I expected much more than I received.

What would have made Joseph Smith better?

The title is very misleading. The story contains occasional references to Joseph Smith. It is really a book about the Mormon history and the main character's (not Joseph Smith) involvement in it.

The Secret Garden.

He was a man of God. The story would have been much better if it would have focused on Jospeh Smith and his story.

This is not a biography of Joseph Smith but rather a series of journal entries from a fictitious character who is an early convert to Mormonism. This character takes the listener through the process of his conversion, his gathering to Zion in Kirtland, Missouri, and Nauvoo and the persecutions and troubles of those time periods. The character interacts with Joseph Smith along the way but this is not a book about Joseph Smith per se. As a convert, the character portrays the events through the lens of a believer though the author includes the other side of the story via apostates or the main character's own internal debates as events unfold.

I found the book entertaining and a worthwhile listen because I understood what the book was before I started. In that regard, the title of the book is misleading. The author's portrayal of historical events were accurate and his writing style was very appropriate to the time period and kept me engaged. If you are interested in learning more about the early history of the LDS Church in an entertaining way then you will enjoy this book.

I will not spoil the ending but there is a twist at the end that some reviewers did not like. Though I knew something was coming, the twist caught me by complete surprise and I thought that it was an incredible move by the author (in a good way). It proved to me that the author was out to write a great book and not just follow a traditional script.

First I'll make clear that this is an account of Joseph Smith's life as if being told by the journal entries of a fictional character who became friends with him and witnessed most of the major events of the early religion as it developed during the life of its founder. However, the accounts being retold by the fictional friend are drawn from actual historical accounts given by others and Joseph Smith himself during that time. The author took care to research heavily into what life would have been like during the early 1800's in New York, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, etc. and recounts the historical events in the form of a story.

Pirate Tale

Supposed to be related to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure island. Perhaps. I think it is better, than Treasure Island.

More of a fictional account of young John Paul Jones, before he became famous, than anything else.

Left me wanting to hear the rest of the story.

Truly Delightful

I have loved " Treasure Island " since I was a boy a just had to listen to this . While I would have like to had more of Old Long John Silver more prominent in the story it is still a delightful story to set your sail by for a high seas adventure.

I loved the narrator and the way he brought each character to life. I especially loved the Scottish brogue.

I liked the character of John Paul Jones.

Tried to like it.

I had just finished listening to Treasure Island and liked it well enough to give this book a try. I tried to like it, but just couldn't get there. I finished it, but only barely. The narrator is not the best, certainly not compared to David Buck on Treasure Island. None of the characters were compelling or likable to me. I don't know this to be true, but I got the distinct impression that this was the author's first book. It may have been written with children in mind, like Treasure Island, but even so, it was not compelling. Maybe the comparison to a classic like Treasure Island is not perfectly fair, but it is inevitable if you set yourself up as a sequel. I've listened to lots of books from this site and only not finished one of them, but this was close to being the second. Again, I didn't hate it, just didn't like it enough to be happy about using my time and credits on it.

Good concept, poor execution

Was looking forward to the book, and over all it was ok. But the plot had too much unnecessary complexity, and reliance on a narrative involving the American Revolution as background, even though it was clear that the author knew little of that event.

Among other things was the presentation of Thomas Jefferson in 1775 as an elderly and important statesman, at a time when he was 25 years old, and still an obscure Virginian who had done none of the stuff yet for which he would become famous. Other errors of historic detail abound.

Hasts and Thous

An amazing early American novel. I have never read before. I actually can't wait to read again. Stongly recommend. It was so good that I wanted to know someone who had just read it so we could talk about it! The reader was very good. Her voice was VERY versatile. The only drawback is with all "hasts and thous" you REALLY have to pay attention to every word...not a good "drivng" book.

A fine reading

Shelly Frasier does fine: clear diction and slow pace, which are appropriate for more challenging prose. But why so many complaints about Hawthorne's language? "Thees and thous"? He was writing in the 1840s, not the 1600s (the era of the fiction, which he emulates in his characters' speech), so it's not that far from our own era. Or is this nation now only capable of reading TV GUIDE listings for the next JERSEY SHORE?

If you could rename The Scarlet Letter, what would you call it?

"Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the word 'tremulous' about 800 times."

Good reading of a classic. Unfortunately, since Hawthorne's prose wanders like a caffeine addled child, it can be hard to track what's going on at certain points in the narration.

doesn't hold up to other period classics

This was my first reading of Scarlet Letter. Canadians aren't as exposed to it in high school/college as Americans. I can see that it endures for its landmark importance in American literature, but I would not have enjoyed the novel for itself had I not just finished Susan Cheever's American Bloomsbury, with its biographical details of Hawthorne's life, especially his relationship with Margaret Fuller whom she postulates as at least partial inspiration for Hester's courage, strength and philosophy.

With Hawthorne's background in mind and several audiobooks on 19th centruy American history recently "read," I enjoyed the lengthy "customs house" sketch/intro more than the rest of the novel.

Eliot and Hardy wrote later in the century than Hawthorne, but not that much later, and they were so much more adept at re-creating earlier periods in their nation's history and mentality.

Her voice is versatile and entrancing as she tells a story that makes you drop everything and listen. This isn't just a book to take to the beach or read while you wait. Gorgeous prose with suspence

The descriptions were so beautifully written and the metaphors, creative. I could not possibly choose one scene.

I wanted to love this book...

So I bought this book because it was recommended to me under books like Historian. Which this book is sort through of like Historian in the smallest of ways.... it is kind of like The Historian. Old haunted houses, the old scientific debate on the connection of twins, having to prove 3 scientific facts with old new papers and the help of a historian.... But it falls very short of The Historian. now some of the book had genius ideas on life itself. Some of the phrases and ideas thought of by this old woman really where interesting. The characters were ok... the plot was ok... was it cliff hanging or a book I couldn't but down... no. The awesome narrorators from Audioble did very well. the voices matched the story and gave it some heft that would have been missed without it... I wanted sometimes to love this book... but I liked it so I guess that's well enough.

Captivating....until the end

I wish I could find more books by this author. I would often rewind to listen again to her elegant prose. The book was captivating until the sudden ending when everything was all wrapped up with a bow. It needed a few more chapters to build up to it. Lynn Redgrave and Ruthie Henshall are perfect! Two of the best I've heard.

LOVED it!

I liked this audio book so much I purchased the book after listening to it, and read it on my own. The narration was very good and helped to move this interesting story along.

Atmospheric and suspenseful

This wonderful novel explores the lives and relationships of a handful of women and men in post-war London. The writer has created very realistic, believable characters; as a reader I felt I really got to know them and cared about them. The structure of the book is very effective, as it moves backwards in time to reveal how the characters met and what has brought them to this point in the story. This adds a nice touch of suspense. Sarah Waters brilliantly recreates the atmosphere of London during the blitz and in the years immediately following the war. I didnt want the book to end, which for me is always a good measure of a novel.

An interesting book, which I failed to finish.

I bought this book because I had been looking for a fictional novel focussing on Londoners during WWII. In this, I suppose I was always going to be disappointed.

This is the story of four people living through the war, but I suppose I'd been expecting more detail of life in London - especially given that the summary mentioned Kay driving ambulances. However the book focuses very strongly on the personal lives and problems of the character, as opposed to the overarching theme of war.

The queer themes were completely unexpected, but not unwelcome, I'm always on the hunt for some good queer lit. and was pleased to find some set in an era long past.

The problem, I feel, was twofold - one, the characters were, for the most part, difficult to relate to and their inner monologues often lead me to dislike them, and two, the story seemed to drag to the point where very interesting moments became dull and unending.

The narrator did a superb job. I was a little unsure of her performance when I began the audiobook, but as the story progressed I began to feel that her reading suited the book very well.

I did my best to complete this novel because I did enjoy the plot, but in the end I simply couldn't make myself continue listening. Perhaps I'll pick it up again one day, I rather hope I do for the sake of completion, but if I do I don't doubt that I will find it just as difficult to complete as I have this time.

One of the best narrators I've heard!

Ruby

The book is good, but the narrator is pretty bad. Not enough inflection in her tone and you can hear her swallowing saliva - it's disgusting! I want to hear the next book in the series, but since it is the same narrator - I think I will read it instead.

I usually like Lauraine Snelling's stories but this one did not keep me waiting for more.

Alexandra O'Karma was very low keyed, melancholy, total lack of excitement in her voice. and spoke extremely slow so that I had to increase the speed on my kindle.

Yes I already bought several books and am hoping the rest may be more exciting.

Ruby, and her sister Opal travel travel at the wish of their father to claim their inheritance. When they arrive, the "inheritance' is a brothel. This book is how Ruby and Opal transform this brothel into a hotel, and transform the town of Little Missouri (not Little Missery) into a decent place to live.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ruby?

When Ruby figures out (or was told) what a brothel was!

Great voices, makes you feel like you are really there.

An Painfully Long Engagement

Would you try another book from Sebastien Japrisot and/or Isabel Keating?

Interesting premise, likeable & fairly fleshed-out main caracters, but loses the reader along the journey. The author has skill to create some interesting scenarios, but is unable to craft the longing the reader should have felt through Mathilde. Perhaps a fantastic short story.

No, this was a valiant attempt and some parts held my interest.

I enjoyed the narrator. Her voice embodied what I felt Mathilde should sound like. Determined, strong...

Yes, I enjoyed the original love story between the two main characters and liked the interaction between Mathilde and the detective.

An excellent listen!

I thoroughly enjoyed the story - the plot follows Mathilde, a young french woman as she tries to discover what happened to her missing fiancee in the closing months of World War I.

The narrator was great, although the number of French names and places (pronounced with a flawless and therefore hard-to-follow French accent) that are introduced at the beginning of the book were a bit hard for me to keep up with. I got it figured out eventually, but I had a hard time distinguishing characters at first. The one weakness this audiobook has is one that all suspense audiobooks have - as the mystery evolved, I found myself wanting to go back and re-read certain crucial scenes that happen at the beginning of the book (which is pretty-near impossible with audiobooks).

Regardless, I highly recommend this audiobook!

Imogen since she portrayed a strong, principled, passionate and smart woman; very relatable even to our modern women.

Hey tone, expression and accent brings the book alive. I can easily imagine being in the Old English City and part of the Ton.

I absolutely love Amanda Quick.... Was introduced at the Roanoke Public Library in 1995 and I've been a fan since. The books do come alive when narrated, especially in an English accent... Audible has blessed me since I now have unlimited access all the way in the Caribbean.

Amanda Quick always writes books that are fun, light reading. They're not Pulizer, but they ARE enjoyable.....!!!

There are three books in this series once again the English accent made it for me, I enjoyed every word it left me wanting more of the pair i do hope there will be more on them, they are kinda family now

Mystery and romance

Delightful listen. The mystery was very nicely constructed. I loved the returning characters as well as a couple of new ones that were introduced. The story took some nice twists and turns and ended happily. The narrator does a great job of creating the characters. Worth the listen. I'm sorry the next Tobias and Lovina story hasn't been written yet.

An excellent program but a little slow in places

Well written by Stephen Lawhead and well read by Fredrick Davidson who has a dry and lofty tone of voice, but he makes the effort to pronounce words that are difficult for English speakers. The book seems somewhat disjointed as it skips from episode to episode in Arthur's life from boyhood to defeat of the Vandals. Merlin comes through sounding more like Gandalf in some places as he descends into the Earth on a voyage out of time.

Filling in the Blanks

A pleasant revisitation with our heros, with a new enemy to conquer. "Pendragon" details futher some of the events mentioned as having happened in the first three books. A very worthwhile 'listen', good fun!

Adventure Plus

Well written and narrated, I throughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Pendragon Series

it's a Great story and a Great series. I Love it. I will read it again.
