A life-affirming nature diary - with something amazing to see and experience on every day of the year - from award-winning authors and Springwatch experts Brett Westwood and Stephen Moss.
From blackbirds, beavers and beetles to tawny owls, natterjack toads and lemon slugs. Every day of the year, winter or summer, in every corner of the British Isles, there's plenty to see if you know where - and how - to look. From encounters with the curious black redstart, which winters on our rocky coasts, to the tiny green snowdrop shoots that are the first sign that spring might be round the corner. And from the blossom-time and dawn choruses of April and May into the abundant noisiness of summer, where days start with hawker dragonflies and drowsy bumblebees and end with glowworms and ghost moths, to autumn, when in the early morning mist of London's Richmond Park, male red deer lock horns in competition for a mate. Nature is always full of surprises - whether it's the strange behaviour of clothes moths or the gruesome larder of the strike.
Distilling two lifetimes' knowledge, expert insight and enthusiasm, award-winning authors and passionate naturalists Brett Westwood and Stephen Moss take us through the year day by day, sharing the unexpected delights that we can experience in our skies, beaches, rivers, fields, forests and back gardens. There are all kinds of adventures waiting on your doorstep any day of the year; all you need is Wonderland.

Thousands of varieties of plants are rapidly disappearing in the United States, especially non-hybrid types of garden vegetables. These are called heirloom varieties, and they're difficult, if not impossible, to buy from commercial sources. The seeds are instead often passed from gardener to gardener, often in families, and they represent an irreplaceable genetic heritage that is being lost. We examine the reasons these seeds are disappearing and the efforts underway to preserve them.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Human Papillomavirus, or HPV, is a common virus that touches billions of human beings in one way or another from a tiny wart on the hand to invasive cancer. HPV can be found worldwide, yet most people who are infected never show any symptoms. The virus can "hide" for years from a person's immune system, with no apparent ill effects, and then awaken and trigger deadly disease. Producer Jean Snedegar visits virology labs where researchers are trying to understand how the virus works and who it affects. She talks to women and men who are now recovering from HPV induced cancers. In an interview with Nobel Laureate Harold zur Hausen, who first identified PV as the cause of cervical cancer, she reviews the need for vaccines. This is the story of a virus that often doesn't act as scientists expect it to a puzzling, paradoxical virus.

    Release date: 03-24-17
    Publisher: MadeMark Publishing
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
In Strange Company, a delightful collection of short essays, Jean Ryan brings us closer to the natural world. From lizards to lady bugs, from the inscrutable sloth to the resplendent quetzal, Ryan reveals some of our commonalities with earth's creatures and hints at the lessons we might learn from them.
Do lizards fall in love? What do sloths think about all day? Why is the blood of a horseshoe crab so valuable? Do starlings flock for fun? Can a parrot serve as a therapist? Do turtles ever grow bored with their long lives? Why would a crow foster a kitten? Can snails be fearless?
These are just a few of the questions Ryan poses in Strange Company as she invites the listener on a wild journey through land, sea and sky. While these essays acknowledge our responsibility to Mother Nature, the insights they offer are affirmative and heartening. With her precise, elegant prose, Ryan draws us into the tantalizing world of animals and their oddities.

    A delightful little book
This book was informative and entertaining.
I learned so much about the awesome creatures that inhabit our world.
I was given this book in exchange for my honest review.
I recommend this book for anyone who has a love for the lil critters
Interesting tales of nature and history
Strange company appeared to be and initially introduced itself as a romp through tales of animal companions of disparate natures. It quickly devolved into random yet interesting tales of various animals, historical caves etc. I thoroughly enjoyed it though I give the 4 stars as it was not the tale I expected from the title, the cover or from the introduction. Had it been the tale portrayed or has the portrayal been presented differently then I would have provided 5 stars. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Fascinating and Beautiful
This is a really interesting, inspiring, and informative documentary book, beautifully brought to life by Nikiya Palombi. If you are interested in the animal kingdom and in human nature, you will love this!
    Amazing
Wow what a truly amazing world we live in. This book tells of unique creatures that live around us. The narrator does a wonderful job of relaying this story. I was gifted this audiobook with the understanding I would leave an honest review.
    Re-kindle your love for nature
Jean offers a look into some of the many interesting and unique behaviors and life-cycles to be found in the animal kingdom.
Each section is short and captivating and there are many links back to humans and how we live our lives. Examples come from land, sky and sea and from many categories of animals and insects.
Worth listening to several times, I just wish it was longer I wasn't read for it to be over.
Nikiya does a great job of showing Jean's obvious enthusiasm for the natural world, drawing you in even further.
Note: This book was provided free by the author/narrator/publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

I wanted to enjoy this book
I wanted to enjoy this book, but it didn't quite sit right. The author seems to know a lot of facts about megaladon, but very little about paleontology. (Or teaching.) Like his hero, the author has a lot of imagination, as he tries to bring megaladon to life for his readers. However his poor grasp of science kind of kills it. With some editing, I think this book would be quite enjoyable. (A good editor would catch some of the grammatical quirks and repetitions, and maybe help fill the plot holes.)

    Publisher: Dolman Scott Publishing
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
These are the hilarious adventures of a dog lover extraordinaire
Listening to this brilliant reading by Fenella Lee of this tale of life with all things dog - especially Airedale - will transport you to a gentle, fun-loving universe where dog-driven disaster is only a short walk away.
Due to his obsession with hedgehogs, Mr Mac was lead walked in the garden first thing in the morning before the sun was quite up and as soon as it was dusk, when hedgehogs are likely to be around searching for food. Thus you can imagine how mad I was when I arrived home from work on Friday, drove towards my gate and saw this half flat, spiky brown lump in the middle of the road.
'Arrrgggghhhh!' I shouted at it. 'You stupid, stupid hedgehog!' I parked my car in the drive and stomped back up the road. I was still shaking my head and ranting, 'How could you be so stupid? After my efforts to keep you safe all summer, and you go and run out in front of a car in broad daylight.'
I reached the little spiky brown lump and stared at it as if I was hoping for an answer to my questions about its stupidity. Then a big smile spread across my face, and I looked round sheepishly, hoping that no one had witnessed or heard my outburst. The little spiky brown lump had been left on the road by a horse.

    WONT STOP LAUGHING
If you own dogs you will love this book. It will make you feel better about your own dogs, your training trials - failures and successes, your frustrations, and the ultimate joy dogs bring.
This book will keep you smiling, laughing, and shaking your head all the way through. An easy simple read, a journal of dog ownership. But not just any dog, the king of terriers. The Airedale.
this book could have been an account of my household and the joy of having Airedales in it
Having had Airedales in my home for 21 years, this book could have been an account of my household and the joy of having Airedales in it. I laughed and cried my way through. I highly recommend this book for anyone that has, had, or is thinking of having an Airedale ( or more than one ) in their home.
A must read for dog lovers!
This book is pure delight. Jackie McGuinne has a gift for describing the reasons life with a terrier is merrier, well if you can handle living with a dog who is probably smarter then you. It's evident Jackie is wise enough to outsmart two Airedales and a Wild Welsh Terrier. I was crushed when the story ended, I sure hope another book is being crafted by now.
    Two Stars
Rather on the amateurish side of writing.
    I LOVED it!
Jackie has successfully captured the trials and triumphs of being owned by Terriers. Her book is a wonderful read and you will be sorry to reach the end! It's a geniune pleasure to read about the life experiences of a dedicated dog owner. I purchased copies for my friends!

    Length: 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-13-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Within the last several years, the animal-welfare movement has been divided between those who merely hope to protect animals and those who would like to extend to animals the same rights and recognition that have been gained by minorities, women, and homosexuals. For people who believe that animals have rights, or deserve to have them, an ordinance regulating the use of laboratory animals is only a small step toward the establishment of a society in which mankind lives in a different relation to the rest of the animal kingdom.
In The Rights of Mice, Lawrence Wright, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower and Going Clear, takes listeners inside the war between science and anti-vivisection raging across the city of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and its great educational institutions, Harvard and MIT. As animal rights activists attempt to push through city council an ordinance restricting the use of animals in laboratory testing, leaders in the science and medical communities brace for a fight. The Rights of Mice was originally published in New England Monthly, August 1987.
    Members Reviews:
    Good read, but short
This was a very interesting read. I liked the look into Cambridge as a community dealing with a devisive problem. I would have liked more background into the antivivisection movement, though. From the blurb, I was expecting more of a discussion of the "why's" behind giving animals equal rights and info on the debate on a grand scale, not just the passing of one ordinance.
    Brilliant
This is a stunning and moving work. What makes this particularly compelling is that it must be one of the earliest by an individual who developed into perhaps the greatest and most versatile journalist of our time!

Title: Evidence as to Man's Place in Nature

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 35 mins

    Release date: 09-13-16
    Publisher: AudioLearn
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Evidence as to Man's Place in Nature was written in 1863 by Thomas Henry Huxley. In this work, Huxley presents evidence for the evolution of man and ape from a common ancestor. Evidence as to Man's Place in Nature was the first book in history devoted to the topic of human evolution, and it discussed this theory in light of anatomical and other evidence. Backed by this evidence, the book popularized the theory of evolution amongst a wider readership than ever before, making it known to the layperson that evolution applied as fully to man as to all other life. Huxley was a prominent member of the scientific community and an early advocate of evolutionism. He was a well-respected man, highly visible to the public, and a key figure in the establishment of scientific professionalism. His work and public debates served to explore the idea of evolution and to usher in widespread acceptance, forming the foundation of our current understanding of biology and the place of man in the cosmos.
Evidence as to Man's Place in Nature addresses the implications of the theory of evolution for the origin of humanity, and the relation of humans to other animals. It brought Darwin's theory home, forcing the scientific community to face the subject of human evolution head-on.
The narration of the full text of Evidence as to Man's Place in Nature is preceded by a summary which includes a biography of the author, as well as an overview and synopsis of the work. Also included are an analysis and an investigation of the historical context, criticisms, and social impact evoked by the work.
Evidence as to Man's Place in Nature is a key piece of historical scientific literature, marking a turning point of the Western paradigm. It is a fascinating listen for students of history and science alike.
    Members Reviews:
The text I needed in an almost unusable format
I purchased this book as a duplicate, as I already have an earlier edition of this text. I chose this edition as a cheap substitute so that I could write in the margins, read it on the bus,, and generally treat it rougher than I would most books. I assumed that it wouldn't be the best quality, but many of the pages are poorly printed and entirely illegible. It only cost a few dollars, so I probably won't bother to return it, but do not purchase this edition if you are hoping to read the numerous footnotes and smaller text. I tried to make it work, but gave up and purchased a more mainstream (expensive) version that I could read.
    Incomplete book - Don't buy!
I bought this book thinking it was the complete "Evidence as to Man's Place in Nature." It's not. It only contains the first chapter "On the Natural History of the Man-like Apes." Of course, you can't tell this from the "Look inside!" preview, since it shows a different (complete!) book. What a rip off!
