Title: Neuropathy and Myopathy in Treated Thyroid Disease
Subtitle: Hypothyroid and Hyperthyoid Nerve Pain and Muscle Weakness
    Author: James M. Lowrance
    Narrator: James M. Lowrance
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-20-14
    Publisher: James M. Lowrance
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Thyroid disease patients can experience a number of different complications as a result of their hypothyroid (underactive thyroid) or hyperthyroid (overactive thyroid) conditions. Two of these complications are nerve pain and dysfunction, referred to as "peripheral neuropathy" and muscle weakness with possible atrophy (shrinkage of muscles), referred to as "thyroid myopathy".
In some cases, these two problems that are co-morbid to thyroid disorders can coexist, so that they are occurring at the same time and this may be referred to as "neuromuscular disease". This is a symptom-aspect that has less information available on it via online medical search, than do the more common thyroid-related problems, such as weight gain, joint pain, and fatigue.
Within the chapters of this book, that follow, I hope to present to the listener a general understanding of these often debilitating and potentially very serious manifestations of thyroid disease, affecting the nerves and muscles of the body, including the treatments available for them. I present this information to you as a fellow hypothyroid patient with autoimmune thyroiditis and co-morbid peripheral neuropathy and myopathy, which inspired me to search and research the information contained in the chapters.

    Good Info
It was comforting to know, that even though my doctor had no experience with patients suffering from neuropathy with newly discovered thyroid disease, this author has experienced the same troubling symptoms that I'm having. It was simply and clearly written and a quick read. Though not a doctor, he does try to understand the cause by studying research in the areas of neuropathy and hypothyroidism, and also uses his and others' life experiences to suggest ways to treat and cope with this problem.
    Five Stars
Explains the other issues we have in accordance with thyroid disorders.
    Not much here...
This book would have made a nice webpage. It is SHORT. I wish I had known that I was paying $3.25 for what is essentially an essay with "chapters" instead of section headings.
If you have had thyroid problems or peripheral neuropathy for more than a couple of years, you will probably already be familiar with the ideas herein (balance your thyroid meds, check for B12/vit-D/magnesium deficiencies, exercise).
The author also has a theory about the Epstein-Barr virus triggering thyroid disease; however, since 95% of the population has EBV, I'm not convinced there's a connection.
This little "book" was simply not worth the purchase price to me, considering how much similar content is available for free on the web.
    OK
I LIKED IT BUT IT DOESNT SOLVE MY PROBLEM.I NEED MORE INFORMATION THAN WHAT THIS BOOK GIVES ME.THANKS ANYWAY. EVA

    Publisher's Summary:
Hyperthyroidism is a term that simply means a person has developed an overactive thyroid gland. The metabolism of a person with hyperthyroidism is sped up from too much thyroid hormone in their system, so that everything in the body is running at overdrive. When this happens, the person will experience hyperthyroid symptoms.
The vast majority of people with hyperthyroidism (95%) experience Graves' disease as the cause. This is an autoimmune disease caused by antibodies created by the immune system that attach to the thyroid gland and stimulate it to produce excessive amounts of hormone. Graves' disease and other causes of hyperthyroidism are addressed as well as detailed discussion on symptoms diagnosis and treatments.

    Publisher's Summary:
How much does thyroid disease affect the quality of life of those who suffer them? Is this really an important or worthwhile aspect to consider and address? In my belief as a Thyroid Patient Advocate being treated for autoimmune hypothyroidism and having corresponded with 1,000s of other patients with both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid conditions since 2003, I absolutely believe this to be an important aspect.
More education has become available in regard to thyroid disease in general over the past two decades and the quality-of-life for treated thyroid patients, deserves as much attention in my opinion as do aspects of diagnosis and treatment. Much of the public lacks understanding in the fact that thyroid disease patients can be greatly affected by their disease with symptoms of thyroid hormone imbalance affecting every part of their bodies and emotions.
In this audiobook I look at different aspects of the effects thyroid disease has on its patients and at the importance of better optimized treatment and coping-methods that can help patients regain a better quality-of-life. This audiobook is not intended to be an extensive manual but is intended to contain information most often sought by laypersons on the subject.

Informative information from a fellow suffer
What did you like best about Improving Life for Thyroid Patients? What did you like least?
The authors reassurance that the symptoms of this most frustrating condition is not a result of being a hypochondriac. The narration was dreadful and I am normally a fan of authors narrating their own material.
Would you be willing to try another one of James M. Lowrances performances?
    No.
Could you see Improving Life for Thyroid Patients being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    I would hope not.

Such a pleasure to hear and identify bird calls!
A great way to learn bird songs.
A rare book with an even more rare CD included. Borror was an exceptional talent. It is worth your while to check out his life. My only complaint is that each track of the CD has five or six birds, so you have to figure out how to find each bird. This is not hard, but it was avoidable. If you want to learn bird songs, this is one great way to start. I wish there were more books in this series
Incorrect Description=Useless as Bird ID Book
See how the description says "includes CD" it didn't. So as a bird song identification book, it's useless.
    learn bird songs
Helps me identify bird songs. Bird 'talk' is a little like a foreign language, but this helps you to identify some birds by their songs. I would also use a visual guidebook (which I do). At first my husband thought I was a little annoying for trying to identify birds by visual appearance and bird songs, but this summer he has been asking me what different birds are, so I think he's starting to share my interest. Learn about the world around you, it's interesting and fun.
    Common Bird Songs
This CD may have an "old" copyright but the sound quality is first rate and the booklet extremely informative.
Best of all it almost always includes a number of songs for each species and from different birds -- this repetition is most valuable and gives the student an idea of the variation he may encounter. Even the "antique"
spectographs in the back are fun to study.
This is my foremost recommendation for a "first CD" for the bird song student -- a drawback is that the student should be eastern or central US. The price is wonderful.

Title: Exceptional Creativity in Science and Technology
    Subtitle: Individuals, Institutions, and Innovations
    Author: Andrew Robinson
    Narrator: Dave Clark
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-19-13
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
In the evolution of science and technology, laws governing exceptional creativity and innovation have yet to be discovered. The historian Thomas Kuhn, in his influential study The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, noted that the final stage in a scientific breakthrough such as Albert Einstein's theory of relativity - that is, the most crucial stage - was "inscrutable". The same is still true half a century later.
Yet, there has been considerable progress in understanding many of the stages and facets of exceptional creativity and innovation. In Exceptional Creativity in Science and Technology editor Andrew Robinson gathers together a diverse group of contributors to explore this progress. This new collection arises from a symposium with the same title held at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), in Princeton. In addition to scientists, engineers, and an inventor, the audiobook's fifteen contributors include an economist, entrepreneurs, historians, and sociologists, all working at leading institutions, including Bell Laboratories, Microsoft Research, Oxford University, Princeton University, and Stanford University. Each contributor brings a unique perspective to the relationships between exceptional scientific creativity and innovation by individuals and institutions.
The diverse list of disciplines covered, the high-profile contributors (including two Nobel laureates), and their fascinating insights into this overarching question - how exactly do we make breakthroughs? - will make this collection of interest to anyone involved with the creative process in any context, but it will be especially appealing to listeners in scientific and technological fields.
    Critic Reviews:
A fascinating work which explores the origins of some of the greatest scientific institutions in the world and their innovations which have changed all our lives and had a remarkable effect in boosting the economies of the countries in which they were developed. While this fascinating story of the complex evolution of great science and its institutions will be of particular interest to the scientific community, given their great importance to all of us for the future it should attract a much broader audience in particular representing education, commerce, and politics. I wish it all the success that it deserves. (Sir David Weatherall, FRS, Regius Professor of Medicine Emeritus, Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford)

Length: 8 hrs and 9 mins

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
People have searched for the fountain of youth everywhere from Bimini to St. Augustine. But for a steadfast group of scientists, the secret to a long life lies elsewhere: In the lowly lab worm. By suppressing the function of just a few key genes, these scientists were able to lengthen worms lifespans up to tenfold, while also controlling the onset of many of the physical problems that beset old age. As the global population ages, the potential impact of this discovery on society is vast - as is the potential for profit.
With The Longevity Seekers, science writer Ted Anton takes listeners inside this tale that began with worms and branched out to snare innovative minds from California to Crete, investments from big biotech, and endorsements from TV personalities like Oprah and Dr. Oz. Some of the research was remarkable, such as the discovery of an enzyme in humans that stops cells from aging. And some, like an oft-cited study touting the compound resveratrol, found in red wine - proved highly controversial, igniting a science war over truth, credit, and potential profit. As the pace of discovery accelerated, so too did powerful personal rivalries and public fascination, driven by the hope that a longer, healthier life was right around the corner. Anton has spent years interviewing and working with the scientists at the frontier of longevity science, and this audiobook offers a behind-the-scenes look at the state-of-the-art research and the impact it might have on global public health, society, and even our friends and family.
With spectacular science and an unforgettable cast of characters, The Longevity Seekers has all the elements of a great story and sheds light on discoveries that could fundamentally reshape human life.

    Extremely brief!!!!
The chapters were very short and brief. It's great for those who just want an extremely quick review of terminology and biological processes that they are fully aware of versus some who are about to start taking their baby steps into the field. Overall great audio..
    No "Follow along Manual" included
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The title states a "Follow along Manual", indicating a manual with what I had hoped would be images, etc. No supplemental material is included for download. The information on the audio is good but images of some of the concepts would make all the difference. I think this will serve as a great review after I have studied using other materials.

    Publisher's Summary:
Our sensory systems give us a rich and detailed experience of the world. They are something that we are intimately familiar with - we use them every minute of our waking lives - yet surprisingly enough, we often take them for granted. It is true that we rely on our senses for knowing all about the external world, yet they are even more than that. Our senses are essential to who we are; they are part and parcel of every thought and emotion that we can express.
Many are familiar with the commonly known senses - sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. But most do know realize that humans have other senses beyond these. This is not, however, a spooky "sixth sense" of extrasensory perception. But humans do have a different kind of sixth sense. We also have a seventh sense, and it can be debated that we have even more. These additional senses are in fact specialized systems to detect other aspects of the world that we rarely consider, though they are an important part of our everyday life.
Throughout the animal kingdom, there are examples of organisms that have developed the ability to sense what is necessary in the ecological niche that they find themselves in. Bats, and independently, many marine mammals like dolphins, have developed the ability to use sound to navigate their environments. Bees, ants, and some fish see light far beyond what humans are capable of perceiving. Many aquatic animals can sense electrical currents. And an increasing number of animals are being added to the list of those who can take advantage of the Earth's magnetic fields to navigate over long distances. Although humans have a broad range of sensory experience, it really is just a tiny fraction of what is out there.
This series intriguing series of lectures takes a wide survey of the world of the senses beyond vision, exploring how our senses and our brain enable us to hear, smell, touch, taste, balance, and otherwise perceive the world around us.
