Title: Tiwanaku: The History and Legacy of the Ancient Pre-Colombian Site in the Heart of the Andes
Author: Charles River Editors, Dr. Jesse Harasta
    Narrator: Colin Fluxman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-27-17
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
"Tiahuanaco is not a very large village, but it is celebrated for the great edifices near it, which are certainly things worth seeing. Near the buildings, there is a hill made by the hands of men on great foundations of stone. Beyond this hill, there are two stone idols of the human shape and figure, the features very skillfully carved, so that they appear to have been done by the hand of some great master. They are so large that they seem like small giants, and it is clear that they have on a sort of clothing different from those now worn by the natives of these parts." - Cieza de Léon, 1883
Few ancient ruins capture the imagination like the mighty holy site of Tiwanaku, located on the high Andean altiplano plateau outside of La Paz, Bolivia. Unlike some ancient sites, such as Machu Picchu in neighboring Peru or Chichen Itzá in Mexico, Tiwanaku has never been "lost"; on the contrary, it has been marveled over for centuries by Incan nobles, Spanish Conquistadores, modern backpackers, and UFO fanatics alike. Despite this history of amazement, Tiwanaku has remained something of an enigma until recently, but it appears that this would have probably been pleasing to its creators. It was created to be a mysterious, sacred, and beautiful place, one with many secrets and a public face characterized by PT Barnum-like showmanship.
Skillful modern archaeology has allowed people to look behind the facade and see, for the first time in many, many centuries, some of the secrets behind it. The story is fascinating, complex, and thoroughly human. The modern visitor arriving to Tiahuanaco finds him or herself in, as Cieza de Léon noted almost 130 years ago, a not very notable, dusty, chilly settlement south of Lake Titicaca.

    Tiwanaku
Fascinating reading. I didn't know anything about this place until I read this. Although I think the author repeats a few things . Helped me to remember it better.
    What history is all about!
This is a place that I would like to see up close and personally. To think that they did all that work by hand with no machinery! More information for this getting older brain of mine.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Actual Truth of the Real Pirates of the Caribbean Story
The pirate is one of the best-known and most-loved anti-heroes. The image of a swaggering adventurer in a tricorne hat and a pair of long leather sea-boots has been a part of Western popular culture for more than 300 years.
However, a great deal of what we believe about pirates is actually based on fictional stories, and even the popular conception of what a pirate looks like is based on a very specific time and place. The truth is that pirates have been around for as long as humans have been sailing ships out of sight of land.
Most real pirates were simply bands of professional criminals who were unable or unwilling to find legal work. Murder, torture, rape, kidnapping, and extortion were all in a day's work for the average pirate. Pirate captains generally ended up in charge for no other reason than that they were even more psychotic and violent than their crews!
The image of the pirate still exerts a strong pull on the popular imagination and features in many successful movies, books, and plays. In modern times, when it sometimes feels as if our every action is controlled by rules and regulations, the idea of a free-booting anarchist defying the system has become even more popular.
But what is the truth behind the popular conception of the pirate? Let's try to cut through the myth and see if we can discover the real story behind the legendary pirates of the Caribbean....

Pirate history on the high seas!
An excellently written book on Pirates. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a lot about Pirate history. Great writing style with excellent grammar. Those interested in Pirate history or just looking for something new to read will certainly enjoy this book. I did receive a free ARC pdf of this book in exchange for a fair review.
    Become a pirate.
A very well written book about some of the real Pirates of the Caribbean. The book is very captivating; hard to put down.
    Couldn`t put it down
Very well written. Informative. Exciting and on point.
    Great Pirate Information
This was a short, but very entertaining read regarding the history of pirates. The book covers some historical encounters, life as a pirate, the differences between piracy and privateering, modern day pirates and more. Major locations, female pirates, pirates in books and films are also covered including the Disney films. Lots of interesting facts, features and tidbits are covered including the more democratic treatment of various racial groups aboard ships that the modern day society disapproved of at the time on many ships. A great fun read.
    Nothing like the movie!
Everyone has either heard of or seen the Pirates of the Caribbean but I had no idea there could actually a non-fiction version! Obviously nothing like the movie but interesting to read and based on actual fact. Great subject.

    Title: The Congo Free State
Subtitle: The History and Legacy of the Colony Established by King Leopold II of Belgium
    Author: Charles River Editors
    Narrator: Scott Clem
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-24-17
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
King Leopold II of Belgium emerges from the pages of history as a curious character. He was a member of a privileged clique of European monarchs, bereft of power but rich, indulgent, and indolent. Leopold certainly availed himself of all the pleasures of court life, but he was also shrewd, astonishingly competent, and avaricious to an almost unimaginable degree. His initial interest in foreign real estate was imperial, insofar as he desired on behalf of Belgium the main accoutrements of a first-rate power, which were, of course, foreign estates and colonies. He was, however, unable to move the Belgian parliament to act in accordance, the conservative belief perhaps being that Belgium could not afford to compete on that level. Belgium was a small European nation, existing between major and, at times, belligerent powers, and as such, it quietly went about its business with a determination not to rock the European boat.
Displaying enormous ability and a masterful grasp of diplomatic maneuver, Leopold was able to secure primary rights over the territory of the Congo River catchment, a portion of the globe more than three times the size of France. By any standards, this was a monumental coup, and by the time the other European powers woke up to precisely what was underway, it was too late the arrest the momentum.
Of all the issues on the agenda as delegates gathered in Berlin in 1884, foremost was the Congo question. The matter was debated, and although deeply troubled by the potential consequences, recognition was eventually afforded to Leopold's claim to the Congo.

this e-book explains why historically there has been no peace in the Congo since its independence
The e-book The Congo Free State: The History and Legacy of the Colony Established by King Leopold II of Belgium was certainly enlightening. I consider King Leopold II to be very intelligent, shrewd, a born diplomat and immoral in the manner how he obtained the Congo Free State. He stressed to the public his desire for the abolishment of slavery and bringing Christianity to the pagans. King Leopold II through the exploration of Henry Morgan Stanley claimed the south bank of the Congo River. None of the colonial powers was clean and perfectly honest about the exploitation of Africa, but King Leopold II was among the very worst of the exploiters. The book describes in detail how King Leopold II obtained control of the Congo and how the Congo was ruthlessly exploited. The book also explains how King Leopold II PR campaign silenced the majority of his critics until the British government's Casement report was published in 1904 that outlined the exploitation of the Congo. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Congo region who wonders why there has never been peace in this country since independence.
    Another excellently detailed historical work
Many describe the superficial aspects of a given event or issue but the Charles River books provide nuanced details and perspectives with objective but value laden commentary. Always insightful and always a delight to read.

Title: The Book Smugglers of Timbuktu
Subtitle: The Race to Reach the Fabled City and the Fantastic Effort to Save its Past
    Author: Charlie English
    Narrator: Jonathan Keeble
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-04-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
Two tales of a city: the historical race to reach one of the world's most mythologized places and the story of how a contemporary band of archivists and librarians, fighting to save its ancient manuscripts from destruction at the hands of al-Qaeda, added another layer to the legend.
To Westerners, the name Timbuktu long conjured a tantalising paradise, an African El Dorado where even the slaves wore gold. Beginning in the late 18th century, a series of explorers gripped by the fever for discovery tried repeatedly to reach the fabled city. But one expedition after another went disastrously awry, succumbing to attack, the climate, and disease.
Timbuktu was rich in another way, too. A medieval centre of learning, it was home to tens of thousands of ancient manuscripts on subjects ranging from religion to poetry, law to history, pharmacology and astronomy. When al-Qaeda-linked jihadists surged across Mali in 2012, threatening the existence of these precious documents, a remarkable thing happened: a team of librarians and archivists joined forces to spirit the manuscripts into hiding.
Relying on extensive research and firsthand reporting, Charlie English expertly twines these two suspenseful strands into a fascinating account of one of the planet's extraordinary places and the myths from which it has become inseparable.
    Critic Reviews:
"The Book Smugglers of Timbuktu is a lovely read. The dramatic present and past of Timbuktu are masterfully interwoven by Charlie English, who has a writer's pleasing prose style, a reporter's nose for the truth and a novelist's ear for narrative structure. Peopled by memorable real-life heroes and villains and with an epic rescue mission at its heart, English's book is a model of fine storytelling." (Jon Lee Anderson)
"In this riveting duel narrative of Timbuktu, juxtaposing Europe's audacious African explorers of yore with Mali's current culture-keepers heroically defending sacred manuscripts from jihadist occupiers, Charlie English manages to do a remarkable thing: he pulls back the veil of mystery that enshrouds the marvellous, dusty city - but only enhances its magic." (Dean King, author of the national best seller Skeletons on the Zahara)
"A finely written and many-sided account.... Charlie English deftly weaves together history, reportage, travelogue and memoir into a gentle, erudite and at times beautiful book." (Robert Macfarlane)
    "A cracking read." (Economist)
"An enchanting tale.... I was gripped." (Joanna Kavenna)

    Publisher's Summary:
Located in the center of Beijing, the Forbidden City served as the palace for the emperor of China from 1420 to 1912 CE, a period encompassing the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was home to the celestial leaders of China, men that possessed the Mandate of Heaven. A total of 24 emperors lived and ruled from the vast and magnificent complex for almost 500 years, until the last Chinese dynasty was overthrown in 1912 with the abdication of Emperor Xuantong, more commonly known as Puyi. Known also as the Forbidden Palace, or amongst contemporary Chinese as the "Former Palace", the complex was first given its name in 1576. The Forbidden City was the home of many thousands of governmental staff, female servants and concubines, eunuchs, soldiers, and kitchen staff, and where their entire lives were built. Nonetheless, entrance to it from the outside was forbidden to all but the emperor, his court, and his relations. Without the permission of the emperor, access to or from the heart of the empire was impossible, but what was once inaccessible is now one of the most visited institutions in the world. Today, the Forbidden City is a UNESCO World Heritage site, operated as the largest museum in the world and located in the heart of the capital of the world's most populous country. The Forbidden City: The History of the Chinese Imperial Palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Beijing examines the history of the palace.
