    Title: The 7 Sexes
    Subtitle: Biology of Sex Determination
    Author: Elof Axel Carlson
    Narrator: Adam B. Crafter
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-03-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
Few of us know much about the biology of sex determination, but what could be more interesting than to discover how we are shaped into males and females? In this book, Elof Carlson tells the incredible story of the difficult quest to understand how the body forms girls and boys. Carlson's history takes us from antiquity to the present day to detail how each component of human reproduction and sexuality was identified and studied, how this knowledge enlarged our understanding of sex determination, and how it was employed to interpret such little understood aspects of human biology as the origin of intersex births.
The book is published by Indiana University Press.
    Editorial Reviews:
"Carlson does an excellent job presenting the researchers who, over time, worked out the details of sex determination and differentiation. Highly informative and instructive." (Johan Verhulst, MD, Kinsey Institute)
    Critic Reviews:
"Carlson reveals the various scientific advances, in both methods and understanding, that allowed researchers to identify anatomical structures, gametes, sex hormones, sex chromosomes, and ultimately, a firm comprehension of the genetics of sex. This scientific story of discovery is quite fascinating." (Barbara Baumgartner, Washington University)

    A Science Marvel
What made the experience of listening to The 7 Sexes the most enjoyable?
This book answered questions I never knew to ask. It offered powerful and concise delivery of a complex topic. The narration was flawless and I will keep this on my reference bookshelf forever.
    Funny History and Real Science
What about Adam B. Crafters performance did you like?
He has a professorial voice that suits the topic.
    Any additional comments?
I found the combination of history and science to be most interesting. The book isn't intended to be funny, but the oh-so-ridiculous theories and beliefs that apparently-smart people came up with about sexes, before science, was laughable. These weren't just possibilities that Aristotle (yes, that Aristotle) and others hypothesized about while hanging out drinking wine on the isles of Greece, but actual beliefs (presumed to be absolutely true) of how the body, sex, and life worked.I got some good chuckles from hearing about the "wise" and their absurd conclusions. Makes you wonder what we today are being so "wise" about in our day, but is absolutely absurd.
Came for the reader, stayed for the story.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. It's an interesting subject, well performed.
Which character as performed by Adam B. Crafter was your favorite?
Mr. Crafter obviously knows his stuff.. his pleasant voice and calm cadence makes even the more obscure facts understandable - I found myself pausing the book several times to think about what he had just read. That doesn't happen often!
I will certainly continue following his readings.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Stuff you didn't know you wanted to know.
    Any additional comments?
I have to admit that I bought this book because I enjoyed Adam Crafters reading of William Banting's Letter on Corpulence, and wanted to see what else he had put out, but after the first chapter, I got totally involved in the story of how we are made.

  • The Shark and the Albatross Audiobook by John Aitchison

Title: The Shark and the Albatross
Subtitle: Travels with a Camera to the Ends of the Earth
    Author: John Aitchison
    Narrator: John Aitchison
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-01-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
For 20 years John Aitchison has been travelling the world to film wildlife for the BBC and other broadcasters, taking him to faraway places on every continent.
The Shark and the Albatross is the story of these journeys of discovery, of his encounters with animals and occasional enterprising individuals in remote and sometimes dangerous places.
His destinations include the far north and the far south, expeditions to film for Frozen Planet and other natural history series, in Svalbard, Alaska, the remote Atlantic island of South Georgia, and the Antarctic. They also encompass wild places in India, China and the United States.
In all he finds and describes key moments in the lives of animals, among them polar bears and penguins, seals and whales, sharks and birds, and wolves and lynxes. He reveals what happens behind the scenes and beyond the camera. He explains the practicalities and challenges of the filming process, and the problems of survival in perilous places. He records touching moments and dramatic incidents, some ending in success, others desperately sad.
There are times when a hunted animal triumphs against the odds and others when, in spite of preparation for every outcome, disaster strikes. And, as the author shows in several incidents that combine nail-biting tension with hair-raising hilarity, disaster can strike for filmmakers too.
This is natural history writing at its absolute best, evocative, informative and gripping from first to last.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is a lovely book, vividly written, giving us a fascinating insight into the world of wild life photography. It is a must for all those who enjoy insights into the natural world." (Alexander McCall Smith)
"In a word, beautiful. John shares the experience of patiently waiting, then the euphoria of capturing the action; capturing the art in nature." (Bill Oddie)
"Here you'll find a version of the world which is more real, more intense and, sadly, more beautiful than the one most of us are forced to occupy." (Adam Nicolson)

Very well written and read. I really enjoyed this book, it has a lot of emotion, humour, and shows how passionate he is about the amazing animals he films. It provides an incredible perspective, hearing the stories behind the scenes of the shots I remember most from the BBC series. Truly an inspiring read.

    Missing history of CES
Thank you for offering the book CES it filled in the missing history about the investigations of what thenwas a completely new approach to anxiety, depression & poor sleep..
    Five Stars
    Good material well organized.
    Five Stars
    very informative
CES works by Electrically Disrupting Programs in the Reptilian Brain which cause Psychological and Emotional Distress
The hyper-critical "reviews" (they're not really "reviews," but agenda-driven screeds) are quite obviously uninformed and presented by people who have no valid criticism of CES itself. "Waste of time" is not a valid or supported critique.
One of the things that is only now appearing in medical literature is notice of the role of variability in physical and mental health and fitness.
The heart, for example, can be damaged without heart rate variability. In fact. HR variability is one of the fastest, easiest and most reliable ways to induce relaxation.
One of the factors overlooked in the genesis and maintenance of so-called "Mental Illness" is the role of rigidity, invariability or variability loss.
For example, many mental disorders from anxiety and depression are marked by a lack of variability (i.e, non-adaptive rigidity) in patterns of thinking (cognitive invariability), feeling (emotional rigidity) and the many component activities of living such as relating to others.
Many rigid-minded people advocate solutions to psychological, emotional and relational distress paradigmatically, i.e., as a holy grail standard of thinking, feeling, coping, etc. They believe there is a top-dead-center position by which they can calibrate and fine-tune human consciousness, emotion, coping, and relating like an automobile tune-up. But human beings are not machines.
We are not only designed to accept multiple inputs and many forms of "calibration" and tuning from the world and others around us. We actually REQUIRE multiple forms of inputs. Human being are Flex-Fuel devices. --- This is one of the reasons that inputs like CES can work with multiple parameters, frequencies, amplitudes, etc..
When it comes to healing mental and emotional distress, disruption is likely the key to unlocking the lower, reptile brain that roots and embeds dysfunction into and sometimes throughout the human nervous system. The reptilian lower brain can become mired in closed feedback loops.--- Rigidly locked in, making other therapies (e.g., talk therapy) superfluous and ineffective. The reptilian brain controls the nervous system electrically, hormonally and electrochemically. Maladaptive programming can become reflexive, like the "triggering" we see in many stress disorders including PTSD. Ordinary therapies does not affect these neuroelectric networks. Disrupting maladaptive symptom producing neuroelectric programs requires a neuroelectric disruptor. This is where CES comes in.
CES works by electrically disrupting of Psychological and Emotional Distress Programs in the Reptilian Brain.
All in all a total waste of money
Almost no real information and what there is is repeated over and over again for each new malady this therapy allegedly helps. All in all a total waste of money.

But this seemingly ordinary vegetable has many secrets that will delight you. Did you know that carrots come in every color of the rainbow?
Did you know that carrots, were once upon a time, used exclusively as medicine? Did you know that carrots are one of the most effective natural insecticides?
Did you know that carrots can be as addictive as coffee and even give you withdrawal symptoms?

I would let Angel explain this to me again
The content was not nearly as hilarious as Kevin Hart's "Let Me Explain," but boy was it an exciting book. I had no idea that something I eat so often could be significant in so many ways. The wonders of the carrot used to elude me, but I am forever grateful that I have been enlightened by this treasure of a book. If only I could convince my book club that this is worth the listen, I would make them my favorite carrot dish for us to eat as we talked it over.

    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
How is it that we came to be here? The search for answers to that question has preoccupied humans for millennia. Scientists have sought clues in the genes of living things; in the physical environments of Earth, from mountaintops to the depths of the ocean; in the chemistry of this world and those nearby; in the tiniest particles of matter; and in the deepest reaches of space. In Islands of the Cosmos, Dale A. Russell traces a path from the dawn of the universe to speculation about our future on this planet. He centers his story on the physical and biological processes in evolution, which interact to favor more successful and eliminate less successful forms of life. Marvelously, these processes reveal latent possibilities in life's basic structure and propel a major evolutionary theme: the increasing proficiency of biological function. It remains to be seen whether the human form can survive the dynamic processes that brought it into existence. Yet the emergence of the ability to acquire knowledge from experience, to optimize behavior, to conceptualize, to distinguish "good" from "bad" behavior all hint at an evolutionary outcome that science is only beginning to understand.
The book is published by Indiana University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"Dale Russell is one of the great creative thinkers of all time in paleontology. This book - clearly the product of a full life considering these questions - does not disappoint." (David E. Fastovsky, author of Evolution and Extinction of the Dinosaurs)
    Members Reviews:
Concise & detailed overview of vanished life & its planetary environment
This book is a very broad and detailed overview of the entire Deep History of life on Earth. It is a decided plus that this 450 page book so tersely and compactly describes the vanished ecosystems and their living things, and the oceans & atmosphere & continents inhabited by these 'extinct critters'. Alternatively, one could tediously wade through a hefty Paleontology Text or endure the waffle & over-simplification of a popular-level science book.
This book describes how life and its planetary environment has changed with time, based only on tangible evidence given in the book: fossil finds, and geological evidence of past climates, continents & environments.
Readers looking for a "storybook" style, personal asides, and flowery descriptions, should look elsewhere! Each vast geological time period is compressed into a short chapter, and each dense and fact-filled sentence functions only to impart information and insight. This is not a novel, after all! Yes, the prose is a little terse and dry, but it is the numerous bizarre facts and insights about vanished worlds that entertain the reader, and the grand narrative of life's history; a narrative that no novelist could have made up.
Russell writes in the unemotional manner of the scientist, as he calmly describes volcanic catastrophes, ice ages, asteroid impacts, and the early struggle of life to come into being. It's all about insight, ideas, knowledge.

    Publisher: Audible Studios

    Genres: Science & Technology, Biology
    Publisher's Summary:
We inherit mechanisms for survival from our primeval past - none so obviously as those involved in reproduction. The hormone testosterone underlies the organization of activation of masculinity: It changes the body and brain to make a male. It is involved not only in sexuality but in driving aggression, competitiveness, risk taking - all elements that were needed for successful survival and reproduction in the past. But these ancient systems are carried forward into a modern world. The ancient world shaped the human brain, but the modern world is shaped by that brain. How does this world, with all its cultural, political, and social variations, deal with and control the primeval role of testosterone, which continues to be essential for the survival of the species?
Sex, aggression, winning, losing, gangs, war: The powerful effects of testosterone are entwined with them all. These are the ingredients of human history, so testosterone has played a central role in our story. In Testosterone Joe Herbert explains the nature of this potent hormone, how it operates in mammals in general and in humans in particular, what we know about its role in influencing various aspects of behavior in men, and what we are beginning to understand of its role in women. From rape to gang warfare among youths, understanding the workings of testosterone is critical to enable us to manage its continuing powerful effects in modern society.

    Boring ..
This book was VERY dry which I sort of expected since it was more of a scientific book however the sad part of it was that the author probably spent 20 minutes talking about what testosterone ACTUALLY DOES and the rest of the 8 hours on fluff and things that had nothing to do with the subject .

"Coral is a very beautiful and unusual animal. Each coral head consists of thousand[s] of individual polyps. These polyps are continually budding and branching into genetically identical neighbors." (Antony Garrett List)
People have always loved to build things, whether it's a feat of engineering in an underground subway or the construction of the world's tallest skyscraper. Thus, it's somewhat ironic that the largest structure ever built was not made by humans, but by incredibly tiny organisms known as coral polyps. Over the course of tens of thousands of years, these small organisms have put together a collection of nearly 3,000 reefs that form a collective stretching across 130,000 square miles. It is often mistakenly claimed that the Great Wall of China can be seen in space, but it's absolutely true that the enormous Great Barrier Reef is visible.
The sheer size of the Great Barrier Reef is mind boggling, but its importance extends far past its physical extent. Put simply, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most beautiful spots on the planet, offering kaleidoscopic colors thanks to the coral and the species that call it home. This is understandable because a staggering number of species inhabit the Great Barrier Reef, ranging from starfish and turtles, to alligators and birds. Scientists have counted about 1,500 different fish species that use the reef, and it's estimated that 1.5 million birds use the site. In designating it a World Heritage Site, UNESCO wrote of the Great Barrier Reef, "The Great Barrier Reef is a site of remarkable variety and beauty on the north-east coast of Australia. It contains the world's largest collection of coral reefs...."

A Butterfly's Migration from Mexico to Canada
I have now read all thirteen of Jean Craighead George's Thirteen Moons books for children in the middle grades, and it's a wonderful series. All children should be introduced to these books, which feature a particular animal, bird, or insect during a given month of the year. The Moon of the Monarch Butterflies is the moon of my favorite month, May. In this book we see a female monarch butterfly on her spring migration from Mexico to southern Ontario. She travels up the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys and deposits eggs on milkweed leaves in various locations along the way. The reader learns about the life cycle of the butterfly and the different birds, animals, and plants that she encounters on her journey. Like all the books in this series, this one is illustrated with lavish full-page paintings which always add to the story. However, I found the pictures in this book a bit disappointing because I thought they failed to take full advantage of the splendor of the month of May. But I would still recommend The Moon of the Monarch Butterflies, along with all the other Thirteen Moons. People of all ages can enjoy them.
