Our 6 yr son really enjoyed this audio story.

What IS it about mice and rats?

Part of me shudders to think of the mice and a rat living together in a doll house in the Macy's department store, taking nighttime nibbles from the cheeses and meats in the deli case. When I lived near downtown Minneapolis, I loved the deli at Dayton's and often bought entrees to take to work for my dinner.

Another part of me shrugs, lets the thought go and decides to just enjoy the story of how two mice and a rat discover the truth. One wintry evening, Marvin makes his way into a store to get out of the cold. He discovers the deli and a dollhouse. He decides to move in and then goes to find his two friends, Fats and Raymond, to bring them to join him there.

Fats is entranced by the store Santa. When Santa goes missing, the three friends decide to find him.

Marvin reminded me of Geronimo Stilton in many ways.

I give this book a thumbs up and recommend it to anyone who enjoys tales of the tiny triumphing over the big.

Rather buy another book

I read it to my class of Grade 3's and 4's, they liked it, I felt that it was wanting on many levels - first of all, most kids nowadays can't read cursive, second, the story was lacking, third, yeah, the book was lacking generally, a story with not much direction, a shame from Toni Morrison

My first graders loved it - and so did I!

All three tales in this story book capture children's hearts and imaginations. It was fun to have my class vote on whether they sympathized more with the ant or the grasshopper. They were unanimous in siding with the grasshopper. I'm buying this so I can read it year after year to my students. Thanks, Toni and Slade, for writing such a wonderful book.

Good children's book for older maybe middle school or high school students. As an adult, I liked it.

Improves Upon an Aesop's Fable! -- Outstanding New Themes Relevant to Our Era

I began this review responding to someone who gave the book one star because I felt so strongly the opposite. So, let me add my points here too:

The great thing about this book is that it is balanced and each of the characters has a grain of truth in his point of view. There is an astounding amount of subtlety amidst the energetic rhyming and classic elements of the tale. The character who is the artist (grasshopper) is tearful and only begins making his strident argument when his pride gets the best of him. There is a twist in that the ant looks back out sadly at his friend as well and we see that his wife appears pregnant -- so he has a good reason to be careful with his resources. Yet, the ant is not compassionate -- his downfall. The grasshopper's downfall is obvious, he is homeless and has himself to blame. Yet, he argue that he and his work are not worthless. And this is just my take on it -- the great thing about the book is that there are multiple legitimate conclusions one could come to. I think that the strength of the book is that some people will response in favor of one of the characters and others will have the opposite point of view. I am all for letting kids think and come to their own conclusions, debates, and discussions. To me, adding the starving artist theme to the tale is a significant and valuable update on the Aesop's fable -- and that is not an easy accomplishment to make!

Art is Work

Foxy G and Kid A play from dawn to dark all summer long. But when fall arrives, Kid A splits for work. Foxy G plays his groove, but Kid A does his chores, working from morning till night. When winter arrives, Foxy G nearly freezes in his cardboard box in the park. Foxy G goes to Kid A for help. Yet Kid A turns him away, even though Foxy G insists that "ART IS WORK." Foxy G is left to a field of snow, wondering just "who's got game?" This play on Aesop's Fables shows how anything can happen, how fortunes may rise and fall, upside down and back again.

Good rainy day book

Interesting read. We have this on audio recording as well as the book itself, and it is good. All the stories focus around a different type of fabric, yet the stories are quite diverse. It has some good morals and lessons to learn through the stories. I quite enjoyed this book.

An interesting book

This book comes from a small publisher and may be easily overlooked, but it shouldn't be. Batt has gathered several folktales from around the world with the theme of fabric and/or weaving. Griffin has done a marvelous job of using fabrics to illustrate the tales while reflecting the culture of each. This is a charming book with new tales and illustrations to share with children and adults alike. The fabrics are all vibrantly colored, making the illustrations a feast for the eyes. I kept finding new details every time I looked at a page. Each story is prefaced with an introduction about the fabric which will appear in the story. This would make a perfect gift for people interested in folklore or in weaving.

Amazing

The book is awesome it is so hot in this time of year so he wants to go on vacation but people keep calling him with problems so he misses 4 flights. So he ends up going to a hotel that's nasty and runs into his co-worker and they spend the day together .She reads him her magazine on things to do during summer. But over all its a great book and really interesting.

helps me to improve my english

It is my first audiobook. I was listening to Katie when I was in the US last summer for my holidays, while I was travelling with three kids. Now that I'm back to Italy it is very useful and funny for me.

Reasonably good but expensive

My 7 year old daughter seems to like this reasonably and so do I. However, it is too expensive for the amount of listening time it provides. A bundle of 4 books (1 - 4) on Amazon costs less than this.

Delightful

If you come to this expecting to find something along the lines of His Dark Materials, you'll be disappointed. But I get the feeling some people rate this lower because it's a different sort of book than they wanted... you can't blame the book for misplaced expectations. This is beautifully read with sound effects and effective music which, for once, doesn't overwhelm the reading. This is definitely a children's tale in the great fairy tale tradition, with truly nasty villains, supernatural forces, plucky heroes who triumph over their own foibles, and a happy ending (I'm sure that isn't a spoiler). I've listened twice and thoroughly enjoyed it, as I have all of Philip Pullman's books. Come in expecting a charming and fun tale and you won't regret that you did.

We are enjoying this story really. But, all things considered, it is a bit disappointing. The naming of people is a bit trite, if mildy amusing. My major complaint though lies with the audio quality. We have listened to dozens of audible books, as well as libray audio books, but have never encountered such troubles with volume differentiation. The narrator is loud and clear, and then we can't hear the dialogue done by the cast. So I crank the volume on the car stereo up, and AAAAHHH! the narrator comes back and blows us out of our seat belts. An unsettling problem. I am having trouble getting into the book, perhaps only because of this. My girls, 11 and 13, are enjoying it, despite the difficulties.

Good family listening in the car

We listened to this on a family ski trip so the mountains,snow and rocky crags meshed with the story well.

I love Philip Pullman and was not disappointed.

The production was mostly good but as a New Zealander I find English productions tend to lazily lapse into class conscious interpretations of texts. So for example Hildie and Peters mother spoke with a working class London accent which leads to the constantly distracting thought "what is a Cockney doing in the Swiss alps?" . It is quite off putting. As is usual in UK productions stupid or simple people have strong working class accents.

Fantastic!

Would you consider the audio edition of Magic Tree House to be better than the print version?

I always think a version in print is better (we like to encourage our children to read), but I do love that we can listen to these books in the car or for "quiet time".

Any additional comments?

We've purchased the first 18 books for my children (aged 4 and 5) and plan to continue through the series. Mary Pope Osborne does a great job; the only thing better would be if they were dramatized.

I love so many things about this series: That Jack and Annie are kind to one another, the positive messages about reading and the idea that reading can take you places, and the historical accuracy of each book. My kids love them!
