    Title: Almost a Great Escape
    Author: Tyler Trafford
    Narrator: Mike Vendetti
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-29-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
Following his mother's death, in 2004, Tyler Trafford discovers an album of old letters and creased photographs that reveal a mother he never knew, a man he's never heard of, and a love affair doomed by class and circumstance. The letters are from Jens Mller, a Norwegian pilot who trained in Canada during the early days of World War II, one of only three prisoners who would make it home after The Great Escape.
In Almost a Great Escape, Trafford takes us on a journey of emotional discovery and dramatic disclosure as he reconstructs his mother's life, from her youth as a wealthy Montreal debutante to her final days as a broken but unbent casualty of a loveless marriage. His search for answers takes him across Canada and then across the ocean to Norway, hoping to learn more about the mystery of this secret relationship.
Written with a fluidity fueled by heart-wrenching honesty, Trafford's unconventional memoir confirms that while you can survive your past, you can never escape from it.
    Editorial Reviews:
Love letters stashed among papers he reads after his mothers passing send Canadian journalist Tyler Trafford on a global journey of discovery that takes him, most importantly, deep into his own heart.
Mike Vendettis baritone hits the appropriately somber tone as a son learns of his Canadian debutante mothers secret engagement to a Norwegian fighter pilot, one of the few to return home after the famous "Great Escape" from a Nazi POW camp. While his mother, victim to her own mothers demons, was never able to become the writer she hoped or escape a loveless marriage, Trafford learns that what he experienced as rejection was instead his mothers best effort to provide him freedom and happiness.
    Critic Reviews:
"The audio version of this touching memoir illustrates the point that hearing a story is a more personal and immediate experience than simply reading one. Narrator Mike Vendetti achieves this intimacy with his nuanced delivery of Trafford's extraordinary story of star-crossed lovers...Vendetti's blending of brisk narration with softer introspective passages gives all the personalities distinctive voices while also delivering the emotional depth of this son's moving tribute to his beloved mother." A mesmerizing account of consequences
Tyler Trafford was a reporter in Calgary Alberta Canada. Following his mother's death in 2004 he inherited a Campbell soup cardboard box from his Mother. It was crammed with letters, a journal and photographs that revealed a history of his mother he never imagined. His mother was a beautiful girl from a rich family in Montreal whose Mother was controlling. She met a young pilot from Norway who was training at a nearby base. His name was Jens Muller, the love letters were from him. He went down over German and was a P.O. W. he was with a group that escaped. A movie was made about the escape called "The Great Escape" Muller was one of the few that made it out. I will not spoil the story but Trafford wrote the book about how he puts his mother's life as a young woman together. It does show how decision made can effect our life forever. Mike Vendetti does a good job reading the story.
You'll not learn much about the Great Escape, but.
I'm afraid that it may take a poet to do this book justice.

    Narrator: Ginger Cucolo
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-13
    Publisher: Allen House Publishing
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
The 100 year anniversary of the official use of American military personal identity tags, affectionately known as Dog Tags, recently passed without fanfare. We are currently in a war where the Dog Tag is once again a highly personal item to warriors in every service and their families. Each Dog Tag carries its own human interest story. Receiving it, hanging it around the neck, and feeling it is at once a silent statement of commitment. The tag itself individualizes the human being who wears it within a huge and faceless organization. The armed forces demand obedience, commitment, and duty to a higher cause, but the Dog Tag which hangs privately within their shirts, close to their chests, becomes a part of them. In a way it brings comfort to that fear of every Soldier facing death: I do not want to be forgotten; I will not be unknown. Understanding and sharing the history of Dog Tags , the stories shared with me from personal accounts, the cultural impact on merchandising, and the future within our Armed Services.

    Tags!
The history of the dog tag now this is a book any military history buff must have on his shelf. And if said buff doesn't have it, I suggest you find the money and buy it. I would even go so far and recommend to this to any enlisted, NCO or Officer to add this to his reading list.
    Worth your time...
Absolutely outstanding. Ginger knows how to tell a story. Highly recommended.
    Excellent
This is a very good book. I am doing some research on coins used as identification tags in World War I. I found some very useful information here that I have not found elsewhere. I particularly enjoyed the image of an advertisement in a ca. 1865 Harper's magazine that offered various identity tags for private purchase. Furthermore, the authors states that suttlers created ID tags from coins for a few during the Civil War.
By World War I, the United States had adopted an official tag. That tag was to be approximately the size of a half dollar. Whether the tags that we see today were in fulfillment of the regulation or supplementary in nature I do not know at this time, but I am working on it!
    Book of the Year Award
WHAT A GREAT BOOK!!! IT IS TERRIFIC! All should read it whether you have been in service or the child or sibling, the wife or husband, mother or father, or grandparents of one who has served. "DOG TAGS" should make the best seller list of all news media lists.
This is one book which should be placed in all of the school libraries. Many history teachers would find this a great read as one of a list of required reading. The teacher should never force a student to read one book in particular, but this one certainly belongs in a list included for for students to choose. It's a great part of history that should never be forgotten.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 46 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
What if Stalin had signed with the West in 1939? What if the Allies had been defeated on D-Day? And what if Hitler had won the war?
From the Munich crisis to the dropping of the first atom bomb, and from Hitler's declaration of war on the United States to the D-Day landings - historians suggest "what would have been" if key events in the war had gone differently. Written by an exceptional team of historians as if these world-changing events had really happened, realistic scenarios based on the true capabilities and circumstances of the opposing forces are projected with chilling implications. What if the Nazis had taken London? The alternate outcomes are fascinating and fully realized. If the Allies Had Fallen is a spirited and terrifying alternate history, and a telling insight into the dramatic possibilities of World War II.
Contributors include Thomas M. Barker, Harold C. Deutsch, Walter S. Dunn, Robert M. Love, D. Clayton James, Bernard C. Nalty, Richard J. Overy, Paul Schratz, Dennis E. Showalter, Gerhard L. Weinberg, Anne Wells, and Herman S. Wolk.
    Editorial Reviews:
What if the allies had lost on D-Day, Hitler was assassinated, or America was prepared for the attack on Pearl Harbor? If the Allies Had Fallen examines World War II's vast network of strategic contingencies. Nineteen respected historians speculate on how single decisions and split-second actions might easily have turned out differently, completely rewriting history in the process. Jaunty performer Joe Barrett oversees the proceedings with the brusque, gritty baritone of a field general. This anthology of counterfactuals reminds audiences that there was a time when past was present, and a whole realm of possibility lay open. The imaginative performances show listeners that considering alternative - perhaps preferable - outcomes to those we inherit allows one to better understand the lessons of history.

    very interesting
I is very interesting read. It is well voiced and entertaining. It also ansered alot of questions I had kicking around in the back of my mind. A very good read.
This is NOT Man in the HIgh Castle
What made the experience of listening to If the Allies Had Fallen the most enjoyable?
It presents some alternative points of view to things provided other events did or did not occur. It is written by a historian but he allows himself to speculate on alternative events.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    N/A
Which character as performed by Joe Barrett was your favorite?
    N/A
    not quite as i expected.
this book had great views and scholarly information but seemed to not follow the title of the book. If the allies had fallen. well what would happen? how would it have come about? the last scenario actually took a look at this. the other 59 scenarios looked at the history and small minor changes. even tho the allies probably would have won no matter what... there is still the possibility that german commanders could have maneuvered and out planned the allies. granted hitler was too demanding and a micro manager to actually achieve victory. i liked what i heard and learned a good deal just didnt think the title was most fitting. if you want this book just dont expect the title and you will be fine.

    Publisher's Summary:
Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield. You'll learn that an irate blacksmith threw his hammer at a fox and missed, hitting a rock and revealing the largest vein of silver ever discovered, thus changing the finances of Canada forever. Interestingly, Charlton Heston was cast as Moses in The Ten Commandments because his broken nose made him look like Michelangelo's famous sculpture of Moses. Finally, no one knows Einstein's last words. They were in German, a language his nurse did not speak.
    Editorial Reviews:
The course of history is often attributed to the grandeur of mighty battle, great discoveries, or stellar feats. But what if every one of those events occurred through some highly unlikely or completely overlooked happening of chance? This is the through-the-looking-glass idea of Phil Mason's bizarrely entertaining Napoleon's Hemorrhoids...And Other Small Events That Changed History. This audiobook is brought to life by the joyously pugnacious performance of L. J. Ganser. If you want to do your historical curiosity a favor sit down and listen to this ridiculously great audioand discover all the what-ifs of the past.

    Editorial Reviews:
A survivor of World War II, Erik Durschmied spent the rest of his life studying battle from the front line as a war correspondent. In The Hinge Factor: How Chance and Stupidity Have Changed History Durschmied discusses how sheer dumb luck has altered the trajectory of civilization. Kevin Stillwell's performance effortlessly brings us to settings and times as diverse as the battlefields of Ancient Rome and the sky above Hiroshama. Indeed, Durschmied's first anecdote describes how something as simple as cloud cover determined the target of a deadly new weapon.

    History written by a journalist
Fairly easy read based on the premise of âwhat ifâ a particularly bad military decision or inaction hadnât occurred. All good stuff, none controversial, more re-affirming what others have identified as historically altering moments.
What is annoying is the inconsistency of quoting foreigners speaking their native tongue. Some Europeans are quoted as such with an accompanying English translation, some are not- even when the quote is at some length, leaving those of us trying to master just one tongue unnecessarily in the dark. It is not that deep a subject. Russians, Arabs and those from the Far East are deemed honorary English and are quoted as such.
A small point, but as the book ably points out, sometimes it is the smaller choices that have the largest impact.
but still amazed. This book is like the old series by ...
I believe in God's providence in the history of all the nations and so when I see that these things that are far outside the realm of convention, I am not surprised, but still amazed. This book is like the old series by Paul Harvey, THE REST OF THE STORY--only in reverse. He gave the small details and then told to what great event the events led. This man recognizes the event and then digs the non-famous truths that carried out this famous story. His format is interesting to read and on a scholarly level, he clarifies how the event in the story opens the way to other events in history.
    It didn't have to be
It's easy to look back and think historical events had to unfold the way they did. But I agree with the author that Big Events often turn on a series of Small Happenings and this book is a fascinating look at what could have been.
    Uneven
The early chapters are hard to follow. They refer to so many unfamiliar places and people from long-forgotten wars that the flow of the story lines and the battles become very confusing. The later stories from the last century have a more familiar background and are therefore more enjoyable.
    Five Stars
    Good book, fast delivery

I could only entre comments if I put one star down
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
After the first couple of chapters I was very excited to get into this book. What a shame I will never finish it.
What was most disappointing about James Owens story?
The author decided to disrespect the Australian troops. From this I could only ascertain that all the research would be invalid.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    No
    Any additional comments?
Can I get my money back?
    gripping first book
This book and the stories within had me spellbound
A must read for anyone remotely interested in the military
Book good, but audio recording - oh dear
It's a good book let down by a poor audio recording. Or more precisely, let down by the very strange and even confusing mis-pronunciations that feature very heavily in the recording. Some are just bizarre, but some also undermine the meaning, most particularly the way Boulogne (in France) is pronounced as Bologna (in Italy). Unless you already know otherwise, that makes for some very confusing sections,
    awesome and gripping story

    Title: The Kingdom
Subtitle: Arabia & The House of Sa'ud
    Author: Robert Lacey
    Narrator: Frederick Davidson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 22 hrs and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-15-12
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 71 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
The Kingdom is the story of a country - a country of astonishing contrasts, where routine computer printouts open with the words In the name of God, where men who grew up in goat-hair tents now dominate the money markets of the world, and where murderers and adulterers are publicly executed in the street. By its own reckoning, this country is just entering the 15th century.
The Kingdom is also the story of a family - a family that has fought its way from poverty and obscurity into wealth and power the likes of which the world has never known, a family characterized by fierce loyalty among its members, ruthlessness toward its enemies, and dedication to one of the worlds most severe and demanding creeds.
The Kingdom is Saudi Arabia - the only country in the world to bear the name of the family that rules it.
    Critic Reviews:
In Saudi Arabia, Robert Lacey had the kind of access most journalists only dream of. (David Brancaccio)
Frederick Davidsons well-paced, crisp, and forthright reading commands the listeners attention. (AudioFile)
[Laceys] grasp of Saudi thinking and purposes is most intensely felt in the final, 1973-and-after, sectionwhere he is able to make sympathetically intelligible, even inescapable, everything from the oil boycott to the Saudis nonconservation of their one valuable resource, from their tolerance of internal dissidence to their outrage at the TV-film Death of a Princess. (Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
    A solid effort
Writing this review is very hard. I lived in Saudi Arabia for 10 years and was eager to read the sections on Abdual Aziaz early conquest of the kingdom and the dealings with I'quan, especially since the later topic was almost a taboo topic among the generation of Saudis old enough to remember them The book also does a good job at explaining the pivital role played the late king Fisal, love him or hate him he is critical to any history of the kingdom.
The problems with the book are two fold.the first is with the text, it almost too detailed. the names often run together even though I knew the major players I found myself rewinding and having trouble keeping track of who was being talked about. the second problem is the narration Fredrick Davidson reads in a dry laconic style which with a book this long it can become dull to listen for long periods.
While the the book was good and informative I find it hard to recommend the book to wide audience given the esoteric nature of the topic but for those interested in the kingdom this book is full of good tidbits and follows a logical pattern but for those looking for an introduction I recommend Lacy's 2009 follow up to this book inside the kingdom
A 'bible' for understanding Saudi Arabia
What made the experience of listening to The Kingdom the most enjoyable?
The historical details. The stories that illuminated the culture and mores of a people who care deeply about their traditions. And the scope. The scope of material is impressive.
What other book might you compare The Kingdom to and why?
Any thing else by Lacey. His research is thorough and yet he retains a detached respect for his subject.
What about Frederick Davidsons performance did you like?
The accent and the characters he conveys throughout the book.
