Why do organisms grow old and die? What are the theories of aging? Does the Free Radical Theory of Aging still stack up? How do cells decide when to divide, differentiate or die? What factors accelerate the aging process? This essay takes a look at these issues and would thus be useful to students who want to know more about the processes that control cell death. The essay also documents the more extreme measures that some people have taken in the pursuit of eternal youth. There are many useful references to other pertinent work.

I bought this for kindle and it was almost a complete waste of money. If you took biology or genetics 101, you'll find this really boring. There are a few citations of other research that are somewhat interesting. There are many examples when the author tries, and fails, to be funny by bringing in pop culture, making fun of Botox, etc. don't buy

Title: The Red Hourglass: Lives of the Predators

    Narrator: Keith Sellon-Wright
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Gordon D. Grice
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Snake venom that digests human flesh. A building cleared of every living thing by a band of tiny spiders. An infant insect eating its living prey from within, saving the vital organs for last. These are among the deadly feats of natural engineering you'll witness in The Red Hourglass, prize-winning author Gordon Grice's masterful, poetic, often dryly funny exploration of predators he has encountered around his rural Oklahoma home.
Grice is a witty and intrepid guide through a world where mating ends in cannibalism, where killers possess toxins so lethal as to defy our ideas of a benevolent God, where spider remains, scattered like "the cast-off coats of untidy children", tell a quiet story of violent self-extermination. It's a world you'll recognize despite its exotic strangeness - the world in which we live. Unabashedly stepping into the mix, Grice abandons his role as objective observer with beguiling dark humor - collecting spiders and other vermin, decorating a tarantula's terrarium with dollhouse furniture, or forcing a battle between captive insects because he deems one "too stupid to live".
Kill. Eat. Mate. Die. Charting the simple brutality of the lives of these predators, Grice's starkly graceful essays guide us toward startling truths about our own predatory nature.
The Red Hourglass brings us face to fanged face with the inadequacy of our distinctions between normal and abnormal, dead and alive, innocent and evil.
    Members Reviews:
Excellent way to spend a day.
As always Grice has the capacity to weave a spellbinding tale from the most commonplace and overlooked creatures of our lives and the little known facts about them. He writes matter of factly and without overusing scientific terms often describing creatures and events in layman's words and the glee of a child at play all of which contrast perfectly the little devils he is describing and their paticular empires of hell.

    Title: Is Biocentrism Dead?
Subtitle: Understanding the Universe and Nature
    Author: Raj Bogle
    Narrator: Valerie Gilbert
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-23-14
    Publisher: Lloyd Lewis
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Is Biocentrism Dead? It is a topic that many find a bit off-putting but it is a question that many individuals are starting to pose as they become wiser. The book explains what biocentrism is and how the tenets that surround this concept came into being. This is a book that the inquiring mind will appreciate, thus it is ideal for the individuals who want to learn more about themselves and the world around them. The author gradually disseminates the information to the listener, allowing them to fully understand what biocentrism really means.
    Members Reviews:
    Total rubbish
Trying to capitalize on the original, this is vacuous and dull. Do not waste your money like I did
    Interesting philosophy
This is an interesting little book on biocentrism. It is great for those who havent ventured into this philosophy before (such as myself). The concept is well explained along with the history of how it came about.
What I took away from this book is that biocentrism puts biological life at the center of everything. This philosophy incorporates a deep respect for any life, human, non-human, plant, etc. Humans are a part of the world, and the larger universe, instead of being held above or aloof from it. As a biologist, there was much in this book that I resonated with.
The book goes on to contemplate what was before the universe and gets rather philosophical, contemplating if life itself birthed the universe instead of the universe birthing life. While this book places biocentrism as a science and a theory, I dont feel that it is quite there. A theory is testable, and this concept hasnt been pushed that far yet. Some may place this idea in the realm of psuedoscience.
Over all, it was an educational piece. Even if you dont subscribe to this concept as a theory, it is still worthy of contemplation. I very much like the idea of biology being at the center of everything, instead of physics or chemistry.
Narration: Valerie Gilbert was a great narrator for this book. She performed in a clear voice with excellent pacing. She had the right mix of questioning and enthusiasm.

Max Hastings is best known as an acclaimed journalist and military historian. But what is perhaps less well known is his love of the countryside and its pursuits, above all fishing and shooting, which he indulges as often as he can escape his urban working environment.
In this classic selection of gentle, contemplative musings, Max Hastings shares some of his favourite rural moments; tramping the snipe bogs of Waterford; dogging hedges in Hampshire and moors in Sutherland; casting a fly from Scotland to Iceland and Alaska; and shooting in India and the west of Ireland. Combining a journalist's knack for storytelling with the enthusiasm of the dedicated amateur, Outside Days is the perfect companion for anyone who revels in the freedom of the outdoors.
Max Hastings is an acclaimed journalist and author of over 20 books. He is renowned for his works of military history, such as Bomber Command and Das Reich. But he is a country boy at heart and he enjoys fishing and shooting as often as he can escape to the great outdoors.

Good story about life in England
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this but make sure the person knows this is strictly about England. It is an interesting, comical, informative book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Outside Days?
There were many memorable funny moments in the recollections, some of which probably shouldn't be recollected in a public forum but are entertaining.
Have you listened to any of Cameron Stewarts other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to this narrator before but he is very good however it seems to how many I have listened to on Audible, English narrators seem to be the bulk of the folks who narrate. For this book it is very appropriate and a seemingly perfect narrator but I wish audible would have a few more non-English or book appropriate narrators.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I had no extreme reaction to this book. It was purely entertaining.
only good if you enjoy hunting, shooting and fishi

More than just a work of scientific or cultural history, it is a biography of the single most important symbol of our humanity.
Erudite, witty, and unexpected, The Sublime Engine makes the heart leap off the page.

Interesting little book about the history of the heart, spanning what humans used to think it was/did, to its metaphorical significance, to its workings and how it fails. Author deftly pivots from science to art to philosophy in chronicling the human heart. Worth a read for those who like to mix their science with humanities.

    Title: Tweet of the Day
Subtitle: A Year of Britain's Birds from the Acclaimed Radio 4 Series
    Author: Brett Westwood, Stephen Moss
    Narrator: Brett Westwood, Stephen Moss
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-01-14
    Publisher: John Murray Press
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Imagine a jazz musician, improvising on a theme. Then imagine that he is able to play half a dozen instruments - not one after another, but almost simultaneously, switching effortlessly between instruments and musical styles with hardly a pause for breath. If you can countenance that, you are halfway towards appreciating the extraordinary song of the nightingale....
Wherever we are, there are birds. And wherever there are birds, there is birdsong. It's always a pleasure (and a relief) to hear sounds that prove the world's still spinning: whether it's the sighing of migrating redwings on a damp October night, the twitter of swallows fresh in from South Africa in April, or the call of the cuckoo in May.
Based on the scripts of BBC Radio 4's beloved year-long series, and distilling two lifetimes' knowledge, insight, and enthusiasm into this recording, Brett Westwood and Stephen Moss take you month by month through the year, and the changing lives of our favourite birds.
From peregrines swapping sea-cliffs for skyscrapers to swifts spending almost their entire lives on the wing; from charms of goldfinches to murmurations of starlings; from ptarmigans thriving in the Highland snow to the bright-green parakeets thronging London's parks; this audiobook is packed full of extraordinary insights and memorable facts. Tweet of the Day is a book for everyone who loves Britain's birds, and this audiobook contains over 150 birdsong recordings to bring them to life.
Produced by arrangement with the BBC. Birdsong recordings copyright Geoff Sample and Wildsong.
This is the audio version of the expanded book of Tweet of the Day read by the authors, not the radio series itself. This audio book contains 193 birdsong recordings.
    Critic Reviews:
"Tweet of the Day: great idea, great title. Why didn't I think of it?" (Bill Oddie)
"This lovely book is a perfect introduction to British birdsong, informative and hugely enjoyable, so stop tweeting and learn how to listen to the experts." (Chris Packham)
"Brett Westwood and Stephen Moss read from their delightfully varied and quirky scripts...A wonderful companion on a long drive or walk, this is an eye and ear-opening book." (Christina Hardyment, The Times)

Buy the hardback, download the original podcasts
The original radio programmes are great and (as at the time of this review) can all still be downloaded through iTunes free of charge. The physical book "Tweet of the Day" is fine as an add-on, and the six 5-star reviews which appear here on Audible all (rather bizarrely) relate to that, NOT to the audiobook, which has not previously been reviewed. The audiobook is a bit of a disappointment. Unsurprisingly, the authors don't deliver their own writing as well as their celebrity guests did in the original programmes; and more importantly, the amount of birdsong played in the audiobook is very restricted, generally just a couple of seconds at the start of each bird's section, rather than played as a background throughout. The whole feel of being out in the field - key to the original programmes' appeal - is lost. Altogether, it's a bit of a mystery to me why the audiobook has been produced at all.
great way to learn your birds in 5 min snatches
engaging. informative, fun and good sound clips.

  • Are Dolphins Really Smart? Audiobook by Justin Gregg

    Title: Are Dolphins Really Smart?
Subtitle: The Mammal Behind the Myth
    Author: Justin Gregg
    Narrator: Joel Richards
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-07-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
How intelligent are dolphins? Is their communication system really as complex as human language? And are they as friendly and peaceful as they are made out to be? The Western world has had an enduring love affair with dolphins since the early 1960s, with fanciful claims of their 'healing powers' and 'super intelligence'. Myths and pseudoscience abound on the subject.
Justin Gregg weighs up the claims made about dolphin intelligence and separates scientific fact from fiction. He puts our knowledge about dolphin behavior and intelligence into perspective, with comparisons to scientific studies of other animals, especially the crow family and great apes.
He gives fascinating accounts of the challenges of testing what an animal with flippers and no facial expressions might be animal behavior, Gregg challenges many of the widespread beliefs about dolphins, while also inspiring the listener with the remarkable abilities common to many of the less glamorized animals around us - such as chickens.
    Members Reviews:
    Mixed feelings
I set out after seeing a few of the things mocked within these pages (e.g., the Blue Planet special) to get a solid "state of the art" on dolphin research. I've loved whales and dolphins for as long as I can remember, in part because their lives seem so foreign and unimaginable, and I wondered what we really know.
I think I got what I was looking for, but you have to read between the lines somewhat. In truth, this book should be described, as the author puts it toward the end, as "an overview of just how little we really do know when it comes to the science of the dolphin mind and dolphin behavior as it pertains to a discussion of intelligence" (admittedly that blurb wouldn't sell as many books). That's it, though: we can't say dolphins are "smart," for sure. We can definitely say they're not the dumbest out there, but not how smart they are, or why, or much of anything, apparently.
The vast number of assessments in this book, as the author to his credit notes, could be levelled at any animal, and therein lies the problem. One feels the poor dolphin has been singled out. This is perhaps fair given the dolphin's new agey status, but it has the effect of reading as if the author simply doesn't like dolphins or the people who like them (if you like dolphins, apparently, you're John Lilly), which makes you suspicious as a reader. Unfairly, as it turns out, because the book is actually fairly balanced about the evidence, at the very least, and documents its sources thoroughly. As a result, the occasionally snarky asides and the book's strange position that arguing for better treatment of dolphins is somehow a major problem in need of correction (or that dolphins are being promoted at the expense of other species somehow) does it a disservice. Bottlenose dolphins in particular get the treatment, perhaps because of "Flipper" and the Sea World image they have. The lines are blurred somewhat there, with bottlenoses standing in for what the author points out is really a vast range of species.
Despite realising how much I don't know about communication in general or animal communication in particular, I do know just enough about linguistics to think the discussion there was cursory in terms of analogies to human situations.

    A good idea and listen.
Where does Wild Scotland rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
somewhere in the middle. Okay, but not my favourite.
What other book might you compare Wild Scotland to, and why?
It's the same in concept as Wild London but different sounds.
What does Fiona McCarthy bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
What a stupid question. This book wouldn't work in print. the sounds of animals need to be listened to. No phonetics can really come close to the natural sounds. Fiona doesn't do anything other than announce each species.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
I think this is a good idea and I enjoyed listening to it. again, I've heard the mammalian sounds before in other books.

"The BL excels at this sort of unclassifiable thing and I love them for it (as I do the walled sanctuary of the St John Wilson building in London, and that in bl.uk, their own high-level domain, there is a way in which a library is on a par with a government). These recordings are best thought of as sound art, and act as both documentation and interpretation, but also a celebration of the British coast in all its glorious, cold dampness."
