Love this author! Pastries and Plaster in Paris!

As always, David Lebowitz is so funny and self-deprecating, it's easy to miss what a fundamentally gifted writer he is. I loved the etymology of companion. Having been through a large home construction project, I know that it's incredibly difficult to retell your building woes with any sense of humor. This is an entertaining but also informative book that should be a must-read for anyone remodeling anywhere, not just France. Plus, there's a very satisfying recipe at the end of almost chapter. This would make a great movie--Mr. Blanding's Builds His Dream House meets a pastry chef in Paris.

Would you listen to L'Appart again? Why?

just know....you are going to wind up buying the book! this was such a fun listen that I wanted to just make every recipe in the book...so...I'm buying the book to have. on my way home from work today I picked up the ingredients for three of the recipies and two pot de creme...because they were there and I was there...and they are French! david also cured me of any fantasy I might have had about wanting to live in Paris...I'll just continue to visit. my only issue with the book is the narration. it's perfectly fine...but it would have been so much better if david had done his own narration. I think a lot of the humor is lost in the straight forward telling of graham halstead, pun intended. david lebovitz, like david sedaris, has a voice that is full of sly wit...and that is missing.

Fun book

I enjoyed seeing genealogy through his eyes. Listening to this book was a lot of fun.

Humorous, honest and upbeat

Humorous tale of a one year journey to break the Guinness World Record for a family reunion. I enjoyed the continual return to a concept that if we are all ultimately related, then why should we be so devicive? A true answer.

The book did get a bit long, as so often is the case. At times I felt manipulated that the grand scheme of this project was really to write a book and sell. Of course i then bought it. But I am not sure that fact was ever hidden. Humor usually pulled me out of feeling too taken on a ride as the author's latest con to sell a book. Clearly he took each step and the journey was honest and filled with tales.

I am almost always a fan of the author reading his own book. I love the proper punch and pause of an author's own narration. This was not one of those times. Ever have a face not match a voice? Or a picture not match a profile? This was a narrator not matching the script. As odd as that must sound. It threw me chapter after chapter.

Hilarious, Honest, and Heartfelt

As if being able to listen to this book wasnt great enough, having the author read it gave that extra feeling that I was on this journey with him and his family. Incredibly relatable for anyone that has a passion for genealogy and their own family history. I found myself laughing while thinking I have felt many of those thoughts throughout my research as well. I wouldnt be surprised if this book became the gateway of many others acquiring a new found love for genealogy. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has any level of interest in genealogy but it is also far reaching in appeal past that.

Sincere and deeply moving

An amazing story of Mr. Kahns life and the story of his familys path from Pakistan to modern America. Full of wisdom and lessons in sacrifice and service. It brought me to tears several times.

A book that can give you hope in a negative world

This book is written and read with such dignity and respect for one's fellow man, I wish it was mandatory reading in all schools. Khizr Kahn makes us think about how fortunate we are to be in the USA and have our Constitution. He reminds us of the beauty of appreciation of people and country. He also inspires us to think what we are in the process of destroying in this current Administration. It is a frightening time in the USA. We have increased our violence and greed but here is a man who gives us hope and reason. I found the book to be inspiring.

Great baseball story

This is both a great baseball story and a great memoir. There are few parts hard to get through (although if you aren't a Giants, Cubs, or Dodgers fan there might be). Colletti has interesting anecdotes that will pique the interest of baseball lovers and entertain the casual fan.

Good Story, But narrator is the wrong guy

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I've been reading Caleb's blog for years and the best thing about his writing is his honest and true voice. Like your college buddy telling you what it's really like in his job. All the inside jokes, backstage humor and the real thoughts that go through his head. I have seen Caleb's pictures and watched his TED Talk. He's a regular guy. And this book is a very accurate picture of his life. It's a good story.

Then Why Oh Why does the producer of the audio book have to choose some low baritone slow talker for a narrator. That is not Caleb's voice. It's soooo stereotypical of the entertainment field to think that funeral people all talk in low, slow, hushed tones. We don't. We tell jokes and laugh and have fun just like everyone else. A younger, regular sounding narrator would have made the book so much better.

Absolutely wonderful

Down to earth and from personal experience, Caleb shares what he has gone through, which in turn helps future Funeral Directors get a glimpse of some of exactly what Death Care entails. Very good book.

Must read for any working woman (or working man!)

What did you love best about Reset?

Ellen Pao courageously spoke the truth. She took on venture capitalists with unlimited resources to tell all about a seriously broken industry and work culture. Ellen did everything she could think of to be successful (including making Kleiner millions) and it still wasn't enough.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ellen of course! I am so thankful that someone finally wrote about these issues. Women have been "leaning in" for decades, and we are losing ground. She is right, there needs to be a reset. As she recounts the abuse she suffered, the pointless hurdles she jumped, she realized, despite her pedigreed background and endless striving, that she was in an unwinnable game. Her courageous act of telling her story might change this. I hope it does!

Which character as performed by Emily Woo Zeller was your favorite?

As an audible addict, I definitely think Emily is one of the top 5 narrators in the game. She is great and she has the perfect voice to give life to Ellen's prose.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were too many to list. Because so many of the situations made me feel like saying "me too." I am not alone.

Any additional comments?

Ellen --- you should compile a follow up to Reset of the letters you received from people. All their stories.... like how after Liz Gilbert wrote Eat, Pray Love, she compiled a book of her fans entitled "Eat, Pray Love Made Me Do It."

Insightful

I first heard about Ellen Pao when our local paper covered her lawsuit against her employer Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers for gender discrimination. It was no surprise that she lost the case.

This book primarily discusses her case of gender inequality in the science and business world. Pao has her degree in engineering from Princeton, a law degree from Harvard and an MBA from Harvard. Pao describes the problem women have in male-dominated fields. She says ambitious women are seen as aggressive. I have found this is a common theme in many books about gender inequality. As a female scientist I also have been subjected to many of the various tactics described in the book. I am much older than Pao so what we faced in many ways was far worse than she encountered. I remember in high school having to fight the school administration to be allowed into science classes. Then I was the only female in the class.

Pao tells of her life as a child in Maplewood, New Jersey growing up in a high-achieving Chinese immigrant family. She tells of her education and life in the business world. She also describes the treatment she received from men during and after her lawsuit. The last part of the book is about the work she is doing and the organization she has started to create diversity in the tech industry.

The book is well written.
