    Title: Macrowikinomics
Subtitle: Rebooting Business and the World
Author: Don Tapscott, Anthony D. Williams
    Narrator: Alan Sklar
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 20 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-28-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 59 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
In their 2007 best seller Wikinomics, Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams taught the world how mass collaboration was changing the way businesses communicate, compete, and succeed in the new global marketplace. But much has changed in three years, and the principles of wikinomics are now more powerful than ever.
In this new age of networked intelligence, businesses and communities are bypassing crumbling institutions. We are altering the way our financial institutions and governments operate; how we educate our children; and how the health care, newspaper, and energy industries serve their customers.
In every corner of the globe, businesses, organizations, and individuals alike are using mass collaboration to revolutionize not only the way we work but how we live, learn, create, and care for each other. You'll meet such innovators as:
Once again backed by original research, In this new age of networked intelligence, businesses and communities are bypassing crumbling institutions. We are altering the way our financial institutions and governments operate; how we educate our children; and how the health care, newspaper, and energy industries serve their customers. Once again backed by original research, Tapscott and Williams provide vivid, new examples of organizations that are successfully embracing the principles of wikinomics.
    Critic Reviews:
"MacroWikinomics connects the big picture of business, culture and society with what is really going on in the trenches of the new digital world. Don Tapscott and Anthony Williams re-affirm their authority by offering facts in the style of demographers and by storytelling in the manner of acute social observers. Leaders of the future must take their lessons on co-creation and authenticity to heart." (Brian Fetherstonhaugh, Chairman and CEO, OgilvyOne)
    Members Reviews:
    dynamic, indeed
I got Macrowikinomics to learn about recent trends in social development but I think I fell for the hype. I got a lot of business buzzphrases ("interactive web pages"? How many websites are not interactive?) and fluff around some interesting background information on organizations that I was already familiar with. A decent, but nearly-outdated and overly optimistic assesment of the networked age.
    Wikinomics Follow-up
Similar to Wikinomics, this book offers the principles of networked intelligent media (collaboration, openness, sharing, integrity, and interdependence) and speculates about the impact of social networking. Tapscott and Williams apply their thinking to green energy, transportation, education, health care, media and government. They accomplish this through anecdotes and illustrations of how that media is being used in the changng economy. I enjoyed this book, but it isn't a great leap beyond the initial Wikinomics. They also devote a lot of space in chapters on green energy and transportation telling the reader how dire the climate situation has become. I have no real problem with that, but I was hoping for more insight into macrowikinomics, per se. Positively, if you have not read the prior book, this book does provide welcome and helpful illustrations of how social media is dramatically changing our economy and lives.

    Language: English
    Release date: 06-15-10

    Publisher's Summary:
How the Masters of the Universe Melted Wall Street Downand Why Theyll Take Us to the Brink Again
How did Wall Street become a self-serving and ultimately destructive profit machine that imploded? Wall Street's real job is to be our "financial utility" - good financial plumbers that funnel capital to companies so the economy can expand and create jobs and also provide the means for individual investors to build portfolios that will increase personal wealth. But Wall Street went haywire and became (in Jon Stewart's words) a "bizarro" place that lost touch with most of America.
Suzanne McGee provides a penetrating and disturbing look at forces that have transformed Wall Street into a risk-taking behemoth that spun out of control and took the economy and millions of 401(k)s down with it. Primary among these forces was "Goldman Sachs envy". The demons that drove Richard Fuld of Lehman Brothers, Stanley O'Neil of Merrill Lynch, and the rest of Wall Street to ever-greater risk were perverse incentives and the illusion that they could make even more money than Goldman Sachs (where $11.6 billion in profits in 2007 led to an average bonus of $660,000). Firsthand reporting from veteran Wall Street journalist McGee provides riveting storytelling and a narrative that will grab both Wall Street insiders and people on "Main Street". She is the perfect guide through the labyrinth that is Wall Street, which now reaches from the actual street to Greenwich-based hedge funds, investment banks, venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, the futures pits of Chicago, and sovereign wealth funds.
    Critic Reviews:
"A timely analysis of why Wall Street came so close to destruction." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    Wasted Read
It says chasing Goldman Sachs but in fact it does not give that much incite into Goldman Sachs during this period of time It talks about all the big investment firms. The Big Short is a much better read about this period in Wall Street. It is divided into two parts, I quit going into the second part.
If you need a book to put you to sleep than this is the one.
    Reg
    Huh? Say again, Suzy.
This book is very flawed. The best part is the dramatis personae at the beginning. McGee keeps referring to the "economy crashing" but never tells us exactly what that means----50% unemployment, 30% interest rates, etc.?
In other words, what is the botrtom line effect on the average Joe whose only connection with WS is a few shares of common and my 401 or pension fund.
Of the nearly 15 books I've listened to regarding the "crisis," this is clearly the biggest waste of time. I agree that "Too Big" and "Big Short" make a lot more sense.
I would short this book & go long on some of the others.
    Tom Brenn
    boring and shallow
Compared to such great books like Too Big to Fail and The Big Short, McGee is out of her league as a writer. The book repeats itself endlessly and worst of all, it is not written from an insider's perspective. It was as if she read Wall Street Journal articles or listened to canned speeches to write the book

Title: War at the Wall Street Journal
Subtitle: Inside the Struggle to Control an American Business Empire
    Author: Sarah Ellison
    Narrator: Judith Brackley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-02-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 26 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
This is a tale about big business, an imploding dynasty, a mogul at war, and a deal that sums up an era of change. The main character, rocked by feuding factions and those who would remake it, is the Wall Street Journal, which affects the thoughts, votes, and stocks of two million readers daily. Sarah Ellison, while at the Journal, won praise for covering the $5-billion acquisition that transformed the pride of Dow Jones and the estimable but eccentric Bancroft family into the jewel of Rupert Murdoch's kingdom.
Going above and beyond her original reporting and the accounts of others, Ellison uses her knowledge of the paper and its people to go deep inside the landmark transaction - and also far beyond it, into the rocky transition when Murdoch's crew tussled with old Journal hands and geared up for battle with the New York Times. With access to all the players, Ellison moves from newsrooms (where editors duel) to estates (where the Bancrofts go at it like the Ewings). She shows Murdoch, finally, for who he is: maneuvering, firing, and undoing all that the Bancrofts had protected.
Here is a superlative account of a deal with reverberations beyond the news, told with the storytelling savvy that transforms big stories into timeless chronicles of American life and power.
    Critic Reviews:
Ellison offers a close look into a raw, aggressive power in international commerce. (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    VERY detailed
Perhaps too much for non-journalists, or those not interested in media studies; I myself work in media, so I found this excellent to understanding the back door dealings that sold the WSJ, those who lost, those who won, the details of the Bancroft family's downfall.
That being said: The painstaking detail in which this is told is a credit to Ellison's journalistic ethics, research, and dogged resolution to eschew sensationalism, but might make it too detailed and too much for non-journalism lovers to handle. An abridged version might be nice for them.
Also, would have loved much more description of the Journal's post-takeover policies for writing and the effect of Murdoch on the content of the paper--the book focuses inordinately on the effects of Murdoch on the editorial board, instead.

  • Cities and the Creative Class Audiobook by Richard Florida

Title: Cities and the Creative Class
    Author: Richard Florida
    Narrator: Mark Boyett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-20-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Cities and the Creative Class gathers in one place for the first time the research leading up to Richard Florida's theory on how the growth of the creative economy shapes the development of cities and regions. In a new introduction, Florida updates this theory and responds to the critics of his 2002 best seller, The Rise of the Creative Class.
The essays that make up Cities then spell out in full empirical detail and analysis the key premises on which the arguments of Rise are based. He argues that people are the key economic growth asset, and that cities and regions can therefore no longer compete simply by attracting companies or by developing big-ticket venues like sports stadiums and downtown development districts. To truly prosper, they must tap and harness the full creative potential of all people, basing their strategies on a comprehensive blend of the "3 Ts" of economic development: Technology, Talent, and Tolerance. Long-run success requires a reinvention of regions into the kind of open and diverse places that can attract and retain talent from across the social spectrum by allowing people to validate their varied identities and to pursue the lifestyles and jobs they choose.
    Critic Reviews:
"Florida and others are changing the American urban agenda. This is a guidebook to the new knowledge-based economy....He mines the best available research to lay out powerful new policy options. No wonder he is in such demand." (Terry Nichols Clark, Professor of Sociology and Coordinator of the Fiscal Austerity and Urban Innovation Project, University of Chicago)

Renewal Can Work, Just Not the Way They Do It
Florida wrote the The Flight of the Creative Class, which became an unexpected hit. This is a follow up that focus more on his data. Id heard others try to explain his argument for a few years, before finally reading the book, and am struck by how much more convincing he is than those who argue on his behalf.
Floridas question is what leads to sustained regional economic advantage. The short answer is creative people, by which he means those who create (at least virtually). This includes engineers, designers, technologist, and many entrepreneurs, as well as artists, but not necessarily highly educated professionals engaged primarily in non-creative work, even if they are highly paid. Apparently dollar for dollar creative work has far more positive externalities than almost anything else. Who would have guessed?
The focus of this book is the question what attracts creative people. The answer seems to be tolerance, first and foremost. In addition cool outdoor spaces seem to be a big secondary factor. And finally, creative people attract other creative people.
This much is only slightly controversial, but the details are explosively so. Of all the factors the Gay Index correlates highest with economic outcomes and the Bohemian Index is a close second. Other highly correlated factors include the Coolness Index, multi-racialism, outdoor recreation, and live music.
Are the future Steve Jobs and Bill Gates of the world, gay bohemians who spend 30 or 40 hours a week mountain climbing and playing in garage bands? Probably not! Florida presents some data to this affect. Rather he claims that they are misfits who are not widely accepted. So it is the tolerance implied by the Gay Index or Bohemian Index that attracts the creative class.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 2000, the total GDP of Earth was $36 trillion. At the start of 2007, it was $70 trillion. Today that growth has gone suddenly and sharply into decline.
John Lanchester travels with a cast of characters - including reckless bankers, snoozing regulators, complacent politicians, predatory lenders, credit-drunk spendthrifts, and innocent bystanders, to understand deeply and genuinely what is happening and why we feel the way we do.
    Critic Reviews:
"A valiant and genuinely amusing attempt to describe how finance came off the rails...written with a good heart and a lively intellectual curiosity. (Independent)
    Members Reviews:
Elegance and charm, jazzing on a well-known theme
I've read several books (Gillian Tett's Fools Gold, Michael Lewis's The Big Short, Gordon Brown's apology..) about the financial crisis, so I can't really say I learnt anything new from John Lanchester. However, I was richly amused and entertained by his whimsical and informal style. His wry wit and colloquial turn of phrase often had me laughing out loud. And it is a story so amazing, so profound and so ongoing (unfortunately) that it bears retelling a few times, in different registers, by different people. Mr Lanchester is a definite outsider. Son of an old fashioned (good/safe) banker, he read English and became a writer. He can take the 'man in the street' perspective, and uses analogies that make the whole episode both accessible and maximally absurd.
Normally I don't like narrators trying to mimic real characters (e.g. the voices of Ronald Reagan and Alan Greenspan), but in this context - a rather theatrical book - it does more or less work. The narrator also manages to personify Mr Lanchester's animated and humorous style.
    essential but witty
This book has tackled a diificult subject and made it interesting and accessible. The author is very knowledgeable but he puts over his knowledge in a very clear and witty way.
I have been telling all my friends about it and I hope it has a well deserved sucess
Clear exposition of the financial crisis
I enjoyed and learnt from this book. It sets out an admirably clear and concise history of the origins of the financial crisis; the author has a knack for explaining things simply, and for the telling analogy in describing such things a financial derivatives - you dont need to be an economist or a mathematician to understand them - and he balances the detail and the big picture very well; some nice touches of humour too. Towards the end of the book he does rather get on his soap box, and his ideas for avoiding similar crises in the future are a bit confusing and contradictory; for example he seems to think that Government could run banks better than bankers, which is more than a tad naive, I think. So four stars rather than five for me.
Narration is excellent; very well paced, which is very important with this sort of book, and nicely varied in tone so you dont get distracted or lose interest.
I listened to this book not long after listening to Michael Lewis' 'The Big Short', also available on Audible.

    Publisher's Summary:
China's hundreds of thousands of businessmen and women are driving the fastest sustained national economic growth rate of any country in world history, even in these troubled times. This makes China both one of the most important locations for new business opportunities and a key component in any global business plan. But no one book has presented the many confusing and intricate levels of the Chinese business environment: the intensity of consumers and businesses aspirations, the sometimes contradictory plans of the government, the contrasting environments of city and town, of coast and inland.
Here, for the first time, Booz China Managing Director Edward Tse parses the Chinese landscape, walking the reader through the Chinese business environment, the effects of Chinese economic power on worldwide business, and how the two mesh and interact. The China Strategy is the only book you'll need to do business in China, with China, or in competition against China.

    Publisher's Summary:
How do fledgling companies make it from idea to multimillion-dollar Internet IPOs? Steve Harmon, whom CBS MarketWatch calls one of Wall Street's top Internet stock analysts, shows how an innovator can convert sparks of imagination into a money-making Internet business.
Harmon describes the Internet environment as "zero gravity", a place where information, communication, and wealth flow up, down, and sideways as in an astronaut's weightless environment. The result is nanosecond commerce - easy, inexpensive, customized - with a market not bound by locale or time.
In this book, Harmon introduces you to leading entrepreneurs and venture capitalists who describe how they built companies in cyberspace. From finding funding to structuring your financing, he provides myriad valuable resources to help you along the way.

    Listing of Statistics
I bought this book to listen to it. It's a bit dated, and I knew that before buying it hoping for good content.
It is a awful audiobook. At least half of the book is the narrator reading charts from the print book. If you want to take in the contents of this book, please for the love of god buy the written book. This book may be ok in its written form, but the audio form isn't worth the time it takes to download it.
Some of the non-statistic stuff is good, but nothing can make good the reading of charts that this audio book is.
    Worst narrater ever
Really bad narrater. Couldn't continue on because I didn't really understand what he is saying.
Not best suited as an audiobook.
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
A lot of numbers and statistics very monotone narrator.

    Any additional comments?
    Warning!
Do not listen to this while driving you may fall asleep!
Half the book is reading out tables
What would have made Zero Gravity better?
I listen to audio books all the time and really enjoy them. However, I couldn't believe this one read out countless tables to me! The introduction was fine but most of the book was made up by the reading out of tables. Surely there is a better way to get the point across? Maybe the author could have explained and commented on their meaning instead.

    Over-dry presentation of immigrant entrepreneurs
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would definitely provide more rousing portraits of immigrants, their families, places of birth, adaptation to destination communities, etc.
What could R. T. Herman and Robert L. Smith have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Since much of the value of the work is in statistics, an accompanying pdf would be useful.
How could the performance have been better?
While it did match the dense, dry the tone of the writing, I still would have liked it to be livelier!
Did Immigrant, Inc. inspire you to do anything?
Explore other works offering more human interest, and a more consolidated view of immigrant entrepreneurs' overall impact.
    Interesting bunch of mini biographies
Where does Immigrant, Inc. rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Around the middle. I was expecting more of an analysis of immigrants' techniques for starting businesses and not as many anectdotal examples. I was hoping for a different spin on entrepreneurism but this wasn't that so I got a little bored towards the end.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Nope. I listened to it commuting and got to the stage where I was waiting for it to end. Dennis Holland read well, it was the content that got a little dry.
    Any additional comments?
This isn't a book for people wanting to learn techniques for starting businesses or wanting tips from other people who've done it. I've listened to better books on starting a business.

The title is "Trading Your Way to Success" but this has nothing to do with trading. Just Greg telling how he built his training business. It was a waste of time and money.
    really bad audio

    Success Principles & Personal Examples
Would you listen to Trading Your Way to Success again? Why?
I liked how Greg mixed personal examples with success principles.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Greg shared life and business experiences, it makes you reflect on your own life.
    Any additional comments?
I recommend the program to anyone who wants some insights on self improvement.
Not what it says on the tin.
The audiobook does make some good points about spurring you to action. But it does not tell you how to 'trade your way to success'.
It is structured around Greg telling his story of how he built his business, teaching others to trade.
Greg's insights, although in my view repeating principles from other authors are interesting.
I would further question Greg's freeness of speech and value of his entrepreneurial advice. From the content of the book he appears to have developed his business from a very privileged position of being very cash rich. I may have misunderstood this (although I don't think I have).
The book is intersting from the perspective of what Greg has done and his insights.
I would not recommend it as a tool to 'Trading your way to success' or building your own business, unless of course you are cash rich and in the business of training others to trade.
