Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Odds are good that you or someone that you know has schizoid personality disorder. Schizoids seem to exist in the world on a different level than social beings and empaths. They are the quiet observers. Other people are occasionally curious as to how the schizoid thinks, feels, and lives. The schizoid seems to be marching to the beat of a very different drum.
Schizoids are not given enough attention. The world of psychology can educate us a little bit on the 'how' and the 'why' of schizoid disorder. The problem is that each schizoid can be different from other people who are schizoids. While there is a loose definition for the different types of schizoids, everyone's personality is different and has different inborn traits. Our experiences and our brain wiring both help to develop who we are in reference to others and to the world around us.
    Members Reviews:
    Basic, starter book
A good place to start with the fundamentals of schizoid personality types. The book is short, to the point in covering 4 varieties of disorder and outlines possible social problems.
    One Star
Terrible. Just talks about the disorder. Might as well read wikipedia.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The best-selling author of The Art of Possibility returns with a new vision for achieving true human fulfillment.
In this powerful and inspiring book, family systems therapist and executive coach Rosamund Stone Zander invites listeners to shed the childhood stories that hold us back and enter a realm of true maturity and fulfillment, where limitless growth becomes possible.
As children we develop stories about how the world works, most of which get improved upon and amended over time. But some do not, even as we mature in other ways. Opinionated, self-centered, and fear-driven, these "child stories" are the source of the behavioral and emotional patterns that hold us back. When we learn to identify and rewrite these stories, we can do remarkable, even magical things.
Zander shows us that life is a story we tell ourselves and that we have the power to change that story. She illuminates how breaking old patterns and telling new stories can transform not just our own lives but also our relationships with others - whether in marriages, classrooms, or businesses. Finally, she demonstrates how, with this new understanding of ourselves and our places within an interconnected world, we can take powerful action in the collective interest and gain a sense of deep connection to the universe.
This galvanizing book expands our notions of how much we can grow and change, whether we can affect others or the world at large, and how much freedom and joy we can experience. Stimulating and profound, it is the perfect companion to her beloved first book, The Art of Possibility.
    Critic Reviews:
"Rosamund Zander is a miracle. Her generous voice will resonate with you, change you and help you create work that matters." (Seth Godin, author of The Icarus Deception)

  • Chancers Audiobook by Susan Stellin, Graham MacIndoe

    Title: Chancers
Subtitle: Addiction, Prison, Recovery, Love: One Couple's Memoir

    Narrator: Susan Stellin, Graham MacIndoe
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 10 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-07-16
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 112 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In this powerful memoir of addiction, prison, and recovery, a reporter and a photographer tell their gripping story of falling in love, the heroin habit that drove them apart, and the unlikely way a criminal conviction brought them back together.
When Susan Stellin asked Graham MacIndoe to shoot her author photo for an upcoming travel book, she barely knew him except for a few weekends with mutual friends at a summer house in Montauk. He was a gregarious, divorced Scotsman who had recently gotten sober; she was an independent New Yorker who decided to take a chance on a rough-around-the-edges guy. But their relationship was soon tested when Susan discovered that Graham still had a drug habit he was hiding.
From their harrowing portrayal of the ravages of addiction to the stunning chain of events that led to Graham's arrest and imprisonment at Rikers Island, Chancers unfolds in alternating chapters that offer two perspectives on a relationship that ultimately endures against long odds. Susan follows Graham down the rabbit hole of the American criminal justice system, determined to keep him from becoming another casualty of the war on drugs. Graham gives a stark, riveting description of his slide from brownstone Brooklyn to a prison cell, his gut-wrenching efforts to get clean, and his fight to avoid getting exiled far away from his son and the life he built over 20 years.
Beautifully written, brutally honest, yet filled with suspense and hope, Chancers will resonate with anyone who has been touched by the heartache of addiction, the nightmare of incarceration, or the tough choice of leaving or staying with someone who is struggling on the road to recovery. By sharing their story, Susan and Graham show the value of talking about topics many of us are too scared to address.
    Critic Reviews:
"Emotionally resonant and evenly structured, their tandem chronicle resists overly romanticizing their bittersweet interactions to focus on the dedication and devotion necessary to make their already-complicated relationship survive the fallout of critical hardships. An emotionally complex and intensely personal binary memoir of addiction and sustainable love." (Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
Skillful mix of personal and political
I listened to the audio version of Chancers during a road trip and was immediately drawn into the memoir, which is narrated by the authors themselves. It is an amazing love story but extends beyond the personal realm, delving into addiction, criminal justice, and immigration. I found it rivoting and can easily imagine it becoming a Hollywood movie.
AMAZING! THANK YOU SUSAN AND GRAHAM! INSPIRING!
I listened to this audio book and finished it in two days. My husband an addict like me actually bought a splitter so that we could listen to the book together! We too struggled with addiction in the past, we started using together after a solid year of being together. I desperately wanted to stop and did while he had a much harder time. He had been incarcerated for over a year and his 3 kids will no longer speak to him. However, hearing your story has helped us both by just knowing it is possible to trust again and to stay clean and move on. Thank you Susan for not giving up on someone who had given up on himself and thank you Graham for your willingness to share your story and your openness.

Length: 7 hrs and 14 mins

    Release date: 05-24-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 27 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
When the ashes had settled after World War II and the Allies convened an international war crimes trial in Nuremberg, a psychiatrist, Douglas Kelley, and a psychologist, Gustave Gilbert, tried to fathom the psychology of the Nazi leaders using extensive psychiatric interviews, IQ tests, and Rorschach inkblot tests. Never before or since has there been such a detailed study of governmental leaders who orchestrated mass killings.
Before the war crimes trial began, it was self-evident to most people that the Nazi leaders were demonic maniacs. But when the interviews and psychological tests were completed, the answer was no longer so clear. The findings were so disconcerting that portions of the data were hidden away for decades, and the research became a topic for vituperative disputes. Gilbert thought that the war criminals' malice stemmed from depraved psychopathology. Kelley viewed them as morally flawed, ordinary men who were creatures of their environment. Who was right?
Drawing on his decades of experience as a psychiatrist and the dramatic advances within psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience since Nuremberg, Joel E. Dimsdale looks anew at the findings and examines in detail four of the war criminals: Robert Ley, Hermann Göring, Julius Streicher, and Rudolf Hess. Using increasingly precise diagnostic tools, he discovers a remarkably broad spectrum of pathology. Anatomy of Malice takes us on a complex and troubling quest to make sense of the most extreme evil.

enjoyed this book thoroughly. Delving into the Nazi hierarchy's phycology has been something I've pondered for years. listened to this book in one setting, couldn't stop listening it was so absorbing!
    Malice
The first half of book is old information. Last half much better making it worth the time.
    A Fascinating Study
This was a fascinating journey into the minds of some the most despicable people the world has known. A look into their brains however, raises more questions than answers.
The only problem I had with this book is the absence of the question of sin. Psychopathology will never be able to explain it away. At some point all of these people acted against their consciences and continued to act that way for their own benefit.
I the latter chapters, the author delves into a modern diagnosis of each of these men given the psychological data collected at the trials. There is nothing to explain why the millions of people who have the same diagnoses have not committed the same offenses
    insightful
Very technical but insightful. only worth a listen if you are into the deeper psychology. but a great listen.
    Boring
i am a student of war crimes and this gave nothing new...just really a rehash of old material.
The author refers to meeting the Nuremberg executioner (the event that prompted the book) bur never mentions what was discussed at the meeting - that wud have made for an interesting read

    Release date: 05-23-16
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Much has been written of the forbidden pleasures. But what of the "unforbidden" pleasures?
Unforbidden Pleasures is the singular new book from Adam Phillips, the author of Missing Out, Going Sane, and On Balance. Here, with his signature insight and erudition, Phillips takes Oscar Wilde as a springboard for a deep dive into the meanings and importance of the unforbidden, from the fall of our "first parents", Adam and Eve, to the work of the great psychoanalytic thinkers.
Forbidden pleasures, he argues, are the ones we tend to think about, yet when you look into it, it is probable that we get as much pleasure, if not more, from unforbidden pleasures than from those that are taboo. And we may have underestimated just how restricted our restrictiveness, in thrall to the forbidden and its rules, may make us. An ambitious book that speaks to the precariousness of modern life, Unforbidden Pleasures explores the philosophical, psychological, and social dynamics that govern human desire and shape our everyday reality.
    Critic Reviews:
"A dense, challenging, provocative meditation on morality and identity." (
    Kirkus)
    Members Reviews:
Probably great ideas lost in fuzzy writing
I read Adam Phillips "Missing Out". The topic and review sounded fascinating, unusual, something to broaden the thinking and challenge the mind. I was disappointed, and in reading the generous Look Inside of this it seems the same. Phillips seems very intelligent, extremely well read, puts a lot of work into his books, yet somehow manages to leave me wondering what insight I'm supposed to have received from what he just said. Like he can't get his words out of his own way so he can say what he thinks. Every once in a while he starts to write lucidly and you think, at last, here we go, and then he's back into muddled writing. This book sounds like another fascinating idea, and when I first started reading the Look Inside (lots of pages, presumably chosen by the author to best represent the book) I didn't even remember this was the same author, but as I read the fuzzy writing I had a sense of deja vu. Then I realized it's the same author as Missing Out. I think he has a lot to offer. I wish some very involved editor or a co-author could collaborate and get his insights clearly down on paper.
    A nice read
Interesting and enjoyable. Sometimes it lacks a bit of fluid, that is, some passages are more captivating than others, but i recommend it,specially if one aprreciates Freud ideas.
Adam Phillips is a damn genius. Enough said. ...

Summary of Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely. Includes analysis.
    Preview:
Predictably Irrational provides a data-driven window into the ways in which the human mind fails to make rational choices time and time again. While some of these irrational decisions are humorous or trivial, in many cases these behaviors can have far-ranging implications for governments and health care systems. However, understanding that we, as humans, are predisposed to making irrational decisions is the first step to preventing these behaviors and overcoming the foibles of our minds.
Most people fail to recognize that their minds will, at some point, fail them or stray from the course they believe they should take. For example, consumers may think they're getting a good deal on a television when, in fact, buyers are merely responding to the product because it is cheaper than the first television they saw in the store.

    Interesting look at human behavior
Understanding when and why we all behave the way we do in situations is the key to changing the behavior. According to Ariely, irrational behaviors follow a predictable pattern.
Beliefs impact decision making as when we believe something that costs more is better than an identical product or service that costs less. Our expectations impact our decision making as well. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Ariely included the example of beliefs surrounding diet sodas. It seems that people who favor diet sodas tend to be overweight, while people who drink water tend to be thinner. With zero calories you would expect that it would not matter, but Ariely discovered that overweight people tend to believe that they have saved calories by choosing a diet soda and then make up for the savings but eating more high calorie food, whereas those who chose water, donât believe the same thing. To them, it was just a better choice.
If you want to make better choices I would recommend getting the full book. I was given this summary in exchange for my honest review and the opinion expressed is my own. I would recommend getting this summary as a companion to the book.
    Great read, recommend it!
This book has some great information about the human mind and why we do what we do! As someone who studied psychology in school, I really connected with some of the things the author said. I recommend this book to anyone with twenty minutes to read! It opened my eyes to how and why I make buying decisions, why it's difficult for me to sell things or get rid of them, and why it's easy to remove yourself from money when it's not physically in your reach. As a reminder this is a summary of the full book, and I was able to get it for free.
Not as logical as we think
As humans we pride ourselves in our rationality. It is what defines us as a species, what makes us superior to computers. But "Predictably Irrational" provides a data-driven window into the ways in which the human mind fails to make rational choices time and time again.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Why do we think, feel, and act in ways we wish we did not? For decades, New York Times best-selling author Dr. David A. Kessler has studied this question with regard to tobacco, food, and drugs. Over the course of these investigations, he identified one underlying mechanism common to a broad range of human suffering. This phenomenon - capture - is the process by which our attention is hijacked and our brains commandeered by forces outside our control.
In Capture, Dr. Kessler considers some of the most profound questions we face as human beings: What are the origins of mental afflictions, from everyday unhappiness to addiction and depression, and how are they connected? Where do healing and transcendence fit in to this realm of emotional experience?
Analyzing an array of insights from psychology, medicine, neuroscience, literature, philosophy, and theology, Dr. Kessler deconstructs centuries of thinking, examining the central role of capture in mental illness and questioning traditional labels that have obscured our understanding of it. With a new basis for understanding the phenomenon of capture, he explores the concept through the emotionally resonant stories of both well-known and unknown people caught in its throes.
The closer we can come to fully comprehending the nature of capture, Dr. Kessler argues, the better the chance to alleviate its deleterious effects and successfully change our thoughts and behavior. Ultimately, Capture offers insight into how we form thoughts and emotions, manage trauma, and heal. For the first time, we can begin to understand the underpinnings of not only mental illness but also our everyday worries and anxieties. Capture is an intimate and critical exploration of the most enduring human mystery of all: the mind.

    Confused
I was hoping for some information on how our minds get captured and how to deal with that. This book is basically 10 chapters of never ending examples of people with problems. I'm not kidding it is a book consisting of examples. Not even examples that lead you anywhere. Just long winded rambling on examples. Almost nothing of a practical nature. The useful information could be summarized on one page.
    Meh
Save yourself the trouble and just download a mindfulness meditation book. This one is mostly fluffy stories and a half chapter of practical advice.
