the structure, the POV's, the characters, the world building, the way systemic oppression is interwoven into this fantasy narrative .... makes this book one you will either hate or fall madly in love with.

With this book I really needed to savour and digest everything that was revealed within those chapters about Damaya, Syenite and Essun ... to have my mind blown towards the end

Since I've just finished the first installment, that sort of left my heart in ruin ... I've decided that I need some time to properly recuperate before I pick up the sequel. So far this was a truly magnificent reading experience.

Very interesting world

Good stuff all around.

Not sure what I feel about the fact that none of the main characters had a normal sexual orientation.

Mostly it just felt like the book desperately tried to be very current with all the fuss about genders and whatnot.

Anyway the book didn't put too much focus on it so I wasn't distracted by it.

Struggled.

Struggled to get into this one. For me, the narration by Robin Miles was quite stilted. The muddied accents she put on for some of the characters were very strange. The sci-fi aspects of the story were very compelling though.

Fresh Fun!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Irvin D. Yalom holds the subject matter of psychology in a fresh, fun (and, yes, fictional) light. This alluring, seductive story is fresh and mature and down right interesting. Husbands and wives and gamblers and shysters and the whole kit-and-caboodle-- including psychologists-- spend their share of time on the couch. The characters are timid and feisty and right and wrong-- and Yalom skillfully interweaves their deceits and truths and varying perspectives to create a tapestry of seriously good story telling. Theres not a lot of action, just interesting, likable people and relatable problems and some happy endings. This book is loaded with snob-free intelligence and (I have to say it again)-- FUN.

Narrator Tony Pasqualini did a terrific job complimenting this delicious piece of work.

I would recommend this to psychotherapists, particularly guys, who need to remind themselves of the pitfalls of working so closely with human beings. This story shows how we cannot afford to be naive about our own nor others' weaknesses.

Well, I finished it

Really not a bad tale, tiresome in parts, cynical, predictable in some ways, but with occasional surprises. Really tough on analytic psychologists and humans in general. I had to finish it to see if it would come out as I expected. It did. Doubt I would read any other books by this author.

If you could sum up Avenue of Mysteries in three words, what would they be?

Surreal Mind Painting

What did you like best about this story?

Juan Diego, a 50 year old novelist travels to the Philippines to keep a promise he made forty years ago to a dying hippie as a 14 year old boy living in a garbage dump in Mexico with his younger sister/savant Lupe, who reads peoples minds (though only Juan can understand her.) It is a touching tale about a brilliant but reclusive dreamer who has lost everyone he ever loved as the years have gone by. He is a dreamer, because about half the book is narrated in a dream state. And believe me, like a narcoleptic, this guy can fall asleep on a dime,and always gets a bucks worth of dream meat every time he nods off. There are some very funny dialogues between Don Juan and Lupe during these dream/ flashbacks (between the now and the then). And if that's not confusing enough, when Juan arrives in the Philippines he is immediately adopted by a gorgeous mother and daughter team, who are certainly not what they appear to be (even after the book they remain so). The only way I can describe the story is that it melts together nicely like a surreal hot caramel sauce ladled over a real world frozen custard, both rich,and wonderful. To date, this is my favorite Irving book.

Absolutely. It was a big read, but it still went too fast.

My favorite book of the year!

Not his best work, but...

even a sub-par John Irving novel is better than what most other novelists produce. So giving a star rating is tough for me; I guess four stars is about right. His usual techniques shine through the strange story leaving his fingerprints all over the novel. He is brilliant at constantly moving his readers through time yet never losing them. True to form his protagonist is the most mundane of the characters, allowing all the other quirky, bizarre, or at least interesting characters in the story to come into clear view. Again, he is a master of such elements. For variety's sake, the words "New Hampshire" don't even appear anywhere in the book. He brings us into colorful and vibrant Mexico and the Philippines, a nice change.

Great Read!!!

This is a great read. The narrator great !!!! Very entertaining I would get to the point I could not get back soon enough to see what was happening. A very sweet love story and what life is all about

What a wonderful story! I listen as I drive for work in the car and sometimes wanted to drive further because I didn't want to stop for the day.

cute but predictable

Interesting story but after the first chapter you can guess the whole entire story. The best part of the book was the narrator. Erin Bennett didn't make the male characters sound like dorks or weirdos. Great job!

not my favorite.

Story was very bland. Ive enjoyed this natrator and author on other recordings but this fell quite short.

Mediocre At Best

This was the first novel I ever read by Ms. Noble but I probably won't read any more. I found the writing mediocre, at best and boring at worst. The story was tired and predictable. I found Margot to be very selfish. She didn't even realize that she used the fine folks of Crescent Cove to make her comeback in the design world and then deserted them. Don't waste your time with Shelley Noble. Read something by Barbara O'Neal/Samuel instead of you want some quality writing.

These comments address the The Tucker Series, as of this writing four novels written by David Johnson. All of the unabridged audiobooks are narrated by Laural Merlington. Lengths vary from just under six hours to just over ten. I was introduced to the first book via an Audible Daily Deal and enjoyed the story enough to finish the entire series.

The stories center around the lead character, Tucker. Tucker is an elderly woman, a victim of child abuse, who has been saddled with the raising of her three grandchildren. The setting is a life of extreme poverty in rural Tennessee.

My initial reaction is positive with a few codicils. Working through all four novels became a bit tedious, many areas a bit too preachy for my taste .. especially in books three and four. The characters were also very teary, lots of crying and angst. For those squeamish of the topic, some terrible child abuse is vividly described. There are many instances that had me rolling my eyes some situations and character behavior lacks credibility.

Reason I liked these stories? Character development and narration. David Johnson does a terrific job with the character of Tucker. Im sure youll find other characters in the stories that are well developed and believable. Narration by Merlington is excellent unique voices for all characters.

If you are interested in a familial tale, with character development exceptional, you will enjoy The Tucker Series.

If youre turned off by books that are very preachy and loaded with christian values, these are not for you.

The Tucker series books should be read in order!

This is Book 4 in the Tucker Series. Almost 20 years have passed since Tucker's Way and Tucker's three grandchildren (August, March, and April) are now adults. This is March's book. We finally find out who his father is, and that he is a very bad man.

This is a superb novel that may deserve a 5 star rating, but it has a bit much religion for me. Nevertheless. March On does fill in some previously unknown aspects of March's life. This novel, like the others in the series, is classified as in the contemporary fiction genre; however, as a stand alone novel it fits better in the mystery/thriller category.

Narration is superb!

I recommend all books in the Tucker series.

Phenomenal series!!

Happened upon the first book in this series and have been enthralled right through the last. Gripping story and layered characters kept me coming back for more. Great read with a deeper message. I recommend this series to all.

fun but silly

This is one of those super easy to read, whodunit. Entertaining enough for a car ride, but it certainly does not offer anything new or particularly exciting.

Okay...But not even close to Gone Girl

The Good Neighbor was a quick read. Fairly predictable, except for the stupid ending. No real exciting twists. And the prose was flat. Narration was decent, but there wasn't enough definition between characters and I got confused about who was speaking at times. The story was good enough to hold my attention, but it was nowhere near Gone Girl or The Girl On The Train. Those books were skillfully written and expertly paced. The prose, haunting and gut-wrenching and mesmerizing. The plots, mind-blowing. You believed even in their unlikeliness. But The Good Neighbor was a good try. Just don't compare it to greatness.

Easy audio book

Good story, short story, easy listening to. I would recommend this book for a nice car ride.

Quirky romantic adventure

Entertaining romantic adventure for an Outlander fan, but you dont have to be. Heroine is charmingly flawed, full of insecurities but full of spirit. Some surprise twists. As cute as this is in a way, this could happen to anyone, and that makes it all the more charming.

The narrator really hit the mark on being sassy and vulnerable at the same time, and got the quirky feel of the writing. Having been to Scotland, I can say that the accents have just the right mix of authenticity and being able to understand them. Great mix of voices and characters.

Highly entertaining, great characters

A cute romantic caper in the highlands, funky characters that are full of surprises, and a pretty good story. I liked Emma a lot and found myself relating to her more than I expected, for such a light hearted romp. Its not my usual kind of thing, but Im glad I gave it a listen. Particularly for the narrator Romy Nordlinger, who really shines in this one. You can tell shes having fun with the ironic romantic ups and downs, and a host of diverse characters. She did a great job.

Good, worth a credit

I didnt really believe the plot as much as I would have liked, but overall this was very enjoyable, and I liked the narrator and all the characters. The main character was very funny, good dry delivery.

Horrible Narrating

I was looking forward to listening to this book, after having finished the big eight narrated by the wonderful Davina Porter.

Unfortunately, I can't even get through the first chapter. Narrator Romy Nordinger has a sharp pitched nasal voice that is just plain irritating. Also, the performance was so poor I felt like she was reading a story to a group of kids rather than embodying the character. I couldn't get past the sound of her voice or her delivery to listen and enjoy the story. I know this is very critical, but honestly I was so put off I won't be listening to any of her other narrations. Time to get the book in print :(

A fun trip, enjoyable listen

This book is just plain fun. I love the character of Emma, and her looking to find her own Fraser. Its both funny and touching and makes me want to go to Scotland. I particularly liked the narrator, Romy, who has just the right mix of sensitivity and humor, shes one of my favorites. If anybodys looking for Outlander with this, thats not what it is. But I thought the ride was thoroughly enjoyable.

Poweerful, intense, inspiring, & beautiful!

Novels simply do not get better than David Johnson's 5 book Tucker series. April's Rain, her tears, is Book 3. I had to stop for lighter fare after Book 2 due to the intensity. Now I'm ready for March On which is book 4. Laural Merlington narrates the audiobook and she does a great job.

Book 5, Who Will Hear Me When I Cry, is not available (yet?) in audiobook format, so I guess I'll have to read it in Kindle ebook format. Audible, how about Book 5?

My genres of choice are all in the mystery/thriller category, but I am very happy I found this contemporary fiction series.

I recommend this series with one reservation: avowed atheists may not like the religious aspect which is present but not overwhelming. It is certainly far less intensely religious then novels by Catherine Coulter or Joel C Rosenberg.

Anthony Doerr is one of the best writers of our time

I like to listen to audiobooks when I'm taking road trips. Last year I happened upon All The Light We Cannot See, my favorite book of all time. For the trip I just took I chose About Grace.

Mr. Doerr has such a way with words, it's incredible. He also has a talent for weaving together the stories of different people, bringing the, together in a meaningful way.

Listen to About Grace, you won't be disappointed.

A good read and listen - but slow going

A beautifully written book and excellent narration. I enjoyéd the first half immensely, but found the second half drag on too long. You will like this book if you are interested in stories of the heart, and do not mind that there is little action to keep your interest otherwise peaked.

A modern story of Job

Sad, endearing characters. Winkler is representative of the curiosity, loneliness, and hope so many of us feel. Redemption comes with a high price. The language and descriptions are exquisite.

Sweet story beautifully written

Although the story begins a little slow, About Grace, like Doerr's other work, is written so well, so descriptively, that it easy to imagine a man's fear of his own tortured dreams. Doerr writes elegantly using his words like a musical instrument painting beautiful pictures of the countries which he describes. Brutally cold Alaska and the warmth of the sun on a tropical island, Doerr takes you with his characters as they live out their lives.
