what an interesting audiobook

fascinating material, authoriative and delivered in a very easy to listen to style. very good value for money!

This isn't a bad lecture

The lecture on a whole isn't bad, but rather, lacked focus, the lecturing style can also be improved upon somewhat, still, one can learn much about the core essence of Religious Historical scholarship by using this set of lectures as a starting point.

Entertaining and informative

I was drawn to this after thoroughly enjoying Prof. Peters lectures on Chritianity, Judaism and Islam. Prof Peters' deep knowledge and casual delivery make for a structured, clear and entertaining lecture series. I hope there is more to come from him.

Truly awful.

FE Peters reminds me of one of the "god professors" of yore. In other words, he seems to think that by his very presence us poor, unintellectual plebians benefit. Life has moved on, however, and it rather seems to me that FE Peters has been given a bottle of gin for each lecture and been given permission to move round and round, to great redundancy, the point of his lectures. If we are lucky, he give us one point of value. If not, we are left without the veritable crumb. He repeats himself ad nauseum, duplicating and triplicating and quadruplicating his message to the point where one sees this audio as a potential cure for insomnia rather than of any educational value. Quite simply, this is embarrassing.

i was looking for a scientific in depth analysis for historical information about these 2 major historical figures , like it or not there principles , and lives have shaped man kind

instead I was disappointing with a how to do a historical analysis thesis with very little substance about the two men

not to mention that i think it was not very accurate

"Kings & Queens of England" is a series of vignettes taking you on a whirlwind tour from the Norman conquest to modern times. Derek Jacobi's narration is, as ever, excellent. K&Q is a useful, concise review of British history with never a dull moment. It may even inspire you to read deeper biographies at a later time.

Bordering on seditious; very enjoyable.

If only there was a book like this when I did history I may have taken note. Many a true word spoken in jest and despite some wonderfully funny observations there is a subtext of tragedy at mans ineptitude. Can?t rate it highly enough.

A good laugh but with all the facts

I love this book. It covers the whole of our history, but without me falling asleep once! It's very difficult to keep up with all the changing of dynasties and ages that went on in our past, but this book manages it, and throws in modern comparisons that make you smile, and make it all make sense.

This book kept me entertained all the way through, a pleasure. I recommend to all.

Wheres the unabidged version

Would you consider the audio edition of An Utterly Impartial History of Britain to be better than the print version?

No unfortunately the abridged version is like star wars without stars or even wars.

What did you like best about this story?

I love the quirky narrative that will make you laugh time and time again.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I think the author narrating the book is perfect and should be standard with exeptions obviously. EG phillip carlos, may he rest in peace.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Do you like history? do you want to be interested in history but cant stick that boring man/woman trying to make it fun but failing constantly? this is the new beginning

awesome book and narrative just too damn short

A Fantastic and Accessible History of Britain

I haven't heard the audio version of this but I have read the book and I think it's fantastic. Insightful, enlightening, informative and above all entertaining; John O'Farrell has brought all his wit and human insight to bear on the chequered history of these fair isles.

In respect to the previous reviewer?s points, I realise that everyone is entitled to their own view and certainly humour is subjective but to say that John O'Farrell has no aptitude for humour is largely unfair. I'd recommend you look up his fiction books such as \"May Contain Nuts\" and \"The Best A Man Can Get\" as well as his collections of writings for various newspapers to get a real insight in to just how much aptitude this man does have for humour.

I would recommend this book in addition to any other book on world history one listens to. The testing part makes for a much better understanding and rememberance. It is clean cut, fact driven and strives for a deep understanding of the events and styles of societies throughout the centuries.

Start with this book or top off your other world history books with this one.

This is the single best short presentation on Islam I have ever heard. I have been studying Islam for a long time and this one presentation is about as good a start as you will find.

Nothing I already knew.

What disappointed you about Ireland?

Firstly, this is a book about Irish history, WHY on earth is it being narrated by an American and an American with an accent that does not fit the history.

Secondly, WHY is it that the English accents are so Plummy, listen to live news recordings of the day, the English Never spoke that way.

Thirdly, WHY is it that the accents of the Irish were in what I would consider very poor Belfast Brogue, I grew up in Belfast and I can assure you that accents like these never existed, they appear to be just a bit extreme, in some respects quite off-putting.

Would you ever listen to anything by Wendy McElroy again?

Whilst some of the historic information was true the way in which it is delivered does not seem to fit the reality of the events, it is as if the author has copy and pasted information from other books...For me it did not feel right.

How could the performance have been better?

The use of real local people from the area the book is concerned with and using accents that are not over exaggerated, I do not recall hearing very much Southern Irish accents, and indeed the subject of Irish history is all about Southern and Northern Ireland.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Annoyance followed by disappointment to a degree.

In Shinjuku ward, Tokyo has skyscrapers that look like they belong in Manhattan, while in Minato, the Tokyo Tower instantly brings to mind the Eiffel Tower. To the west, the ward of Shibuya is full of enough neon lights to make Las Vegas blush, and the National Diet Building in Chiyoda houses Japan's legislature and looks like a capitol building tourists might find across American states.
