    Publisher's Summary:
Crafted by the creator of the beloved Mrs. Pollifax series, this little gem of a novel sparkles with romance and intrigue. The story whisks you to the enchanting rural abode known as Thales Folly, whose occupants are anything but fools. As you get to know these charming people and their magical home, a delicious scent of mystery infuses the fresh country air.
Andrew Thale is not exactly thrilled when his overbearing father sends him on an errand to assess the property inherited from an eccentric aunt. Andrew is intrigued though, when he finds the house fully occupied. Its odd and interesting residents have a calming effect on him, especially the beautiful young woman named Tarragon. But his arrival seems to have set a series of mysterious events into motion. Narrator John McDonoughs engaging performance lets you share in the excitement and camaraderie. Like Andrew Thale, you will want to linger in this mellow country haven.

    Excellent Story and Narration!
I loved and cherished every moment of this book. James McDonough narrated it and it was such a joy listening to him. He is like an old friend as he narrated the Mitford series by Jan Karon.
Dorothy Gilman wrote the Mrs. Pollifax series which I also loved and adored. What a gift she has for transporting me to another place and time, to help me experience the story as if I were surrounded by it...I cannot wait to read more of her books, so I do not remain depressed since this book ended too quickly.
Thales Folly was a joy, and I have bought the paperback book so I can share it with everyone. This book demonstrates the beauty of a simple, innocent life far away from the bustle of "reality" and worldly greed. The life these lovely people built, living off the land, and being in touch with nature, and their inherent knowledge that each person comes into your life on purpose, to help you fulfill your purpose and theirs, nothing happens accidentally, and your future cannot be what it will, without your past...all simple lessons, and ones we should be reminded of often.
    Great story!!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I was drawn quickly into the story and my attention was held captive until the end.
What about John McDonoughs performance did you like?
I like his voice, he doesn't try to change for each character, but still reads so each person is distinct.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, but I looked forward to the times when I was able to listen.
    Delightful Intrigue
If you like the feeling of curling up in front of a fire with a good book, then this is that sort of book. It is a charming mystery with little twists. It inspired me to make evening tea with fresh thyme I was growing in a pot on my porch; and I will never smell thyme again without remembering this story.
    Most satisfying tale
This is one of the best books I've listened to by Dorothy Gilman. I've been a fan of the Mrs. Pollifax series (read by Barbara Rosenblat) for the last year and decided to listen to others by Ms. Gilman. However, my enjoyment was greatly enhanced by the reading style of John McDonough!
Charming story with little twists and turns
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is not a violent or graphic novel. The plot and characters are interesting. Mr. McDonough's narration is wonderful.

It really pains me to rate this this way....
Ok so it really pains me to have to write my review this way since there were so many things I enjoyed about this book, but I have to give it the most solid 3 ever.
The Good: Narration is superb! The main character Maggie is hysterical, lovable, energetic, and pretty (well almost) normal. There were many touching, realistic scenes that could honestly happen to either one of us. The writing is phenomenal and funny as heck.
The Bad: Why the heck did the male interest not speak but like 4 times in the entire book? There was nothing to fall in love with and I mean even a grouch speaks to someone at least once a day.
I have to agree with another reviewer I read because while everything else lined up for a great novel, the actual supposed romance robbed the book from a 5 star rating. Dang they could have given more as far as a leading man was concerned.
    Dismal after The Best Man
Ok, so how do you fall in love with a guy that doesn't say more than....um.... 3 words in any given sentence? AND that is just my first of oh-so-many-dissapointments about this book.
Very well written, and freaking fantastic narrator! I love her. really good. PLUS i loved The Best Man- so I was primed to love this book to- PLUS being a golden retriever lover.
But nooooo....I don't want to ruin it, but lets just say that i was moved to extremely sad tears (read here: NOT HAPPY) at one part of the book. While the first part is fun and reading about her Dating disasters is quite hilarious- I just kept thinking, OK ....where is the more!? Where is the great guy, or the quiet guy comes out of the shell, or i donno, SOMETHING! but wait.... nothing.
Well let me tell you about that more- sitting here with just an hour and 11 minutes left of the book, i'm still holding out hope for something to turn around. Which I know, because i love this genre of books, that it will work out- i have not particularly enjoyed the ride. I keep waiting for her lot to get better, but so far- no resolution. I mean this book better have the best freaking fantastic ever ending to redeem itself!
Usually when reading this genre you know that something has to turn for the worst and then resolve. Yet, 80% of this book is for the worst. I mean, it gets ultra crappy for our dear sweet heroine (which is, kinda annoying to be honest.)
But anyways, this will definitely NOT be in my reread list. Although, it must be said, that i've been up since 3am listening to it... THAT should tell you how much hope i had for it. I just kept waiting for it to get better. So steer clear if you love SEP, or Lisa Kleypas, etc. Plus the romance left a lot to be desired. just saying.
    Really great!!
LMAO at the bowling scene. Quick wit had me laughing throughout and even shed some tears.

  • Omerta Audiobook by Mario Puzo

    Title: Omerta
    Author: Mario Puzo
    Narrator: Michael Imperioli
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-18-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 125 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Mario Puzo spent the last three years of his life writing Omerta, the concluding installment in his saga about power and morality in America. In The Godfather, he introduced us to the Corleones. In The Last Don, he told the wicked tale of the Clericuzios. In Omerta, Puzo chronicles the affairs of the Apriles, a family on the brink of legitimacy in a world of criminals.
Don Raymonde Aprile is an old man wily enough to retire gracefully from organized crime after a lifetime of ruthless conquest. Having kept his three children at a distance, he's ensured that they are now respectable members of the establishment: Valerius is an army colonel who teaches at West Point, Marcantonio is an influential TV network executive, and Nicole is a corporate litigator with a weakness for pro bono cases to fight the death penalty. To protect them from harm, and to maintain his entrée into the legitimate world of international banking, Don Aprile has adopted a "nephew" from Sicily, Astorre Viola, whose legal guardian made the unfortunate decision to commit suicide in the trunk of a car. Astorre is an unlikely enforcera macaroni importer with a fondness for riding stallions and recording Italian ballads with his band.
Though Don Aprile's retirement is seen as a business opportunity by his last Mafia rival, Timmona Portella, it is viewed with suspicion by Kurt Cilke, the FBI's special agent in charge of investigating organized crime. Cilke has achieved remarkable success in breaking down the bonds between families, cultivating high-ranking sources who in return for federal protection have violated omertaSicilian for "code of silence", the vow among men of honor that, until recently, kept them from betraying their secrets to the authorities.
As Cilke and the FBI mount their campaign to wipe out the Mafia once and for all, Astorre Viola and the Apriles find themselves in the midst of one last war, a conflict in which it is hard to distinguish who, if anyone, is on the right side of the law, and whether mercy or vengeance is the best course of action.
Rich with suspense, dark humor, and the larger-than-life characters who have turned Mario Puzo's novels into modern myths, Omertais a powerful epitaph for the Mafia in a new century, and a final triumph for a great American storyteller.
    Critic Reviews:
"[A] deft and passionate last novel by the Balzac of the Mafia." (Time)
"A splendid piece of crime fiction.... A fitting cap to a tremendous career.... Through it all, Puzo keeps the heat on and keeps the reader enthralled with his characters and his story." (The Denver Post)
    Members Reviews:
    Just brilliant!
I was deeply saddened when the story came to an end. I am surprised this wasn't turned into a movie. Woooow!
not the godfather but very entertaining .
Very good story . holds your attention and goes by too fast. strongly recommend to any Puzo fan
    Great riveting story.
The story was great and capturing. Puzo has a great ability to weave a tale.
Somehow, in listening through all of Puzo, this one feels like an abridgement of itself.
Michael Imperioli brings something nicely young to the character of Astoria. But overall, he reads too fast and this makes the sumptuousness of Puzo's storytelling seem like so much exposition. And then, ultimately, I missed his Puzo's long digressions into each character's world.

    Publisher's Summary:
A rerelease of this award-winning, critically acclaimed novel just in time for its major motion picture release, directed by two-time Academy Award winner Ang Lee; screenplay by Jean-Christophe Castelli; and featuring Joe Alwyn, Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, and Garrett Hedlund, with Vin Diesel and Steve Martin.
A ferocious firefight with Iraqi insurgents - caught on tape by an embedded Fox News crew - has transformed the eight surviving men of Bravo Squad into America's most sought-after heroes. For the past two weeks, the Bush administration has sent them on a media-intensive nationwide victory tour to reinvigorate public support for the war. Now, on this chilly and rainy Thanksgiving, the Bravos are guests of a Dallas football team, slated to be part of the halftime show.
Among the Bravos is Specialist William Lynn, a 19-year-old Texas native. Amid clamoring patriots sporting flag pins on their lapels and "support our troops" bumper stickers on their cars, the Bravos are thrust into the company of the team owner and his coterie of wealthy colleagues; a luscious born-again cheerleader; a veteran Hollywood producer; and supersized pro players eager for a vicarious taste of war. Among these faces Billy sees those of his family - his worried sisters and broken father - and Shroom, the philosophical sergeant who opened Billy's mind and died in his arms.
Over the course of this day, Billy will begin to understand difficult truths about himself, his country, his struggling family, and his brothers-in-arms soldiers both dead and alive. In the final few hours before returning to Iraq, Billy will drink and brawl, yearn for home and mourn those missing, face a heart-wrenching decision, and discover pure love and a bitter wisdom far beyond his years.
Poignant, riotously funny, and exquisitely heartbreaking, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk is a searing and powerful novel that has cemented Ben Fountain's reputation as one of the finest writers of his generation.

    Editorial Reviews:
"The narrator, Oliver Wyman...imbues each member of Bravo Company with a thoughtfully defined character: Billy is unschooled but far from stupid, and Wyman walks that line effectively. The book's pages display words adrift in space, spelled phonetically...but Wyman manages to give each word and phrase the sensibility of the typographical tricks." (John Schwartz, The New York Times Book Review)

Moving, Poignant, Ironic Tale of Young Vet
I loved this book. It's the closest thing to Mark Twain I've read in a long time. Entertaining, poignant, ironic, and a tribute to decent people being manipulated by the charlatans. Then protagonist is a young soldier whose heroism in battle was captured by a Fox news crew. The Army sends him and his buddies on a publicity tour of the US. The high point is their attendance on Thanksgiving day at a Dallas/Chicago football game at Cowboys Stadium. The author does a marvelous job of showing Billy's inner turmoil, knowing he has to go back to the war when the game is over. He meets a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and it's instant love for both of them.

    Love Charles Martin stories!!!!!
I can't say enough about this story! Charles Martin has done it again!!!!! Another amazing story! I laughed, I cried, I felt like I was there..... I'll never look at a car on the side of the road w/out wondering "what is their story"? How could they change my life?
Charles Martin does his homework and can write a story as if he was living it personally. He knows all the history and background of his stories inside and out! A+++++ I can't wait for the next one!!!
A mans story, a love story?
Everything that is good and right and the way it should be. This is a story written by a man that understands the mans code, metrosexuals might be confused by the ethic in this tome, or might be, probably be, enlightened by it. As men we often are told by women to "read this and you will understand me" we read it. Well as a man to a woman, I would say, "read this and you will understand me" and leave it at that. This is a well written story, by a man, that also is able to write about the feelings that make a man the way we often are, when a man is the right kind of stuff. The action is good, there is tension and suspense and there is a love story. A mans perspective kind of love story. I really liked this book, I did not know it would be what it was but am very glad I listened to it. A really good find one I would highly recommend.
Outstanding! Listen, smile, laugh, cry, and learn.
Would you consider the audio edition of Thunder and Rain to be better than the print version?
Never read the printed version. It just couldn't be as good as the audio!
What did you like best about this story?
The lesson. We run out of hope at times. This book is a reminder of hope. Living is the hard part. Gather the courage to live and the hope of tomorrow. What a great writer! I need more of his books to read and remind me.
Which character as performed by Daniel May and Luci Christian Bell was your favorite?
All of the characters were performed greatly. The mix of Daniel May and Luci Christian Bell made the story. I so enjoyed hearing Hope as a little girl then as an adult. But, it took both Mr. May and Ms. Bell to put the story on line. Greatly done.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Definitely, I did listen almost in one sitting.

Cannie Shapiro never wanted to be famous. The smart, sharp, plus-sized pop culture reporter was perfectly content writitng about other people's lives in the pages of the Philadlphia Examiner. But the day she opened up a national women's magazine to find out that her ex-boyfriend has been chronicling their ex-sex life is the day her life changes forever.
Loving a larger woman is an act of courage in our world, Bruce has written. And Cannie - who never knew that Bruce saw her as a larger woman, or thought that loving her was an act of courage - is plunged into misery, and into the most amazing year of her life.
Radiant with wit, bursting with surprises, and written with bite and bittersweet humor, Jennifer Weiner reaches beyond Cannie's story and into the heart of every woman. Gut-level real and laugh-out-loud funny, Good in Bed celebrates the courage of the human spirit and features an unbelievably funny cast of supporting characters, the strangest dog you'll ever encounter, and a heroine you'll never forget.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Funny, zippy, and unflinchingly honest,
Good In Bed is a powerhouse debut for Jennifer Weiner. I consumed this extra-large portion of a book in one sitting, rooting for Cannie the heroine and willing horrible atrocities on her ex-boyfriend. Some big surprises kept the pages flying; I grinned the whole way through.
Good In Bed can only be described as deeply satisfying." (Valerie Frankel Author of

    Pretty Serious Stuff....
If you could sum up Good in Bed in three words, what would they be?
    Emotional, heavy, well-written
Who was your favorite character and why?
I feel that it's kind of important to like the main charater (which I did) in order to even finish a book, but Maxie was my favorite charater. She's a good friend and a genuine person inspite of her profession and the living in the impossible world of Hollywood.
Have you listened to any of Laura Hickss other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't, but she was really good! Her performance was dry, which was perfect for Canny's charater. She did an excellent job with her charater voices.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were alot of moving moments in this book. This story provoked alot of emotion for me, I laughed, cried (well ok, not actually cried), it made me angry, and suprised me. Yes there were a few twists and turns, some "I didn't see that coming" yet I felt a bit misguided by the synopsis and felt the other reviews left out alot about the general feeling of this book.
I personally did not find this book lighthearted or funny (in general), it was a very emotional book, a story about one woman's struggle with how to deal with her abondment issues, her struggle with her body image, and finding love and lasting joy. Canny has a dry witty, sarcastic sence of humor, she has many amusing "one liners" that contributes to the humor in this story, but I would NOT consider this to be a funny book (which is what I was looking for).

But it is clear that something is horribly wrong between them - too much has been hidden. Then Kathy vanishes, along with their boat.
Pursued by rumors of the atrocities he committed in Vietnam, a politician and his wife seek refuge in a cabin in Minnesota, where a mystery unfolds, in this widely acclaimed, best-selling novel.
    Critic Reviews:
"A beautifully written, haunting novel that evokes lives in deep crisis." (Booklist)
"O'Brien develops several maddeningly plausible explanations, allowing readers to draw their own conclusions in this dark but wonderful novel that should gain him a host of new fans. For fiction collections both large and small." (Library Journal)
"Was she murdered? Did she run away? Instead of answering these questions, O'Brien raises even more as he slowly reveals past lives and long-hidden secrets. Included in this third-person narrative are 'interviews' with the couple's friends and family as well as footnoted excerpts from a mix of fictionalized newspaper reports on the case and real reports pertaining to historical events - a mélange that lends the novel an eerie sense of verisimilitude. If Kathy's disappearance is at the heart of this work, then John's involvement in a My Lai-type massacre in Vietnam is its core, and O'Brien uses it to demonstrate how wars don't necessarily end when governments say they do." (Amazon.com review)

Not a life-changing or pivotal war story
I read this book for a book group expecting big things, since I fell in love with The Things They Carried. This.. well it fell flat. I wasn't particularly motivated to keep listening, in part because the story wasn't that captivating. The characters no longer held my interest after getting about 1/4 of the way through. In part, it felt like they were colored *too* much by the narration--I disliked the performance of the wife, which made it harder for me to keep listening.
It might have been better if I'd read it, but I'm not sure. As one person I discussed the book with pointed out, the reliance on the My Lai Massacre and this future senator's role in it felt a bit cheap. The use of multiple possible narratives just didn't strike me as important. The "Evidence" chapters felt a bit like a cop out.
The only thing that felt really honest about the book was its inclusion of testimonials from the characters who participated in the war--O'Brien, as always, managed to capture what it does to a person when you teach them to kill and teach them to fight. I just don't know that I felt this story was necessary to make that point.
    Too much story for me
I listened to this book for a Literature class. I have read several short stories from the same author.

    Simply beautiful
I have been listening to many audiobooks lately, but this is the first time I feel the need to write a review. This is probably the best audiobook I have listened to, so far.
The story was moving, touching and gripping. At times, I simply couldnt stop listening. Several times, I found myself laughing out loud or crying. The characters are extremely well-defined, but honestly I believe that what made of this audiobook my favorite, is the main narrators performance. I would listen to her voice for hours! She was able to interpret the characters superbly and for me it was always easy to understand which character was speaking. When it was time to choose my next audiobook, I was extremely sad to find out that she has not read many of them yet.
Please forgive my mistakes, English is not my first language but audiobooks are a lovely way to improve it!
    Excellent read
Where does Me Before You rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
A book that continually is on my mind, and gave me a very different perpective in to a very touchy subject.
What did you like best about this story?
Trying to understand two completely opposed views which were so well presented, that at times you weren't sure what your own views were on the subject.
What about the narratorss performance did you like?
It was well read with understanding and feeling
Who was the most memorable character of Me Before You and why?
All of them in their own way were memorable.
    Any additional comments?
A book that tests your perceptions of the right to die with dignity, and the effect it has on those close to you, when they have to struggle with loss and face condemnation from others who knew nothing of the person concerned. A reality check.
    beautiful!
couldn't stop listening. the beautifully told story did not have the ending that i was expecting.
    So many tears
I listened to this audiobook as a experiment. What is better the book or the movie?
I usually find that the book is better, this was the case as well. While there were some modifications the movie made that I enjoyed, I found myself connecting to the characters in a way I didn't in the film. Learning the backstories and delving deeper into them, I came to think of them as people in my own life. I was supporting them through out there journey, and was happy to know that they arrived at the end with some peace.
A great story, I highly recommend.
    Fantastic

    Confusing
If, like me, you have not read the Cedar Cove series, don't download this book! I was so confused by all the characters that I didn't know that I gave up about 45 minutes into the story. Maybe I'll read some of the series and come back later to this one!
Good wrapup to the series, so-so story
I have listened to all the books in this series, and was interested to hear the ending. Most of the book is brief recaps of each major character's story. The story that ties these together is pretty skimpy. The first few chapters leave us knowing what those characters plan for the future. This book is mainly Ms Macomber saying goodbye to her friends at Cedar Cove. It seemed like she kinda got tired of it before she covered all the characters. A few of the lesser characters weren't mentioned at all. However, the story was well narrated by Sandra Burr, and it is nice to know that all the people I got to know are safely settled in storyland. I would recommend this to anyone who read most of the series, just for the closure.
    BORING
What would have made 1225 Christmas Tree Lane better?
It should have had an independent plot instead of rehashing the previous books in the series.
What was most disappointing about Debbie Macombers story?
Tooooooo much repetition from earlier books.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from 1225 Christmas Tree Lane?
She should have just written one chapter to tie up loose ends from the previous books in the series.
    Any additional comments?
I wish I had not spent money on this.
    Warms You Through and Through
This is my third listen in this series, although the book is actually book twelve, (the last) in the series. I didn't have any trouble "keeping up" though. I love this book. It has all the elements of a wonderful Christmas story . . . forgiveness, family, reconciliation, babies, and even puppies. The first book in this series felt like "light fare". This one doesn't. Your heart will swell and you will root for these precious folks, ordinary people who have made some bad choices, who have hurt one another, and who are trying to work up the courage to make it right.
    Cedar Cove Gang
Debbie Macomber brings all of the characters featured in her past Cedar Cove books together in this cute Christmas addition. Beth opens her front door one morning to an abandoned basket full of Lab puppies.
