    Publisher's Summary:
Learn about trade embargoes with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Trade embargoes are a form of economic sanction that can be used against another nation.
A trade embargo restricts trade with a nation. This may involve banning the import and export of only a few goods, such as armaments, or may encompass a wider range of goods. Embargoes are usually employed to apply pressure to a nation that has or will engage in actions undesirable to the body applying the sanction. Simply put, they are an economic means of applying political pressure. They are a common method for forwarding foreign policy and for enforcing international law. When applied as such, they are often the first sanction applied against an offending nation where subsequent sanctions may lead towards physical conflict.
Embargoes and other economic sanctions have been used throughout history to varying degrees. During the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, France embargoed most European trade with Britain. During this time, America also embargoed trade with both England and France after these nations attempted to prevent America's trade with the other. The American Embargo Act of 1807, however, was more damaging to America's own economy. It was lifted and eventually replaced with a trade embargo on England alone. This precipitated the War of 1812 between America and England.

The World Bank is an international financial institution of the UN whose purpose is the alleviation of poverty through providing leveraged loans and technical assistance to the worlds poorest countries. The World Bank was created at the Bretton Woods Conference in 1944 with the primary role of financing the post-war reconstruction of European and Asian countries devastated in WWII. Today the World Bank consists of the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA) which form part of the five institutions which make up the World Bank Group. The World Bank Group plays a leading coordination role in international economic affairs due to it being a multilateral institution with extensive experience and partnerships with countless UN agencies, aid agencies, NGOs and national, regional and local governments.
The IBRD, the original institution of the World Bank, is a triple A rated financial institution which provides loans, guarantees and analytical and advisory services to middle-income and creditworthy low-income countries. These countries represent 70% of the worlds poor. The Bank uses its triple A credit rating to source funds from the worlds financial markets and provides these at a small mark-up to qualifying countries for approved projects. While these medium-term, usually 10 year, loans are substantially lower than those in the private sector they are often attached with strict conditions and monitoring programs.

    Publisher's Summary:
Learn about subprime lending with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Originally, the term subprime lending described any loan that charged less than the prime, or base, rate of interest. This definition, however, has changed over the last 20 years to mean quite the opposite. Now subprime refers not to the interest rate charged, but to the credit worthiness of the loan taker. That is, subprime lending is any form of high risk loan.
While the phrase subprime lending is typically used in reference to mortgages, the principle can be extended to any type of loan. This includes car loans, personal finance, and credit cards. It should be noted that there is no explicit cut-off between what classifies a prime loan from a subprime. Instead subprime indicates a broad range of loans that charge higher rates of interest to compensate the greater level of associated risk.
Traditionally, loans were only issued to those people that had a strong history of repaying debts or were already in a financially stable position and hence were perceived to be of low risk. This practice left a lot of room for any who had poor or no credit history. To combat this deficiency, subprime loans were introduced as a way to extend credit to individuals who would not otherwise have been able to borrow money. Not only did this allow those people to improve their credit record, it also opened up a new market for high risk, high reward investment securities.

    Editorial Reviews:
Few terms strike as much fear into the heart of the American financial system as the term subprime lending. A key culprit in the Great Recession following 2008s global financial collapse, subprime lending has also spelled ruin for many thousands of individual households across the country. As a matter of cultural literacy, this is a term that any American ought to understand. This audiobook will do the trick in seven minutes and 49 seconds.
Produced by the popular iMinds money division, the language used is clear and to the point. The narration, by Emily Sophie Knapp, is pleasant and equally no-nonsense.

    Publisher's Summary:
Learn about Arbitrage with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series.
Arbitrage is defined as attempting to profit by exploiting price differences of identical or similar financial instruments between two or more markets. The difference between the two market prices is the profit or spread. The term is usually used to describe transaction involving financial instruments such as stock, bonds, commodities, currencies and derivatives. A person or institution that practices arbitrage is known as an arbitrageur.
When used academically, arbitrage refers to transactions in which there is no negative cash flow at any stage, and at least one state where there is a positive cash flow. Put simply, it is the prospect of making a profit without any risk or cost for the investor. However, when the term is used in real world situations, it may refer to the expected profit, as there is always some risk and execution time involved in arbitrage transactions. While the concept is risk free in theory, the complexity and volatility of real world markets make the process more perilous than it initially sounds.

    Editorial Reviews:
This is a clear explanation of the risks and potential rewards of arbitrage, with an emphasis on the many ways the practice can go wrong. Performer Emily Sophie Knapp narrates in clean, if somewhat flat, tones as she describes both the academic theory of arbitrage (in which such transactions are risk-free) and the real-world complexities that make the attempt to profit through arbitrage transactions so perilous for all but the most lightning-quick. A recommended listen for those who need a quick, concise, and targeted explanation of the concept.

    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Learn about Reverse Swaps with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. A reverse swap is a secondary swap agreement entered into by a party to an existing swap contract. The secondary swap will offset, or reverse, the position held in the original agreement. In other words, it is a new swap with the exact opposite terms to a pre-existing swap contract is made. A reverse swap can therefore simply be thought of as the undoing, without the cancellation, of a previous swap agreement.
However, the reverse swap need not be executed with the same counter-party to the original as it is a completely new contract and thereby allows one party to pull out from a swap at no extra cost, even if the counter-party intends to keep their investment position.
The reason for and method of executing a reverse swap will depend on the nature of the original agreement. Swaps are a type of derivative that, as the name suggests, involves the trading of financial benefits between two counter-parties. These benefits depend on the underlying asset in the swap agreement. Most commonly bond repayments are used, though equity and commodities based swaps are also actively traded. Note that the underlying assets themselves are not exchanged, simply the rights to the benefits derived from the asset. For example, these may be repayments on a bond or dividends from stock.
Swap contracts can be made for any of a number of reasons: to hedge against changes in interest rates, commodity values, foreign exchange, or some other uncertainty; to conversely speculate for capital gain; or to receive benefits from otherwise inaccessible assets.

Learn about Financial Regulation with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Financial regulation, simply put, is the supervision and control of the financial system and entities within it by a government body. It is deemed necessary to prevent abuses or failures within financial systems that affect the public or the stability of the system itself. Regulation is carried out differently in countries around the world. For example, in America there are a number of regulatory bodies for different parts of the financial market, while in the UK there is only one. The US regulatory system is also very rules-based, while the UK system is based more on principals.
Adam Smith, an 18th century Scottish philosopher, described an invisible hand that directs free markets. It became a lasting image in economic theory. By pursuing their own self-interests, individual market participants engage in the production and exchange of goods and services to the benefit of the whole. This is the invisible hand that guides individuals. It leads the market to operate efficiently and in service of the public good.
While Smiths image suggests that a perfect market would function without any oversight, realities of the market require government regulation to ensure economic welfare.

    Publisher's Summary:
Learn about securitization with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Securitization as a financial term has evolved over the decades, as different methods and products have developed from the process. At a basic level, securitization is the process of taking an illiquid asset, or a group of relatively homogenous assets, and through financial engineering, transforming them into a security. The assets are pooled together and repackaged into a single security, which is then sold to investors. The security entitles them to the incoming cash flows and other economic benefits generated by the asset pool.
Securitization originated in the late 1980s in the form of both mortgage backed securities and asset backed securities. There are many similarities between securitization and secured lending, or asset backed lending. In secured lending, the lender requires the borrowing firm to commit specific assets of that firm as security or collateral for the loan. A securitization differs from this process in several ways. In a securitization, the cash flow generated by the asset pool can be employed to support investing in other securities. Rather than relying on the sale or the use of current assets as a guarantee to finance their investment, a firm can use the receivable income expected from its current assets to generate income immediately. The end result of the securitization is that a firm can obtain funding without having to borrow anything, but through the sale of income receivable assets to investors.

Learn about Foreign Currency Exchange with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Foreign currency exchange is the transaction of monetary business between two different countries. When conducting any business, participants must eventually be paid in the currency of their own country, regardless off whether the business is domestic or international. As a result, the exchange of foreign currency is an integral part of international business.A key aspect to foreign currency exchange is the rate of exchange between two different currencies. The exchange rate is the value of foreign currency that can be obtained with one unit of the domestic currency. It is in a constant state of change. Economic growth can lead to a rise in the exchange rate. High interest rates can attract foreign investment, causing a rise in the exchange rate. Conversely, if inflation is higher domestically than overseas, increasing prices and falling demand for exports can lead to a fall in the exchange rate. This makes foreign currency exchange very complicated. iMinds will hone your financial knowledge with its insightful series looking at topics related to Money, Investment and Finance.. whether an amateur or specialist in the field, iMinds targeted fast knowledge series will whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

As any international traveler has experienced firsthand, foreign currency exchange can be a tricky business. Why, exactly, does one dollar not equal one British pound? Why does will one dollar yield approximately 30 Romanian lei at the airport in Bucharest? And who sets these rates? Learn about Leveraged Buyouts with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Leveraged buyouts originated in the early 1960s. It is also known as a hostile takeover, a highly-leveraged transaction, or a bootstrap transaction. In effect, it is a tactic through which control of a corporation is acquired by buying up a majority of their stock using borrowed money. Typically, an investor or financial sponsor acquires a controlling interest in a company's equity. A significant percentage of the purchase price here is financed through borrowing, which is termed leverage. The assets of the acquired company are used as collateral for the borrowed capital and sometimes the acquiring companys assets are used as well. Once control is acquired, the company is often made private, so that the new owners have more leeway to do what they want with it. This may involve splitting up the corporation and selling pieces of it for a high profit. In some cases, it may even liquidate its assets and dissolve the corporation itself.iMinds will hone your financial knowledge with its insightful series looking at topics related to Money, Investment and Finance.. whether an amateur or specialist in the field, iMinds targeted fast knowledge series will whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

In 1919, Henry Ford took a huge loan in order to buy back all existing public shares of the Ford Motor Company. This is an early example of what would come to be called a "leveraged buyout", a process whereby company management partners with outside investors to buy its own company back from the public. This practice has become quite common and fits within the business environment called "Mergers and Acquisitions".
Capably narrated by Emily Sophie Knapp and written in a smooth, no-frills, plainspoken style, this eight-minute audiobook will give a financial novice a working understanding of this term and the process it describes.

Learn about Property Securities with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Property securities are interests in property trusts that are listed on the stock exchange. These listed property trusts are known globally as Real Estate Investment Funds, or REITs. They hold portfolios of property assets that consist of large properties that, due to their size and value, could not be bought by average private investors. REITs break these large investments up into smaller units that can be purchased by individuals, investment institutions and managed funds. The trust manages the properties and investment direction and distributes rental income to the investors. Unit holders trade on the stock market where the value of the unit is determined by demand and supply. The economies-of-scale realised by large trusts, the expertise required for successful non-residential investment and the significant funding required to diversify in this type of property result in REITs maintaining a strong dominance in the commercial property market.Created in 1960 by the U.S. Congress, REITs were originally designed to provide access for all income levels to diversified, professionally managed real estate previously reserved for large real estate organisations. While initially showing slow growth, the industry grew dramatically from the early 1990. This was sparked by demand for liquidity from institutional investors recovering from the 1990 property bubble, who traditionally held direct property investments. Since then, REITS have become a mature, sophisticated, highly successful indirect property investment vehicle. Total assets of the REIT industry worldwide increased from $16 billion to $568 billion from 1992 to 2008.
