Historys great leaders have much to teach us, and no one outshines Alan Axelrod in extracting those lessons and applying them to todays business world. His Elizabeth I, CEO and Patton on Leadership both became BusinessWeek best sellersand now, to follow his recent Winston Churchill, CEO, Axelrod has found a new and perhaps surprising subject for his popular format: Gandhi.
Gandhi, a CEO? Absolutelyand an incomparable example for our uncertain times, when we need leaders we can trust and admire. Not only was he a moral and intensely spiritual man, but also a supremely practical manager and a powerful agent for change, able to nurture the rebirth of an entire nation. To achieve this goal, he mastered the elements of personal leadership and institutional management. Axelrod looks at this much-studied figure in a way nobody has before, employing his fluid, engaging, and conversational style to bring each lesson to life through quotes and vivid examples from Gandhis life.

Don't just change the present, create the future
More often not, companies launch series after series of change initiatives which result in greater and greater failures. Why do these change initiatives fail? The authors of this book argue that it is because companies attempt to make a series of small changes. They see these series of small changes as simply tweaking hey present and therefore doomed.
The authors argue that in the new economy, companies are faced with radical and constant global, technical, social, and for many, personal change. With these sweeping changes, the authors argue that a company must also make drastic changes or encounter the failures of those that have opted for small incremental changes. How does a company make these sweeping changes? Can it be done?
The authors are consultants that had great success reviving the NCR division of AT&T. They draw on the knowledge gained from their success to deliver a step-by-step guide to what they call "revivolution," the process to renew in a revolutionary way the management, team, or organization.
The steps are grounded in the following principles for the "revivolution:"
    Â Self-renew is Job 1.
Â We are all part of interconnected, interdependent networks
Â Create successes for all of your connections
Â Learn more in order to contribute more to others' success.
Â Take ownership of your company and your life.
    Two great collaborators
I had the opportunity early in my career to have Jim Belasco consult with the division I worked for in San Diego in San Diego. Jerre Stead was the CEO of the company at the time. This is another of Jim's thought provoking lessons on how to be an effective leader. I have learned much from him over the years in my growth from stock clerk to public company president.
One of the best executive roadmaps for a business turnaround
This book represents a solid and actionable roadmap for building and rebuilding a successful business of any size -- whatever the situation or current performance of the business. You can expect to receive important insights that you as an executive can apply toward creating a business that sets clear goals and meets them -- building the right relaitonships with your team, establishing a vision, mission and objectives while executing with leadership and a pragmatic focus on detail. You should also take a look at the companion book - a later re-issue of this edition, re-titled Seize Tomorrow - Start Today ... which is a handy paperback version. Again, this is an executive-level book which many business leaders actually HAVE used to turn businesses around. No other business book offers as much insight, so intelligently packaged and articulated. THis is the essential executive handbook for business and individual renewal.
    A Solid Effort!
James A. Belasco and Jerre Stead use the metaphor of the mythological phoenix to underline the need for a leader to embrace change. They suggest using the phoenix to create a new vision for yourself and your company.

    Title: Primal Management
Subtitle: Unraveling Secrets of Human Nature
    Author: Paul Herr
    Narrator: Jim Herrin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-30-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Business, Management
    Publisher's Summary:
As human beings, we are fascinated by what makes us tick. We know that nature gave us certain biological appetites to ensure our survival, among those the need for water, food, sex, and love, but meeting these alone is not enough to ensure happiness. Scientists, and now managers, are realizing that people have a biological need to experience social rewards like praise, the thrill of innovation, and the satisfaction of acquiring new skills.
To succeed, every manager needs to realize that work must provide more than just a paycheck and that quenching these social appetites is the key to creating passionate employees whose productivity blows away the bottom line.
Primal Management is the first book to bring together the five impulses at the core of human motivation (innovation, competency, attaining goals, cooperation, and self-protection). It reveals that to drive employees, the workplace has to satisfy these appetites, and offers practical tips on how to do it and metrics for measuring success. Respected consultant Paul Herr explodes the myth that emotions have no place on the job and explores how this belief actually harms employee performance. Using examples of companies that have benefited from the principles of primal management, he shows how businesses can measure their emotional health, address areas where they don't engage employees, and increase productivity by boosting the emotional paycheck.
Based on groundbreaking scientific research, this book will change the way we inspire our people and show how fulfilled employees lead to incredibly profitable businesses.

    difficult listen
I really wanted to like this book. On multiple attempts, I found I simply couldn't continue listening due to its fatal combination of dry material and dry narration. I'm sure the book has good information to share, but I have to admit I'm sorry I bought this one.

Very pleased to listen to this book from Paul Herr. Even if you are not in management for any corporation. This audio book clearly reads / listens as it is very-valuable to know what pleases people!! Paul includes his personal life experiences in this book which is a huge plus (for any author); in-order to assist in imparting useful information to us the reader; (as it is written from a "hands-on" type of working perspective). Thanks Paul for writing this book! Thank you everybody for reading my review! Hope this review helps in your decision to have a listen of this book.
    compelling and thought provoking
I have encountered a number of books on management psychology and how to do things better. Most have similar themes written in different ways. Paul Herr's book on Primal Management attempts to explain why we tick the way we do and backs this up with biological and scientific research. I found this book fascinating and compelling and came out of the other end a believer - although to be fair, this is synergistic with my preferred management style. Some will not find this transition so easy. My only reason for not scoring this a 5 is the narrators slightly monotone style which grates a little after a while.

Fascinating & Boring at the same time
I will probably not download anymore books with this narrator because his reading style drove me nuts. He had very little inflection in his voice & often times sounded robotic.
The history of the Civil War was fascinating to me because it had been so long since I studied anything from that time period. I learned a lot about the war and these two, very different Generals.
However, the battles did get a little old after awhile & my fascination started to wane at some point. This could also be because of the narrator's delivery. I mostly enjoyed the opening introductions of these 2 men & the stories about the end of the war. I also appreciated the tie-ins with modern day leadership at the end of each chapter.

    Repetitive
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If the author hadn't repeated himself for half of the book, espousing how great his company was. If he'd have bothered to explain how, rather than boasting about what he did, it would have been better and more helpful.
Great book if you haven't found your passion yet
Where does Young Guns rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I would rank this toward the top but I've definitely heard better books than this.
Who was your favorite character and why?
There was only 1 character I believe.
Which character as performed by Jeffrey Preston was your favorite?
There was only 1 character I believe.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reactions. Good book altogether, but not great IMO.
    Any additional comments?
Great real-life story. I've already found my passion in life so this book could only do so much for me. However, it was great to listen to since it reminded me to follow my passion. I try to remind myself of that everyday and this definitely helped.
For anyone that hasn't found their passion in life yet, this book should be in your pipeline!
    motivating
most of this is common sense but the reminder doesn't hurt.

Ok but not the best book.
This book was ok, there were lots of good examples of people were successful using social networks but no real tool on how you can apply it to your business. The book is very basic and for people that dont already know what a social network is or how it works.
I read Ground Swell first and found it much more informative.

Much of the same Material from Other Books
This text is a bit preachy and I don't care for the style. It retells the Dell Hell story and another about Sony's bad boy attempt to use social media undercover to drive up PSP Christmas sales, but generally doesn't say anything that hasn't already been covered in this genre -- What Would Google Do, Here Comes Everybody, etc. Yes, we know the dialectic Internet is changing business, but there's nothing particularly insightful about this text. Be Honest, it says. So did Beware the Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt and How to Swim with the Sharks without Being Eaten Alive -- were those two decades ago?
But this is different -- be honest, or else, it will bite you. The Internet is forever and anything on a website at anytime can be rediscovered via a simple Google search.
Is there really anyone reading this who doesn't already know this?
This book is more an issue of wishful thinking. The authors HOPE businesses will be more honest in the future, but ... I found all evidence to the contrary.
This book is well read, the production is clean and the ideas flowed smoothly into my mind.

    what's the point?
A bunch of case studies on how some American companies did something and then did something different. Woop-de-doo. What an absurd book. Their little buzz words 'The How' and 'The What' that they liberally lather onto any overused case-study, in an attempt to take ownership of the idea, are infuriating. so pointless and annoying. If anyone makes it through this and learns anything applicable to their business I'll give you a tenner. Do yourself a favour and get 'Rework' or 'Crush It' if you are really keen on modern thought and change.
