Highly engaging story with some great narration

Margaret of Anjou was married to King Henry VI of England. When Henry was grasped by bouts of insanity that made him an unsuitable ruler for England, Margaret stepped in to take his place. Her motivation at that point of time was to keep the crown safe for her son, Edward of Westminster. I guess it would have been difficult to predict that this woman would some day become one of the most important player in the War of Roses. In this book Susan Higginbotham tells us Margarets story, a view-point which has been some what if not completely lacking in historical fiction.

Margaret has often been portrayed in various historical fiction as a supporting character, mostly painted in a negative shade, hence a story that is told from her point of view only makes the book more interesting. Higginbothams Margret is a strong-willed, intelligent woman who does what she feels is in the best interest of her family. Her motives and actions seem to be justified when we look at things from her perspective.

Not Much History Discussion, Robot Voice

I was hoping to hear about the history used in All The Light We Cannot See, instead this gives a literary analysis. There are some good symbolism connections but I felt that a majority of this was simply summarizing the book's sections. Disappointed. Plus, the reader sounds like a robot. I really wonder if it is. I almost turned it off in the first 5 mins bc of the voice. Sorry to be harsh but just being honest.

Save your dollar.

unlike the phenomenal book this is supposed to be analysing, this has bery little substance. there are no real insights or revelations.

History with a twist

History can be dry and dull or it can be so interesting depending on how it is communicated. I found this novel to be a wonderful interpretation of the events leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Many of the characters are fictional, some are real, most of the events are real, one key event at the end is fictional. I suppose this is so that in the sequel which I haven't yet read we will learn how that one key difference might have affected history. Highly recommend this audio book even if you have read plenty about Pearl Harbor in the past.

Good historical fiction

This is a very listenable account of the events leading to and about the attack on Pearl Harbor. In a manner different from most western books on Pearl Harbor, the emphasis of the story is how the Japanese got to point where the attack was justified (from their view of course). The story walks the line of telling you the Japanese thinking without either condeming, excusing or supporting it. It provides a glimpse into the cultural differences between the Japanese and the west and how that plays into the story.

The written description of the attack itself is very well done and you feel like you can see it in front of you.

It is one of thoise books where you are sorry to see it end and want to read what happens during the rest of the war. I would love to see the story continue through the use of the atomic bombs.

I would have given it a 5 but I thought that it would have benefited from more specific historical information and more details about code breaking efforts.

Otherwise a great historical novel...

State of Readiness?

As someone who only relatively recently became interested in history, I enjoyed this book very much. I've always wondered about the reasoning behind the attack on Pearl Harbor and our immediate response. This book answered the questions I had. However, if this is an accurate portrayal of the readiness and response time of our troops at Pearl Harbor, at the time, I would be shocked and horrified, because it seemed to be non existent. Until the third wave (that never actually happened), there wasn't a response from our troops. But, I take solace in the fact that this could never happen again.

Great Series

A gread read. Gingrich and Forstchen do not disappoint. Their Civil was series has a great Followup with this series, if you loved the civil war series you will love this series almost as much

Wow, what I never knew I didn't know!

The alternative history part of this book is later on in the execution of the attack, but the lead up really opened my eyes to the real world of the 1930's era. Most of this book is "set-up" and Newt does an amazing job of laying the foundations for this pivotal event.

Good story, but. . .

The story is good, if you like period romances. It's well written, and I like the characters. But the recording is so chocked full of mispronunciations, it's hard to keep the serious tone of the story. Where there is a three syllable word, get ready for a laugh. Unfortunately, I can't give anyone full benefit of the humor. Think of the phrase: "Her feelings were annihilated and she sank into a deep sense of ennui." And let your imagination run wild.

Beautiful Historical Story

This book was a lovely soap opera style story packed full of excitement, romance, and drama. I loved the characters and the writing and narration were great. I've already spent a credit on the next one in the series.

Well...

I thought i was going to like this book more, I'm not sure if is the narrator that made me dislike it or if is the story that feels repetitive. Not planning to read the next book.

Magnificent! Simply Magnificent!!!

This was such an excellent book! Well done in audio form! The ONLY reason it is listed in YA is because it does not have explicit sex scenes, but the steamy romance is there! As is the plot and intrigue! I cannot give this book and the entire series enough stars! Amazing! Do yourself a favor and try this one out!

Pure Genius!!

The characters are wonderful. You almost love to hate some of them. It's just a great story and it really shows how it is with the "rich and famous"

This was one of my favorite Audible books. Simon Tolkien's compelling novel brings the coal mining industry of England during the early part of the 20th Century and World War I (in particular, the Battle of the Somme) to life, with all of its human tragedies. The narration was superb.

Another Great Persephone read

Like all of the audiobooks published by Persephone, this book is very professionally done. Lucy Scott's reading of the stories reinforces the mood and feel of these stories which tell us a lot about England during WWII "on the home front" and also about how human beings interact and react. I will be keeping my eye out for more forgotten treasures from this publisher.

Disappointingly one-note and mean-spirited

Mollie Panter-Downes wrote a series of "Letter[s] from London" for The New Yorker during World War II and for the next few decades. I checked out these articles recently using The New Yorker's archives. They're surprisingly unsentimental, in fact quite snarky at times -- and so are these short stories (which also appeared in that magazine). It's hard to know whether Panter-Downes was simply a bit nasty and sharp-tongued herself, or if she was just giving The New Yorker the sort of tone it preferred. Whatever the case, these rather acid little sketches are more interested in the evils of the British class system than in the war, and the enemy here is not the Germans, it's privileged upper-class country ladies who look upon Cockney evacuees as "the lower orders" even while they're opening their homes to them. Panter-Downes' attitude toward her characters (ranging from ever-so-slightly arch to mocking . . . to outright sneering) seems to apply to just about everyone -- the poor are oafish, the rich are snobs, men are either callous or effete, and Englishwomen in general are competitive, shallow, and status-obsessed -- and unfortunately Lucy Scott's reading only emphasizes the stories' mean-spiritedness. She can't resist exaggerating the condescension and hypocrisy in everyone's voice, lest some listener in the back row fail to get it.

"A Woman of Destiny"

I have read every single book written by Orson Scott Card, and this is Card at his best. Though I was first drawn to his works through my love of science fiction, it was his religious writing that kept me coming back for more. I myself am not a member of the Latter-Day Saints, nor am I affiliated with any other religion; however, religious writing (both fact and fiction) fascinate me, especially when presented by a sincere adherent and from a personal point of view.

"Saints", formerly published as "A Woman of Destiny", is a wonderful example of fiction that puts forth some of the doctrines of a faith without proselytizing, without becoming pedantic, and without necessitating any previous knowledge of said faith. In addition, it offers a well-written and -conceived story about a single woman's struggle with the trials and vicissitudes of life during the Industrial Revolution in the early nineteenth century-- the injustice, political and personal, inherent in being an impoverished woman during this time, and most of all, her endeavors to find faith in God, to find happiness, and to find happiness in her faith.

As usual, Card displays his astonishing understanding of the female mind, and Dinah Kirkham is a strong, believable character. I have long hoped for an audio production of this novel-- yes, I have read it in traditional paper format and I am still buying the audio version, as I have with so many other books by Card-- and if the narrative cast is any indication, this will be an excellent listen.
