    Title: Coming to My Senses
Subtitle: The Making of a Counterculture Cook
    Author: Alice Waters
    Narrator: Alice Waters
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-05-17
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 100 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The long-awaited memoir from cultural icon and culinary standard bearer Alice Waters recalls the circuitous road and tumultuous times leading to the opening of what is arguably America's most influential restaurant.
When Alice Waters opened the doors of her "little French restaurant" in Berkeley, California, in 1971 at the age of 27, no one ever anticipated the indelible mark it would leave on the culinary landscape - Alice least of all. Fueled in equal parts by naiveté and a relentless pursuit of beauty and pure flavor, she turned her passion project into an iconic institution that redefined American cuisine for generations of chefs and food lovers.
In Coming to My Senses, Alice retraces the events that led her to 1517 Shattuck Avenue and the tumultuous times that emboldened her to find her own voice as a cook when the prevailing food culture was embracing convenience and uniformity. Moving from a repressive suburban upbringing to Berkeley in 1964 at the height of the free speech movement and campus unrest, she was drawn into a bohemian circle of charismatic figures whose views on design, politics, film, and food would ultimately inform the unique culture on which Chez Panisse was founded.
Dotted with stories, recipes, and letters, Coming to My Senses is at once deeply personal and modestly understated, a quietly revealing look at one woman's evolution from a rebellious yet impressionable follower to a respected activist who effects social and political change on a global level through the common bond of food.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Waters] does an artful job of showing how even the most apparently unrelated experiences helped lead her to her profession. She is also quite frank about her failures; her relationships with lovers, friends, and colleagues; and her pride in remaining a part of the 1960's counterculture that nourished her. An almost charmed restaurant life that exhales the sweet aromas of honesty and self-awareness." (

    Good story!
I real y liked how show is able to transport you to his past and how her story is unconventional.
    Disappointing
I had a high level of interest to listen to Ms. Waters book and must say I was disappointed. I was hoping for more depth on how she built her place in the history of American cuisine and what I heard was mostly pretentiousness with the exception of a little self-deprecation as she told the story of Chef Paul Prudhomme (a true giant in American cuisine) and his team bailing her out at an event. An ongoing retelling of insubstantial stories filled with name-dropping foreign filmmakers shes met and the steady line of men from whom she adopted a point of view because she seemed to have none of her own over the years. Even her stated hatred of fast food provided little backup for her point of view and how shed propose the world should behave differently. I suppose all of this is what it is. After all, it is HER life story to tell.

    Title: Happiness: A Memoir
Subtitle: The Crooked Little Road to Semi-Ever After
    Author: Heather Harpham
    Narrator: Heather Harpham
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-01-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 377 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A shirt-grabbing love story that follows a one-of-a-kind family through twists of fate that require nearly unimaginable choices.
Happiness begins with a charming courtship between hopelessly attracted opposites: Heather, a world-roaming California girl, and Brian, an intellectual, homebody writer, kind and slyly funny but loath to leave his Upper West Side studio. Their magical interlude ends, full stop, when Heather becomes pregnant - Brian is sure he loves her, only he doesn't want kids. Heather returns to California to deliver their daughter alone, buoyed by family and friends. Mere hours after Gracie's arrival, Heather's bliss is interrupted when a nurse wakes her: "Get dressed. Your baby is in trouble."
This is not how Heather had imagined new motherhood - alone, heartsick, an unexpectedly solo caretaker of a baby who smelled "like sliced apples and salted pretzels" but might be perilously ill. Brian reappears as Gracie's condition grows dire; together, Heather and Brian have to decide what they are willing to risk to ensure their girl sees adulthood.
The grace and humor that ripple through Harpham's writing transform the dross of heartbreak and parental fears into a clear-eyed, warm-hearted view of the world. Profoundly moving and subtly written, Happiness radiates in many directions - new, romantic love; gratitude for a beautiful, inscrutable world; deep, abiding friendship; the passion a parent has for a child; and the many unlikely ways to build a family. Ultimately, it's a story about love and happiness in their many crooked configurations.

Like Being At A Riveting One-Woman Show
As a motherless non-mother, I didnt expect to identify this much with a memoir about raising a sick child, about the impossible choices parenting requires, about having to hold fear and hope in the same hand. But the writing is so blazingly good, true, and precise, that sentence after sentence had me nodding with recognition: Yes, I know this exactly. Heather Harpham is a writer of such ability and intelligence that her struggle becomes your struggle; her revelation about the true state of happiness becomes your revelation. Hearing it in her own voice only makes that connection more personal.
Loved and hated that the story ended...
This author, in my book, (no pun intended) has one of the most forgiving hearts. I admire that immensely! That she totally owns her shortcomings in every facet of her life is something most of us never even think of. Not without years of therapy anyway.
The delivery in words and tone made this journey very easy to hear, as painful as it was. I found myself avoiding germs and then catching myself. My heart felt like boiled mash at times. I celebrated out loud during the joyful parts. I cried silent, ugly tears over losses.
This book is for anyone, especially parents or loved ones, experiencing a long battle with severely ill children. Or for anyone like me-who loves a story told by a narrator who can deliver such a moving story in a gentle, but matter-of-fact manner.
I loved the story so much that I hated for it to end. I'm hoping there will be a sequel of everyday experiences about this family.
    Could not stop listening!
I LOVED this story. It is real, heartbreaking, heartwarming and so open with all the conflicting emotions we all have around parenting and relationships.

    Title: Carrier Pilot
    Author: Norman Hanson
    Narrator: Chris MacDonnell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-20-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 45 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1942, Norman Hanson learned to fly the Royal Navy's newest fighter: the US-built Chance Vought Corsair. Fast, rugged, and demanding to fly, it was an intimidating machine. But in the hands of its young Fleet Air Arm pilots, it also proved to be a lethal weapon.
Posted to the South Pacific aboard HMS Illustrious, Hanson and his squadron took the fight to the Japanese. Facing a desperate and determined enemy, Kamikaze attacks, and the ever-present dangers of flying off a pitching carrier deck, death was never far away.
Brought to life in vivid, visceral detail, Carrier Pilot is one of the finest aviators' memoirs of the war; an awe-inspiring, thrilling, sometimes terrifying, account of war in the air.
    Members Reviews:
    Absorbing
This memoir is about a pilot aboard the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious. Hanson was a squadron commander. Hanson tells about his time in boot camp and in pilot training. He then describes life on the carrier, HMS Illustrious. Hanson describes in detail the actions he fought on HMS Illustrious in the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
Lieutenant Commander Normal Hanson was born in 1914 in the village of Keighley, Yorkshire. He served in the Royal Navy from 1941 to 1946. He fought in the Pacific and took part in the Palembary refineries attack and in the Sakishima Islands.
The book is well written and almost reads like a novel. The book was originally published in 1979. It is one of the few memoires about the British Navy in the Pacific.
The book is almost thirteen hours. Chris MacDonnell does a good job narrating the story. MacDonnell is an English actor and audiobook narrator. He grew up in the acting world as both his parents worked for British film director David Lean.
Interesting account of little covered piece of WW2
At least here in the US, we don't hear much about the British navy in the Pacific in WW2, and even less about British naval pilots. Hanson does a nice job of recounting his experiences as one of those pilots. There was a lot to learn here, especially for aviation buffs as the author covers his flight training in Florida, his time serving in Egypt and, eventually, his work flying Corsairs from carriers in the Pacific. He mourns the close friends he lost but also, at times, gives very detailed accounts of things like the experience of flying a corsair and the experience of escaping one that had crashed and was sinking. He also, at times, demonstrates a wonderfully dry sense of humor.
I definitely recommend this book if you're interested in military aviation, WW2 naval aviation, Corsairs, or the experience of being a British naval pilot.
    Gr8 pick
Really enjoyed this book! A very interesting and informative story about a carrier pilot. If you're not familiar with a British accent it can be difficult to understand but it also makes it feel authentic
    excellent book
very well written account of a British Corsair pilot during World War II from his perspective.

    Publisher's Summary:
A former Delta Force black ops member takes us inside America's covert drone war in this headline-making, never-before-told account for fans of Zero Dark Thirty and Lone Survivor, told by a Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal writer and filled with eye-opening and sure to be controversial details.
For nearly a decade, Brett Velicovich was at the center of America's new warfare: using unmanned aerial vehicles - drones - to take down the world's deadliest terrorists across the globe. One of an elite handful in the entire military with the authority to select targets and issue death orders, he worked in concert with the full human and technological network of American intelligence - assets, analysts, spies, informants - and the military's elite operatives to stalk, capture, and eliminate high-value targets in al-Qaeda and ISIS.
In this remarkable book, cowritten with journalist Christopher S. Stewart, Velicovich offers unprecedented perspective on the remarkably complex nature of drone operations and the rigorous and wrenching decisions behind them. In intimate, gripping detail, he shares action-packed insider stories of the most coordinated, advanced, and secret missions that neutralized terrorists, preserved the lives of US and international warriors across the globe, and saved countless innocents in the hottest conflict zones today.
Drone Warrior also chronicles the US military's evolution in the past decade and the technology driving it. Velicovich considers the future it foretells and speaks candidly on the physical and psychological toll it exacts, including the impact on his own life. He reminds us that while these machines can kill, they can also be used productively to improve and preserve life, including protecting endangered species, work he is engaged in today.
Joining warfare classics such as American Sniper, Lone Survivor, and No Easy Day, Drone Warrior is the definitive account of our nation's capacity and capability for war in the modern age.

    So Few Protecting the Many!
This book reports on the use of drones as a tool against bad people and the price paid by the few that fight to protect the majority. It is informative and a must read to learn about the smart well trained and dedicated modern warrior.
Excellent book, kept me engaged the whole time.
Thank you for your service and dedication. my family praise for the men and women that serve for our country, I've taught my son's the importance of our freedom...
If You Like War Stories, You'll Enjoy This Book.
If you are familiar with most books in this category you will know that a majority of them are written by the special operators themselves, however, this book gives an entirely new and (very) interesting perspective as it sheds light on the drone/intel side of the war on terror. This book helps the reader/listener get a better idea of what drones do and how drone strikes are conducted. While the author isn't in "direct action," that doesn't mean there aren't just as many interesting and exciting stories in the book. I also thought the narrator did an excellent job.
Bottom Line - if you enjoy books in this category, you will enjoy this book
    For the better good!
Great insight into a world that we were never told about.

    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author and cultural critic Chuck Klosterman presents a unique audio companion for Chuck Klosterman X, in which he contextualizes and reads from the collection of his best articles and essays, providing both a fascinating tour of the past decade and an ideal introduction to the mind of one of the sharpest and most prolific observers of our unusual times.
Klosterman has created an incomparable body of work in books, magazines, and newspapers and on the Web. Buyer Beware
Would you try another book from Chuck Klosterman and/or Chuck Klosterman?
    Yes.
What was most disappointing about Chuck Klostermans story?
The actual collected pieces were not contained in the audio program.
What three words best describe Chuck Klostermans performance?
    Personable and fun.
What character would you cut from Chuck Klosterman X?
    Not applicable.
    Any additional comments?
Despite the Unabridged tag, which might be technically correct for a companion offering, and the Publisher's Summary which better describes the print version, the audio program is not the narration of Chuck Klosterman's newest collection Chuck Klosterman X. It is what the author himself describes as a sort of Directory's Commentary, a companion to the collection. The Audible offering does not contain the reading of the actual collected pieces by Klosterman. It is the author narrating the introductions to each of his writings.
While I did find the recording fascinating as the vignettes describe the genesis of, story behind, or his impressions on his articles, and Klosterman's narration is always a treat, buyers expecting an audio version of the print edition will be disappointed. At $21 for 3 hours of abridged content, most will probably be more satisfied heading straight to the print edition which contains both the introductions and, you know, the actual pieces that Klosterman discusses.
Audible has always been very upfront and honest about the content in their offerings, so I am sure this is an oversight that will be corrected soon.

    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 227 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
An endearing coming-of-age memoir by a young woman who spent 13 years as Jackie Kennedy's personal assistant and occasional nanny - and the lessons about life and love she learned from the glamorous first lady.
In 1964 Kathy McKeon was just 19 years old and newly arrived from Ireland when she was hired as the personal assistant to former first lady Jackie Kennedy. The next 13 years of her life were spent in Jackie's service, during which Kathy not only played a crucial role in raising young Caroline and John Jr. but also had a front-row seat to some of the 20th century's most significant events.
Because Kathy was always at Jackie's side, Rose Kennedy deemed her "Jackie's girl". And although Kathy called Jackie "Madam", she considered her employer more like a big sister who, in many ways, mentored her on how to be a lady. Kathy was there during Jackie and Aristotle Onassis' courtship and marriage and Robert Kennedy's assassination, dutifully supporting Jackie and the children during these tumultuous times in history.
A rare and engrossing look at the private life of one of the most famous women of the 20th century, Jackie's Girl is also a moving personal story of a young woman finding her identity and footing in a new country, with the help of the most elegant woman in America.

    Jackie's Girl -- A refreshing inside perspective
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would absolutely recommend this book. It is an honest, touching & even humorous account of Jackie's personal assistant, a young Irish girl who steps into this role one year following the death of President Kennedy. She does not however, bash Jackie or the Kennedy family.
Which character as performed by Aedin Moloney was your favorite?
The narrator makes the story come to life with her own thick Irish accent.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The story takes you from the year following the death of Jackie's husband, President Kennedy, to the marriage then death of her second husband, Onasis, to the untimely death of Jackie, and then to the tragic death of John Kennedy, Jackie's son.

    Publisher's Summary:
The extraordinary real-life adventure of three brothers at the center of the most dramatic turning points of World War II and their mad race to change history - and save one of their own.
They are three brothers, all navy men, who end up coincidentally and extraordinarily at the epicenter of three of the war's most crucial moments. Bill is picked by Roosevelt to run his first map room in Washington. Benny is the gunnery and antiaircraft officer on the USS Enterprise, one of the only carriers to escape Pearl Harbor and by the end of 1942 the last one left in the Pacific to defend against the Japanese. Barton, the youngest and least distinguished of the three, is shuffled off to the Navy Supply Corps because his mother wants him out of harm's way. But this protection plan backfires when Barton is sent to the Philippines and listed as missing in action after a Japanese attack. Now it is up to Bill and Benny to find and rescue him.
Based on 10 years of research drawn from archives around the world, interviews with fellow shipmates and POWs, and primary sources including diaries, unpublished memoirs, and letters half forgotten in basements, The Jersey Brothers is a remarkable story of agony and triumph - from the home front to Roosevelt's White House and Pearl Harbor to Midway and Bataan. It is the story, written with intimate, novelistic detail, of an ordinary young man who shows extraordinary courage as the Japanese do everything short of killing him. And it is, above all, a story of brotherly love: of three men finding their loyalty to each other tested under the tortures of war - and knowing that their success or failure to save their youngest brother will shape their family forever.

Band of Brothers Meets Unbroken-a Remarkable Book
This is one of the most amazing stories I have ever read, rendered all the more amazing because it is pure fact, not fiction. Anyone who has any interest in the WWII action in the Pacific theater must put this on his/her reading list. As others have noted, it has echoes of "Unbroken", but not only does it cover the territory (and confirm) that book's recounting of the unspeakable horrors suffered by prisoners of war at the hands of the Japanese, it covers so many other aspects of the war in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor to Bataan and the Philippines to the great land and sea battles including Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Leyte Gulf, the Coral Sea - all told from first hand accounts of the three brothers who were there and who could comment not only on the battles but on the commanders who ran them - MacArthur, Halsey, Nimitz, Turner and others. In addition, one of the brothers - the father of the author by the way - witnessed the early years of the war from the inner circle of the White House. He ran (actually, created) FDR's vaunted strategic "map room" and there interacted daily with the president and his war staff (as well as first lady Eleanor) before he, too, shipped out to join the war at sea. To have these three brothers all as first-hand witnesses to some of the major events of the war is itself astounding, and as you would expect, leads to some equally amazing - and heart-wrenching - tales from their home front, focusing on their indomitable mother, Helen.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
One woman's remarkable odyssey from tragedy to prison to recovery - and recognition as a leading figure in the national justice reform movement.
Susan Burton's world changed in an instant when her five-year-old son was killed by a van driving down their street. Consumed by grief and without access to professional help, Susan self-medicated, becoming addicted first to cocaine then to crack. As a resident of South Los Angeles, a black community under siege in the War on Drugs, it was but a matter of time before Susan was arrested. She cycled in and out of prison for over 15 years; never was she offered therapy or treatment for addiction. On her own, she eventually found a private drug rehabilitation facility.
Once clean, Susan dedicated her life to supporting women facing similar struggles. Her organization, A New Way of Life, operates five safe homes in Los Angeles that supply a lifeline to hundreds of formerly incarcerated women and their children - setting them on the track to education and employment rather than returning to prison. Becoming Ms. Burton not only humanizes the deleterious impact of mass incarceration, it also points the way to the kind of structural and policy changes that will offer formerly incarcerated people the possibility of lives of meaning and dignity.
    Members Reviews:
    Compelling
This is the story of Burtons life. The co-author is journalist and writer Cari Lynn. The first part of the book is about Burtons early years in which she suffered from emotional neglect and sexual abuse. After Burtons five-year-old son was killed by an automobile, she became a drug addict. This began years of being in and out of prison.
The second half of the book reveals her path to recovery. She formed a nonprofit organization entitled A New Way of Life Reentry Project. This organization helps other women stay out of prison and re-enter society. Burton has won many awards for her work and the Los Angeles Times named her one of the Nations New Civil Rights Leaders. She advocated for a more humane justice system guided by compassion and dignity.
The book is well written and easy to read. Along with her life story, Burton also examines a number of issues in a broader context such as: How the lack of employment and housing opportunities increase the odds of a person returning to prison. She writes about ways to change these societal issues. Burton also provides statistics to reveal a fuller perspective of the problems of the prison system. Ms. Burtons book not only inspires but educates.
The book is ten and a half hours long. Janina Edwards does a good job narrating the book. Edwards is a voice over artist and audiobook narrator.

"Thank you to Sheila Nevins for putting all this down for posterity. Women need this kind of honest excavation of the process of living." - Meryl Streep
An astonishingly frank, funny, poignant audiobook for any woman who wishes they had someone who would say to them, "This happened to me, learn from my mistakes and my successes. Because you don't get smarter as you get older, you get braver."
Sheila Nevins is the best friend you never knew you had. She is your discreet confidante you can tell any secret to, your sage mentor at work who helps you navigate the often uneven playing field, your wise sister who has "been there, done that," your hysterical girlfriend whose stories about men will make you laugh until you cry. Sheila Nevins is the one person who always tells it like it is.
In You Don't Look Your Age, the famed documentary producer (as President of HBO Documentary Films for over 30 years, Nevins has rightfully been credited with creating the documentary rebirth) finally steps out from behind the camera and takes her place front and center.
In this program you will hear about the real life challenges of being a woman in a man's world, what it means to be a working mother, what it's like to be an older woman in a youth-obsessed culture, the sometimes changing, often sweet truth about marriages, what being a feminist really means, and that you are in good company if your adult children don't return your phone calls.
So come, sit down, make yourself comfortable, and slip on those headphones. You're in for a treat.

Not what I was hoping for at all.
    Any additional comments?
I guess I was expecting something Nora Ephron adjacent and was excited by the stellar cast of celebrity narrators...Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Ellen Burstyn, Alan Alda, and a whole bunch more. Hmmmm. The essays in general were not funny, helpful, insightful, or even particularly well written. Revenge, pettiness, anger, bitterness, and such, appeared to be the main themes. For me it was all made worse by the addition of music and sound effects, which I don't really care for in an audiobook. Plus the narrators seem like they are acting the parts rather than narrating the stories, and by doing so they rather overpower the writing. Overall it felt more like listening to a not very good play being rehearsed than a book of essays.
