Good introduction to chapter books for young kids

My 4-year-old adores this entire book series. We typically read half a chapter each night and he was always excited to learn what was going to happen next.

Great Children's Series!

Shipwrecked! is the first of five books in The Adventures of Titch and Mitch series. Titch and Mitch are two school-age pixies who have been warned to never leave the valley because the outside world is dangerous, but Titch and Mitch just canât seem to follow the rules. They are always looking for adventure and have a real knack for finding all sorts.

The two brothers have a reputation of getting into sticky situations because of their curiosity but even they are surprised to find themselves in the middle of the ocean on a sinking ship. The crew has abandoned ship, but how can two boys only as tall as a squirrel save themselves?

Clever as always, Mitch and Titch wash ashore on a small beach where they are immediately met by Willy the water rat. Although he seems terrifying at first, Willy is actually very nice and takes the boys to meet the many animals living there. The brothers decide to make themselves comfortable among their new friends and find a cozy place under a hawthorn bush to live.

There is no shortage of adventures to be had on the island and the pixie brothers find themselves in the middle of many exciting, and sometimes frightening, escapades. Their cheerful personalities, creative solutions and brave behavior endear them to the other inhabitants of the island and they quickly become part of the family.

From a quirky yellow seagull to a fire-breathing dragon mouse, readers will eagerly follow Titch and Mitch from one caper to the next. The pixies are into something new and different so often that Shipwrecked! will captivate children with a wide range of interests and attention spans. The Adventures of Titch and Mitch series is certain to be a favorite for many!

What a wonderful Children's book

I truly loved this book and I believe my grandkids will too. It's full of fun, fantasy and friendship. but you forget it's fiction because the characters seem to come to life. Although I am an adult I am looking forward to reading the rest of the, "The Adventures of Titch and Mitch" books.

You have two pixies, who are brothers, that get into trouble because they are curious about the world around them and no matter how much trouble they get into they seem to come out alright and help others along the way.

I don't want to give anything away but this is a great book for children to learn about helping others and friendships. I'd recommend this to anyone who has children. If they can't read, it's well worth the time for you to read it to them.

We found that the stories were the right length and subtly taught the right ideals/morals for a 5years old.

horrible narration

The narration was so monotone and uninteresting it made a wonderful and exciting book seem boring. I downloaded this for my son and he could not get into and i couldn't blame him.

What would have made The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle better?

a different narrator - this is the one time i didn't sample before buying... bad, horrible, terrible idea. we didn't even make it 5min before the kids were begging to turn it off. what a waste of a credit!!!!

Great book ruined by a horrible reading

The voice and performance of this audio book is so horrible the book is not possible to listen to. My kids refused to listen to it because they couldn't stand the woman's voice. I tried a year later and couldn't make it past the first page.

Great book but you're going to have to read this one.

Great story for kids and adults alike!!

Want to pass the time on a trip with your kids? This is the perfect book! Your whole family will laugh out loud at this great story. The narrator does a wonderful job and really adds to the story with great voices. Excellent!!

Something for everyone

I owned this audiobook on cassette tape when I was a kid and hadnt heard it for probably 20 years. To find Audible had the very same recording that I had on cassette was quite a joy for me (yes it really is that old note the outro at the end that declares the publishing company can forward on any LETTERS to the authors or narrators). Its no exaggeration to say then that listening to Magnus Powermouse again was deeply nostalgic. It is a wonderful short story that is fantastically performed by Nigel Anthony. It brought a lot of memories back while at the same time uncovering humour and detail I was naïve to as a child. Something for everyone.

A firm favourite.

I loved this story as a child, so when a long car journey loomed it was a great choice for my two kiddos. They loved the story and are looking forward to listening to it again.

My sister had this on tape years ago and we would all listen to it. Very enjoyable and very clearly read by Nigel Anthony.

Just as enjoyable now as in the past

I had this audio book when I was little and loved it even though it was filled with "long words" that an average child would have no knowledge of. Now I'm in my twenties I thought I'd give this story another listen and am not surprised to find that I still love it. I have the added advantage of understanding those "long words" now without needing Roland the rabbit to translate for me.

Not a PC Telling

I grew up reading and listening to my mother reading Uncle Remus. It was a pleasure to hear the stories again. BUT... I was surprised to learn how my ear has been trained to the use of the "N" word and that it surprised me. I would suggest that a parent listen to the stories before letting their child hear them ... then explain that some racial words are no longer used although they still appear in older literature. In no way do I suggest that these tales be "cleaned up."

Enjoy the old stories as I did.

Strange version

Would you try another book from Joel Chandler Harris and/or Robin Field?

This is neither the original Uncle Remus nor the Joel Chandler version. I am not sure what version it is, but it has some very different tellings of the Uncle Remus stories.

A Woman-Based Utopia

This woman-based utopia sounds like paradise, and is certainly a nice contrast from the other, patriarchal-style utopias that have gotten so much attention over the years.

This book is really awkward to read in public because of the cover.

Moderately entertaining

The most amazing thing about these stories is the extreme feminism displayed for the years that they were written. But for modern audiences, it's a bit over-the-top yet uninteresting. The stories were moderately interesting and moderately thought-provoking. It's a classic that doesn't translate well into our present.

A nice little afternoon read....

A generally overlooked gem of a utopian novella that makes for a pleasant experience. The treatment is calmer and more down to earth than A Brave New World, and is more thoughtful and meditative than Looking Backward. Gilman's feminism celebrates motherhood above all, and embraces Christianity. In a time when we're reconsidering gender roles and marriage in society, Herland is particularly relevant and insightful.

Highly recommended for the fan of utopian literature and early feminist thought.

Enjoyable Read

Herland is one of my favorite stories. If you enjoy feminist publications this is one to read. It sometimes makes me laugh and other times makes you really think about how American Society works.

No illustrations to be found in this 1905 edition

The Tale of Mrs. Tiggly-Winkle by author Beatrix Potter is one of the stories written by Ms. Potter. Her stories are even better with illustrations. Sadly, the illustrations are missing in the 1905 version published for the Kindle and other tablets.

You will find her delightful writing making her book a good choice for bedtime stories. The Tale of Mrs. Tiggly-Winkle does mention some of the other characters found in Potter's books. You will find mention of Squirrel Nutkin, Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit in her charming story.

Recommend as a bedtime story for children of all ages.

I have loved and cherished Beatrix Potter since my very early ages. Books got to us handed down and through bazaars and church stands as we live in Brasil. I always remember having these little books in my house. That in 1960! So, yes, it is a must in any library. Kindle also!

Because this story is very old fashion, it was a wonderful opportunity for discussion about some of the strange words that were commonplace in the era in which the book was written. If you have a child who is interested in language and history, as well as the fanciful characters Miss Potter created, you will love dear Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.

Perfect Bedtime Story

The captivating characters and wonderful picture Potter created were enough to capture youngsters' imaginations; I appreciated the wondrous craftsmanship shown in these stories. They engaged without exciting - perfect for bedtime!

I put this on my Kindle so it would be there anytime I was around the wee ones. Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle was one of my (now grown) son's favorites of the Beatrix Potter series. The gentle creature character, personified in the simple bustle of life, is endearing. Her tales enable an imagination to soar.

Princess and Curdie

I loved the story but found the Christian symbolism heavy handed. I would recommend it for children and adults who don't mind propaganda.

An excellent story but a mediocre narration

Years ago I listened to a free version read by someone whose strong foreign accent made it hard to understand, so I thought that I would download the Audible version to really enjoy it. Unfortunately the narrator plods through it with all the enthusiasm of a computer-generated voice synthesizer. After trying hard to listen for nearly two hours, I finally gave up and turned it off. Listen to the story read by Ian Whitcomb or Frederick Davidson instead.

A good one when you're ready to start chapter books.

My boy is just 5 years old now, and about a year ago he was ready to move on from me reading picture books to him, to me reading chapter books to. That category of books, "first chapter books", isn't great. A lot of the proffered material is way way too mature for 4-year-olds. I was so glad to've stumbled upon Anne Fine's book, as well as the books of Joanna Hurwitz, both of which I thought were delightful and age-appropriate.

This story is gentle, non-violent, no serious villains to frighten preschoolers, and age-appropriate vocabulary.

Jamei and Angus

My daughter loves Jamie and Angus. She likes the drawings in the book as well as the cute stories. Her favorite is the one where Jamie and Angus have to go to the hospital for Jamie's stomach ache. While he is there he takes a little girl and her stuffed animal's last three chocolates that she was saving for when she got to go home. My daughter learned that it was wrong to steal from that story and every time I read it to her she tells me that Jamie and Angus are being bad. They are a tad long for bed time stories but I think the extra time is well worth a quality story.

Absolutely adorable set of stories.

So sweet! My daughter loved reading these at bedtime. The occasional English slang didn't throw her, and I think any small child with a 'lovey' could appreciate the adventures of Jamie and his best buddy Angus.

Love this book

A perfect bedtime book for a four or five-year-old. Jamie and his family members are so true to life, and the stories are engaging and funny. I'd love to find more simple books for my son--he doesn't need scary, irreverent or suspenseful--just good stories about a little boy with a little boy's emotions and concerns.
