    Title: Auschwitz
Subtitle: A British POW's Eyewitness Account
    Author: Colin Rushton
    Narrator: Joe Jameson

Length: 6 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-28-13

    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1942 the young soldier Arthur Dodd was taken prisoner by the German Army and transported to Oswiecim in Polish Upper Silesia. The Germans gave it another name, now synonymous with mankinds darkest hours. They called it Auschwitz. Forced to do hard labour, starved and savagely beaten, Arthur thought his life would end in Auschwitz.
Determined to go down fighting, he sabotaged Nazi industrial work, risked his life to alleviate the suffering of the Jewish prisoners, and aided a partisan group planning a mass breakout. This shocking story sheds new light on the operations at the camp, exposes a hierarchy of prisoner treatment by the SS and presents the largely unknown story of military POWs held there.

Brits in Auschwitz - WHO KNEW? Well Told.
Would you consider the audio edition of Auschwitz to be better than the print version?
It might be easier to have skipped the parts at the end that did not really add to the story. I did not need corroboration to believe Arthur.
What other book might you compare Auschwitz to and why?
It is not really much different than other Auschwitz accounts, except that he was a British POW, not a Pole, Czech or Jew, yet was treated almost as poorly. I was one of the people unaware that POW's were kept there as well.
Which character as performed by Joe Jameson was your favorite?
Arthur was really the only recurring character, since most of the people he encountered disappeared or died. But I did come to love Arthur and feel his fear, uncertainty and other natural emotions.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Arthur was supposed to tell the government how much he was owed for his time in captivity, and he chose a paltry amount. When I look at our selfish society today, where people want millions for slipping in a grocery store, I am humbled by this man.
    Any additional comments?
Students of WWII history will hear a familiar tale, so if you want to fill in your education with another perspecitve, this one is a good choice. If you are new to the subject, know that this reality is a hard one to hear, as are all holocaust stories - but listen to these stories we MUST, lest anyone forget.
    A great read
If you could sum up Auschwitz in three words, what would they be?
Best book I have read about the Holocaust.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Auschwitz?
Takes one mans account of what really happened
What does Joe Jameson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
It was read with complete sensitivity
    Great read
Interesting insight to the life in a concentration camp. Harrowing at times but fascinating to hear how some people can be so evil without and reasoning. A must read to anyone interested in their subject

    Publisher's Summary:
A powerful, deeply moving narrative of hope reborn in the shadow of despair
Fifty years after it was bombed to rubble, Berlin is once again a city in which Jews gather for the Passover Seder. Paris and Antwerp have recently emerged as important new centers of Jewish culture. Small but proud Jewish communities are revitalizing the ancient centers of Budapest, Prague, and Amsterdam. These brave, determined Jewish men and women have chosen to settle - or remain - in Europe after the devastation of the Holocaust, but they have paid a price. Among the unexpected dangers, they have had to cope with an alarming resurgence of Nazism in Europe, the spread of Arab terrorism, and the impact of the Jewish state on European life.
Delving into the intimate stories of European Jews from all walks of life, Kurlansky weaves together a vivid tapestry of individuals sustaining their traditions, and flourishing, in the shadow of history. An inspiring story of a tenacious people who have rebuilt their lives in the face of incomprehensible horror, A Chosen Few is a testament to cultural survival and a celebration of the deep bonds that endure between Jews and European civilization.

5 star content, 2 star editing
A Chosen Few: The Resurrection of European Jewry is proving to be a very interesting book. It is not just a case study of the resurgence of Jewish life in Europe, post-WWI, but of the political histories of many Eastern European countries, as well. I am learning more about this time period that was ever taught in public schools in the late `60's.
My main problem with this Kindle version of the book is the extremely poor editing of the electronic version. It appears as though the pages were scanned with OCR readers, and the discrepancies were either not caught or were ignored by human proofreaders. Many of the Eastern European names of people and places were absolutely butchered - and not even in the same way from page to page. Luckily, most were repeated often enough in the same chapter that I could generally figure out these mis-spellings well enough to make sense of the text.
I want to continue reading Mr. Kurlansky's books as Kindle editions ( I read Salt in trade paperback format and thoroughly enjoyed it), and can only hope that the conversion to electronic format is better done.
Kurlansky sees and tells the truth
Many stories about Jews who returned to European cities after the Holocaust and tried to resume normal lives. Compared to the pre WWII population, only a small number of Jews returned and stayed. Their stories are amazing and some are very sad. In a number of countries Anti-Semitism resurfaced and again ruined lives. Mark Kurlansky tells the truth as he sees it even if it is painful.
The book was originally published in 1995. This paperback has a updated introduction at 2002. I only wish the whole text had been updated. Perhaps a sequel is in order.
    A MUST!
It is a must to read this book for a clear understanding of a chosen nation surviving among evil forces through world history. They deserve a country of their own.
    Very engaging and detailed
An excellent book describing Jewry in Europe post WW2. The book is engaging and personal, well worth the read.

    Title: In Mortal Hands
Subtitle: A Cautionary History of the Nuclear Age
    Author: Stephanie Cooke
    Narrator: Erik Davies
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 21 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-28-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
This landmark history of nuclear power is perfectly timed for today, when Americans are gravely concerned with nuclear terrorism, and a nuclear renaissance is seen as a possible solution to global warming. Few have truly come to terms with the complexities of an issue which may determine the future of the planet. Nuclear weapons, it was once hoped, would bring wars to a close; instead, they spurred a massive arms race that has recently expanded to include North Korea and Iran. Once seen as a source of unlimited electricity, nuclear reactors breed contamination and have been used as covers for secret weapons programs from India and Pakistan to Iraq and Iran.
The evolving story of nuclear power, as told by industry insider Stephanie Cooke, reveals the gradual deepening of our understanding of the pros and cons of this controversial energy source. Drawing on her unprecedented access, Cooke shows us how, time and again, the stewards of the nuclear age - the more-is-better military commanders and civilian nuclear boosters - have fallen into the traps of their own hubris and wishful thinking as they tried to manage the unmanageable. Their mistakes are on the verge of being repeated again, which is why this book deserves especially close attention now.

The Bad Dream hasn't gone away
Caution, indeed. This is a brilliant, chilling analysis of the existential danger we've learned to live with -- and forget. Kudos to Stephanie Cooke for asking us to open our eyes to the continuing risk that nuclear weapons pose to our survival. Well done.
"In Mortal Hands" is Enlightening and Captivating
Before I read "In Mortal Hands", Three Mile Island and Chernobyl as well as Hiroshima and Nagasaki had become distant memories. This book is a real eye-opener for those of us who aren't nuclear experts. Stephanie Cooke does a masterful job of interweaving the facts about nuclear energy and weaponry with the personal stories and comments of those who made the history. She convincingly shows that the potential horrors of nuclear war or nuclear-related environmental disasters are too real a probability. I'm sure anyone interested in energy, science, or contemporary politics will find her work as captivating and enlightening as I did.
Overview of the nuclear age-weapons and energy
    Book Review follows:
I would argue that Ms. Cook has written a relatively balanced overview on nuclear politics and governance since 1945.
"To some prescient observers, however, the bombing of Hiroshima signaled the end of democracy as it was experienced then and the beginning of the modern super-state. The natural order of things had been overturned for the new order to take hold and flourish, security and secrecy were essential. America became a classified nation, fearsome and fearful" pp2-3!
There is one estimate in the book that the U.S. alone has spent $5.5 Trillion on energy and weapons from the atom since before WWII. I believe this number is low by at least 30% and most honest evaluations indicate over $1 Trillion for environmental cleanup of the bomb making complex alone.
I mention this only to show that Ms. Cook's discussion of nuclear power and weapons and their history are very balanced and this book not a diatribe against either although proponents of both nuclear power and weapons may so believe.
    IMO discussion of U.S.

    Language: English
    Release date: 02-22-13
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
In Chocolate Islands: Cocoa, Slavery, and Colonial Africa, Catherine Higgs traces the early-twentieth-century journey of the Englishman Joseph Burtt to the Portuguese colony of So Tomé and Príncipe - the chocolate islands - through Angola and Mozambique, and finally to British Southern Africa. Burtt had been hired by the chocolate firm Cadbury Brothers Limited to determine if the cocoa it was buying from the islands had been harvested by slave laborers forcibly recruited from Angola, an allegation that became one of the grand scandals of the early colonial era. Burtt spent six months on So Tomé and Príncipe and a year in Angola. His five-month march across Angola in 1906 took him from innocence and credulity to outrage and activism and ultimately helped change labor recruiting practices in colonial Africa.
This beautifully written and engaging travel narrative draws on collections in Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Africa to explore British and Portuguese attitudes toward work, slavery, race, and imperialism. In a story still familiar a century after Burtt's sojourn, Chocolate Islands reveals the idealism, naivety, and racism that shaped attitudes toward Africa, even among those who sought to improve the conditions of its workers.
The book is published by Ohio University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
Catherine Higgs has combined careful academic research with the kind of skillful writing you'd expect in a good historical novel . The book is strikingly relevant to today's headlines. It is an excellent study for academics who want to know how to research at a professional level and then write well for the public, and it will strongly appeal to general readers. (Book News)
Higgs offers a well-researched examination of the dynamics of race, labor, and colonialism in the early part of the twentieth century. (Booklist)
Higgs takes us into the plantations of the chocolate islands and along the slave routes of southern Africa in this deeply researched and beautifully written investigation of slave, free, and coerced labor in early colonial Africa that began when Cadbury Brothers was accused of using cocoa harvested by slaves. (Robert Harms, H. J. Heinz Professor of History and African Studies, Yale University)
    Members Reviews:
    Sounds like someone's thesis
What disappointed you about Chocolate Islands?
The book was not a travelogue, nor was there any character development. It summarized thumb nail skecthes of the main character's visits to various cocoa plantations. The descriptions of the various plantations focused on production rates and census numbers. Never got a sense of the main character. Never got any detailed description of any of the other characters who crossed his path. His letters back to the Cadbury brothers seemed far from inditements of what was occurring, yet somehow the Cadbury brothers read them as such- not sure if the damning language was excerpted or if it was so understated I missed it. The story did not flow. Many of the characters appeared only briefly. It offered no sense of the place or the people.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
This was an academic paper read aloud. It would interest a very small handful of scholars who already had knowledge of the story and were concerned with minute details of plantation production.

    Publisher's Summary:
On the afternoon of 8 April 1802, in the remote southern ocean, two explorers had a remarkable chance encounter. Englishman Matthew Flinders and Frenchman Nicolas Baudin had been sent by their governments on the same quest: to explore the uncharted coast of the great south land and find out whether the west and east coasts, four thousand kilometres apart, were part of the same island. And so began the race to compile the definitive map of Australia.
These mens journeys were the culmination of two hundred years of exploration of the region by the Dutch - most famously Abel Tasman - the Portuguese, the Spanish and by Englishmen such as the colourful pirate William Dampier and, of course, James Cook. The three-year voyages of Baudin and Flinders would see them endure terrible hardships in the spirit of discovery. They suffered scurvy and heat exhaustion, and Flinders was shipwrecked and imprisoned - always knowing he was competing with the French to produce the first map of this mysterious continent.
Written from diaries and other first-hand accounts, this is the thrilling story of men whose drawings recorded countless previously unknown species and turned mythical creatures into real ones, and whose skill and determination enabled Terra Australis Incognita to become Australia.
    Critic Reviews:
"The story of Flinders is fascinating and Hill's narration of his expeditions is compelling ... The author's sensitive portraits of Flinders and other historical figures are one of the book's strengths." (

    Publisher's Summary:
It was the night of May 16th, 1943. Nineteen specially adapted Lancaster bombers take off from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, each with a huge nine thousand pound cylindrical bomb strapped underneath them. Their mission: to destroy three dams deep within the German heartland, which provide the lifeblood to the industries supplying the Third Reich's war machine.
From the outset, it was an almost impossible task, a suicide mission: to fly low and at night in formation over many miles of enemy occupied territory at the very limit of the Lancasters' capacity, and drop a new weapon, which had never been tried operationally before, at a precise height of just 60 feet from the water at some of the most heavily defended targets in Germany. More than that, the entire operation had to be put together in less than 10 weeks.
When visionary aviation engineer Barnes Wallis' concept of the bouncing bomb was green lighted, he hadn't even drawn up his plans for the weapon that was to smash the dams. What followed was an incredible race against time, which, despite numerous set-backs and against huge odds, became one of the most successful and game-changing bombing raids of all time.
    Members Reviews:
    Great Story Poor Narration
I have a wide interest in the history of the Second World War and was looking forward to listening to a modern and updated insight into the developments that lead to the development of the "bouncing bomb". The author has done a great job researching this history and the long road Barnes Wallis had to get his ideas excepted. Hoever I think he should have found someone else to do the narration maybe it's me but I found his narration incredibly irritating. It is all very well to be passionate but he reminded me of a true enthusiast who doesn't so much talk to you but lectures and hectors you with such passion that he turns you off the topic. I felt like I was listen a really forceful but fundamentally tiresome lecture. So obviously my taste, great subject but another narrator with some distance from the topic would have been much better.
A different take on a well known story
After seeing the movie a number of times I thought I knew the story of the dam busters. But James Holland's story brought to life both the story behind those that flew the missions (including people who were integral but not part of the movie) but also the story behind the making of the bombs and the people who made it possible.
The story is both very entertaining and educational.
    Riveting stuff - just superb
I had the extreme pleasure of hearing James Holland's talk about this book at the Borders Book Festival earlier in 2012. If knowledge, passion and enthusiasm was a sport, James would be on the top step of the podium. A fascinating yet brief introduction into a truly heroic effort to smash the dams.
This audio book was the next obvious step and I'm delighted to say it carries the same passion as the brief hour at the Book Festival.
A fascinating story of magnificent triumph over overwhelming adversity that changed the face of WWII. I had an inkling that these men were made of something 'a bit special', but I had no idea just how much the odds were stacked against this mission.
James Holland brings the fascinating story to life in this book.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
Founded 100 years ago by the inventor of dynamite, the Nobel Prize is the world's most celebrated and controversial honor. It grants its winners instant celebrity and acclaim for "service to mankind", despite accusations that it is too trendy, arbitrary, and narrow-minded. In examining both its fame and notoriety, Burton Feldman opens up the Nobel institution and process: how it originated, how it works, and how it is influenced by outside pressures (political, moral, personal, and academic).
The Nobel Prize is an extraordinary work that never fails to surprise, provoke, and entertain. This is the only book to explore every aspect of the prize: its founder, its aura, all its fields (literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, peace, and economics), and its laureates' personalities and rivalries, as well as the Nobel's controversies and blunders.
    Editorial Reviews:
A fascinating intellectual history of the most prestigious prizes in the world. From their establishment in the will of the inventor of dynamite through their controversies, scandals, and political intrigues, this searching analysis manages to be both detailed and accessible at the same time. Performer Burton Feldman's smooth tones make for an easy listen, and many listeners will enjoy the historical anecdotes and gossipy tidbits that enliven certain tales. The analysis of who did and didnt deserve to win is especially interesting; Gandhi never won, for one thing, while the inventor of the lobotomy did.
    Critic Reviews:
"Feldman relates the lively history of the most prestigious merit awards in consistently engaging fashion, touring its century-long existence forward from the will of dynamite mogul Alfred Nobel.... Feldman chronicles the evolving preferences of the Swedish awarding committees (e.g., their favoring of particle physics over astrophysics) and their quirks, exemplified by the truly bizarre awarding of the prize in medicine to the inventor of the lobotomy. In pointing out such mistakes, the mediocrities who got prizes, and the worthies - Emile Zola, Edwin Hubble, Mahatma Gandhi, etc. - who didn't, Feldman reveals the human side of the Nobels." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
A Fast Trip through the Nobel Prizes
Burton Feldman, hitherto a historian of ideas, here takes a stroll through the history of the most consistently prestigious accolade of the twentieth century- the Nobel Prize. The book is fast paced and gives a nice balance of gossip, information, and speculation, touching as well on the accomplishments of at least some of the laureates. The Nobels can be used as a cultural history of the last 100 years, or as a straight forward history, or as a gossipy expose-- scandals of the rich and prizegiving! Feldman tries to give a bit of each. His information on the prizes was accurate, so far as I could tell, and he does an honest job in trying to assess achievement in Peace, Lit, Physics, Chemistry and Econ. For some one with little background in these fields, he has accomplished a good deal. He misses some of the best anecdotes in Physics and Chem, clearly alien corn to him, but does a decent enough job.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the best-selling author of Agent Zigzag, the thrilling true story of the greatest and most successful wartime deception ever attempted. One April morning in 1943, a sardine fisherman spotted the corpse of a British solder floating in the sea off the coast of Spain and set in train a course of events that would change the course of the Second World War.
Operation Mincemeat was the most successful wartime deception ever attempted and certainly the strangest. It hoodwinked the Nazi espionage chiefs, sent German troops hurtling in the wrong direction, and saved thousands of lives by deploying a secret agent who was different in one crucial respect, from any spy before or since: he was dead.
His mission: to convince the Germans that instead of attacking Sicily, the Allied armies planned to invade Greece. The brainchild of an eccentric RAF officer and a brilliant Jewish barrister, the great hoax involved an extraordinary cast of characters including a famous forensic pathologist, a gold-prospector, an investor, a beautiful secret service secretary, a submarine captain, three novelists, a transvestite English spymaster, an irascible admiral who loved fly-fishing, and a dead Welsh tramp.
Using fraud, imagination and seduction, Churchill's team of spies spun a web of deceit so elaborate and so convincing that they began to believe it themselves. The deception started in a windowless basement beneath Whitehall. It travelled from London to Spain to Germany. And it ended up on Hitler's desk. Ben Macintyre, bestselling author of AGENT ZIGZAG, weaves together private documents, photographs, memories, letters and diaries as well as newly released material from the intelligence files of MI5 and Naval Intelligence, to tell for the first time the full story of Operation Mincemeat.
    Critic Reviews:
'A rollicking read for all those who enjoy a spy story so fanciful that Ian Fleming - himself an officer in Montagu's wartime department - would never have dared to invent it' Max Hastings'. (Sunday Times)
'Ben Macintyre, also the author of the acclaimed AGENT ZIGZAG, is fast becoming a one-man industry in these updated tales of cunning, bravery and skulduggery. With his mix of meticulous research and a good hack's eye for narrative, it is hard to think of a better guide to keep beckoning us back to that fascinating world'. (Observer)
'Even more spellbinding than his previous story of wartime espionage, AGENT ZIGZAG, with a cast-list every bit as dotty and colourful ... Macintyre is a master of the thumbnail character sketch.' (Mail on Sunday)
'Astonishing ... sheds riveting new light on this breathtaking plan.' (Daily Mail)
    Members Reviews:
    More than Mincemeat
John Lee always seems to read well. While this account is packed with interesting information, it was at times rambling, with some details repeated again and again. Perhaps it was Ben Macintyre's style of writing I found annoying. The task was no doubt difficult. There are still stories within stories, one mystery within another and many of these could be stand alone accounts.
