Best Ever Ella Book for K-5
I am an elementary school music teacher, and I purchased this book as part of a lesson on Ella Fitzgerald. It's a little long for the little ones, but we can make it through. The upper grades love all the facts about Ella that are found in the book, and I love the "Scat Cat Monroe" narrator. This is a wonderful book to educate children about Ella. And EVERYONE needs to know about her!
Gorgeous tribute to an amazing legend
This book, in both words and illustrations, is utterly gorgeous. It builds a beautiful, and accurate, picture of the life of one of the greatest jazz legends. Highly recommend this to all ages.
I don't know how kids would take to this book ...
I don't know how kids would take to this book but I'm sure it could turn a lot of adults on the Ella's singing.
    Not an adult book
a picture book for kids. Not what I expected.
    Ella Fitzgerald
I could not help but leave the review for last on this one. When a classy cat is the narrator, you know it's going to be a good book. As classy as Ella Fitzgerald was, are the binding, paper illustrations, and status of this book. Written much differently from the rest of the books available. I am usually turned away from Ebonics, street slang, and rhyming everything. Surprisingly, I was able to follow along almost rhythmic. I love the "Scat Cat Monroe" narrator. "You may think I look like any other cat. But baby, I'm in a class all by myself. Scat Cat's my name. Scat Cat Monroe. A name I've earned. Got my name from knowin' Ella. Ella Fitzgerald. The Queen of Scat. What's scat? you ask. Scat's the sound that don't hold back. Ella's sound-that was scat. Singing so supreme. Music's velvet-ribbon dream..." An iconic woman doesn't need a cat to tell her story but we need something to get kids engaged since this is about music way before their era. It was a great book to jive with. Beautiful pictures and a nice history lesson on this wonderful woman! Highly recommend this to all ages.

    Great Bedtime Reader
All of the Illustrated Chosen Classics are great bedtime readers. My wife sits in the hall of the children's bedrooms and reads these stories to them at bedtime. The difference between these books and the traditional novels is that these stories move very fast. My son, in particular, will hear one of these abridged classic novels and, if he likes it, will then read the full unabridged version on his own. Kind of gives our kids a taste of the classics without having to start reading a really large and sometimes overwhelming looking book. My son is 10 and my daughter is 15. We have about 30 of these types of books in our library.
    A Classic Still
Like many people of my age (62), I read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a child because at that time it was widely perceived to be a child's or young adult's book. This is unfortunate as it is not nor has it ever been directed at the young. In my rereading I discovered for the first time why it is still called the original great American novel. Huckleberry, like Twain, is opinionated and perceptive. His narration and point of view drive the novel forward. Rather than relegate this work to the children's shelves or castigate it as racist, folks should embrace this novel for what it is, a bildungsroman that shows the growth of a country as well as the growth of its young protagonist.
It captivated a classroom full of surly teens
I teach English, and the junior year in North Carolina is devoted to American literature. I approached Huck Finn with no small amount of trepidation because of Twain's use of vernacular. I ran into the same problem with "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and solved that by listening to Ruby Dee's audio recording, which students loved. I purchased this recording of Huck Finn, and it was to die for fabulous. Students read along in their books as we listened to the recording, and it helped bring the characters and the story alive for them. They laughed when I hoped they would laugh, and they understood the novel so much better by being able to listen to it. This recording was invaluable.
Reading this book as an adult is a whole different ...
Reading this book as an adult is a whole different experience. I'm fairly sure the versions I read as a child were watered down. I don't have any memory of murder and mayhem in the versions I read as a child. All the same it was highly entertaining and deserving of being a classic.
    Friendship and mischieviousness.
I grew up reading this book, a story about Huckleberry Finn and his adventurous life on the Mississippi River as a boy. He would be considered a hoodlum in this day and age, at the time it was written he was an orphan and had no one to help him grow with morals however he is a rather a good boy with pretty good morals and this story is a classic. The story is also about friendship.

was a gift for an 8 year old girl.
My niece received this book from me for her 8th birthday. She is now 9 and has told me she never finished the book. "it was good" she said but you reads a lot and if she didn't finish it than it wasn't that engaging. Maybe a boy would enjoy it more.
    I like EllRay
Great book for children. Came quickly, grandson loves it.

    Fun and Light!
If you could sum up The Knighting of Sir Kaye in three words, what would they be?
    Fun and Light!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Knighting of Sir Kaye?
My 5-year old son: "The tournament because real knights always do it".
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
My son: "I really liked when the princess dubbed Sir Kaye."
    Any additional comments?
My 5 year old son and I listened to this story together. We enoyed it and it gave us things to talk about. He's a little obsessed with knights right now, so the topic is perfect. It gave me an opportunity to talk about how not all knights were "good guys". It was a good book for the two of us to listen to and enjoy together and we can't wait for the next book in what will hopefully be a long, successful series.
FINALLY!! A GOOD book for BOYS!
Where does The Knighting of Sir Kaye rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I don't usually listen to audio books, but this one was a life-saver! Right after purchasing, my kids came down with the flu...we sat and listened together on the edge of our seats! They absolutely loved it, as did I, and they've already started listening to it again!
What did you like best about this story?
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the fact that this was a fun (and wholesome) story that was TOTALLY age appropriate for my 9-year-old son, but was still completely enjoyed by my 8-year-old daughter as well! As a mother, I loved that the hero (Sir Kaye) has no "super-powers" or magic, but depends totally on his intelligence, strength of character, and a strange talent (don't want to kill any surprises!) to defeat the kingdom's villains.
    Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite scene was the rescue of Prince "Bo" from the bunglers and the last day of the tournament.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was particularly moved by two scenes: 1. When Sir Kaye was competing in the tournament against his main adversary and he made the decision to rescue Melcor's squire, knowing that it may cost him the victory. 2. When he chose to rescue the same person that had bullied him, "because it was the right thing to do."
    Any additional comments?
I so appreciate someone who has finally written a book that appeals to a boy's sense of honor and "manhood" in such a positive way. This book has values and moral lessons intertwined with humor and adventure that are so refreshingly age appropriate. We (me and my kids) cannot wait for the next book, and we hope that there are many more! Thanks, Mr.

    Release date: 11-21-13
    Publisher: Box Of Light
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 5-7
    Publisher's Summary:
Five favorite fables, retold by veteran storyteller Rand Whipple. These versions of Aesop's stories have a modern twist and a unique sense of humor. Includes "The Milkmaid and her Pail", "The Wind and the Sun", "The Crab and its Mother", "The Monkey and its Shadow", and "The Fox and the Crow".
    Members Reviews:
    Love this narrator.
Where does Aesop's Fables rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Our children listen to audio books while we travel and they really liked this book. This is a good addition to our collection. We especially think the narrator does a good job telling the stories.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Aesop's Fables?
Our kids liked the milkmaid who keeps getting her words wrong.
Have you listened to any of Rand Whipples other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, I bought this book because we had listened to Jack, The Beanstalk and Other Stories on a trip. We were surprised because the narrator sounds southern in that book but isn't in this one. Both books made us laugh. They were different but both fun.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. We wished there were more stories to listen to since we were traveling.
    Any additional comments?
The author (who is also the narrator) does a good job of expanding the fables into full stories. Each one lasts a few minutes. He also gives the stories a sense of humor that adults enjoy. We liked listening to both of his books as a family.
    :(
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Not really sure who would enjoy it more...
What was most disappointing about Rand Whipples story?
We were just really disappointed by the modern twist. In reflection we want our children to learn the classics - as classics, as opposed to having a modern twist.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Aesop's Fables?
    Anything related to modern times...
    Any additional comments?
Rand has a great voice and I am certain he would captivate our children's attention, just wish it was true to original content.

    Misprint
I love this book, and I used it as a mentor text when I taught my Greek Mythology unit. However, the particular copy that I received from this order included doubles of the first 5 pages. It was quite odd. I will attach a picture once I get back in my classroom when the school year starts and back to the book, but, for example, the order of the pages was as follows: 1, 2, 1, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 5, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.... Very odd misprint. We still enjoyed the book, and I made a little joke out of it, and my students got a giggle out of it. But odd!
    Greek God Fun!
This marvellous introduction to Greek mythology is now a family favourite at my place! It is short, playful, beautifully illustrated, and covers all the important points about where Zeus came from in myth. My kids learned a lot, and so did my husband :D There's no dryness to this approach to myths. This is great fun.
Young Zeus stands up for himself and his family and benefits from the help of his Mother, his Nanny, the fairy-goat Amalthea, his Grandmother Gaia (the Earth) and his siblings. It has a happy ending: Zeus is the responsible, kind one and therefore ends up in charge.
I also can't get enough of the illustrations!
A great picture book for school-aged youngsters that everyone will love reading over and over.
    GREAT Book!
Just a marvelous retelling of the myth for youngsters! Bought it for my 4 1/2 year old grandson, and he liked it a lot. As a doctorate in mythology I read it before sending it and was highly impressed. The author-illustrator includes all the important points for kids without the explicit, sometimes unsavory details. Charming illustrations, as well.
    Great Greek Mythology Book
My students LOVE this book. It is such a fun book to read with students, especially if they are learning about the Greeks or Greek mythology. It makes Greek mythology come to life, and the pictures are great!
    I want more like this!!!
A regular in our bedtime story rotation. Definitely a favorite in this household! We love Greek mythology and it's one of the few books we've found that's right for the younger crowd. It also has a pronunciation guide in case you're unfamiliar with the names.

    Title: The World Made New
Subtitle: Why the Age of Exploration Happened and How It Changed the World
Author: Marc Aronson, John W. Glenn
    Narrator: Jonathan Hogan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-08-13
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 1 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 5-7
    Publisher's Summary:
Imagine your shock at waking up one morning to a fleet of enormous, otherworldly craft looming over you. And when bizarre aliens begin to emerge - speaking strange gibberish - your heart races even faster. Similar fears may have gripped New World inhabitants when diverse civilizations - separated by a vast ocean - first met. American natives once knew nothing of towering ships, galloping horses, thundering guns, or smallpox. From 1492 onward, however, waves of adventurers would give them a cruel introduction. And yet, ultimately, New World dwellers - together with their Old World counterparts - would become transformed by these global connections. Historian and author Marc Aronson - a Library Journal Best Book honoree and a Robert F. Sibert Award winner for excellence in nonfiction - teams up with John W. Glenn to give kids and their parents a fresh perspective on New World exploration.
    Critic Reviews:
"Add this to Aronsons growing body of fine historical works that are changing how young readers think about history." (Kirkus Reviews)
"This splendid, exciting...account of the Age of Exploration relates events so dramatic that they would have been dismissed as implausible fiction if they hadnt actually happened. Dont think of this as 'just' a book for kids: childrens parents will find it equally gripping and informative." (Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize-winning UCLA professor)

    Five Stars
    Thanks
    Great Book!
In our Social Studies curriculum we talk about exporers and how they came to the New World. We talk about the Columbian Exchange where the old and new worlds share their products culture! The kids loved this book!
The gloal turning point in world history.
The age of exploration of the western world affected every one on earth. In 1491 no one in Italy had seen a tomato and there was not a potato in Ireland. In a few years trade routes develop around the world. Cows and pigs were brought to the Americas and turkeys and pumpkins were brought to Europe. The Aztecs gave the old world chocolate. Sir Francis Drake started as a pirate. Balboa was the first European to see the Pacific, but was killed by a rival. Emigration from country to country was widespread. Some found gold and some starved.
I would highly recommend this to students in grades 5-8
As a teacher of The Age of Exploration, I would highly recommend this to students in grades 5-8. It covers the key players and events, as well as the causes and consequences (indigenous impact). I've read several informational texts on the subject, that target middle grade students: Before Columbus, The Maestras beautifully illustrated series, etc. For my money, The World Made New has exactly what I've been searching for. Ideas from Crosby, Mann, Diamond and others are all present.
    Simply brilliant
Develops the Age of Exploration through the famous Europeans, plus Leif Erickson (briefly) and Zheng He (VERY briefly). Presents the problem with Venetian-Muslim control of the spice and silk route and explains (briefly) the Reconquista, which freed up adventurous European armies to go a-conquering New Worlds.
Presents migration and culture contact, and in a thoughtful way shows the negative results as well as the positive -- for the Europeans as well as the people they encountered/enslaved.
