Named to the American Library Associations Reference & User Services (RUSA) Listen List!
Combining the emotional depth of The Art of Racing in the Rain with the magical spirit of The Life of Pi, Lily and the Octopus is an epic adventure of the heart.
When you listen to Lily and the Octopus, you will be taken on an unforgettable ride. The magic of this novel is in the listening, and we don't want to spoil it by giving away too many details. We can tell you that this is a story about that special someone: the one you trust, the one you can't live without. For Ted Flask, that someone special is his aging companion, Lily, who happens to be a dog.
Lily and the Octopus reminds us how it feels to love fiercely, how difficult it can be to let go, and how the fight for those we love is the greatest fight of all.
Remember the last book you told someone they had to listen to? Lily and the Octopus is the next one.
    Critic Reviews:
"Michael Urie narrates with a heartfelt passion that makes one giggle and laugh, nod in understanding and sob with sorrow. Urie's authentic emotion comes out in every character, whether it's Lily the dog's excitement, Ted the human's frustration, or the nameless octopus's apathy." (

    Dog sighs....
This book is amazing. Maybe because I am a singleton and doggy parent - but this book made me FEEL. I had some laugh out loud moments and some sobbing - but I will definitely be putting this in my top 10 Audible books!
    Be prepared for tears
    Any additional comments?
As a person with an eleven year old dachshund I found this store extremely difficult to listen to, yet I could not stop. I totally understand the love and devotion Ted had for his dear Lily. Letting go is so painful. One of at the cruelest things is in life is the fact that a dogs life is just way to short.
My heart ached... filled to overflow with love
What did you love best about Lily and the Octopus?
I loved Ted's metaphoric journey through Lilly's last days. I just lost my own loving pet a few months ago {when Lilly told Ted '30 days is enough' I had to sob aloud because I'm still grieving months beyond that}. I can commiserate with his battle to save her, and loved that he had a protagonist in the octopus to fight against... I had no such villian in my own story. But I had no less heartache even when my girl left on her own before I was forced to 'help' her on to a better path than the one she was struggling upon
What other book might you compare Lily and the Octopus to and why?
I think this one stands alone; I really had no idea what I was getting into when I started listening to the story & as it was developing, I think I really BELIEVED that Ted's battle was real
What about Michael Uries performance did you like?
I believed he was Ted... and Lily. And feeling the love and the ache from both sides of the story. He was beautiful.
Who was the most memorable character of Lily and the Octopus and why?
The cantankerous octopus & his non-nonchalance attitude while taking Lily's live away in thin slices. I think it gave Ted hope to personify death in an effort to save Lily. It gave him something to attempt to fend off, something to direct his fear towards.

    Enjoyable Read
I enjoyed this book. it was filled with Mystery, moments of real concern for the characters, bad guys, good guys, heartbreak and love. The Narrator was good at differentiating her voice for each character and giving each scenario it's correct voice. Overall a good read.
    Heartwarming family issues.
First fiction I listened to after a non-fiction medical book. It was heartwarming, full of action and family issues that occur In real life. Well written and I loved the narrator's voice and presentation. I would like to read more from this author and listen to more books by the narrator.
    pathetically predictable
narration was OK... story was exceptionally predictable, with simple characters and too many coincidences. the good guys are all good, the answers always around the bend, the bad guy... well, let's just say it's kind of silly. entertaining, but that's about all the story has to offer.
Don't judge. Instead walk a mile in my shoes.
Her Sister's Shoes by Ashley Farley is a great beginning to The Sweeney Sisters series. We meet three very different sisters, who each have their own set of challenges to deal with. Not only are they different, they have their differences that pull them apart and yet, in the end, the family bond is the strongest pull of all. The story is fast paced with real-life situations that Farley infuses with drama and emotional tension. The characters are true-to-life and evocative--readers will get caught up in their lives. Family dilemmas covered by a whole lot of love and loyalty. I listened to the audiobook edition that is narrated by Tanya Eby. She does a great job of narration, making for an enjoyable listening experience.
    nice story
I liked this story. I will probably read the next book so I can see what happens to the characters

    Title: The Children
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Ann Leary
    Narrator: Gretchen Mol
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-24-16
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 298 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
From New York Times best-selling author Ann Leary comes the captivating story of a wealthy but unconventional New England family, told from the perspective of a reclusive 29-year-old who has a secret (and famous) life on the Internet.
Charlotte Maynard rarely leaves her mother's home, the sprawling Connecticut lake house that belonged to her late stepfather, Whit Whitman, and the generations of Whitmans before him. While Charlotte and her sister, Sally, grew up at Lakeside, their stepbrothers, Spin and Perry, were welcomed as weekend guests. Now the grown boys own the estate, which Joan occupies by their grace - and a provision in the family trust.
When Spin, the youngest and favorite of all the children, brings his fiancée home for the summer, the entire family is intrigued. The beautiful and accomplished Laurel Atwood breathes new life into this often comically rarefied world. But as the wedding draws near and flaws surface in the family's polite veneer, an array of simmering resentments and unfortunate truths is exposed.
With remarkable wit and insight, Ann Leary pulls back the curtain on one blended family as they are forced to grapple with the assets and liabilities - both material and psychological - left behind by their wonderfully flawed patriarch.

Even better than The Good House!
Interesting plot--even a little mystery--interesting characters, location...interesting everything! Great voice performance too.
I was a little worried reading some of the reviews on Amazon but I liked Leary's The Good House so much, I decided to risk it. And I'm glad I did. This one was even better. I'm not sure what the other reviewers are talking about when they say "unlikeable characters." You like who you're supposed to like, dislike who you're supposed to dislike, and feel ambivalent about other characters--like you're supposed to. In other words, Leary did her job without banging you over the head.
All the main characters were complex and fully realized, as was the plot, the sense of place, the relationships between characters, etc.
    Brilliant family comedy/drama
Ann Leary knows what she's doing. Take a few interesting characters with amusing flaws/quirks, put them in a challenging situation, add an interloper, money, unanswered questions, resentment and humor, and then turn the whole thing upside-down. Witty at times, dark at others. Not only is this a great character study, it's got a riveting plot too.
The level of depth takes this book from good to great. A lively story that kept me engaged, entertained and which moved me deeply.
Thank you Gretchen Mol for your superb narration. Many audiobooks suffer from narration that does not serve the book as much as the performer's ego. Overacting is such a turnoff. Finally, a narrator who gives us a book rather than a self-indulgent performance. Five stars.
Leary is developing into a formidable writer
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed Ann Leary's first novel but I think this new one is even better. The protagonist presents many of the other characters as virtuous and lovable but the reader slowly begins to detect the unreliability of these views. The writing is subtle, the insights into human frailty are forgiving and the narrative is compelling.

    Wonderful western flavor.
This is the first apocalyptic-style book from Russell Blake I have come across. Halfway through this first book of the series I have decided it is an excellent book. The flavor is more western than anything else. Though strange sounding, how much different would it be should a grid-down apocalypse take us back to the 1800's. This also makes more sense since our main character Lucas is a former Texas Ranger. The things that bring me back to current day are the weapons being used. Excellent writing, good characters, with this wonderful western flavor to the story. One of the better stories I have come across in recent weeks. I'm liking this so far. I wish Audible had the next two books.
    Entertaining Read
I have listened to both books in this series and I must say they are probably my favorite of all post apocalyptic novels I've read. It's almost like Clint Eastwood meets mad max. What's different about these stories is the fact that they are not heavy in the bible banging or the preaching to buy silver and gold. But they are heavy on action and story line. I loved that, as I have grown weary of the former. They read like a western but better. I love Lamore, so this was right up my alley. I would strongly urge those of you who love post A novels but are sick of the religious overtones to read it. Patterson bores me half to death. But I suffered through them because I never give up. Now, don't get me wrong, I am religious. I just don't need the nonstop chatter about JC. I crave action and man this is packed with it. The narrator is excellent and brings the story to life. Far far better than some others who have strange intonation and speaking habits. Great range of voices. Just excellent. I am disappointed that I have to wait for book three. But hopefully I will get to hear it soon. Great book to sit out side in a hammock witch a beer, chill, close your eyes and let the story unfold.
Good survival story leaving you wanting more
I have listened to over 500+ audio books and I will say this story is in my top favorites. The only grip I have is that it's only 7 and half hours long, it leaves you wanting allot more. Is it worth the 7 hours? He'll yes it is. The stories protagonist isn't only surviving but helping a little girl and an apparent hotty which in my book is as good as any reason, he has a good backdrop story and really doesn't want to do it, but because he's a good guy does. It seems simple but it works. I don't give books under 10 to15 hrs a 5 star rating and I know allot of audio book lovers love longer stories like me, however like I said before it's worth it.
    Gritty with a good storyline
This was a good addition to the series.

    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 187 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Little Bee, the young female refugee from the Nigerian delta, must master the Queen's English and the Queen's England if she is to escape her past and make a life in the UK after two years in a refugee detention center. The novel opens on the day Little Bee is released from the center with no identification papers and only the address of an English couple, Andrew and Sarah, whom she once met on a Nigerian beach. All three of their lives were horribly changed by that meeting on the beach. When Little Bee unexpectedly appears at Sarah's doorstep, it is the day of Andrew's funeral.
Told in turns in the first person by Little Bee and Sarah, the novel follows these two women as they struggle to save each other and themselves. Little Bee tries to make a life for herself in a totally alien land while Sarah must come to terms with her choices in London, including an extramarital affair and her seemingly frivolous career path. United by their past and by love for Sarah's young son, Charlie, Little Bee and Sarah become indispensable to each other. But their bond will face the ultimate test when the system catches up with Little Bee, and each woman must make a devastating decision.

    Little Bee
Another favorite. I've listened to it 4 times. Anne Flosnick is one of my favorite narrators. She made this character come to life. It was easy to lover Little Bee.
    What a disappointment
    Great idea, poor execution.
I thought a story about the connection between a young Nigerian refugee and grieving British woman would be powerful and moving. But I found the story far-fetched and the characters annoying. I often didn't believe the dialogue or the character's choices, which meant that I stopped caring what would happen.
The narration was fine, but in this instance it would have made sense to have two narrators, since there are two clear voices in the book telling the story. I am often a fan of one narrator books, but in this case it would have been better with two. Not that that would have made me enjoy the story... but, still.
    Hard to press stop
The book was great, easy listen. After I pause, I was always looking for the next opportunity to listen again,.
    Character and plot annoyingly implausible
Although it is well narrated, this book irritated me for 3 reasons. 1. In several places the plot is moved along through implausible devices. E.g. When Little Bee is selected to phone the police, even though she barely knows how to use a phone. 2. The thought and speech of characters is often implausible. E.g. The tiresome way Charlie the little boy makes a grammatical mistake in every utterance. 3. It employs predictable, well-worn stereotypes: e.g. the white working class racists that Bee encounters everywhere telling her to get back to Umbongo land. There are some clever and sometime witty conceits (e.g. Bee's thoughts about the queen). And I wouldn't say it was a bad book--just an annoying one.
    great book!
This book definitely opens your eyes to issues in other countries. It's definitely a cliff hanger though.

    Publisher's Summary:
A novel about family and the secrets that we keep - a young woman learning to love and leave home and realizing that, maybe, she never quite left. From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Still Life with Bread Crumbs and Rise and Shine.
This story begins in the 1960s, and explores how Mimi Miller comes of age, over and over again.
As a young girl in Miller's Valley, an ordinary farming town that may be facing its final days, Mimi is observing adults, selling corn, growing up and changing, and watching the world around her change, too.
As the years go by, the unthinkable starts to seem inevitable. Anna Quindlen's novel takes us through the changing eras of Mimi and her family, as secrets are revealed, and the heartbreaks of growing up and falling in love with the wrong man are overcome.
A deeply moving, inspiring story of a young woman learning to love and leave, the place and family from which she comes.
    Critic Reviews:
"In a quiet, unaffected performance, narrator Brittany Pressley makes 1960s Miller's Valley, Pennsylvania, incredibly real.... Quindlen's spot-on insights allow Pressley to give each family member a convincing personality--from Mimi's no-nonsense mother to her gentle father, from her two older brothers to her agoraphobic aunt. Engrossing listening." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
    Quietly engaging
Anna Quindlen has written a few good books and a few mediocre ones. Whatever you think of each book what comes through in all is her skill at writing and her own experiences in life. This book is about a woman reflecting on her youth in a small town and how events played out with her family, her friends, her loves. Its about the choices she made and the opportunities that presented themselves. It describes the complicated relationships we have in our lives. There is nothing earth shattering in this book, so if you are looking for that don't bother. What this book delivers is excellent character development, excellent writing and a story that keeps you listening because you develop a "relationship" with the characters and an interest in how it all turns out. Our book club read it and we generally disagree on most books, however, 90% gave it a thumbs up and we had a great discussion. The narration was excellent. I am glad I listened and would recommend it.
    Disappointing Story
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Characters are single dimensional and predictable
What was most disappointing about Anna Quindlens story?
The depressing tone of the story.
What about Brittany Pressleys performance did you like?
    Good
Did Miller's Valley inspire you to do anything?
Move on to a new book.
    Any additional comments?
    Not typical of this author.
Not Typical Quindlen- I was disappointed
Normally Anna Quindlen wows me. She normally starts off her impeccable novels with normal families who do normal every day things. Her formula seems to be having a very shocking thing happen to a seemingly normal family half way through the book.
Miller's Valley is the story of a family over decades. The family is normal, has normal issues (pre marital sex, pregnancy, PTSD from Vietnam War, Dad has stroke, etc). The problem is- the story doesn't seem to have a point. It rambles on and on and it's hard to care about the characters.

New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult shares a powerful novel about the unbreakable bond between parent and child, the temptation to play God, and the dangerous repercussions.
Fourteen-year-old Trixie Stone is in love for the first time. Worth the read!
I Love Jodi Picoult the most because of her unpredictability! This story was not one of my favorites, but did not disappoint in the predictability area! The narrator was annoying to listen to, especially when she changed her voice to the men in the story. Overall, worth reading or listening to!
People are never who you think.
Trixie was an egocentric brat with parents who adored her. It was weird that Trixie's mother took the blame for everything, whether true or not leaves the reader wondering...but I did not like that ending. This was not one of the best Jodi Picoult books I have listened to; but I did like all the Eskimo folklore culture that was shared. She made it sound so believable.
    Her worst book
Well that was hours of wasted time. I used to love her novels, but this one really was not good. The ending was so predictable. And all it left me was hoping I never have to go to Alaska
    disappointed
I have read many of this authors books but I really didn't enjoy this one, I felt like the ending was left in mid air and tge characters never really developed.
I found this a little monotonous towards the end
I got really bored towards the end, and the ending came out of nowhere which wasn't teally an ending at all after listening for all those hours. I was disappointed. The narrator is excellent.

    Must listen!
I hardly find any audio books that keep me listening till the end. This book did just that! From the soothing narrator voice throughout to the likeable characters. Very easy to follow and simply entertaining. Would definitely recommend!
    Wow!
I very rarely find a Chamberlain book that I do not enjoy however, the word of enjoy is a vast understatement for this selection. This book takes you through modern day with reflections of the past by intertwining two very compelling stories. The last few chapters is sure to raise your eyebrows then reach for tissues. Loved!!!
    WONDERFUL BOOK!!
Another great book and story by Diane Chamberlain. Enjoyed from beginning to end. Lots of twists and turns that keeps you drawn in which is always typical of her work. I would recommend for sure. Enjoy!
    not crazy about the narrator
I actually stopped listening to this one after about 5 minutes bc of the narrator s voice and manner of speaking. listened to a different book, came back to this and managed to get past the annoying voice. Very good story, well written and intriguing, not predictable. Good overall.
    Story interesting, Narrator was terrible.
Narrator ruined the book for me! Good story but the voices were irritating. Would not buy another book with this narrator

    Publisher's Summary:
A whip-smart and funny novel told by a former Wall Street insider who reveals what it's like for a working woman to balance love, ambition, and family in a world of glamorous excess, outrageous risk taking, and jaw-dropping sexism.
In 2008, Isabelle - a self-made 30-something Wall Street star - appears to have it all: an Upper West Side apartment, three healthy children, a handsome husband, and a high-powered job. But her reality is something else. Her trading-desk work environment resembles a 1980s frat party, her husband feels employment is beneath him, and the bulk of childcare and homecare still falls in Belle's already full lap.
Enter Henry, the former college fiancé she never quite got over, now a hedge fund mogul. He becomes her largest client, and Belle gets to see the life she might have had with him. While Henry campaigns to win Belle back, the sexually harassed women in her office take action to improve their working conditions and recruit a wary Belle into a secret "glass ceiling club" whose goal is to mellow the cowboy banking culture and get equal pay for their work. All along, Belle can sense the financial markets heading toward their soon-to-be historic crash and that something has to give - and when it does, everything is going to change: her marriage, her career, her world, and her need to keep her colleagues' hands to themselves.
From Maureen Sherry, a prize-winning writer and a former managing director on Wall Street (who never signed a nondisclosure agreement when she left), Opening Belle takes listeners into the adrenaline-fueled chaos of a Wall Street trading desk; the lavish parties; the lunchtime rendezvous; and, ultimately, the heart of a woman who finds it easier to cook up millions at work than dinner at home.

As a woman in the financial industry I absolutely loved this book! I'm an independent far removed from Wall Street but still connected with this story from beginning to end. I can't wait to have my husband listen to this and perhaps learn what it's like to be a female in any industry.
Thank you Ms. Sherry for writing it.
    Good story, so-so narration.
I enjoyed this compelling story, but the narration was too much. I could have done with less of the character voices; especially the male characters who all sounded like drugged up stoners.
    Women in Business
I am absolutely in love with this little novel! As an investment banker, I was able to connect with much of what Maureen Sherry had to say. Definitely a great read!
the good ol' boys of banking
Awesome book for banking and non-banking women alike. Most women and bankers in general don't make this kind of money, but the actions and thought processes are dead on.
Well done and kept me interested
I really liked it. I work in private equity and enjoyed hearing about a similar market where the culture is pretty similar. The author did a great job about including accurate industry information that was easy to follow but she didn't dumb it down so much that I felt as if she thought the reader was completely uneducated, the latter gets boring. I was hooked most of the book but it wasn't one that I couldn't wait to read or get to the next chapter. Overall I would recommend it to a friend!

    Great Story
Very good story about a painful time in history. It takes place in Australia but that is not the only place such things happened. Good character development. Good story. I've listened every available minute since I started the book.

Again I fell in love with and felt the heart breaks and joys of the characters. I usually only listen to books as I crochet. but with books by this author I couldn't stop listening. the narrator does an excellent job making the book even more enjoyable.
