    Brilliant.
Brilliant work from the always entertaining Robert Newman. Hope to see more audiobooks from him in the future
    Disappointing
Ideologically noble, but filled with misunderstandings and misrepresentations of evolutionary theory, unfortunately.
    +Tediously unfunny at times.
    Revelatory and Revolutionary
If you only read one book this year, make it this one.
Rob Newman smashes the myth of the dog-eat-dog world in which humans supposedly have selfishness coded in their genes.
He inspires wonder and awe at the natural world and its incredible creatures and provides hope for a better future...

    Publisher's Summary:
What is it like to try to heal the body when the mind is under attack? In this gripping and illuminating audiobook, Dr Allan Ropper reveals the extraordinary stories behind some of the life-altering afflictions that he and his staff are confronted with at the Neurology Unit of Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital.Neurologists diagnose and treat serious illnesses of the brain by combining the hard science of medical knowledge with the art of intuitive reasoning.
The unique challenge they face is that their primary sources of information - the patients' brains - are quite often altered, sometimes bizarrely, as a result of disease. Like Alice in Wonderland, Dr Ropper inhabits a place where absurdities abound: a sportsman who starts spouting gibberish; an undergraduate who suddenly becomes psychotic; a salesman who drives around and around a roundabout, unable to get off; a child molester who, after falling on the ice, is left with a brain that is very much dead inside a body that is very much alive; a figure skater whose body has become a ticking time-bomb; a mother who has to decide whether a life locked inside her own head is worth living.
How does one begin to treat such cases, to counsel people whose lives may be changed forever? How does one train the next generation of clinicians to deal with the moral and medical aspects of brain disease? Dr Ropper answers these questions by taking the listener into a world where lives and minds hang in the balance.

    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
One of the most significant discoveries of modern science is that the world we perceive around us is not as it appears. Rather, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and quantum physics have demonstrated that our day-to-day reality is a relative construct built upon a scaffolding of information bits that betray their real origins and causations. For instance, the other day I remarked to my oldest son, Shaun, that the ocean water around Catalina Island looked exceptionally blue. But, given his deep knowledge of science, my son responded that such "blueness" was actually not in the water at all but had to do with how different light waves get absorbed and refracted. The colors we see are due to the spectral properties of light. The longer wavelengths of light (such as red, orange, and yellow) are more readily captured by H20 whereas the shorter wavelengths of light (such as blue) get refracted, and thus we see the color blue, particularly if the water is clear.
But the scientific explanation for why an ocean is blue or a sunset is red is precisely not how we tend to experience such at first glance. In other words, the way we apprehend the world around us is not necessarily how we later comprehend it through scientific analysis. And herein lies the great divide, the great deception, or what early Indian rishis insightfully called "Maya". We live in a magic land, where all that manifests and appears real and certain is anything but.

    Great Book Highly Recommended.
Very informative. The writer did great research.
    Very informative and enlightning
The more I progressed through this book the more I understood the context and perspective of the author,
The information in the book is highly informative, the author clearly gave due diligence to the required research for his claims, and if you are on the authors side of the argument, then it feeds your knowledge bool . However if you are indifferent or biased in opposition to the authors opinion, then you feel strongly that the author may not be addressing an objective perspective.
Without question the author has researched his facts, this seams clear. However, these facts are without question, selective facts.
To be fair, I feel this book is a strongly biased and subjective of the authors opinion, and in some cases may come through as dictative (in a few instances the author dictates what you emotional state should be, thus strongly reflecting his own passionate feeling about the given scenarios)
The standoff here reminds me of something similar to the arguments between various religions and beliefs.
Each side arguing with selective facts and anti-facts. Each side has valid arguments, but yet none are fully comprehensive nor conclusive.
Thus if I were to give a general review it would be a 3 star at best, however from the perspective that I had approached this book, seeking critical arguments, I have given this book 4 stars as I feel the author makes a very good argument, and in-depth details.
I liked the sections on how exactly these organisms are manipulated
I liked the sections on how exactly these organisms are manipulated, because, armed with this information one is far better placed to deal with the rest of the information in the book. One is also better armed and informed about how and why these things are just so scary and unproven.
The support of so many scientific organisations for something based on unsound information and research (or indeed a complete absence of such) is also surprising and shocking, but the details are there. Therefore, I have no reason to believe that Mr Mark Plummer is not giving us the truth.
    The truth is out there
The type of book the gm industry doesn't want you to read...
    Thought provoking..and points well made...
I was on 2 minds before I read the book..but strongly opposed to gm now...let nature take its course..

    Title: Being a Beast
    Author: Charles Foster
    Narrator: Jot Davies
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-04-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Charles Foster wanted to know what it was like to be a beast: a badger, an otter, a deer, a fox, a swift. What it was really like. And through knowing what it was like, he wanted to get down and grapple with the beast in us all.
So he tried it out; he lived life as a badger for six weeks, sleeping in a dirt hole and eating earthworms. He came face to face with shrimps as he lived like an otter, and he spent hours curled up in a back garden in East London and rooting in bins like an urban fox.
A passionate naturalist, Foster realises that every creature creates a different world in its brain and lives in that world. As humans, we share sensory outputs, lights, smells and sound, but trying to explore what it is actually like to live in another of these worlds, belonging to another species, is a fascinating and unique neuroscientific challenge. For Foster it is also a literary challenge.
Looking at what science can tell us about what happens in a fox's or badger's brain when it picks up a scent, he then uses this to imagine their world for us, to write it through their eyes, or, rather, through the eyes of Charles the beast.
An intimate look at the life of animals, neuroscience, psychology, nature writing, memoir and more, it is a journey of extraordinary thrills and surprises, containing wonderful moments of humour and joy but also providing important lessons for all of us who share life on this precious planet.

    Thought provoking
excellent book, wasn't sure what to think when it started... but as it went on, I was fascinated by the journey taken.
Has made me reconsider an awful lot, and get into the world... the real world... a bit more
    A beast of a read.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I'm not sure. I had to listen to it twice and some parts more. found it wordy and difficult to really get my head around.
Would you recommend Being a Beast to your friends? Why or why not?
Don't think I would because I don't think my friends would either be interested or wouldn't be able to concentrate.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
    None in particular.
Do you think Being a Beast needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. This book was difficult enough to listen to.
    Any additional comments?
I really don't know what the point was in this book. I don't think it is possible for humans to really get inside the heads of animals and live like them and think like them and I just wasn't there with the author. I thought it was well read though.
    Great concept
Thought provoking and funny but could be more accessible and less opinionated. Definitely worth a read
    Excellent reading, brilliant writing
I loved this concept, the poetic yet science based writing and the humour. If you love the natural world then I reccommend this whole heartedly.

~~ Invisible dark matter! Does it exist? ~~
One reviewer of the original book by Lisa Randall (theoretical physicist) says, "Crazy or brilliant, you decide. Sort of a Cliff notes on dark matter, then takes off into whack-o land. They will either get a Nobel, or drift off into obscurity. I hope I live long enough to see." SO, with that said do you want to read the 437 page original first or this 30 page Instaread summary (think DETAILED review)?
According to the author of the original book, there have been five mass extinctions on Earth. There are 9 Key Takeways presented in this summary. Here are a couple to whet your appetite:
    >>>#5 - "Comets may have seeded the Earth with water and amino acids necessary to initiate life."
    >>>#6 - "Earth has experienced multiple extinctions with possible causes including climate change, ocean acidification, volcanic traps, and extraterrestrial collisions. Human and mammal evolution was possible as a result of the K-Pg extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs"
Is dark matter real? It's reportedly invisible so scientists cannot confirm that it exists.
Author's style in the original book described as combining a "highly scholarly style with personal anecdotes" admitting that her research is speculative.
Sound interesting to you? Then check this Instaread summary out first to see if what is written appeals to you. Maybe you've already read the original and need a quick reminder? This summary would be a great option for you too! Important to note that my review is based on the quality of this Instaread review and not the original book. Summary provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz
    Difficult Subject, but Well Written
My husband loves to read non-fiction Physics books. I thought by reading this Instaread, it might open up some potential conversations between us. I rarely read non-fiction and I don't think I've ever read any Physics material. To be honest, the content was a little difficult for me to understand. The Instaread seems to have simplified a lot of it, but it was still way over my head. With that being said, the Key Takeaway Chapters were broken done a bit and were a little easier to understand. I think this would be a great companion to read along with the full length book! As far as the Instaread goes, it is well written it presents the subject matter well. There were some interesting examples including a Star Trek reference. I don't think I will be reading the full book, but it is something I am going to suggest to my husband to read.

  • Breaking the Aging Code Audiobook by Vincent C. Giampapa MD FACS, Miryam Ehrlich Williamson

    Title: Breaking the Aging Code
Subtitle: Maximizing Your DNA Function for Optimal Health and Longevity
Author: Vincent C. Giampapa MD FACS, Miryam Ehrlich Williamson
    Narrator: Don Hagen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-11-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
DNA is "life's blueprint", encoding our genetic inheritance for health and life expectancy. Throughout life, DNA reproduces and replaces itself continually. In optimal conditions, DNA copies itself, making perfect reproductions. But as people age and their DNA is gradually damaged by the environment, diet, and physical and emotional stress, the DNA begins to reproduce poorly and ultimately stops reproducing completely. The result is disease and aging. In this groundbreaking book, Vincent Giampapa, MD, presents a radical new theory on how we age.
Contrary to current thinking, late-stage research suggests that the body is not irreversibly programmed by a finite number of cell divisions to age and die but rather is built for longevity and self-repair. Moreover, we can regulate which aging genes to "switch off" and which to "switch on", thereby altering how our genes are expressed and influencing how we age, the quality of our health, and how long we live.
In Breaking the Aging Code, you will learn not only about these amazing scientific breakthroughs but also about applying this information to your life. From the intimate level of the cell outward to environmental toxins, Dr. Giampapa describes the key components responsible for the breakdown of and damage to DNA. He also explains how you can use diet, nutraceuticals, exercise, and mind-body techniques to control these harmful processes and to optimize a healthy state of DNA.

    Five Stars
    Great Book!
    Nothing I didn't already know
I agree with the previous reviewer - while this book was an interesting read & confirmed good anti-aging information I already knew, it didn't really teach me anything different than what I'd already learned in the past 10+ years. Oh well.
I don't mean to knock down the information written, I just mean that it didn't add to my knowledge. It's good information for beginners in the search for anti-aging self-education.
    Accurate and concise
Well written information. Succinct news format, not accademic format. A must read for a health/fitness mind.

    Title: Infested
Subtitle: How the Bed Bug Infiltrated Our Bedrooms and Took Over the World
    Author: Brooke Borel
    Narrator: Lena Kaminsky
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-03-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 12 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Bedbugs. Few words strike such fear in the minds of travelers. In cities around the world, lurking beneath the plush blankets of otherwise pristine-looking hotel beds, are tiny, bloodthirsty beasts just waiting for weary wanderers to surrender to vulnerable slumber. Though bedbugs today have infested the globe, the common bedbug is not a new pest at all. Indeed, as Brooke Borel reveals in this unusual history, this most-reviled species may date back over 250,000 years, wreaking havoc on our collective psyche while even inspiring art, literature, and music - in addition to vexatious red welts.
In Infested, Borel introduces audiences to the biological and cultural histories of these amazingly adaptive insects and the myriad ways in which humans have responded to them. She travels to meet with scientists who are rearing bedbug colonies - even by feeding them with their own blood (ouch!) - and to the stages of musicals performed in honor of the pests. She explores the history of bedbugs and their apparent disappearance in the 1950s after the introduction of DDT, charting how current infestations have flourished in direct response to human chemical use as well as the ease of global travel. She also introduces us to the economics of bedbug infestations, from hotels to homes to office buildings, and the expansive industry that has arisen to combat them.
Hiding during the day in the nooks and seams of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, dresser tables, wallpaper, or any clutter around a bed, bed bugs are thriving and eager for their next victim. By providing fascinating details on bedbug science and behavior as well as a captivating look into the lives of those devoted to researching or eradicating them, Infested is sure to inspire at least a nibble of respect for these tenacious creatures - while also ensuring that you will peek beneath the sheets with prickly apprehension.
    Members Reviews:
What do we know about bed bugs so far?
History of bed bugs -- how humans discovered them, how bed bugs evolved to feed off humans, how humans attempted to treat them. Borel also describes her travels to meet scientists working in the field an gives the reader a sense of the current efforts to treat infestations. In order to do that, researchers need to unravel the many mysteries of these resilient bugs.
My main interest in bed bugs is their mating cycle. That was one mystery Borel didn't really address in detail. But there was a lot of interesting information provided.

    Language: English
    Release date: 11-12-15

    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Man Who Made Things out of Trees.
Robert Penn cut down an ash tree to see how many things could be made from it. After all, ash is the tree we have made the greatest and most varied use of over the course of human history. Journeying from Wales across Europe and Ireland to the USA, Robert finds that the ancient skills and knowledge of the properties of ash, developed over millennia making wheels and arrows, furniture and baseball bats, are far from dead.
The book chronicles how the urge to understand and appreciate trees still runs through us all like grain through wood.
    Members Reviews:
    Terribly innacurate title, but...
well worth the read. Great performance by the writer himself. I learned a lot and enjoyed the offshoots into esoteric topics.
worth listening to if you're into trees
A good listen for Woodworkers and tree people and a nice homage to ash trees.
    Engaging and intimate
Penn has important environmental things to say and does so engagingly and relevantly. He is deeply connected to trees and woodland on a very emotional level and his enthusiasm comes through in this telling of the post mortem uses of one particular tree. His tree now lives on in the artefacts and uses made of its flesh and we all learn to appreciate and value it, and by extension all timber, through this tale.
I listened to this book while engaged in my own amateur fiddling with my own woodland and if you can do so I heartily recommend you listen surrounded by trees.
    Outstanding !
Robert Penn has written an easily consumable and fascinating love letter to an ash tree he took from his local woods and the products that he produced from it.
The author's narration brings the book alive and adds to the listener's enjoyment and experience of what is an unusual and imaginative approach to the subject of the natural world .
He weaves aspects of history, biology of trees together with our human experience making the whole book calming and almost as meditative as sitting in a wood and experiencing nature first hand.
    I loved it!
    Thoroughly engaging
A great book, if you're interested in not only the process but historical narrative of woodland management and production. A lovely example of nature writing
