein, professor, Harvard University, and coauthor of Nudge)
"Jamie Holmes has written a refreshing, lively book sparkling with insights and entertaining stories that illustrate how the mind deals with ambiguity. And he makes the case well that how we manage ambiguity both as individuals and as a species is critical to our future success." (Peter Bergen, author of Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden from 9/11 to Abbottabad)

    Great Material - Weak Delivery
The material in "Nonsense" is great. It explores why the mind greatly desires certainty such that it will prefer certain-sounding nonsense over easily observed contradictions of that nonsense.

    Not Bad

It's hard to summarize a book no doubt. I.wonder why this 17 min. summary seemed to have so few ideas. I'm sure it had more but I can only remember 2. For some decisions:
    1. We can gather too much information and become unnecessarily confused by it.
    2. We are better off making snap decisions, realizing that our subconscious has provided us with the informatio
seems like there's a lot more information in book
I read the book there was way more information inside of it I thought the summary was good but it was rather incomplete
    one takeaway
Some situations require that I go by split second gut reaction. Other times it requires deliberate planning. Remembering to blink is key.
    interesting and useful
I found this book to be incredibly useful I'm glad I didn't waste my time reading the entire book because the summary was perfect. it captured the essence of the book in a short period of time.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Have you ever skipped from great mood to terrible, possibly three or four times - notwithstanding that nothing in the real world has changed? A great many individuals take medication to suppress their mood swings. In 2011 drug companies sold $11 billion value of antidepressants; antipsychotics (to fight additionally weakening tribulations like bipolar issue and mental trips) included $18 billion. At that point there are millions more who experience the ill effects of the sort of mellow yet discomforting moodiness that prompts terrible choices like offering an underestimated stock or squabbling with a life partner but doesn't justify a solution. Like anything else, mastering your moods takes practice. Whatever routines you pick, move rapidly before the unsettling begins to eat at itself. Get a lucid view and understand the situation. There are various alleged psychological twists that exacerbate things that appear other than they truly are and in this way trigger terrible moods. Henceforth Greek logician Epictetus' perception: "Individuals are not exasperated by things, but rather by the perspective that they take of them." In this book you will learn to see a different perspective on how you see things and avoid emotional rollercoasters.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 57 mins

    Publisher: Wetware Media
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 33 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
A fascinating look at the evolution of behavioral science, the revolutionary way it's changing the way we live, and how nurturing environments can increase people's well-being in virtually every aspect of our society, from early childhood education to corporate practices. If you want to know how you can help create a better world, listen to this book.
What if there were a way to prevent criminal behavior, mental illness, drug abuse, poverty, and violence? Written by behavioral scientist Tony Biglan, and based on his ongoing research at the Oregon Research Institute, The Nurture Effect offers evidence-based interventions that can prevent many of the psychological and behavioral problems that plague our society.
For decades behavioral scientists have investigated the role our environment plays in shaping who we are, and their research shows that we now have the power within our own hands to reduce violence, improve cognitive development in our children, increase levels of education and income, and even prevent future criminal behaviors. By cultivating a positive environment in all aspects of society - from the home to the classroom and beyond - we can ensure that young people arrive at adulthood with the skills, interests, assets, and habits needed to live healthy, happy, and productive lives.
The Nurture Effect details over 40 years of research in the behavioral sciences as well as the author's own research. Biglan illustrates how his findings lay the framework for a model of societal change that has the potential to reverberate through all environments within society.
    Members Reviews:
    Behavioral Science Applied
Biglan has a broad understanding of the extensive evidence for large-scale preventative interventions aimed at improving lives in our society. He also does a fine job explaining the historical underpinnings of behavioral psychology. More work like this is needed in the world.

  • The Wisdom of Near Death Experiences Audiobook by Penny Sartori

Title: The Wisdom of Near Death Experiences
Subtitle: How Understanding NDE's Can Help Us to Live More Fully
    Author: Penny Sartori
    Narrator: Julie Maisey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-30-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 71 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Dr. Penny Sartori is a registered nurse who began researching Near Death Experiences (NDEs) in 1995 after one of her long-term intensive care patients begged her to let him die in peace. The event shook her deeply and eventually led her to enroll in a PhD program to research NDEs. The findings, along with the profound spiritual lessons that she has gleaned from her work, are published here.
During her academic work, Dr. Sartori studied three samples of ICU patients during a five year period. The first consisted of 243 patients from the first year of data collection who survived their ICU experience. Of those, two experienced an NDE, and two an out-of-body experience (OBE). The second cohort consisted of survivors of cardiac arrest during the five year period. Of those, 39 patients (or 18%) experienced an NDE. The third cohort consisted of all the patients who experienced an NDE during the five year period.
Their stories are captured in her new book. One patient in particular, patient number 10, stands out for Dr. Sartori.
When asked about the biggest takeaway from her research, Dr. Sartori says, "In medicine, we're trained to believe that the brain gives rise to consciousness. My research into NDEs has made me question this prevailing paradigm, which admittedly is very widespread. The most important lesson for me has been a deeper appreciation for death and a whole lot less fear and anxiety about it."
In addition to detailing dozens of case studies, the book also discusses childhood NDEs, differences in NDEs among different cultures, and the after-effects of NDEs - one of which is the inability, in some patients, to wear a wrist-watch.
Penny Sartori PhD, RGN is an expert in NDEs and undertook the UK's first long-term prospective study. She is the author of The Near-Death Experiences of Hospitalized Intensive Care Patients: A Five Year Clinical Study and lectures both nationally and internationally.
    Critic Reviews:
"Nurse Penny Sartori was driven by an experience with a traumatized dying patient to study near-death experiences, not to pursue what might happen in an afterlife but rather to improve what happens in this life. Her goal was to learn all she could about the dying process in order to help her patients find meaning in their illness and restore a sense of well-being in their lives. The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences, the fruit of her labors, is an invaluable resource for health care workers, for dying patients and their families, and for all of us who will face death eventually. (Bruce Greyson, M.D., Carlson Professor of Psychiatry & Neurobehavioral Sciences University of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville, VA)
"With more than twenty years experience of nursing dying people in an intensive therapy unit , plus a Ph.D. in Near-death Experiences, Dr. Sartori is very well qualified to discuss issues of death and dying. She believes that NDEs provide us with a greater understanding of the dying process and that care of terminally ill patients could be enhanced if NDEs would more widely studied. A greater acceptance of the inevitability of death would help the situation of terminally ill people. At present they are increasingly exposed to invasive and burdensome treatments even when prospects for recovery are recognised as minimal.

    Publisher: dsk-enterprise
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 40 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Schizophrenia has become a recognized psychotic disorder in modern day psychology and research has shown that one in 100 people suffer from this disease in some proportion or degree. It is a dreaded disease and comes as a near death blow to those who are diagnosed with this condition. This fear does not necessarily arise from the scary disease it actually is, but various misconceptions, myths, and misunderstanding that surround it. This disorder has been very thoroughly misunderstood and misrepresented. As a result, there is great confusion and stigma attached to it. This stigma, social pressure, and public opinion have made it very difficult to get the disorder diagnosed, treated or managed. Persons suffering from schizophrenia or under a risk of being affected by it are very insecure due to this public opinion. There has been so much talk about this psychotic disorder with little or no knowledge about it, that it has spread a rumor about the hopelessness and incurability of it. This book aims at spreading awareness and information about schizophrenia and act as a guide for those who want to have a better understanding of this horrible condition.
    Members Reviews:
    Spot on!
I thought this book was spot on from what I know and understand about schizophrenia. Also , I think it would be very helpful in helping people understand and be supportive for any family members or self with this condition.
    Very Informative
Puts all aspects of schizophrenia in perspective. Clear understanding. Take the fear out of what to expect.
    Inconsistent and disappointing
I only bought this out of general interest, and found the material poorly presented and organized for large portions. I find it hard to imagine this being a helpful book for the friends and family of the newly diagnosed. Advice for family and friends doesn't even start until Chapter 5. Prior to that there is an odd, impersonal tone that feels flat (ironic). Reads like a pamphlet at times, making overly generalized statements with no mention of references. And once it does actually get to advice for family and friends much of the guidance sounds cursory, and is even contradictory at times, and is anything but heartening. Not completely without value, but I would be hesitant to recommend.
    Very generic
100% generic information. Any science fans will be very disappointed. However, if generic information is what you want then it's tolerably (only because it's so short).
basic first line of information that you need
well written basic information. Does not go into a lot of detail but it answers your primary questions. I found it very helpful.

    Very Enlightning !
What did you love best about INFP: Understanding & Relating with the Healer (MBTI Personality Types)?
As an INFP, I found the book to be very informative and have come away from the reading feeling like somebody really "gets" me.. I thought the narrator did a wonderful job and felt comfortable just listening to him speak to me about my personality type.
What was one of the most memorable moments of INFP: Understanding & Relating with the Healer (MBTI Personality Types)?
The part of Romantic relationships...and what can be done to help overcome weaknesses,in general.
What about Pete Berettas performance did you like?
    Loved it !
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, I just found myself lost in thought about the very accurate description of my personality.
    That was amazing !
    Any additional comments?
A very enjoyable bit of time ..well spent !
    Very useful insights...
Enjoyed the pithy yet thorough overview. Presented in a positive light with practical ways to enhance strengths and bolster less desireable aspects.
    Much appreciated.
    Thank you...
    Narrator was not good
Narrator was horrible, I couldn't even listen to him, which ruined the book for me.
    So telling
Helped make sense of who I am and hope to improve myself. Worthy buy. Plus, you can learn a lot about others too.
OK if you don't know much about the MBTI
If you don't know much about the MBTI, and by that I mean not very much at all, then this could be useful. Most of this information - and more - can be found on the internet with a little effort. Also, the content promised in the title doesn't really start until Chapter 4 after you've been reminded repeatedly that the material is copyrighted.
Not worth the money or (limited) time for me but it might be for you.
