    Love Holter Graham......BUT........
What did you like best about Retribution? What did you like least?
Love Jess from Dance with the Devil, and glad to see him get a story, but I'm very confused...I downloaded this book the day it came out, and listened to it many times, as it was so very different from the other DH books, with the native American theme and all.....
Then, in anticipation of the upcoming "Time Untime" I listened to it again this week, and it was different ...I mean, the end was different.... Much more detail, and I am VERY confused....
What didnt you like about Holter Grahams performance?
He really has no range.... All his characters sound "American" despite the discriptions of their ethnic backgrounds....While, in comparison to Maggie meg reed, carrington macduffie, and (shudder) William Dupree, he's the lessor of all evils, he can't seem to remember that he's done these books before, and doesn't carry through with his characters.... The main discrepancy being Nick, but there are many more....Sin, Zarek, Dev, etc.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Probably, out of morbid curiosity
    Was left hanging ...
Don't get me wrong -- I loved the book, and really enjoy the Dark Hunter series. However, I felt a little let down when the end came, having expected more from the build up of the story. The story of Buffalo, Butterfly, Coyote and Wren was intriguing -- however, I felt in the end as if it was unresolved in the bigger story of the book, with only the disclaimer that more would be expected in time to come.
Also, the main theme of the Dark Hunter books was almost skipped over here, with various forays into the realm, and yet kind of like swiss cheese.

    Title: Amsterdam
    Author: Ian McEwan
    Narrator: Steven Crossley

Length: 4 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-01-11

    Publisher's Summary:
    Man Booker Prize, Fiction, 1998
The best-selling author of Atonement and Enduring Love, Ian McEwan is known as one of contemporary fictions most acclaimed writers. This Booker Prize-winning novel by McEwan finds two men connecting at the funeral of their ex-lover. Distressed by how she was slowly destroyed by an illness, the two make a pact to save each other from enduring such a fate.

A Workaday Work From a Master
I respect Ian McEwan tremendously, and Atonement and Saturday are among my favorite books of all time. Amsterdam, while providing an engaging story and finely-drawn characters, left me a little cold. While I empathized with Clive's struggles to find meaning in his work and to resolve his conflict between self-absorption and separation, and found Molly to be the kind of flame that could draw moths from every corner, the plot seemed to be stretched a bit thin at times.
That said, I think that most of the action is interior, and McEwan delivers enough psychological insight to make this a compelling, if less than memorable, listen.
    Quick and engaging, well-read
I generally prefer classics, with more complex plotting, but for the short form, I found this to be a provocative, well-written, and engaging listen. I listened while packing to move, and the story was intense enough to distract me at times, but not something that needed my full attention. The descriptions of musical composition and of aging were well done; they rounded out the story and gave it richness.
I saw it as a modern fable, so the far-fetched ending didn't bother me. The reader was great. Definitely a worthwhile listen.
    Quite good
A fascinating study of human beings doing what they can do and the consequences of such. Well written and well narrated.
Intriguing concept that doesn't catch fire.
I enjoy McEwan in both audio and written form. Just finished "The Children Act" read by Lindsey Duncan and found it completely absorbing. Amsterdam's summary sounds intriguing, but the work and I failed to engage, even after repeated attempts. Seems uncharacteristically muddy, the characters never individuate and the plot doesn't rise to distinguish from the wordy dialogue. I remain a fan of other McEwan titles.

    Title: The Pale King
    Author: David Foster Wallace
    Narrator: Robert Petkoff
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 19 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-15-11
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 363 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The agents at the IRS Regional Examination Center in Peoria, Illinois, appear ordinary enough to newly arrived trainee David Foster Wallace. But as he immerses himself in a routine so tedious and repetitive that new employees receive boredom-survival training, he learns of the extraordinary variety of personalities drawn to this strange calling. And he has arrived at a moment when forces within the IRS are plotting to eliminate even what little humanity and dignity the work still has.
The Pale King remained unfinished at the time of David Foster Wallace's death, but it is a deeply compelling and satisfying novel, hilarious and fearless and as original as anything Wallace ever undertook. It grapples directly with ultimate questions - questions of life's meaning and of the value of work and society - through characters imagined with the interior force and generosity that were Wallace's unique gifts. Along the way it suggests a new idea of heroism and commands infinite respect for one of the most daring writers of our time.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio.
    Editorial Reviews:
David Foster Wallaces posthumously published The Pale King is a challenging listen. This is made explicit in the introduction from Wallaces editor and friend, Michael Pietsch, who put the novel together from more than 1,000 pages left behind after Wallaces suicide in 2008. The intricate, rambling novel is held together by five men including a character named David Wallace who work at an IRS processing center in Peoria, Illinois in the 1980s. There are forays into tax law, nearly rhapsodic tales of drug use, the ennui of working life, and copious footnotes that are a Wallace trademark.
Robert Petkoff is a reassuring presence as narrator of The Pale King, having voiced other Wallace novels. That history makes Petkoff adept at wrapping his tongue around the stream-of-consciousness writing and its varying moods and emotions. Petkoff has a casual, well-enunciated style that he can bend into arch sarcasm, deadpan humor, and even a robotic-sounding transcription machine. Wallace often breaks the narrative with asides, in this case with tax code information, and Petkoff drops his voice to indicate these pauses before picking up the main storyline again. When Wallace switches to first person, writing as his alter-ego, Petkoff gives him a looser, more energetic voice that one can imagine isnt too far from the late authors own.
The novel might be best summed up in a passage where Wallace describes the chronic worrier Claude Sylvanshine as he transfers to a new IRS office: The whole thing presented such a cyclone of logistical problems and complexities, Sylvanshine was forced to do some thought-stopping merge his own awareness with the panoramic vista. The Pale King is indeed a cyclone of complexities and might require multiple listens to absorb, but Petkoff is to be commended for diving in and bringing an extra layer of cohesion to an often-chaotic novel.
    Critic Reviews:
"One hell of a document and a valiant tribute to the late Wallace. (Publishers Weekly)
"Deeply sad, deeply philosophical. The Pale King will be minutely examined by longtime fans for the reflexive light it sheds on Wallace's oeuvre and his life.

    Publisher's Summary:
Writer and illustrator Daniel Wallace has published stories in various literary magazines. Big Fish is a novel reminiscent of Garrison Keillor and Mark Twain. It is a surprising work, filled with imagination, homespun humor, and hyperbole.

Story after story surfaces in Williams memory, and he shares mythic visions of a fantastic father who was loved by alla man who was the best runner, fisherman, businessman, and adventurer in the world. Big Fish tells these tall tales of Edward Blooms life. Punctuated with his vast repertory of jokes, they set the stage for Edwards final, wonderful transformation.
    Critic Reviews:
"In a plainspoken style dotted with transcendent passages, Wallace mixes the mundane and the mythical. His chapters have the transformative quality of fable and fairy tale, and the novel's roomy structure allows the mystery and lyricism of the story to coalesce." (

    movie was better
the ending in the film was so much better, although a great book. I did enjoy the movie much more and it remains my favorite film
    great story
If you like the movie, you will love the book just as much, I promise you.
A good book that became a great movie
The movie has been a favorite of mine for a few years now and so I thought I'd listen to the book.
The book is pretty good (although not as great as the movie) and is a nice companion to the movie in my opinion. A lot of the things in the book that don't contradict things in the movie can easily be imagined to have happened off-screen in the movie.
I'm probably the rare person that doesn't care much for audiobook readers vocally "acting out" the book, trying to use different voices. I find it to be distracting. I prefer when the readers use more of a "blank tone of voice". But, other than that, I really enjoyed listening to this.
The reading was fantastic. The book isn't
I had to hear this for an essay. The story is interesting but not my cup of tea.
    Go see the movie!!!
    Any additional comments?
I have loved the movie since I first saw it. My compliments to the screenwriter!
The book was disappointingly bad -- dark, disjointed and unreadable.
Save your money and rent the movie instead.

The Series is picking up steam
The first book and the start of this book were a little slow. The author who narrates the story seems to be getting stronger with his voice but still is a bit week. I would like to hear more about the physical and practical challenges he faces every day. But this book is really more about spirituality. I will keep going with the series but I keep thinking if this was Stephen King the whole series would be the length of 1 of his books. Still it is a very easy read and uplifting as well.
    Book Two--
I read Richard Paul Evans' book The Walk without realizing it was the beginning of a five-book series. Then I discovered the rest of the books--I devoured the remaining four, one right after the other.
I highly recommend this series, but I would definitely read them in order.
    Love this series
If you liked The Walk, you will love Miles to Go. I can hardly wait for book 3. We've only made it to Memphis!
    S L O W
Long, tedious, and painful. I guess that is how life can be sometimes. The last five minutes were wonderful and so true. Still wondering if we needed eight long uneventful chapters to get there. I know he left us with a cliffhanger of who the woman was but theres no way Im buying the next book to find out just in case its as long and tedious as that one.
    I'm glad there is more!
I drive a lot for my job and am going through a tough "climb" on my mountain. I enjoy and appreciate Evans's writing and look forward tobhis next book.

    Not Virgin River But Ok
I agree with the other reviewer, this doesn't hold a candle to the Virgin River Series but still a good listen. I don't care for the reader at all. It makes the story very confusing because she uses the same voice for all of the characters and you never know who is talking!! Cute story overall.
    Good story
I liked this book but didn't love it like the Virgin River series. There were just too many characters, too many stories and sometimes it got confusing who was who. The narrator did a great job since she had to have so many voices for all the numerous characters. Maybe it was just me but in the beginning I had a hard time keeping up it gets better about 3/4 way through. Still worth a credit.
    summer in sonoma
I was impressed by the credentials of the author and the opening 5 minutes of the book. However after 49 minutes of listening to what can only be described as boring to puerile, I could take no more.
This is a HUGE favorite stand-alone title
I have read lots of Robyn Carr books, and if you are a fan you will love, love, love this book. It's a stand-alone title, so you don't need to know other books to enjoy this one, so it would be a great first, introductory book to Robyn Carr's style if you don't already know her work.
It features four women who have been friends for a long time and are the same age, but they've reached that point in adulthood where each is dealing with different issues. Financial pressures, still being single, getting the 7 year itch in a marriage, etc.
Anyone can find one or more characters in this book to relate to. I found each of the couples to be very interesting, and especially enjoyed the single pair who met right at the beginning of the book. I'm not going to get into spoiler territory, but I was glad that each of the story lines was resolved to some extent by the end of the book. There are certainly unanswered questions, but that's what life is all about.
I read the book twice prior to purchasing this audio version and I do think that aided in my ability to follow the narration. There is not a significant amount of variation between character voices, which is occasionally confusing to the listener. She is adequate, but I was somewhat disappointed with the quality overall since I was already a big fan of the book.
It's still a great listen. Enjoy!
    Robyn does it again!
Another GREAT listen by Robyn Carr. Have listened to all the Virgin River books and this one is right up there. Good characters, great visuals in Sonoma and you can just feel the wind in your hair while riding the Harley! First book for reader Kate Turnbull, and has the sweet voice almost, (almost) of Therese Plummer. We need more by Ms. Carr and Ms. Turnbull.

    Publisher's Summary:
Sarah Nickerson is like any other career-driven supermom in Welmont, the affluent Boston suburb where she leads a hectic but charmed life with her husband Bob, faithful nanny, and three childrenLucy, Charlie, and nine-month-old Linus.
Between recruiting the best and brightest minds as the vice president of human resources at Berkley Consulting; shuttling the kids to soccer, day care, and piano lessons; convincing her sons teacher that he may not, in fact, have ADD; and making it home in time for dinner, its a wonder this over-scheduled, over-achieving Harvard graduate has time to breathe.
A self-confessed balloon about to burst, Sarah miraculously manages every minute of her life like an air traffic controller. Until one fateful day, while driving to work and trying to make a phone call, she looks away from the road for one second too long. In the blink of an eye, all the rapidly moving parts of her jam-packed life come to a screeching halt.
A traumatic brain injury completely erases the left side of her world, and for once, Sarah relinquishes control to those around her, including her formerly absent mother. Without the ability to even floss her own teeth, she struggles to find answers about her past and her uncertain future.
Now, as she wills herself to regain her independence and heal, Sarah must learn that her real destinyher new, true lifemay in fact lie far from the world of conference calls and spreadsheets. And that a happiness and peace greater than all the success in the world is close within reach, if only she slows down long enough to notice.
    Editorial Reviews:
Wife, mother, and hyper-driven, multitasking Sarah Nickerson, a 37-year-old Harvard Business School grad, is so controlled she limits her crying to five minutes twice a month behind her office desk. She travels to China on business, and still signs permission slips on time. Left Neglected, by Lisa Genova, discerningly chronicles Sarah both before and after a devastating brain injury blots out the left side of her world. Actor Sarah Paulson, always an incandescent force, narrates here with such disarming openness that Left Neglected superficially about a preppy modern mommy of three finding grace through catastrophe gathers enough texture to unfold a richly moving rebirth.
Left Neglected is easy to latch onto, largely because Paulson projects Sarah Nickerson as endearingly insecure and goofy. By pebbling her pre-car crash, pre-head trauma Sarah voice with urgency and strain, Paulson revs up pacing to mirror the choking rhythms of her characters hurried schedule. Yet the recovering Sarah is looser and less uncensored as Paulson unknots her anxious cadences in a gradual fade. We relax around this Sarah who cracks pun-laced jokes with her rehab therapists and grieves as deeply for the skinny jeans she can no longer button at the waist, as having to relearn using the bathroom alone.
While Left Neglected is Sarahs story, Paulson astutely rescues the ensemble players Sarahs jittery, apologetic mother Helen, and her innately decent husband Bob from the fringes. She pitches Bob as honorable and magnetic in his own right, a cool guy whose empathy eventually collapses into panicked resentment as Sarahs lost income capsizes the family finances. Helen, on the other hand, begs to be Sarahs rock, atoning for her indifference the last 30 years. My life can be fully lived with less, Sarah observes, well into her healing journey.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Jan Karon's new series, launched with her New York Times best-selling Home to Holly Springs, thrilled legions of Mitford devotees, and also attracted a whole new set of fans. "Lovely," said USA Today. "Rejoice!" said The Washington Post.
In this second novel, Father Tim and Cynthia arrive in the west of Ireland, intent on researching his Kavanagh ancestry from the comfort of a charming fishing lodge. The charm, however, is broken entirely when Cynthia startles a burglar and sprains her already injured ankle. Then a cherished and valuable painting is stolen from the lodge owners, and Cynthia's pain pales in comparison to the wound at the center of this bitterly estranged Irish family.
In the Company of Others is a moving testament to the desperate struggle to hide the truth at any cost and the powerful need to confess. Of all her winning novels, Jan Karon says this "dark-haired child" is her favorite - a sentiment listeners everywhere are certain to share.
    Members Reviews:
    Disappointed
I have always loved the Father Tim series but I must be listening to a different book than the one others have rated. I'm on chapter 11 and find the story boring; I miss John McDonough, who read the other books. Erik Singer's voice seems too young. I tolerated him in the last book but this is it for me. I may have to try this book again in print form to see if I like it more..
    Good as ever, but....
I was disappointed at the change in reader. I have come to love the voice characterizations and rhythms of John McDonough. If I had not already listened to the entire rest of the series, I would not have cared; but the change was a little off-putting for me. Otherwise, a typically enjoyable Father Tim book.
Nothing like the rest of the books
It was a real struggle to make it through this book. The narrator was OK, although other reviewed disliked him. I do prefer John McDonough however. Bottom line, this story was just plain BORING. Too many people and names tossed about made it confusing, as did all the Irish dialect. I've listened to all the Mitford books up to this point and have enjoyed them until this one. What a disappointment.
    Not like the others
I really did not enjoy this book. It still had Father Tim saving the day with his well meaning spirit, but I could've done with this one in the series. Such a disappointment. I just could not get into it.
However if you have Irish heritage, you might enjoy it.
    Classic Karon
What made the experience of listening to In the Company of Others the most enjoyable?
I always love the warmth of Father Tim's relationship with his wife, Cynthia. Their late-in-life love seems to keep him perpetually amazed by his great good luck. As trite as it may seem, I find this very deeply reassuuring that life can always hold one more surprise.
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite character is always Father Tim.
What about Erik Singers performance did you like?
It took a while to get over the disappointment at the change of readers. Although Erik Singer is very good I imagine many listeners would enjoy having McDonough back.
If you could rename In the Company of Others, what would you call it?

I'm Signing Up for the Series!
I enjoyed this book tremendously. The story of women supporting each other was heartwarming. I really liked different characters with different voices and view points. A story where people make progress in their personal growth is always a winner in my book. A great read! I enjoyed not having to deal with profanity. I plan to read more of this series.
Abagail sounds like she's in her 80's, not 62!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes, it's heartwarming and shows that people of different decades can be good friends. However, I found some of the characterizations to be stereotyped, especially the wealthy.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have gotten a different voice for Abagail.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Absolutely. I could barely listen to Abagail. She's supposed to be 62? I'm in my 60's and know many women my age. None of us sounds that old. We sound more like Evelyn. The author must be very young.
Could you see A Single Thread being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    Probably a Hallmark.
    Any additional comments?
Too bad. It was a heartwarming story, but I really had trouble getting past the narration.
    Narrators were great
I really enjoyed listening & getting to know the personalities. Good story, but I didn't realize how sad it was to be as that wasn't part of the description. But happy too...
    Christian oriented fiction
Well written but somewhat heavy handed in the religious area. One abortion fuels lifelong regret. Lots of church going and praying (on the sly). Breast cancer, quilting and close friendships. Betrayal by a sister and retribution.

Changeling knight in the court of the Duke of Shadowed Hills, October Toby Daye has survived numerous challenges that would destroy fae and mortal alike.
Now Toby must take on a nightmarish new assignment. Someone is stealing both fae and mortal children and all signs point to Blind Michael. When the young son of Tobys closest friends is snatched from their Northern California home and his sister falls into a coma-like state, the situation becomes way too personal. Toby has no choice but to track the villains down, even when there are only three magical roads by which to reach Blind Michaels realm home of the legendary Wild Hunt and no road may be taken more than once. If she cannot escape with all the children before the candle that guides and protects her burns away, Toby herself will fall prey to the Wild Hunt and Blind Michaels inescapable power.
And it doesnt bode well for the success of her mission that her own personal Fetch, May Daye - the harbinger of Tobys own death has suddenly turned up on her doorstep.

    Misleading Description Book 2 / Book 3
I thought I had this book already, because the description noted was for Book 2, A Local Habitation, in which Toby investigates January's problems in the Country of Tamed Lightening. This is Book 3, An Artificial Night. Correct description: Toby is dismayed to encounter her frighteningly upbeat Fetch, May Daye, a magical doppelgänger heralding her imminent demise. Hot on its heels comes the discovery that Blind Michael, lord of the Wild Hunt, has kidnapped a number of fae and human children--including several whom Toby considers family--to replenish his riders. Enjoyable addition to the series.
The Best Fairy Story I've Ever Read
I purchased "An Artificial Night" after listening to the first two books on my iPod. I loved this book! The characters were well developed and the plot was excellent! The book has strong sequencing and the arc of the story was wonderful. I've read many, many SF-F books from all the highly acclaimed authors and this ranks right up with the best of them.
Purchase this title. You'll be glad you did.
Third in Series and Quite Good
By the time I'm writing this the October Daye series has reached at least 7 books so I'm a bit behind, or I've been reading them out of order, which is entirely possible. Except for some references that I had to look up, the book stands alone pretty well. I generally like Seanan McGuire's writing though and I thought this story about children, Fae and human being stolen from their beds is fresh and interesting.
The story opens with October meeting her fetch-- the look alike who appears to someone before her death. The fetch is named May Daye which is painful given the fact that May is the opposite month from October and the use of May Day as code for a distress signal. Then the children of friends of her is stolen and Toby sets out to rescue them.
While it's not the greatest Urban Fantasy I have ever read it is quite good and entertaining.
Mary Robinette Kowal also does a good job with the narration. I found this an engrossing experience.
Deliciously darker than the first two.
Note: Even tho this is Book 3 in the series, it works mostly fine as a stand alone.
