Very Well Written

This is a well written and detailed account of the events of June 6, 1944. Between the personal anecdotes from the soldiers and the overall picture presented, I felt that I really got a good picture of the magnitude and history of that day.

Now, I know what happened actually

A great blow by blow account including the huge amount of planning and preparation involved. A compilation of historical recount and direct observation from many interviews. Those direct observations made it very personal and all the more compelling. The author doesn't pull any punches on the mistakes in planning and execution by all those involved.

Interesting and educational

If you're a fan of trivia/interesting facts or stories, you'll love this book. I enjoyed the layout of this book, with short chapters ending with some trivia questions to help you think more about what you listening.

comprehensive overview

It is an amazing description of the events of WWII. Full of details and presented in a very organized way. I am loving this book. It is really helping me understand the full history.

Great detail.

The book itself is excellent in most aspects though. It was a unique and mostly interesting approach to look at each day of the war and see the events unfold before us in a day-by-day, blow-by-blow approach.

a disaster

This is an excellent description, though not a blow-by-blow account, of the 1948 ethnic cleansing or Nakba. The author uses Zionist materials to show how the plan to expel the Palestinians was developed and carried out. I would have liked a more detailed description of the line from Plan Aleph to Plan Daleth, the final solution used by the Haganah.

Courage to tell the Truth

Ilan Pappe is one of the few Israelis to have the courage to look at Israel's original sin, and he has paid for that courage. This book details the planning and execution of the theft of the Palestinians' land by the Zionists. Well written and documented, by an author who can hardly be called "anti-semitic".

very interesting

The information contained is really startling. I never knew about the tactics used by Israel when creating a state. This book is an eye opener written by an Israeli Jew who seems to want peace and reconciliation. A little biased toward the Palestinians but it portrays detailed picture the events.

A Must Read!

Incredible and disturbing. Putting a spotlight on the actions of the terrorist state of Israel will help people understand why Americans must learn the truth. Our government and media are virtually controlled by AIPAC and other pro-Israel organizations. All one has to do is google Douglas Feith and Larry Franklin to see how our politicians have been duped into invading Iraq, etc.

After reading this book it is vital that you read Mearsheimer and Walt's "THE ISRAEL LOBBY AND U.S. FOREIGN POLICY". Then you will begin to really understand what is going on. With books like "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine" one can begin to understand the importance of taking back our country from these vile lobbyists.

This book was censored at its first publication!

In a dead up to the recent release of the movie "The Post" I wanted to know more about some of the real-life central characters within the Washington Post. I chose this one because the other tome available on Katharine Graham was 30 hours of listening! This is about 7, and within it, a great history of how the Post has made its way in the political swamp of Washington DC and how Katharine Graham came to lead it.

Very, Very interesting factual narrative!

I really enjoyed this book

it was a great look back at what all happened during Watergate and Beyond. it certainly does point out the fact that Washington really is a swamp and continues to be and always has been.

The rest of the story.

Well written. very interesting perspective from the French point of view. Atrocities that didn't seem to make their way to my history classes along with a view from "behind the scenes" and within the fight.

I believe the author did a excellent job of portraying the emotions and character of those involved. He also gave insight as to how certain factions came to hold differing opinions of others, dependant upon their knowledge and experience of their deeds.

Good read.

Outstanding

This book is excellent in describing some of the factors tat occurred before the start of World War II that weakened both the French and British as opposed to Germany.

It is also excellent in its discussion of military actions in France AFTER Dunkirk until the surrender of France weeks later.

The perspective of the author is more from the French than the British which is definitely not the standard post-War narrative.

Strongly recommend this title for WWI buffs.

The fall of Communism brilliantly recounted in a page-turner you can't put down.

The most eloquent and mesmerizing history book about an ineloquent president who found himself at a critical turning point in the 20th century. Jeffrey Engel, the Director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University, has written a page turner more familiar in the fiction genre. Researching the Bush 41 archives, interviewing most of the still living participants and poring through thousands of documents and contemporary news sources, Engel artfully explores the essential conundrum of America's reaction to the cascading fall of Communism. Was it really the end? What if the light at the end of the tunnel is indeed an oncoming train? George H.W. Bush was wise enough to refrain from gloating, and disciplined enough to refrain from embracing Gorbachev's gambit lest it was a trap.

Engel tells the story with great wit and an eye for the absurd. I keep rereading the chapter about the fall of the Berlin Wall, which probably was the result of a tired press secretary mistakenly announcing that the gates would be opened immediately, followed by an unanswered phone call from the Brandenburg Gate commander seeking confirmation. An incredible story made mind-numbingly tedious

What would have made Stalingrad better?

This book was tedious beyond description. This is a made-up but accurate example of quite nearly every single paragraph: "110th Rifle Unit of Zikov's 2nd Army Division surrounded the breakout of the Romanian 4th Infantry and the Hungarian 43rd Division, closing the pincers around the salient on the Don bridgehead established by 15th Corps of the 6th Army suppliemented by the diversion of the remnants of 3rd Tank Corps to 6th Army's flanks. Heavy fighting ensued. Across the Don, Zhukov mustered the 112th Rifles of the 3rd Mechanized Cavalry of 2nd Army, which had been low on rations and ammunition since the advance of 3rd Army on the Operation Neptune breakout of November 2nd, delayed from November 1 because of the failure of the tanker trucks of 32nd Supply Corps to navigate the cratered road from Company Headquarters". Hours and hours and hours of this. Kudos to the narrator for keeping me engaged as long as he did. I eventually decided to give up before finishing. I did not intend it as a bedtime story but I could not stay awak when I listened to the droning on the movement of army divisions. An utterly pointless rehashing of the bureuacratic minutiae of one history's largest, bloodiest, dramatic, and most momentous battles and one that decided the fate of the Third Reich two years before the Western Allied invasion of Normandy. I'm exchanging this for "Enemy at the Gates".

What could David M. Glantz and Jonathan M. House have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Good listen

Most WW2 obsessives like myself will know all about Glantz. This is a condensed version of his 5 volume epic and it stands well despite being a lot shorter.

Obviously being an audible book no maps or photos. Still for anyone looking for an audible book on Stalingrad then this is the one.

Phenomenal read!

This book was fascinating from start to finish. I highly recommend for anyone who is a fan of WW2 era content.

Concerned Citizens Infiltrated Nazi Groups

Between 1933 and 1946 a Jewish attorney and other concerned citizens infiltrated various Nazi and fascist organizations in Los Angeles and nearby areas. Reports were made to local police who often seemed supportive of the groups or to military concerns and finally to FBI and the HUAC committee in congress. Plans for subterfuge of various industries or assassination plots were conveyed to people who could act on the information. The influence of Hitler's representatives to the movie studios in Hollywood is amazing for the bullying studios into censoring scenes for the marketing to Germany and actual threats regarding actors or personnel who still had family in Germany. I have enjoyed listening to this book twice already. The author should be commended for the research involved to create this excellent book. Historians certainly seem to have whitewashed the communist and Nazi groups that were functioning in the USA during this period. Everyone should read this book because educators sure do not cover material like this. People might look at the old movies differently if they knew of the influences Hitler and Stalin's minions had.
