  • Successful Strategy Execution Audiobook by Michel Syrett

    Title: Successful Strategy Execution
    Author: Michel Syrett
    Narrator: Gordon Griffin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-09-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Strategy-to-performance gaps foster a culture of under-performance. Unrealistic plans create the expectation throughout the organisation that plans simply will not be fulfilled. This book shows how to overcome such failings and implement strategy effectively.
Common failings include: Companies rarely track their performance against long-term plans - less than 15% of companies make it a regular practice to go back and compare the business' results with the performance forecast for each business unit in its prior years' strategic results. Results rarely meet projections - when companies do track performance, it rarely matches the prior years' projection. The consequence is year-after-year of under-performance relative to the original plan. A lot of value is lost in translation - a combination of poor communications, misapplied resources, limited accountability and lack of information creates an in-built strategy-to-performance gap.
    Editorial Reviews:
When a company underperforms relative to its projections, does the blame lie with the companys performance or in unrealistic projections? This is the question answered in Successful Strategy Execution by business writer and lecturer Michel Syrett.
Using examples from various industries, Syrett runs through core concepts of execution strategies (including innovation) and shows how performances are rarely compared to long-term plans.
Syrretts book features both the listenability of a work of journalism and the substance of an academic paper. Narrator Gordon Griffin gives a crisp reading with his natural English accent.
    Members Reviews:
    Mostly elementary, nothing revolutionary.
A decent "text-book" type strategy execution reading material. Covers most of the elementary execution concepts. Not too bad if you haven't read other similar books. Nothing revolutionary or too insightful for avid readers.

  • How Money Walks Audiobook by Travis H. Brown
Please open https://hotaudiobook.com ONLY on your standard browser Safari, Chrome, Microsoft or Firefox to download full audiobooks of your choice for free.
    Title: How Money Walks
Subtitle: How $2 Trillion Moved Between the States, and Why it Matters
    Author: Travis H. Brown
    Narrator: Ron Ron Hippe
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-21-13
    Publisher: Cedar House Audio Productions
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Between 1995 and 2010, millions of Americans moved between the states, taking with them over $2 trillion in adjusted gross incomes. Two trillion dollars is equivalent to the GDP of California, the ninth largest in the world. It's a lot of money.
Some states, like Florida, saw tremendous gains ($86.4 billion), while others, like New York, experienced massive losses ($58.6 billion). People moved, and they took their working wealth with them. The question is, why?
Why did Americans move so much of their income from state to state? Which states benefited and which states suffered? And why does it matter? Using official statistics from the IRS, How Money Walks explores the hows, whys, and impact of this massive movement of American working wealth.
Consider these facts; between 1995 and 2010:
Money and people moved from high-tax states to low-tax ones. And the tax that seemed to matter the most? The personal income tax. The states with no income taxes gained the greatest wealth, while the states with the highest income taxes lost the most.
Why does this matter? Because the robust presence of working wealth is the leading indicator of economic health. The states that gained working wealth are growing and thriving. The states that lost working wealth lost their most precious cargo: Their tax base. And the consequences are dire: stagnation, deterioration, and an economic death spiral as they continue to raise taxes and lose people, businesses, and working wealth. The numbers don't lie.

The go-to tax/policy book for the 21st century!
Where does How Money Walks rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
The content was fantastic, and really presented a data-driven dialog. Ron Hippe, the narrator, did a great job bringing life to the text.
What other book might you compare How Money Walks to and why?
Freakonomics - The author Travis H. Brown is able to create a compelling and interesting narrative, all the while discussing data.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Florida has gained over $86 Billion in net AGI from 1990-2010...just for being Florida (0% income tax helps).
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
How $2 Trillion moved across the States.
    Any additional comments?
Great book for anyone looking into fiscal policy, economics, taxes, or if you are just a data wonk like me :)

  • Can't Buy Me Like Audiobook by Doug Levy, Bob Garfield

    Title: Can't Buy Me Like
Subtitle: How Authentic Customer Connections Drive Superior Results
    Author: Doug Levy, Bob Garfield
    Narrator: Lee Han
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-11-13
    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Todays brands face an apparent choice between two evils: continue betting on their increasingly ineffective advertising or put blind faith in the supposedly mystical power of social media, where likes stand in for transactions and a mass audience is maddeningly elusive. There has to be a better way... As Lennon and McCartney wrote a half century ago, money cant buy you love. But in todays world, where people have become desensitized - even disillusioned - by ad campaigns and marketing slogans, that maxim needs an update: Money cant even buy you like. Thats because weve entered the Relationship Era, where the only path for businesses seeking long-term success is to create authentic customer relationships. Not through hip social media promotions, viral videos, or blizzards of micro-targeted online ads. Those tactics, which simply disguise old ways of thinking with new technology, just dont work in the long run. So what does work in this bewildering new era? Honesty. Transparency. Shared values. A purpose beyond profit. Sure you still need a high-quality product or service to offer, but thats not enough. Now that people can easily discover everything thats ever been said about your brand, you cant manipulate, seduce, persuade, flatter or entertain them into loyalty. You have to treat them like flesh-and-blood human beings, not abstract consumers or data points on a spreadsheet. It may sound like the woo-woo language of self-help books and inspirational wall posters. But as Garfield and Levy show in this audiobook, its the deadly serious reality of business in the 2010s. Its why General Motors abandoned its $10 million annual budget for Facebook ads, and why some brands have hurt themselves badly on social media by nagging, interrupting, abusing and generally ticking off their customers. Blending powerful new research, fascinating examples and practical advice, Garfield and Levy show how any company can thrive in the Relationship Era.
    Critic Reviews:
This is a fabulous book that describes a revolutionary new vision for marketing, the Relationship Era, based on purpose, authenticity, trust and care. Written in an easy-to-read style and full of interesting stories, this audiobook is both inspiring and fun. I give it my highest recommendation. (John Mackey, founder and co-CEO,
    Whole Foods)

    Author: Don Holbrook
    Narrator: Brian Daniel Young
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-04-13
    Publisher: Don Holbrook
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The economic chaos that has created so much destruction of wealth for regular Americans is far from over. This book examines problems and possible solutions within national, international, and local realms that will help us navigate these times and set a course toward calmer waters. While some clamor for more taxes to cover our government's programs, The Next America shows how we can restructure our tax code so it positively affects all aspects of our communities: Education, businesses, innovation, political transparency, environmental issues, investments, and more. Concerned citizens and economic players alike will be inspired and motivated to act to reestablish the American Dream during this transitional time.

Boring political statements masked as wisdom
Would you try another book from Don Holbrook and/or Brian Daniel Young?
    Not likely.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Leave out the political and religious assertions as to cause and effect.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Brian Daniel Young?
The narrator seem OK, but the way it was narrated came across as "computer-like" vs human.
    Religous
Would you try another book from Don Holbrook and/or Brian Daniel Young?
    No
Has The Next America turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Brian Daniel Young?
    Yeah
    Any additional comments?
This book is a lot more about religion, politics and philosophy then the title would imply. Almost 2 hours in I hardly heard anything specific about the American economy. I would recommend this book if your a Christian Libertarian looking to reenforce your world view or I suppose if your an Atheist Socialist looking to see what the other side is preaching.
While I didn't hate the book, I didn't like the narrator very much. I turned the thing off when he started talking about how America was established by the founding fathers as a Christian nation and would forever remain one. That bummed me out when I considered that it was also founded as a racist nation and the thought crossed my mind that maybe this guy didn't believe in progress.
    Talking Out of His Rear
I'm not too keen on Don Holbrook's ideas in "The Next America." Some of his ideas are great, like regarding education, but most of his ideas are so far fetch that they will never come true. You can't rebuild America base on theories. There has to be action, reaction, and leadership and Don Holbrook is just talking out of his rear without any examples.
I almost couldn't finish this one. At one point, I had to stop and listen to something else because Brian Daniel Young speaks in waves. He is the worst reader that I have yet to listen to. Avoid his voice as much as possible. His vocal folds is poison.
    Absurd
What would have made The Next America better?
Holbrook not contradicting himself constantly! In part 1 he says the government patronizes citizens telling us we're too dumb to understand complicated subjects, so we should just trust them and also that the government should force conversion of all retirement funds, including pensions, to individually-managed accounts.

  • Marketplace 3.0 Audiobook by Hiroshi Mikitani

    Title: Marketplace 3.0
Subtitle: Rewriting the Rules for Borderless Business
    Author: Hiroshi Mikitani
    Narrator: Jun Naito
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-26-13
Publisher: HighBridge, a division of Recorded Books
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Hiroshi Mikitani, founder of e-commerce giant Rakuten, has seen the next battleground in the fight for the future of the Internet. Today's major e-commerce players are quietly building borderless platforms that are overturning the global brick-and-mortar model, and changing the way local businesses think about their customers. But is this good or bad? Rejecting the zero-sum model practiced by some global retailers, who view the Internet purely as a facilitator of speed and profit, Mikitani argues for an alternate model that benefits vendors, customers, and communities alike by empowering players at every step in the process. He shows why emphasizing collaboration over competition, customization over top-down control, and long-term growth over short-term revenue is by far the best use of the Internet's power.
Rakuten is already pioneering this new model, and Marketplace 3.0 offers colorful examples of its success in Japan and around the world. Marketplace 3.0 is an exciting new vision for global commerce, from a company that's challenging all the accepted wisdom.
    Critic Reviews:
"Japanese executives aren't known for bucking the establishment. Hiroshi Mikitani is a rare exception at a time when rebellion is most needed." (Bloomberg BusinessWeek)

    Language: English
    Release date: 02-26-13
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The greatest change in business history is happening right now. What are you going to do about it?
    The tilt (tilt):
    1. The shift in business and economic power from countries of the north to the fast-developing markets and economies of the south - not only China, India and Brazil, but also the Middle East and parts of Africa. 2. The result of unstoppable forces, including the volatile global financial system, digitization, the rise of state capitalism and a new global middle class that is both youthful and urban- forces by which industries and economies rapidly emerge and change the global playing field. 3. A call to abandon old assumptions and rules of thumb about the North and South, and the opening of mega-opportunities for leaders who learn to see the world not just from the vantage point of New York but also from that of Beijing, Mumbai, Singapore, and Sao Paulo.
Ram Charan has spent more time anyone else on the ground observing and analyzing the tilt. Here he gives business leaders the tools to detect trends that cut across not just industries but also countries, rethink the economic and business principles they rely on, and adapt to the speed of innovation and unprecedented needs of the new global economy. With Global Tilt, he provides the essential, practical playbook for strategizing and succeeding in a tilted world.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ram is a gifted visionary who is above all a pragmatist. He knows that the pathway from the possible to reality is not linear, but one of applied imagination and strategic leaps. In Global Tilt, Ram teaches us that unlearning is essential to new learning, with many examples that will both inspire and educate even the most seasoned business leader." (Inge Thulin, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, 3M Company)
A timely and insightful call to establishment leaders to rethink the world business equation. Charan encourages leaders of the North to strategize and operate with a different and more realistic mind set if they are to counter the thrust of exuberant, ever more affluent and confident leaders of the South. A must read for those seeing a more growth orientated future. (Larry Bossidy, former Chairman and CEO of Honeywell)
Global Tilt is more than just a crisp and insightful look at the North to South power-shift taking place in the world today. Its a brilliantly crafted managerial and strategy blueprint for leaders of businesses and organizations that are trying to make sense of this dynamic new landscape. This is Ram and his sharp strategic acumen at his very best. No CEOs library should be without it. (Muhtar Kent, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of The Coca-Cola Company)

    Must read often
This is one of those books (and there are very few) that I will have to read over and over so that it sinks deep. I love it. I just wish there was more to it. It's a great intro to the topic but left me wanting more, after the diagnosis, now what? What do I do? I recognize everything about myself in what you have written..... What now? Please do a follow up with step by step tips.
I saw myself in many of the characters
Would you consider the audio edition of The Money Mirror to be better than the print version?
I only have the audio edition and I'm very satisfied with it.
What did you like best about this story?
This book talks very clearly about the various money stories women have been taught to believe. They simply aren't true. As I listened to the examples of how those money myths have tripped up women who are savvy in every other way, I saw myself and understood why I made the mistakes I made.
What does Bernadette Dunne bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I love being read to, and Bernadette did a good job capturing both the factual and the humorous.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I had an extreme realization of the BS I've been led to believe about women and money. I laughed, and I'm still having some ah-ha moments.
    Any additional comments?
I gave the story four stars instead of five because the book was written in the 90s and some of the information was a bit dated. In fact, I hesitated buying the book at first because of that. However, the subject of women and money plus the title were intriguing enough that after thinking about it for a few days I decided to get it.
