What do you do after you write a number-one best-selling book about your drunken, sexual misadventures that makes you rich and famous? Celebrate by getting more drunk and having insane amounts of sex, obviously. And pretty soon you've got another f-ing book on your hands. Stuffed full of ridiculous stories of bad decisions, debauchery, and sexual recklessness, Assholes Finish First starts where I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell left off, then proceeds to "some next-level shit." You already know how women react to confidence, game, and vodka, but what happens when you add money and fame to the mix? You get answers to the hard questions you've never thought of asking: What's it like to have sex with a midget? What about two midgets? How does it feel to get multiple requests to "fuck for charity"? What does it do to a man to watch a 19-year-old do wind sprints to sober up, so that she can have sex with you before her twin sister does? At what number of virgins does deflowering them stop being fun and start feeling like a job? When a girl you met three hours ago decides to tattoo your name next to her pussy, what is the appropriate reaction? Can you X-ray a blowjob? The answers are inside, they are absurd and hilarious, and they are the product of one man's experiences: His name is Tucker Max, and he is still an asshole.

    Tucker learned to read.
Upon re-reading "I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell," I have decided this is as funny, if not more so. That combined with the fact Tucker as infinitely improved his narrating skills makes this book a must read.
Tucker is an a-hole from start to finish
Would you try another book from Tucker Max and/or Tucker Max?
Maybe if there was more to the book than just having sex with multiple women and drinking stories.
Would you recommend Assholes Finish First to your friends? Why or why not?
If they were looking for a break from audiobooks that had some redeeming qualities and just want an escape to the ultimate hedonistic lifestyle. If you need some clever derogatory comments, this is your book.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes - Tucker does a good job of telling his story.
Was Assholes Finish First worth the listening time?
Yes, but if it were any longer, I would not have finished it. There are definitely some funny parts.
    Awesome book
This is a book that is spoken from the first person by an articulate individual that does what he wants and is driven by 2 things beer and women. Some of the stories are crude but hilarious. If you are a type of person that can not laugh at things that are not PC then don't read this book.
    Duped
I love the first book, but this one is not funny at all. The first book is awesome. However, like the title says for this book, he comes across as a complete a-hole.
I think these stories are the ones that were on the cutting floor for his first book.
    Started out Funny, but then...
Started out Funny and witty but quickly became boring and redundant. Vulgarity can be funny but this guy runs it into the ground and eventually sounds like some desperate high school kid trying to please his buddies. I almost feel sorry for this guy.

    Journey To Ixtlan
Fantastic Book full of wisdom with lots of humor, more of the carlos books need to be put on audiobook. The way of looking at ourselves and our death and the reality of how serious it should be, but how in reality we believe things about ourselves that are false images, this book makes me listen !
    More Please
If you could sum up Journey to Ixtlan in three words, what would they be?
    Great narration / direction
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
    not overly dramatic
What does Luis Moreno bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    pause and effect
    Any additional comments?
Would love to have ALL the Castaneda books on audible by this narrator
So well done! How about doing Tales of Power?
If you could sum up Journey to Ixtlan in three words, what would they be?
This classic Castaneda story, the first which doesn't feature psychedelic drugs, holds up well in time. I first read it 40 years ago. Immediately, after listening to Journey to Ixtlan, I tried to find the audiobook version of Tales Of Power, the book that follows this one, but it apparently does not exist in audio format. I would beg Luis Moreno to do this sequel, as the new generation of audiobook listeners shouldn't be tantalized with Journey To Ixtlan, salivating for more, only to find the series abruptly terminated.
What other book might you compare Journey to Ixtlan to and why?
Autobiography of a Yogi is the closest that comes to mind. Truly, there is little out there that compares to Castaneda's writing. He's in a class by himself.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The "hiding" of Carlos's car was a lot of fun.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I love the concept of a "Worthy Opponent," and Carlos's experiences with his.
    Any additional comments?
Put Tales of Power into Audiobook format!
    Fantastic Audio Book!
I couldn't ask for a better reading and performance of this book. Luis Moreno does an incredible job and I really wish they would hire him to do the rest of Carlos Castaneda's astounding books.
    Made me cry
If you could sum up Journey to Ixtlan in three words, what would they be?
    closure.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Don Genaro.
His teaching style is so different to that of Don Juan. He plays a much more important role in this book.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The perceptions of reality without the use of psychotropic plants. (the lost car in particular)
Close second is the details of the feud with Catalina.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. Don Genaro's story at the end made me cry. The insight he gives into the life of a 'Man of Knowledge' was something Don Juan never touched on.
    Any additional comments?
You must listen to the first 2 books before this one

    Publisher's Summary:
This New York Public Library selection, as one of the 150 most important books of the 20th century, is a true-life portrait of growing up in the Chicago projects.
This national best-seller chronicles the true story of two brothers coming of age in the Henry Horner public housing complex in Chicago. Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers are 11 and nine years old when the story begins in the summer of 1987. Living with their mother and six siblings, they struggle against grinding poverty, gun violence, gang influences, overzealous police officers, and overburdened and neglectful bureaucracies. Immersed in their lives for two years, Kotlowitz brings us this classic rendering of growing up poor in Americas cities.
    Critic Reviews:
A triumph of empathy as well as a significant feat of reporting. (Los Angeles Times)
Alex Kotlowitzs story informs the heart. His meticulous portrait of the two boys in a Chicago Housing project shows how much heroism is required to survive, let alone escape. (New York Times)

    Six stars
Don't know why I had not read this before. This book went on to become a nonfiction classic, often assigned in sociology classes. Written in the 1980s, it is -- sadly -- all still true. Not an easy reality. Told thru the eyes of children. Complicated. Unbiased. There is no better narrator than Dion Graham, who was especially able in bringing this story home.
Recommended for the same people who appreciate Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow. You might also like Gangleader for a Day.
An astounding and revealing real life story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I seldom come across a tale this affecting and powerful. Again I listened to this via Audible.com and I was not at any moment disappointed. Dion Graham is a seasoned and expressive narrator. The story is one that cuts straight to the heart of Chicago's innercity housing problems through the eyes of two young boys Lafayette and Pharoah. Kotlowitz somehow manages to strip away the distance one might feel in a typical journo-based human interest piece and replaces that with something incredibly experiential. I am certainly going to look for more of his writing after this.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Pharoah was my favourite character. I think that his undying sense of love over senseless violence and injustice at first comes across as naiive but really when you look at it, he asks some very obvious and potent questions. I know that his life has been hard upto now... mi only hope he has maintained that spirit as a young man.
What does Dion Graham bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Graham's voice is superb. I cannot fault his insights as a narrator. he cerhtainly brought the book to life for me and Icould not, could not stop listening to him!
If you could give There Are No Children Here a new subtitle, what would it be?
I dont think the subtitle needs changing
    Any additional comments?
    Read this book!!!!
    Tough but necessary read
I read this book based on its reviews and accolades. I'm glad that I did and would encourage everyone to do the same.....especially those like me who live in white suburbia. Move always heard about the projects but feel I have a much clearer, better understanding of the daily life and death battles that so many live with each day.

    Publisher's Summary:
A larger-than-life hero with a towering personality, Robin Olds was a graduate of West Point and an inductee in the National College Football Hall of Fame for his All-American performance for Army. In World War II, Olds quickly became a top fighter pilot and squadron commander by the age of 22a double ace with 12 aerial victories.
But it was in Vietnam where the man became a legend. He motivated a dejected group of pilots by placing himself under junior officers and challenging them to train him properly. He led the wing with aggressiveness, scoring another four confirmed kills and becoming a rare triple ace. With his marriage to Hollywood actress and pin-up girl Ella Raines, his nonregulation mustache and penchant for drink, Olds was a unique individual whose story is one of the most eagerly anticipated military books of the year.
Christina Olds, the daughter of Robin Olds, holds a B.A. in English and creative writing from Vassar, is a member of the Air Force Association, and is the first honorary lifetime member of the Red River Valley Association.
Ed Rasimus is a retired USAF fighter pilot who holds a B.S. in political science and an M.S. in both political science and international relations. He has previously written two books on the Vietnam air war, When Thunder Rolled and Palace Cobra.

    Top Notch Audiobook
Robertson Dean's performance as Robin Olds is fantastic. This being my 14th audiobook (mostly WW2 history) was by far my favorite. The story really comes to life with the lively 1st person perspective and detailed accounts. I felt like I really understood what was happening in the times and places that the book took me to. Fighter Pilot gave me a perspective on life in the military during WW2 through Vietnam. The story of Robin Olds was absolutely amazing, this is a true American hero that just made me proud from start to finish. Oh, and the really, really best thing about the book was the human perspective. All through the tale I heard his insights, emotions, hopes and dreams. Superb!!!
    Great Audiobook!
I couldn't stop listening to this biography about Robin Olds. The book is a treasure trove of history about WWII and Viet Nam. If you are a student of history, this book will be a goldmine of information about the war years.
    American Hero
    Any additional comments?
If you love stories of American patriots this will inspire you. Robin Olds was a truly amazing, fearless, patriotic American. The book was well read. My only drawback was the language. I understand from the Introduction that Olds wanted the story in his language, and he got it. Unfortunately, much of the vulgarity just was not need to tell the story.
    Proud to be an American
This book read like a novel. Very glad this story got told! I liked Robin's exit statagy for Vietnam. I wish all politicians were required to know this much about the military they deploy!
    Gripping story, superb narration
Robertson Dean does a superlative job with the narration. Fascinating story. My hat is off to Christina Olds and Ed Rasimus for writing in the first person. The technique brings Olds to life. He must have been a helluva guy. This is a five-star book all the way.

Great Book not right for everyone
Excellent narration is the cap to the fascinating and enjoyable novel. As much as I enjoyed this novel, I can see that many people would really not appreciate it. This is largely an inner stream of consciousness and there are a lot of four letter words and frank thoughts about sex and death. In the first chapter involving a death from cancer I was literally laughing and crying and nauseated and uplifted at the same time. I dont mean alternately, I mean at the very same instant. This is pretty unusual writing. I was thinking Gen-X meets James Joyce. The characters, even some very minor characters, are quite well presented. If you want a story where the protagonist faces adversity only to take heart and overcome, you might not want this book (but maybe you should read it anyway). The characters do change, but not in pat ways, instead in the ways people really change. The protagonist is often not very likeable, yet he is human and the beauty of his existence sporadically flashes through. I am nearly as far as it gets from being a Gen-Xer but I really liked this book. The narration more than does justice to the text, shouting and crying, mumbling and enunciating when the writing called for it.
Parts I loved, Parts I hated but Playfully Kinetic
There are parts of this book I absolutely loved. There are also parts of it I definitely hated. I think Eggers' talent is obvious, his playfulness kinetic, his abilility to make his own grief/history both gruesome and beautiful by basically eating every experience and person surrounding him (disposal of his mom's ashes is a good example). Eventually his thinking about the thinking and thinking about the thinking about thinking kinda drove me a little nuts.
I do want to distinguish my own discomfort with this early Dave Eggers book from the current jealous-hipster backlash against Eggers. Yes, my hipster MFA people, Eggesr isn't Henry James, certainly, but still he manages to subvert the artificial separation between fiction and memoirs in aHWofSG. So, just admit that part of your animosity towards this book is that you didn't think of it, write it, or end up actually being able to make a living/achieve fame from a book you wrote in your twenties (same feelings that bubbles up whenever a Foer brother publishes something)
I'm also glad I waited to read/listen to this until Eggers had proven through McSweeney's, and his more recent books of nonfiction and fiction, that he wasnt just a gimmicky one-hit-wonder.
Oh, and Dion Graham's read of aHWofSG was kindof amazing.
It was hard to move onto another book after this!
I loved this book. I could relate to his inner monologue and found myself laughing many times throughout the book.

    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 358 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
William Kamkwamba was born in Malawi, a country where magic ruled and modern science was mystery. It was also a land withered by drought and hunger, and a place where hope and opportunity were hard to find.
Enchanted by the workings of electricity as a boy, William had a goal to study science in Malawi's top boarding schools. But in 2002, his country was stricken with a famine that left his family's farm devastated and his parents destitute. Unable to pay the 80-dollar-a-year tuition for his education, William was forced to drop out and help his family forage for food as thousands across the country starved and died.
Yet William refused to let go of his dreams. With nothing more than a fistful of cornmeal in his stomach, a small pile of once-forgotten science textbooks, and an armory of curiosity and determination, he embarked on a daring plan to bring his family a set of luxuries that only two percent of Malawians could afford and what the West considers a necessity--electricity and running water. Using scrap metal, tractor parts, and bicycle halves, William forged a crude yet operable windmill, an unlikely contraption and small miracle that eventually powered four lights, complete with homemade switches and a circuit breaker made from nails and wire. A second machine turned a water pump that could battle the drought and famine that loomed with every season.
Soon, news of William's magetsi a mphepo--his "electric wind"--spread beyond the borders of his home, and the boy who was once called crazy became an inspiration to those around the world.
Here is the remarkable story about human inventiveness and its power to overcome crippling adversity. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind will inspire anyone who doubts the power of one individual's ability to change his community and better the lives of those around him.
    Critic Reviews:
"William Kamkwamba's achievements with wind energy should serve as a model of what one person, with an inspired idea, can do to tackle the crisis we face. His book tells a moving and exciting story." (Al Gore, former Vice President and Nobel Laureate)
"This exquisite tale strips life down to its barest essentials, and once there finds reason for hopes and dreams, and is especially resonant for Americans given the economy and increasingly heated debates over health care and energy policy." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Just Wonderful
Inspirational story of a boy who grows up with next to nothing in Africa and loses even that in a famine. Incredibly, secondary education is not accessible for this bright, curious boy and this is the cruelest blow of all. William triumphs over these obstacles by building a windmill largely from junkyard parts. I wish nothing but the best for William. The narration was unique but fit the story well. The toughest thing about listening to this book is coming back to reality and our materialistic, self centered lives.
A story of INGENUITY, richly narrated
Narrator Chike Johnson's warm and accurately-accented reading of William Kamkwamba's story makes me glad that I listened to it on audio rather than just reading it off a page. The beautiful East African accent is easy to understand and helps draw the listener into the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
At 28,251 feet, the world's second-tallest mountain, K2 thrusts skyward out of the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan. Climbers regard it as the ultimate achievement in mountaineering, with good reason. Four times as deadly as Everest, K2 has claimed the lives of 77 climbers since 1954.
In August 2008, 11 climbers died in a single 36-hour period on K2 - the worst single-event tragedy in the mountain's history and the second-worst in the long chronicle of mountaineering in the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges. Yet summiting K2 remains a cherished goal for climbers from all over the globe.
Before he faced the challenge of K2 himself, Ed Viesturs, one of the world's premier high-altitude mountaineers, thought of it as "the holy grail of mountaineering". In K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain, Viesturs explores the remarkable history of the mountain and of those who have attempted to conquer it. At the same time he probes K2's most memorable sagas in an attempt to illustrate the lessons learned by confronting the fundamental questions raised by mountaineering - questions of risk, ambition, loyalty to one's teammates, self-sacrifice, and the price of glory.
Viesturs knows the mountain firsthand. He and renowned alpinist Scott Fischer climbed it in 1992 and were nearly killed in an avalanche that sent them sliding to almost certain death. Fortunately, Ed managed to get into a self-arrest position with his ice ax and stop both his fall and Scott's.
Focusing on seven of the mountain's most dramatic campaigns, from his own troubled ascent to the 2008 tragedy, Viesturs crafts an edge-of-your-seat narrative that climbers and armchair travelers alike will find unforgettably compelling. With photographs from Viesturs's personal colle...

My first foray into mountaineering history
Would you listen to K2 again? Why?
Maybe. It was a fascinating story, especially since I didn't know much about mountaineering beforehand and was way more familiar with Mt. Everest. There were a lot of wisdom gems about living life.
What did you like best about this story?
I like learning about the history of nearly anything, but I had never read about the history of mountaineering before. Seeing "Everest" in 2015 piqued my interest in other 8000ers, and after researching a bit, I figured this book would be a good entrance into the subject, and I was right. I liked how Viesturs writing made everything understandable and relatable. Given how lazy I tend to be, I didn't expect to see myself in any of the climbers he mentioned, but surprisingly, I did; I found I could empathize quite a bit.
Which character as performed by Fred Sanders was your favorite?
    None
Almost Makes You Want to Climb K2... Almost
Would you consider the audio edition of K2 to be better than the print version?
I've never ready to print version so I can't be sure. Either way, the audio version is excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of K2?
It's hard to identify a single moment. Hearing about all the difficult circumstances while climbing the mountain is what makes the book so riveting. You learn the history of K2 and get firsthand perspective on how difficult and scary it is to actually climb it.

    Publisher's Summary:
Like the men whose epic stories Jon Krakauer has told in his previous best sellers, Pat Tillman was an irrepressible individualist and iconoclast. In May 2002, Tillman walked away from his $3.6 million NFL contract to enlist in the United States Army. He was deeply troubled by 9/11, and he felt a strong moral obligation to join the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Two years later, he died on a desolate hillside in southeastern Afghanistan.
Though obvious to most of the two dozen soldiers on the scene that a ranger in Tillman's own platoon had fired the fatal shots, the Army aggressively maneuvered to keep this information from Tillman's wife, other family members, and the American public for five weeks following his death. During this time, President Bush repeatedly invoked Tillman's name to promote his administration's foreign policy. Long after Tillman's nationally televised memorial service, the Army grudgingly notified his closest relatives that he had probably been killed by friendly fire while it continued to dissemble about the details of his death and who was responsible.
In Where Men Win Glory, Jon Krakauer draws on Tillman's journals and letters, interviews with his wife and friends, conversations with the soldiers who served alongside him, and extensive research on the ground in Afghanistan to render an intricate mosaic of this driven, complex, and uncommonly compelling figure, as well as the definitive account of the events and actions that led to his death.
Before he enlisted in the army, Tillman was familiar to sports aficionados as an undersized, overachieving Arizona Cardinals safety whose virtuosity in the defensive backfield was spellbinding. With his shoulder-length hair, outspoken views, and boundless intellectual curiosity, Tillm...

Wonderful book, will have to read it in book form
I want my money back. Scott Brick's narration is so melodramatic, his voice just SOBS, saying mundane things like, "he was just under six feet tall," sob. What a weight of schmalz in that voice. It's like every sentence is a recitation of a prayer. It's like the devastating announcements that occur in soap operas. Jeez. Give me a break! P.S. Jon Krakauer is always great. I'll have to buy the book, now.
    Good book, painful narration
Enjoying the content of the book, but it sounds like it's being read by Agent Smith from the Matrix. Slow, over-enunciation, and dramatic emphasis on words and phrases that needn't be dramatically emphasized.
    Great Read
Thoroughly enjoyable book. Very well researched and written, and a heart wrenching story as well. Pat Tillman had a humility most of us should aspire to and was a man of great principles. His story alone is no more important than any other soldier killed in action, however the attempts by Government and Army officials to use it to their advantage (against his will) are appalling.
Scott Brick's narration is excellent (no idea how one reviewer thought he was condescending). Highly recommended audiobook.
    Not his best.
Krakauer is one of my favoite authors, but this is not his best work.

    Publisher's Summary:
It was a split-second operation as delicate and as deadly as a time bomb. It demanded the concentrated devotion and vigilance of more than six hundred men for every hour, every day, and every night for more than a year. With only their bare hands and crude homemade tools, they sank shafts, built underground railroads, forged passports, drew maps, faked weapons, and tailored German clothes. They developed a fantastic security system to protect themselves from the Germans who tenaciously prowled the compounds. And against all odds, they pulled off a daring mass escape from a German POW camp.

    Fascinating and exciting!!
    Any additional comments?
Absolutely terrific read that fired my imagination and sent me running to YouTube to find interviews with the POWs that were there. Amazing to know that the technical aspects of the dig as portrayed in the film were 100% true. The book provides even more jaw dropping details and wily tricks not covered in the film. Wonderful!! Get it! You won't be sorry!
    My new favourite book.
What made the experience of listening to The Great Escape the most enjoyable?
An excellent book to listen to while working.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Roger was such an interesting character. He is now who I think of as an example of a leader among men.
Which character as performed by Robert Whitfield was your favorite?
There were so many, but to each he brought expression and depth of character.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Once they have decided on a course of action, a group of men can do anything.
One of the most incredible stories of all time
If no one had ever listened to an audiobook before, this would be the first one I would recommend.
The story is equal parts funny, suspenseful, tragic, and heroic. There is not one dull moment.
Robert Whitfield plays the wearied storyteller to perfection. You can hear in his performance the voice of a man who lived through this ordeal, but never lost his hope or his trust in his fellow countrymen and allies.
The incredible and famous movie adaptation has buried its all-star cast in the western world's psyche. Everyone has images of Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, and all the rest in their heads. This gives the amateur audiobook listener a shortcut to visualizing the major characters.
    Finally, it's all true.
The film used this book as its basis
You can see so many of the incidents in the book dramatized on the big screen, but this is the real story. The film missed this filthy nature of these men who had insufficient food for much of the time they were POWs. Brickhill has done 3 classics of the WWII genre. This, the Dam Busters, and Reach for the Sky. He was in the RAF and at Stalag Luft III. I don't completely trust the book as history because of his personal involvement. However, it's still a gripping story. It goes by so quickly. Very enjoyable and one of the better stories in the escape genre.
