    Spin a Yarn
One of my favorite fairy tales. Read it with lots of innosence in your voice for the poor Miller's daughter. And read her father as the "fool" he is, wanting to impress the king with his bragging. The role of the king is not developed here, except to say he is a very greedy man. The little man who saves the life of the future queen and is then foiled in his scheme to take her babe is drawn in a most delightful manner. He's more laughable than sinister. In the version I heard as a child he stomped his feet so hard and spun around so much in his anger that he augered himself in the ground. In this version he rides out of the window on a wooden kitchen spoon which was both humorous and pathetic. Zelinsky's art is wonderful and plentiful. Kids will love this picture book. Mine did.
    comic history
This gets 5 stars because of all the childhood memories it brings. When I was a child my father would buy me a Classics Illustrated comic book now and then. I LOVED them and read them over and over. I have thought of them often and never expected to ever lay eyes on them again..what a thrill to find the e comic on Amazon for $1.99..I bought my 2 favorites, (Rapunzel & Rumplestilskin)..because I purchased 2, I received a .99 "gift"..so both comics (containing all those priceless memories for me) were $3.00. If course comics have come so far, the illustrations in these comics are so rough. But the stories are there in a simple to understand language. I loved these as a child. They bring back a flood of memories and emotions for me now. Can't really be objective.
I loved this story when i was a kid
I loved this story when i was a kid, this exact one, with these illustrations. I got this to read to my kids, and it was so much fun watching them explore the pictures and listen to the story. Plus its a nice story that i feel teaches not to use people for ones selfish reasons.
    The illustrations are wonderful!
This is a well-known story that I grew up hearing. I love the illustrator's work in this book! His detail is amazing. I not only own this book, but have also given it as gifts.
A great read aloud book with beautiful illustrations
A great read aloud book with beautiful illustrations! My grandchildren loved this book when they were little. I bought it at Christmas for a bright little girl aged 5. I love the book myself! The illustrations are so gorgeous and detailed.

    Classics.
There's a lot of great stories within this book. It's nice reading the original 'darker' stories of some of my favorite children's tales. Great buy for a great price.
    Cautionary tales for all
reading these stories to my grand daughter brought back childhood memories of peaceful bedtime stories read to me and the lessons learned from them.
    Good

Peters adventures here take him beyond the boundaries of Mr McGregors garden all the way to Scotland, where he meets the gentle giant Finlay McBurney, a distant Scottish relative, and much entertainment ensues.
Emma Thompson, Oscar-winning actress and screen writer, is a long-time admirer of Beatrix Potters tales. She has a talent for creating engaging narratives with a dry humour similar to Potters own and is the perfect choice of author for this new Peter Rabbit tale, to be published 110 years after the original. Emma was inspired to set the tale in Scotland by her knowledge of Beatrix childhood holidays there.

This is not the full story!!!!
Would you try another book from Jan Berenstain and/or Lance Rubin?
Possibly, if the whole story was included.
Has The Berenstain Bears' New Pup turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
Why did I pay for a book that cuts out a third of the way through the story?? Buyers beware of books that are short (4 mins! Should be about 12!).

A mish mash of stuff, some ok, some terrible
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This is a bunch of old Xmas material put together hastily. In general the language is too complicated or quaint for children. There is even a sequence in church Latin. My children went from bored to confused. The songs are OK.
Would you ever listen to anything by Kim Mitzo Thompson again?
    No way
What aspect of Walt Wises performance would you have changed?
    The performance is quite good.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    The performance, the songs.

    Missing: Detective Partner!
Nate the Great is a detective and a guy known for being able to find lost things or solve mysteries. However, in NATE THE GREAT AND THE BIG SNIFF, Nate experiences his most personal mystery of all when Sludge, his dog, detective partner, and best friend, ends up lost in Weinman Brothers, Nate's favorite store. Since no dogs are allowed in the store, Nate has to leave Sludge outside. Nate goes inside to buy a gift for Sludge and has to stand in a really long line. Worried about his doggy partner, Nate goes back to the entrance to check on Sludge and finds that Sludge is gone!
Marjorie Weinman Sharmat is the author of over twenty Nate the Great adventures, including NATE THE GREAT STALKS STUPIDWEED, NATE THE GREAT AND THE BORING BEACH BAG, NATE THE GREAT AND THE HALLOWEEN HUNT, and NATE THE GREAT AND THE MUSHY VALENTINE. She has written dozens of books for young readers. She named Nate the Great after her father. Her books have been named as Children's Choice books and Junior Literary Guild selections, and been picked as Books of the Year by the Library of Congress.
NATE THE GREAT AND THE BIG SNIFF is written as a chapter book, something the last few books in the series have changed to. The change is welcome because the chapters provide brief bits that can be read while on the go, and they all end up with cliffhanger endings that make the young reader want to pick the book up again or the young listener want to sit down and hear more. As always, the author presents a very real mystery with very real possible solutions before ultimately solving Nate's latest case. The usual cast of Annie and Fang and Rosamond show up in the story, and Claude puts in an appearance to round out the neighborhood. The way that all of the group bands together to help Nate find Sludge is really great and heart-warming. Over the years, Nate has been bothered by these people, or presented hard mysteries by them, and it's good to see that they help him out when he needs it, and that they actually care about Sludge. When the case is finally solved, Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Mitchell Sharmat reveal that Sludge is every bit the detective that Nate is. The full color illustrations by Martha Weston are detailed and expressive.
