Title: Other Pasts, Different Presents, Alternative Futures

    Narrator: Charles Henderson Norman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-07-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
What if there had been no World War I or no Russian Revolution? What if Napoleon had won at Waterloo in 1815, or if Martin Luther had not nailed his complaints to the church door at Wittenberg in 1517, or if the South had won the American Civil War?
The questioning of apparent certainties or "known knowns" can be fascinating and, indeed, "What if?" books are very popular. However, this speculative approach, known as counterfactualism, has had limited impact in academic histories, historiography, and the teaching of historical methods. In this book, Jeremy Black offers a short guide to the subject, one that's designed to argue its value as a tool for public and academe alike. Black focuses on the role of counterfactualism in demonstrating the part of contingency, and thus human agency, in history, and the salutary critique the approach offers to determinist accounts of past, present, and future.
This book was published by Indiana University Press.
    Editorial Reviews:
"This is the most robust defense of historical counterfactuals to date. For those interested in this fascinating subject, Black's book is indispensable." (Publishers Weekly)
    Critic Reviews:
"A wide-ranging and lively commentary on the utility (and limits) of examining what did not happen in the past as a way to make sense of what did...represents the kind of wide and up-to-date synthesis that is a hallmark of Black's scholarship." (John Brobst, author of The Future of the Great Game: Sir Olaf Caroe, India's Independence, and the Defense of Asia)
"A concise, comprehensive analysis of an approach to history that is far more complex than either its supporters or its critics understand." (Dennis Showalter, author of Armor and Blood: The Battle of Kursk and the Turning Point of World War II)
    Members Reviews:
Don't Judge this Academic Treatise by its Intriguing Cover Drawing
What if this book was a series of stories about alternative historical events instead of a highly detailed political science treatise on "counter factual" analysis? Then, I would have listened to the book I expected instead of the one I got. My fault for being suckered by the blimp on the cover. Very dry stuff that probably meets high academic standards but know you are getting a lecture series for a war college curriculum.

    Title: Rough Crossings
    Author: Simon Schama
    Narrator: Joseph Paterson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-01-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
Rough Crossings is the astonishing story of the struggle to freedom by thousands of African American slaves who fled the plantations to fight behind British lines in the American War of Independence.
With gripping, powerfully vivid storytelling, Simon Schama follows the escaped blacks into the fires of the war and into freezing, inhospitable Nova Scotia, where many who had served the Crown were betrayed in their promises to receive land at the war's end. Their fate became entwined with British abolitionists: inspirational figures such as Granville Sharp, the flute-playing father-figure of slave freedom; and John Clarkson, the Moses of this great exodus, who accompanied the blacks on their final rough crossing to Africa, where they hoped that freedom would finally greet them.
Simon Schama is university professor of art history and history at Columbia University and the prize-winning author of 14 books, which have been translated into 20 languages. He has written widely on music, art, politics and food for the Guardian, Vogue and The New Yorker.
His award-winning television work as writer and presenter for the BBC stretches over two decades and includes the 15-part A History of Britain and the eight-part, Emmy-winning Power of Art.
    Critic Reviews:
"This brilliant book by the leading historian of our times about a subject of great significance will delight professional historians and entrance the reading public. Rough Crossings succeeds in all respects. It is a 'tour de force' and a landmark in historical scholarship." (Times Higher Education Supplement)
"Schama's gift for plunging us into the very centre of the action, whether in Charleston, London or on the African coast, makes reading an exhilarating experience." (Daily Telegraph)
    "Brilliant and deeply moving." (Observer)
"Schama has a remarkable ability to stare into the anonymous faces in the crowd and to pluck them from historical obscurity. Rough Crossings gives voice to people who have, until now, remained mere names on duty lists." (James Walvin)
"One only has to dip into Rough Crossings to appreciate the command of detail that lies behind his apparently effortless ability to come up with the right quotation or description." (Times Literary Supplement)

  • Prisoners, Lovers, and Spies Audiobook by Kristie Macrakis

    Title: Prisoners, Lovers, and Spies
Subtitle: The Story of Invisible Ink from Herodotus to al-Qaeda
    Author: Kristie Macrakis
    Narrator: Robert E. Prout
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-22-15
    Publisher: Kristie Macrakis
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
Prisoners, Lovers, and Spies is the first history of invisible ink and secret communications revealed through thrilling stories about scoundrels and heroes and their ingenious methods for concealing messages. Spies were imprisoned or murdered, adultery unmasked, and battles lost because of faulty or intercepted secret communications. Yet, successfully hidden writing helped save lives, win battles, and ensure privacy; occasionally it even changed the course of history.
Kristie Macrakis combines a storyteller's sense of drama with a historian's respect for evidence in this pause-resisting history of intrigue and espionage, love and war, magic and secrecy. From the piazzas of ancient Rome to the spy capitals of the Cold War, Macrakis' global history reveals the drama and importance of invisible ink. From Ovid's advice to use milk for illicit love notes, to John Gerard's dramatic escape from the tower of London aided by orange juice ink messages, to al-Qaeda's hidden instructions in pornographic movies, this book presents spellbinding stories of secret messaging that chart its evolution in sophistication and its impact on history.
The book includes fun kitchen chemistry recipes for listeners to try out at home.

    Good book, poor performance
Would you try another book written by Kristie Macrakis or narrated by Robert E. Prout?
I would buy another book by Kirstie Macrakis, but not one narrated by Robert Prout.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    N/A
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator stumbles over pronunciation of some words and leaves weird gaps in sentences which mean you have to concentrate very hard to understand what the author was trying to convey. It sounds like some parts of sentences were re-recorded which results in the voice changing tempo and pitch mid sentence in some places - why not re-record the whole paragraph, or at least the whole sentence?
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment in the narration.
    Any additional comments?
The subject and content of the book are excellent, but it is spoilt by the narration. I have only listened to the first couple of hours, and have given up. I will be buying the print version of the book, though, as the subject is very interesting and the author seems to cover it in great detail.

  • The Tunguska Event: The Mystery of the Biggest Explosion in Recorded History Audiobook by Charles River Editors

Title: The Tunguska Event: The Mystery of the Biggest Explosion in Recorded History
    Author: Charles River Editors
    Narrator: Christopher Hudspeth
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-09-15
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
"On 30 June 1908, a powerful blast ripped open the sky near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia and flattened more than 2,000 square kilometers of forest. Eyewitnesses described a large object tearing through the atmosphere and exploding before reaching the ground, sending a wave of intense heat racing across the countryside. At an estimated three to five megatons of TNT equivalent, it was the biggest impact event in recorded history." (Mark Pelow, author of "Rock Samples Suggest Meteor Caused Tunguska Blast")
When the atomic bombs were used against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, they ushered in a new era of power so destructive that nuclear weapons have not been used in any combat since then. The pictures of the devastated cities demonstrated the sheer strength of such weapons, and the impact was alarming enough to lead to efforts not only to control the proliferation of such weapons but to denuclearize altogether.
It was hard for people to comprehend the power behind nuclear weapons in 1945, but that was due in great measure to the fact that most people were unfamiliar with the Tunguska event, which took place over 35 years earlier in a sparsely populated region of Siberia. On June 30, 1908, an explosion with an epicenter near the Tunguska River flattened an area of about 2,000 square miles, destroying tens of millions of trees and killing countless numbers of wildlife. Miraculously there were no recorded human casualties as a result of the since-named Tunguska event, which generated the energy equivalent of 1,000 of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima. The shockwave alone would have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale.
    Members Reviews:
    A mystery solved.
This very good book answers many questions about the Tunguska Event and debunks some of the more unusual theories, such as a crashed UFO or a nuclear device.
There are many eyewitness accounts of the event described in the book. It amazes me how closely they relate. The Tunguska Event is a small sample of what likely killed the dinosaurs. That being the case, I hope I never see one of these close up.
Anyone who enjoys reading about natural phenomena will love this book.
    Book?
This was not a book!! At most it is a longish article and a deficient one at that. I have had students who would have been embarrassed to offer such a paltry submission. The article lacked focus and direction.
    Enough said.
Selected eyewitness accounts of the Tunguska event
This book provided selected eyewitness reports of the Tunguska event. As is the style of Charles River Editorâs books this story is short and concise. The focus of the book is more on the eyewitness accounts and the book does not attempt to explain its own theory of what caused the Tunguska event. If you like a concise description of the event told by eyewitnesses then this is the book for you; if you want a scientific discussion of how it happened-I would suggest you look elsewhere.
    The Tunguska Event
It is a well thought out of a event that occured in Sibera and the explosion was the result of the impact of whatever caused it. And the chemistry behind the events in finding metals was also interesting. Its a good books to read.
    An interesting read.
The Tunguska Event is a mystery that has intrigued me for ever,I think.

Title: The Moscow Kremlin: The History of Russia's Most Famous Landmark
    Author: Charles River Editors
    Narrator: Nathan Yoder
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 26 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
"Here are luxury and penury, abundance and the most extreme deprivation, piety, and atheism...and an unbelievable frivolity - warring elements which, out of their constant conflicts, create this marvelous, outrageous, gigantic whole which we know by its collective name: Moscow." (Konstantin Batyushkov)
Among all the world's capitals, few contain governmental seats of power as imposing or impressive as the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia. While the name itself is often used as a shorthand to refer to the Russian government, and many people associate it with Red Square, the Kremlin is actually a fortress inside the heart of Moscow, replete with everything from ramparts and towers to decadent churches. The history of Russia is vast and winding, so it should come as no surprise that the same can be said for the Kremlin.
Construction on the site was taking place by the 12th century, and by the 14th century it was imposing enough to withstand sieges. Ivan the Great added artistic flourishes to the Kremlin during the Renaissance, Catherine the Great had a residence built inside it during the 18th century, and Napoleon severely damaged the Kremlin in the course of ordering its destruction during the invasion of Russia in 1812. Even as Russian dynasties came and went, and a transition to the Soviet Union was made, the Kremlin remained - even as constant changes took place within it.

    Five Stars
    Great
    Bad translation, not very informative.
The book had an annoying number of grammatical errors and jumbled sentence structure. I was looking for something that gave a bit of information about the structures in the Kremlin, their use and history. This just seemed to discuss over and over the angles and construction of the walls and towers and the choices between wood vs. stone in the walls. Frankly, I found the book useless.
    EXCELLENT
The KREMLIN, seat of government of Russia and symbol of the Russian culture. This ebook details the history of the Kremlin.
    Three Stars
I thought it was interesting, but a little dry.
The Moscow Kremlin: The History of Russia's... A VERY POOR TRANSLATION
This would be a good addition to the Charles River Editors titles, except that the text was translated by some person who is not a professional translator. That person's knowledge of English in all its features such as vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, syntax, sentence structure and paragraphing is woefully inadequate. The text is whacky and not worth of the other Charles River's titles that I have purchased.

    Title: The Hagia Sophia
Subtitle: The History of the Famous Church and Mosque
    Author: Charles River Editors
    Narrator: Joseph Chialastri
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-06-15
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
The Hagia Sophia, built from 532-537, is inarguably the masterpiece of Byzantine architecture and one of the greatest buildings ever constructed. Upon its completion, the Hagia Sophia remained the largest enclosed space in the world for nearly a thousand years, a reign that only ended after the rebuilding of St. Peter's in Rome. Fittingly, the rebuilding of St. Peter's was partly inspired by the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque in 1453.
The building of Hagia Sophia itself was shocking and transformational. Beginning with Procopius of Caesarea, Justinian's court historian, visitor after visitor noted that the giant dome seems to hover on air, and it's unquestionably true that the arches, vaults, semidomes, and domes add up for an otherworldly, ethereal effect. The surfaces are enriched by colored marble and elaborate mosaics, and when viewing from the aisles and galleries, looking into the nave is dramatic thanks to all the interconnecting layered spaces and repeating, complex curved forms. Interestingly, however, the brick exterior of the building was left unadorned, representing a shell that houses a magnificent interior.
The Hagia Sophia examines the history of one of the world's most famous religious sites and analyzes the religion and politics that shaped its fate.

    Excellent and inexpensive
Turkey, Istanbul, historical research, historical places/events, Charles River Editors
A clear and concise detailing of the factors which caused this incredible building to come into being and be charged in many ways throughout the years. Much of its design and construction details are covered, as well as the structural changes which have come with age. I have the audio, but have seen the building highlighted on PBS and the History Channel. Joseph Chialastri gives a pleasant and clear narration.
