Here's the condensed formula I learned from the book.: be there, be serious, think long term.
    Good read.
Although much of it is obvious to those attentive to Africa. African enterprise is real. You have to listen to your passion and follow your heart to execute your business model in Africa.

    Title: Saved
Subtitle: How I Quit Worrying About Money and Became the Richest Guy in the World
    Author: Ben Hewitt
    Narrator: James C. Moore
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-21-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
When Ben Hewitt met Erik Gillard, he was amazed. Here was a real-life rebel living happily and comfortably in small-town Vermont on less than $10,000 per year. Gillard's no bum. He has a job, a girlfriend, good friends, and strong ties to the community. But how he lives his life - and why - launches Hewitt on a quest to understand the true role of money and mindless consumerism in our lives. By meeting and befriending people like Erik Gillard, Hewitt realized that their happiness was real. What was he - and the rest of a deeply unhappy population - missing?
Saved is the humorous, surprising, and ultimately life-changing result of Hewitt's quest, a narrative that challenges everything we know about the meaning of money. Hewitt uses his sharp eye for story, exhaustive reporting, and his own experience living below his means to bring what he learned into an even larger context. How does money really work? How can a bankrupt society move forward? The answers are not what you think, and Hewitt has written an important book for our times.

    Publisher's Summary:
The U.S. dollar wobbles on the brink of catastrophe.
For the first time in history, the debt of the most powerful government on Earth, leading the worlds largest economy, has been downgraded by Standard & Poors to Double AA from a perfect Triple AAA.
The political grandstanding of the Republicans and Democrats over the debt ceiling made many Americans and others around the world doubt our leadership. And many feel the final deal doesnt go far enough to reduce US government spending.
US government debt now exceeds the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The 2007-2009 financial crisis appears to have been the first step toward a deflationary depression that could destroy the savings of three generations of Americans. Weve technically been recovering since March 2009, but despite all government and Fed actions to stimulate the US economy, unemployment stubbornly remains over 9%.
That is, unless the governments massive cash creation unleashes a wave of hyperinflation.

1-step sure fire way to save $9 - don't buy this book
I bought this book thinking it would offer some insights into investing to safeguard against possible burst or collapse in the U.S. dollar or the stock market economy. This book advertises itself as offering a clear 3-step process. Such an outline is not in the actual text. It is a lot of general investment background information pre-loaded at the front with a number of disclaimers that the author is not an investment expert. The author apparently has no background other than having read a lot of other books on investing or financial planning. I would recommend doing that as well and skipping this one.
I have a correction to make to my original review. The author does give an outline of his 3-step process for "survival". He stuffs it at ht back of the book in the "Wrapping up" section at the end of the book. Are you ready for it? Here it is...
step 1: Cut your expenses and debt
    step 2: Increase your income
step 3: Make a wide range of foreign currency and income producing investments
The author spends more time discussing step 3 tactics. That seems like most of what he has any knowledge of that isn't superficial or glibly general to offer. His suggestions for steps 1 and 2 are cliches to anybody who has had even the most remote contact with personal financial planning literature of any kind. Go buy Dave Ramsey's and other books if you want hard information on how to do these things.
A very useful book just on time!
This book is an eye opener for me. It has so much good information that I think everybody should read it. It is loaded with interesting facts and it can be a life saver for anyone that takes it's lessons to heart and learns from the mistakes of the past. Thank you very much to the author for making this wisdom available to the public. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about withstanding economic chaos and getting out on top!
    Try something else
I think it is a better bet to read Stock investing simplifiedStock Investing Simplified[...] or Security Analysis. Read these books for a more fundamentally sound analysis.

    Publisher's Summary:
Your future. Our future. The future of companies, the marketplace, and society.
According to futurists Rolf Jensen and Mika Aaltonen, we are currently "between dreams". We've managed to achieve many of our material goals, only to face ever-growing global competition in an ever-slowing economy. Here's the good news: With the rise of social media and online resources, consumers are growing more powerful. Individuals are exploring more options. And smart businesses are discovering more ways to appeal to this powerful new community.
Welcome to The Renaissance Society. A world-class network of ordinary people who are changing the way companies and communities interact, they are the future - and they are us. This forward thinking audiobook guides you through tomorrow's hottest trends to help you:
Jensen and Aaltonen's razor-sharp predictions offer a much-needed headsup - and a major head-start - for your future success. You'll explore revolutionary ways in which the individual's role will shift from consumer to creator - much like it did during the European Renaissance. You'll find out why learning will become the world's largest industry and how services will become the 21st-century's biggest growth market. You'll see a powerful shift in the concept of ownership, the role of employees within a company, and the role of companies in society. Most important, you'll be able to turn these fascinating predictions into real-world opportunities for decades to come.
In The Renaissance Society, everybody matters. Each and every one of us has the power to reshape the future of our companies. To reignite the passion of our communities. And to restore our faith in ourselves, our dreams, and our limitless potential for growth.

Finally the long awaited update of "The Dream Society" has come!
This new book by Rolf Jensen and Mika Aaltonen represents a milestone in the journey to unveil our future.
It takes ground from the previous fundamental work by Jensen alone, "The Dream Society", that in 1999 together with "The Experience Economy" by Pine & Gilmore, foresaw the evolution from the services economy to the current experience-based one.
"The Renaissance Society" develops three potential future scenarios, out of which the one that gives name to the book is clearly the most intriguing and full of hope for our sons.
A must read for any professional forecaster or futurologist and a worthy addtion to everybody's cultural background.
Back to the future with Rolf Jensen and Mika Aaltonen
Rolf Jensen gave us the bestseller The Dream Society from 1999 (re-issued now). The message is that we as consumers are buying stories first, second products. Now he is back together with the noted futurist Mika Aaltonen from Finland. What is the message this time? A second renaissance is coming to us in the West. We don't trust big national institutions any more. (Supported by reliable figures to prove it). The internet and social media has created a horizontal dialogue never seen before in history. On top of that we are experiencing a third industrial revolution. The authors suggest an intriguing parallel to the first renaissance and conclude that the top-down hierarchy will disappear - more or less.

  • From Here to Economy Audiobook by Todd G. Buchholz

    Title: From Here to Economy
Subtitle: A Shortcut to Economic Literacy
    Author: Todd G. Buchholz
    Narrator: Christopher Kipiniak
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-03-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
What is the GDP, and what does it mean? Why does the stock market go down when interest rates go up? What causes a dreaded recession? Economics impacts everyone's life, but most people take on faith what they read in the newspaper. Now, for anyone who doesn't know much about economics, noted economist Todd Buchholz explains it all simply and clearly. With refreshing wit and irreverence, Buchholz takes listeners by the hand and reveals the basic rules behind everything from food prices to trade deficits. Instead of complicated graphs and charts he uses examples from contemporary life and popular culture to demonstrate the principles at work. By cutting through the arcane musings of academicians, the jargon of analysts and advisors, and the rhetoric of politicians, he gives us a precise and accessible understanding of economic ideas, actions, and consequences as they actually exist in the here and now.
Here are some of the heretofore unintelligible ideas he helps us to understand: what causes or combats inflation, and why it is so feared; what moves stocks and bonds up and down - and how to invest wisely and safely; whether it is good or bad to "protect" America from foreign goods - and what happens when we do and when we don't; what exactly Social Security is, and whether government spending is good or bad - and how dangerous the national debt is or isn't.
In today's confusing economic climate, it has never been more important for everyone from homemakers to small-business owners to individual investors and middle managers to understand the forces at work.
    Editorial Reviews:
In his introduction Todd G. Buchholz says that he wants to "add sizzle" to economics; people generally think of the subject, like bad steak, as "dry, tough, and tasteless". To do this he incorporates pop culture references and is down to earth, even admitting the fact that the usefulness of the history of economic thought is mainly merely sounding impressive at cocktail parties. Christopher Kipiniak delivers this well-structured breakdown of economics like an expert in the field whos found himself in a more casual atmosphere. He provides an informative but easy-to-listen-to experience of Buchholzs in-depth analysis of macro- and microeconomics, international and personal business, investment and trade - as well as a bit about economic history for those cocktail parties.
    Members Reviews:
    Good purchase
I read a good deal of economics for fun in my spare time (as you can imagine I'm the life of every party). I moved past the basic level this book is aimed at years ago, but nevertheless I still like to pick up a primer on basic economics every now and then just to round things out. This book has been on my Amazon wish list for a decade; where I first saw or heard about it I don't even remember it. Since it is now at a penny used + shipping, I figured what the heck.
It started off a little slow, but by the second chapter the humor took off. The author has a good sense of how to make this stuff interesting, to the limited degree that's even possible with economics (I think it was Ezra Pound who said that he knows of no subject other more difficult to arise an interest in people).
All in all a satisfying purchase.

  • The Undercover Economist Strikes Back Audiobook by Tim Harford

Title: The Undercover Economist Strikes Back
    Author: Tim Harford
    Narrator: Cameron Stewart, Gavin Osborn
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-29-13
    Publisher: Hachette Audio UK
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 20 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
A million listeners bought The Undercover Economist to get the lowdown on how economics works on a small scale, in our everyday lives. Since then, economics has become big news. Crises, austerity, riots, bonuses - all are in the headlines all the time. But how does this large-scale economic world really work? What would happen if we cancelled everyone's debt? How do you create a job? Will the BRIC countries take over the world?
Asking - among many other things - what the future holds for the Euro, why the banks are still paying record bonuses, and where government borrowing will take us, in The Undercover Economist Strikes Back, Tim Harford returns with his trademark clarity and wit to explain what's really going on - and what it means for us all.
    Members Reviews:
    useful even for PhD economist
This is not one of those disgraceful economics textbooks, which present macro theories as some kind of truths or laws of nature. It is quite a comprehensive and coherent review of most important macro topics, which clearly hilights the complexity and uncertainty about how economy works and at the same time helps to form opinion about various macroeconokics issues.
The perfect book for that business flight
The best teaching comes from telling stories - stories about human feats, challenges which were overcome, where the art of the possible conquers all. Tim Harford in his lectures and his writing does this all the time - putting a human face on problem solving.
This audiobook is for you if:
    You consider yourself to be a serious person, concerned about the way of the world, unhappy about lives being wasted through deprivation, poverty and idleness;
    You enjoy listening to the output of BBC Radio 4 (and particularly to the BBC Today programme, "More or Less"and new programmes like "The Philosopher's Arms");
I wondered when I bought it why it needed two narrators when novels etc can make do with just one. But the interchange of question and answer, explaining matters by the use of Socratic debate, really demands two voices and Cameron Stewart and Gavin Osborne do it justice as narrators. Tim never uses jargon unnecessarily and it is always explained in simple terms.
This is the idea audiobook to listen to after you turn left at the top of the stairs and settle into your aircraft seat. Get the steward to fix you a long drink, let everyone else watch the highly edited action movies and chill out to a tour de force. It will teach you that the modern macroeconomist needs to be a renaissance man - and that is a really good takeaway.
The Only Thing Missing is Tim's Delivery
This is a truly wonderful book.
It is funny, yet clear. It breaks up complicated ideas, and makes them understandable- with the clever use of ridiculous analogies and preposterous scenarios.
My only gripe is this- why didn't Tim Harford read it himself? I love his delivery in 'More or Less'- his radio show on Radio 4. He has great comic timing, and is a wizard at the straight faced presentation of the absurd. Cameron Stewart was not bad, but Tim H would have excelled, and I couldn't help subconsciously translating the lines spoken by the CS into TH's voice.
But if that's my only complaint, then you haven't got much to worry about.

    Title: Book of Obituaries
    Subtitle: The Economist

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 20 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The obituaries that appear in The Economist are remarkable because of the unpredictable selection of people to be written about, the surprising lives they lead - but also for the style in which the obituary is written. The selection for this book ranges far and wide, including Jean Bedel Bokassa and Pope Jean Paul II, Pamela Harriman and Harry Oppenheimer, Akio Morita and J. K. Galbraith, Jean Baudrillard and Syd Barrett, Estee Lauder and Hunter Thomson, Bip (the legendary mime artist Marcel Marceau) and even Alex the African Grey (science's best known parrot).
    Editorial Reviews:
Lucky Scott raises the already entertaining collection of obituaries to new heights with her lively performance of The Economist: Book of Obituaries. This work is a brilliant collaboration between editors Keith Colquhoun and Ann Wroe, who have compiled a volume of the most noteworthy obituaries that appeared in the English newspaper The Economist, between the years 1994 and 2008.
Looking to give extra context to the last remembrances of a wide range of individuals, Book of Obituaries is well worth a listen. Learn about the lives of famed persons like Princess Diana, Bip, and Hunter Thompson. Or the less well-known, but equally interesting obituaries of an American gangster, a singing psychic, and the inventor of instant noodles.
    Critic Reviews:
"The wit is wicked, in the best sense of that ambiguous word, but it is never cruel, and always bang on; as its victims, after serving their million-odd years in Purgatory, would ruefully have to agree." (The Spectator)
